'Punk didn’t even have a clip in the gun': Man turns the tables on attackers, grabbing gun away and pistol-whipping them

An Ohio armed robbery victim turned the tables on his attackers last month, grabbing a gun away and then pistol-whipping them before police arrived, Cleveland.com reported.

Accused gunman Velonte Barnes, 25, of Cleveland Heights approached a 29-year-old shopper a BP convenience store on Monticello Boulevard in South Euclid on the afternoon of July 6, police told the outlet.

Police said the trio began wrestling on the floor, and the victim grabbed the gun from Barnes and used it to pistol-whip both attackers, the outlet noted.

At the beverage cooler, Barnes stuck a gun on the man’s stomach, grabbed the victim’s keys from his pocket, and headed toward the store entrance, Cleveland.com said, citing a police report.

But police said the victim followed Barnes and tried to rip the gun from his hands, the outlet reported, which resulted in a brawl caught on camera.

Police said a second suspect — 35-year-old Leroy Buchanan — entered the store, shoved the victim against a fountain drink dispenser while Barnes knocked the victim into a coffee machine, after which a pot of hot coffee spilled on the victim, Cleveland.com reported.

Police said the trio began wrestling on the floor, and the victim grabbed the gun from Barnes and used it to pistol-whip both attackers, the outlet noted.

Buchanan got back on his feet, chased the victim into a corner, and began punching him, Cleveland.com said, citing authorities.

With that, a third suspect — 33-year-old Sean Buchanan, Leroy's younger brother — entered the store, shoved the victim against the drink dispenser, and punched the victim's head and body, the outlet said, citing police.

In addition, Barnes picked up a glass coffee pot and slammed it against the victim’s head, shattering it, police told Cleveland.com.

Authorities said the victim dropped to the floor, and the Buchanans kept beating him, the outlet reported.

After police arrived, the victim told officers he had never seen his attackers before, Cleveland.com said, citing the police report. He added to officers that after he grabbed Barnes’ gun, he realized he couldn’t fire it because it wasn’t loaded, the outlet said.

“The punk didn’t even have a clip in the gun,” the victim added to police, Cleveland.com said, citing their report.

Police said the victim suffered injuries to his face and eyes and a coffee burn to his shoulder, the outlet noted.

Barnes failed to appear for his late-July arraignment after he also was charged with several felonies, including aggravated robbery and felonious assault, Cleveland.com said.

The Buchanans of South Euclid were arrested shortly after the incident, Cleveland.com said.

Police said Leroy Buchanan received head stitches and told officers he was trying to defend his brother and himself, the outlet reported.

The Buchanans were soon arraigned on several felonies, including aggravated robbery and felonious assault, Cleveland.com reported, adding that both brothers pleaded not guilty and were placed on $100,000 bonds.

Last in July, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Richard Bell put the Buchanan brothers on house arrest with monitoring devices, the outlet reported, adding that Cleveland.com and the Plain Dealer reached out to their attorneys for comment.

Barnes failed to appear for his late-July arraignment after he also was charged with several felonies, including aggravated robbery and felonious assault, Cleveland.com said. Authorities issued a warrant for his arrest, the outlet added.

Armed home intruders pistol-whip 5-year-old girl in face — take off with a cell phone

Armed home intruders on Staten Island pistol-whipped a 5-year-old girl in the face early Monday morning — and took off from the premises with a cell phone.

What are the details?

Four suspects, three armed with guns, kicked in the front door of the home near Livingston Avenue and Queen Street around 12:45 a.m., WPIX-TV reported, citing New York City Police.

A 5-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy, a 33-year-old woman, and a 54-year-old resident were inside the home at the time of the break-in, the station said, citing police.

The NYPD released a video from surveillance cameras showing the robbers — wearing hoodies and masks — entering the home and searching the residence with a flashlight, the New York Daily News reported.

The robbers demanded money and jewelry, police said, according to the Daily News, and they pistol-whipped the girl and the woman. The victims suffered facial cuts and bleeding, WPIX said, and were taken to a hospital for treatment. The boy and the 54-year-old resident were not hurt, the paper added.

The suspects stole a cell phone before fleeing the home, police told the station, and there have been no arrests.

Police are asking the public for help identifying the suspects and tracking them down, the Daily News said, adding that anyone with information can confidentially call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.

How have folks been reacting?

