NYPD sets the record straight after Central Park 5 member told racially charged tall tale about traffic stop

New York City Councilman Yusef Salaam, a member of the Central Park Five, was pulled over in Harlem by police Friday evening, just days ahead of a council vote on legislation that would bury police in paperwork over low-level stops.

Salaam complained about the traffic stop, suggesting he had been pulled over without a reason and that racial bias was a factor. Bodycam footage of the interaction told an entirely different story.

For besmirching the police force and using a revisionist account of the traffic stop for political purposes, Salaam's peers are now calling for his resignation.

The stop, according to Salaam

The Democrat, who assumed office on Jan. 1, claimed in a statement — which was well trafficked by the liberal media — that upon being pulled over, he introduced himself as "Councilman Yusef Salaam, and subsequently asked the officer why [he] was pulled over."

"Instead of answering my question, the officer stated 'We're done here,' and proceeded to walk away," continued Salaam. "The fact that the officer did not provide a rationale for the stop, which would have only been legal at 'level 3' (with reasonable suspicion) or higher as required for vehicle stops, calls into question how the NYPD justifies its stops of New Yorkers and highlights the need for greater transparency to ensure they are constitutional."

"This experience only amplified the importance of transparency for all police investigative stops, because the lack of transparency allows racial profiling and unconstitutional stops of all types to occur and often go underreported," added Salaam.

The city council is set to vote Tuesday to override Mayor Eric Adams veto on leftists' "How Many Stops Act."

The bill, supported and promoted by Salaam, would require police to provide quarterly reports detailing information on "level one, two, and three investigative encounters between the police and civilians, including the race/ethnicity, age and gender of the civilian approached by the police, the factors that led to the interaction, and whether the interaction led to a summons or use of force incident."

While police officers don't have to provide a reason for a stop, Salaam stressed the officer should have done so anyway, reported the New York Times.

"We know that the danger is there every single time a black man in particular gets behind the wheel of a car," said the councilman.

The stop as it really happened

In the bodycam footage of the incident, an officer approaches a blue BMW with heavily tinted windows — so tinted as to preclude an officer from seeing the race of whoever was driving — then politely asks Salaam, "Will you roll your back window, please?"

After peering into the rear of the vehicle to confirm there were no threats lurking behind the opaque glass, the officer approaches the driver's side window and identifies himself.

Salaam interrupts, noting he is "Councilmember Salaam. This district, District 9."

"Okay. Have a good one," responds the officer. "You're working, right? ... Take care, sir."

— (@)

The NYPD confirmed in a statement that an officer operating in the 26th precinct pulled over a blue sedan with a Georgia license plate for driving with dark tint beyond legal limits, a violation of New York State law.

"As the video shows, throughout this interaction, the officer conducted himself professionally and respectfully," said the NYPD. "He followed all proper procedures, including procedures that were put in place after Detective Russel Timoshenko was shot and killed through tinted windows in 2007."

Police also made clear that contrary to Salaam's understanding, "Last night's exchange was not a Level 1 interaction, as any vehicle stop is, by definition, a Level 4 encounter since the officer had probable cause of a violation of the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law."

Mayor Adams later lauded the officer for doing an exemplary job.

"We saw, really, a picture-perfect example how civilian and police officers responded. Professional, courteous, communicative," said Adams. "I think we need to be proud."

Backlash

NYC Councilman Robert Holden (D) called on Salaam to resign as public safety chair, writing on X, "This is damning: an elected official with illegal tints and out-of-state plates, not legally registered, using his official title to evade the law. Worse yet, he lied about the exchange until NYPD set the record straight."

"The stop was not illegal," Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R) stated. "The stop was done by the book. What is illegal is the percentage of tinting on his windows, using your Council Member title to get out of a ticket and lying about the interaction."

"How can we expect him to be impartial as chair of the Public Safety Committee when he did not depict an accurate accounting of the event?" added Ariola.

Republican NYC Councilman Joe Borelli shared the bodycam footage, noting, "As you can see. Police stops are already recorded... What is sad is taking an incident where someone cuts you a break, does right by you, and then misrepresenting the truth to get them in trouble."

Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (R) similarly took issue with Salaam's political weaponization of the apparent lie, writing, "What this experience amplifies is how [Salaam] lied, [is] potentially committing insurance fraud, using the race card, as well as using [his] status as Councilmember to evade the law."

"The officer did everything by the book, and was nothing but extra nice to you," continued Vernikov. "What he could have done is ticket you for tinted windows and driving over speed limit. The officer and @NYPDnews are entitled to a public apology from you."

The Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York also called for Salaam to apologize.

PBA president Patrick Hendry said in a statement, "Facts matter, and the video doesn't just expose the lies about this incident. It shows the truth about the outstanding, professional work our members do every day. This Council member and every other elected official who baselessly smeared our police officers owe them an apology."

NewsNation indicated that Salaam has denied using his title to evade a ticket. The councilman also claimed in an interview that, despite moving back to New York in December 2022, he is still in the process of transferring the registration of his vehicle from Georgia to New York.

As for New York's prohibition on overly tinted windows, Salaam reportedly expressed ignorance, noting he would have addressed the issue had he known it was a problem.

Statement claims Harry and Meghan were involved in a 'near catastrophic car chase'

A spokesperson claimed in a statement that the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were targeted by the paparazzi in a "near catastrophic car chase."

The statement reportedly said that the the couple, and Meghan's mother Doria Ragland, "were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi." The statement claimed the "relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers."

New York City Mayor Eric Adams seemed to indicate that according to a briefing he received, two police officers could have been hurt. But a police statement says, "The NYPD assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard."

Reports seem to indicate that the trip involved leaving an event, eventually stopping at a police precinct, hopping in a taxi, eventually circling back to the precinct, and eventually leaving again.

According to the New York Times, Harry, Meghan, and her mother departed from the Women of Vision awards event where Meghan had been an honoree.

The Times reported that according to a law enforcement official who has knowledge about the issue, the group departed in a private security vehicle with a law enforcement escort but were unable to lose the paparazzi. They were then escorted to the 19th police precinct, the official reportedly claimed.

Taxi driver Sukhcharn Singh says he picked up Harry, Meghan, another woman, and a security guard outside the precinct, according to the Washington Post. Singh indicated that they were followed by two vehicles. "They kept following us and were coming next to the car," he said, according to the outlet. "They took pictures as we stopped and were filming us."

He took the passengers back to the precinct, he noted, according to the Times.

"I don't think I would call it a chase," he said of the experience, according to the Post. "I never felt like I was in danger. It wasn't like a car chase in a movie. They were quiet and seemed scared but it’s New York — it's safe." He estimated that the trip in the taxi was around 10 minutes long.

The group eventually departed the precinct with a police escort and no paparazzi on their tail, the Times reported, citing the official.

'I was very drunk': Video shows NYC man try to set restaurant on fire for getting chicken biryani order wrong, but ends up lighting himself ablaze

Viral video shows the moment a furious customer attempted to burn a restaurant to the ground for getting his order wrong. However, the New York City man ended up lighting himself on fire.

The official Twitter account for the FDNY posted video of a man attempting to light a Bangladeshi restaurant on fire on Oct. 2. The surveillance camera footage catches the man pouring a flammable liquid on the Ittadi Garden & Grill in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York.

Video shows him crouching down to ignite the fire when the revenge plot spectacularly backfires.

The man's body gets caught in the huge fireball. He is seen running away from his own fire that he ignited.

On Oct. 14, NYPD arrested Choephel Norbu for the alleged arson following an investigation that lasted nearly two weeks. The 49-year-old man was charged with one count of arson in the third degree and one count of criminal mischief in the second degree, according to the Queens District Attorney's office.

Norbu ordered a chicken biryani from the Bangladeshi restaurant, according to court documents. However, he reportedly got the wrong order and became extremely angry. He is said to have thrown away the chicken biryani in disgust.

Norbu is accused of marching back to the Ittadi Garden & Grill and torching the restaurant.

"I was very drunk. I bought chicken biryani. They didn’t give me chicken biryani. I was mad, and I threw it out,” Norbu told police, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the New York Post. “I bought a gas can, and I threw it at the store to try to burn it out. I lit it up, and boom, it got on me.”

The blaze caused over $1,500 in damages to the restaurant, including shattered glass at the front and damage to the air conditioning unit, according to the District Attorney's office.

Norbu – who does not have a criminal record – was released without bail after arraignment.

He is due back in court on Dec. 7, Meris Campbell, said a spokesperson for the Queens District Attorney's office.

Creep steals hundreds of dollars from 64-year-old man in wheelchair — as other bus passengers simply watch it happen

A crook was caught on surveillance video stealing hundreds of dollars in cash from a victim sitting in a wheelchair aboard a New York City bus earlier this month, police told the New York Post.

Video shows at least four other passengers seated aboard the bus at the time of the robbery, and none of them did a thing in response.

What are the details?

New York City police released video Sunday showing the crook standing directly behind the victim — a 64-year-old man — around 9 p.m. Aug. 13 on a Staten Island bus, police told the Post.

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYPDnews

Soon the crook reaches down toward the victim — who's sitting in a wheelchair — and goes into the victim's shirt pocket as the S40 MTA bus stops at Clinton Avenue and Richmond Terrace, police told the paper.

As the suspect pulls out his hand, much of the cash falls to the bus floor as the suspect and victim struggle for it. But the suspect manages to hold on to some of the cash and appears to grab additional bills from the floor before fleeing the bus.

The Post said the suspect got away with $250.

The paper said the victim rose from his wheelchair briefly as if to fight back but then sat back down. The victim wasn't injured, the Post said, adding that the crook took off in an unknown direction.

The suspect is described as a man in his 20s, standing at 5’7″ and weighing 160 pounds, police told the Post. He was last seen wearing a black “TLC” shirt, black Nike basketball shorts, white socks, and black sandals, the paper added.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782), the Post reported. The public also can submit tips at the Crime Stoppers website at https://crimestoppers.nypdonline.org and on Twitter @NYPDTips, the paper added.

'I hope he's watching': Widow of slain NYPD officer slams Manhattan DA in emotional eulogy, says, 'We are not safe any more'

The grieving widow of a slain New York City Police Department officer called out Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg over his soft-on-crime approach during her husband's eulogy Thursday.

What happened?

Speaking in front of a packed crowd at St. Patrick's Cathedral gathered for Jason Rivera's funeral service, Dominique Luzuriaga memorialized her hero husband before rebuking the city prosecutor for failing to protect him and others who wear the uniform.

"The system continues to fail us. We are not safe any more, not even the members of the service," she said, according to the New York Daily News. "I know you were tired of these new laws, especially the ones from the new DA. I hope he’s watching you speak through me right now."

The cathedral, whichad remained quiet out of respect for the fallen officer, erupted in loud applause in response to her strong words.

“I’m sure all of our blue family is tired too,” she added. “But I promise, we promise, that your death won’t be in vain.”

What's the background?

Rivera, 22, and his partner Officer Wilbert Mora, 27, were ambushed while responding to a domestic violence incident in Harlem last Friday.

They had received a call from 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil's mother, who told officers she was in a dispute with her son. Then, when they entered the house, McNeil opened fire on the two officers.

Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene. Mora was rushed to the hospital, where he died three days later.

Tonight, we mourn the loss of a hero officer \u2014 a son, husband, and friend. Only 22 years old, Police Officer Jason Rivera was murdered in the line of duty. Mora and Rivera “were dedicated, courageous and compassionate officers, loved by many. The pain their families feel is immeasurable. We pray for them; we will be strong for them,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said in a statement.

At his funeral service, Rivera was posthumously promoted to detective first grade.

What else?

The officers' tragic deaths have renewed calls for Bragg's ouster. The district attorney was already under fire for his controversial “day one” memo, which directed his office to take a more lenient approach on prosecutions by dropping certain misdemeanor cases and not seeking pretrial detention except for in the most violent of cases.

On Wednesday, Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul put Bragg on notice, warning him she's prepared to use her authority to force him to change his policies or remove him from office.

"I have options, but I will be monitoring the situation very closely," Hochul told the New York Post.

Bragg has since changed his tune on the law enforcement and criminal justice reforms.

In a statement following Rivera's funeral, Bragg said he is "grieving and praying for Detective Rivera and Officer Mora today and every day, and my thoughts are with their families and the NYPD."

“Violence against police officers will never be tolerated,” he added. “My office will vigorously prosecute cases of violence against police and work to prevent senseless acts like this from ever happening again.”

New York governor gets fact-checked after blaming 'a shot from an illegal gun' for murder of NYPD officer

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) was mocked on social media over the weekend after she blamed "a shot from an illegal gun" for killing a New York City police officer on Friday.

What is the background?

Rookie NYPD officer Jason Rivera was murdered and his partner Wilbert Mora critically injured when Lashawn McNeil reportedly opened fire on them in an ambush-style attack. The officers were dispatched to the apartment where McNeil was staying after his mother called 911 and reported a domestic incident.

At the scene, investigators reportedly recovered a Glock .45 pistol that was allegedly reported stolen out of Baltimore, the New York Post reported. McNeil reportedly had a lengthy rap sheet for prior criminal activity and was out on probation at the time of the shooting.

What did Hochul say?

On Saturday, the governor claimed that "a shot from an illegal gun" — not McNeil — took Rivera's life.

"Last night, a shot from an illegal gun took the life of a @NYPDnews officer," Hochul tweeted. "When I say we’re going to do everything we can to stop the scourge of illegal guns in our state, it’s not just talk. We are tripling funding for efforts to get these guns off the streets."

— Kathy Hochul (@Kathy Hochul) 1642879066

In a video accompanying her tweet, Hochul declared that Rivera's death is a "resounding call to action" on guns, adding that "we have to do more to fight the scourge of illegal guns on our streets." She blamed lenient firearm laws in neighboring states for the alleged incursion of illegal guns into the Empire State.

What was the reaction?

Critics pounced on Hochul and her rush to blame guns for the murder of a police officer that happened allegedly at the hands of a person who should not have had a gun in the first place.

  • "Clueless Kathy: A career criminal you & others like to coddle shot the NYPD cops. You talk tough on guns but NYC prosecutors drop charges on majority of gun crimes. You resist tougher gun crime penalties. Your 'bail reform' is a disaster. Your LG is 'defund the police' Wake up!" Rob Astorino, who is running for governor of New York as a Republican, said.
  • "Guns don’t kill people…. People kill people. And the person is the problem. If it’s not a gun, then it’s some other type of weapon. The problem here is the person. Need to deal with very mean and evil people with weapons," another person said.
  • "We are done with this ideology. The illegal guns will continue to be issues as long as there are bad people who are comfortable with the risk proposition to carry them and use them. NYC has the strictest gun laws in the country. They have some of the most lax bail laws," one person pointed out.
  • "How’d the gun go off? Did it just discharge?" one person mockingly questioned.
  • "Any word on the gun's motive," another person mocked.
  • "The murderer once again had a long arrest record & was repeatedly released from jail. We desperately need to revisit bail reform. It’s impossible to live in NY," one person said.
  • "Im sorry but talking about ending illegal guns right now is bull sh**. It’s not something you can do overnight Do something that will address the criminals. End the ridiculous bail reform that has only made things worse. Sometimes you have to admit when things done work!!!" another person said.
  • "Guns just walking around shooting people on their own? Is this gun related to the SUV that ran over a parade in Waukesha?" one person mocked.
  • "A shot from an illegal gun' fired by a human with an extensive criminal record, right?" another person mocked.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) also seemingly placed partial blame for the murder of Rivera on guns, and he is demanding intervention from federal officials to help curb the influx of guns into the Big Apple.

Video: Motorist in SUV drags, runs over NYPD officer after fleeing traffic stop

A New York City police officer suffered a broken ankle after a motorist dragged her down a Bronx street and ran over her leg after she slipped beneath the fleeing SUV.

What are the details?

Video released Tuesday by the NYPD shows the officer standing at the open driver’s side door of a black 2017 Range Rover around 6 p.m. Dec. 12 on East 194th Street at Briggs Avenue, the New York Post reported.

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYPDnews

Suddenly the motorist hits the gas and drags the officer, who is seen slipping beneath the SUV:

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYPDnews

Then the motorist runs over the officer. The vehicle hops as if it had run over a speed bump, and the officer is left in a heap behind the SUV and crying out in pain:

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYPDnews

The officer manages to get to her feet and limp to the sidewalk — and then, incredibly, she walks back to the vehicle and appears to open the driver's side door to confront the fleeing motorist.

— NYPD NEWS (@NYPD NEWS) 1640102794

What else do we know?

Officers noticed that the vehicle — driven by 24-year-old Usman Haruna — had expired temporary New Jersey plates, the Post said, citing police and law enforcement sources.

But Haruna refused to stop for cops and drove recklessly through red lights “at an unsafe speed” and swerved in and out of traffic, police added to the paper.

Soon Haruna was driving on a sidewalk and then backed up “recklessly toward the officers,” cops added to the Post.

Two officers then approached the SUV — a male officer on the passenger's side and a female officer who opened the driver’s side door and partially entered the vehicle, police told the paper.

Haruna ran over the female officer's right leg up to her hip, police sources noted to the Post. The male officer suffered bruises on both knees, the paper said.

Haruna was charged with assault, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operator, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration, police noted to the paper, along with a violation for allegedly operating an unregistered vehicle.

What happened to the officers?

The female officer went to St. Barnabas Hospital, and the male officer went to Jacobi Medical Center, police and law enforcement sources told the Post.

The NYPD tweet about the incident said the female officer "is recovering" and added a "clear" message to criminals: "You will be apprehended!”

Thug punches 77-year-old woman in face in broad daylight — then rips away her purse and her Bible

New York City police are looking for a man they said punched a 77-year-old woman in the face, after which he ripped away the woman's purse — along with her Bible.

What are the details?

Police said the man is wanted for robbery after approaching the elderly woman in Queens around noon Sunday, punching her in the face, and then yanking away her purse and Bible.

Police provided video of the incident that shows the assailant fighting the woman for her belongings and violently pulling on the woman's purse until she no longer can hold on.

Here is a closer look at the suspect. Again, if you have any info, DM @NYPDTips, or anonymously call them at 800-57… https://t.co/nhD5wc1aYj

— NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) 1631624199.0

What happened to the victim and her attacker?

The woman suffered cuts to her hands and was evaluated on scene by EMS, but police told the New York Post she refused additional medical attention.

The suspect ran off after he took the victim's belongings, police told the paper, adding that he was still on the loose as of late Monday.

Anything else?

The Post said the clip came from surveillance video, but a number of observers questioned that conclusion — and wondered why no one helped the victim, among other things:

  • "Why didn't anyone intervene?" one commenter asked. "Was it more important to record the event to get your 15 seconds of fame or to stop the perp to get him 15 years in lockup? SMH!"
  • "So glad you have pieces of s**t filming this and not trying to help her," another user said. "What a great city and great citizens you have there. Disgusting!"
  • "I'm sure this piece of fecal matter stole the purse just to get a Bible...if only he could read so he could get something to guide him in a different direction," another commenter wrote.
  • "I hope you catch this one," another user said. "What a bum, and the person recording is a piece of s**t."
  • "Good thing everyone stood around and watched; wouldn't want to actually do anything or help outside of pulling your phone out..." another commenter said. "This is what happens when you encourage crime and let criminals run a city. I always assumed 'Escape from NY' was a movie, not a prediction."

VIDEO: Hero NYPD officer jumps into action after sick man passes out and falls on subway tracks — and only seconds to spare with train approaching

As police across the country deal with violence and protests against them — not to mention calls to defund them — it's refreshing to witness moments when officers put themselves in harm's way without hesitation to save lives and how appreciated they are by the public for their bravery.

Take, for example, a video released Thursday by the New York City Police Department showing a terrifying sight: A sick man passed out while waiting for a subway train in the Bronx — and he fell on the tracks:

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYPD News

What happened next?

Bystanders on the passenger platform raised their voices at the sight, knowing a train would rumble over the spot where the motionless man was laying.

Fortunately a still-funded NYPD transit cop was on the scene:

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYPD News

And he quickly jumped down on the tracks in an attempt to rescue the sick man:

The officer had to work fast — but it appeared to be a struggle to get the man on his feet:

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @NYPD News

Soon one of the bystanders took a risk of his own and jumped down to join the officer in an attempt to get the man off the tracks:

Finally — with the officer on one side of the man and the bystander on the other — they walked him to the platform:

Waiting passengers helped pull all three of them to safety, hollering for them to hurry up, as a voice on a speaker warned folks to move back in preparation for an oncoming train:

Sure enough, a train's light came into view seconds after the trio was pulled to safety:

And as an added bonus, cheers broke out.

That's how it's done. No one cared about skin color, pronoun preferences, who you "liked" on Twitter, or who you voted for in the 2020 presidential election. People simply pulled together and knew it was something pretty great.

VIDEO: 10 wounded, including 72-year-old, in 'brazen' NYC shooting where gangbangers escape on mopeds in 'coordinated attack'

Disturbing video shows the eye-opening moment that two men casually strolled down a sidewalk in the New York City borough of Queens and then unleashed a hailstorm of bullets. The mass shooting ended with at least 10 people wounded and the shooters escaped on mopeds.

NYPD officials released surveillance video of two masked and hooded gunmen firing their weapons on a group of people that were standing in front of a barbershop and laundromat in the Queen's neighborhood of Corona. The shooting, which occurred just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, wounded eight men and two women between the ages of 19 and 72. All were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said that seven of the victims were innocent bystanders, and three others were known members of the Trinitario, a Dominican street gang — believed to be the intended targets, according to Fox News. Police said 40 shell casings were recovered from the scene near 99th Street and 37th Avenue, and that investigators were discovering new casings more than seven hours after the shooting occurred.

The gangbangers had getaway drivers that picked them up on mopeds to escape the crime scene.

"This was a brazen, coordinated attack, for lack of a better word," Essig said during a news conference. "This is unacceptable, and it has to stop."

"There's just one common theme, I want to get out there, that's a recurring theme that keeps happening, and it has to stop throughout the city," Essig continued. "That's gang members; that's guns, multiple guns on the scene, scooters being used, masks; and lastly, unintended targets getting hit. This is unacceptable on our streets in New York City, and it has to stop."

"Trust me when I tell you, if you allow gangs to get footholds in this city, we have a real problem," New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Eric Adams said. "This is a crisis."

There were no suspects in custody as of Sunday morning, according to police.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting or the suspects to contact @NYPDTips, or call them at 800-577-TIPS.

There were 18 people killed or wounded in seven separate shootings in New York City on Saturday, the New York Daily News reported.

Also this weekend, there was a mass shooting in New Orleans, which sent revelers on Bourbon Street fleeing for their lives. Shortly before 3 a.m., there was a shooting in the French Quarter that left five people injured.