Commenters under the New York Post's story about the incident are not happy:

  • "Wonder how many times these winners/grad students have been caught and released with no bail," one commenter said. "The child in the home did not deserve this. ..."
  • "Where was the social service worker to talk them out of this now that nothing is a crime and responsibility is a past tense?" another commenter asked.
  • "Liberal states would rather have dead innocents than armed informed citizens, only one of them is a threat to their tyranny," another commenter said.
  • "Isn't gun control great!!" another commenter exclaimed. "You take the guns away from the law abiding citizens and give them to the criminals."

Wet-behind-the-ears carjackers pistol-whip victim, take his keys — then run into a little problem when they try to drive away

A crew of would-be carjackers managed to pistol-whip their victim and take his keys Sunday night in Bethesda, Maryland but ran into a little problem when they tried to drive off in the vehicle.

Apparently, they couldn't drive stick and gave up on their caper, WTTG-TV reported.

What are the details?

Officers were called to the 7200 block of Wisconsin Avenue around 11:55 p.m. after a report of an attempted carjacking, the station said.

Authorities said the victim was in front of a business when three or four individuals approached him and demanded at gunpoint the keys to his vehicle, WTTG said.

Investigators said the suspects pistol-whipped the man, who ran back into the business, the station said, adding that the victim told police shots were fired, but investigators said no shell casings were found.

However, WTTG said the carjacking encountered a major roadblock when the suspects tried to drive away: they couldn't operate the SUV because it came equipped with a manual transmission.

With that, the suspects fled the scene in a different vehicle, the station said, adding that the victim is recovering from his injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators, WTTG said.

Man pistol-whipped by would-be carjackers foiled by SUV with stick shift in Bethesda, police say youtu.be

Not the first time

Sunday's incident was far from the first time crooks tried and failed to carjack vehicles because they didn't know how to drive stick. Just a few for-instances:

  • Last month, a 23-year-old armed carjacking suspect in San Antonio, Texas, ditched the car he tried to steal because he couldn't drive stick, got into a getaway car, and then actually fired at the victim of the attempted carjacking — who happened to be carrying a gun, too, and shot back at the crook, grazing his head. Soon the mother of the wounded suspect called 911 for her son, who was later hospitalized — and then booked for aggravated robbery after investigators put two and two together.
  • Back in March, two would-be carjackers in Germantown, Maryland — a little over half an hour from the Bethesda incident — came away empty-handed after realizing they couldn't operate the manual transmission vehicle.
  • In October 2021, an MMA-trained man fought back against hapless carjackers in Stafford, Virginia, who still managed to get in his vehicle but couldn't drive away because the crook behind the wheel didn't drive stick. The trio got back into the car they arrived in and were eventually arrested after a dangerous high-speed chase.

14-year-old male armed with handgun, adult accomplice pistol whip victim amid pot-smoking session, steal his phone. So cops use 'Find My iPhone' app to catch them.

A 14-year-old male armed with a handgun — along with a similarly armed adult — pistol whipped a victim in the back of his head during a pot-smoking session in Jonesboro, Georgia, earlier this month and made off with the victim's cellphone, Clayton County Police said.

With that, officers promptly employed the "Find My iPhone" app to locate the suspected perps.

What are the details?

The attack took place around 3 p.m. Jan. 7 at the 6700 block of Tara Boulevard, police said, adding that investigating officers beamed in on the armed suspects' new location using the app.

Turns out the pair were in the area of Jesters Lake Drive and North Main Street, police said. That's about two miles south of the scene of the crime.

The 14-year-old suspect — cops didn't name him or show a photo of him due to his age — complied with all commands and was immediately taken into custody without incident, police said, adding that they found a Google Pixel cellphone and a 9mm handgun in the juvenile’s underwear. Police said the phone and gun were stolen during a different incident.

The 14-year-old was charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a handgun by person under 18, police said.

The adult suspect — identified as Chase Phillips, 21 — tried to get away on foot, but police said they caught him after a short foot chase.

Phillips had a silver/black Bryco Arms handgun on him and was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, contributing the delinquency of a minor, violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, obstruction of an officer, drug-related objects, and pedestrian in the roadway, police said.

Two guns, two cellphones, marijuana, additional magazines, ammunition, and a digital scale were confiscated from both suspects, police said.

The victim of the attack was treated for an injury to the back of his head, cops added.

Video: Thug repeatedly pistol-whips 69-year-old Asian man, steals his watch in northern Calif. Mayor calls broad-daylight attack 'truly shocking.'

A 69-year-old Asian man was repeatedly pistol-whipped and robbed of his watch in a broad-daylight attack caught on home surveillance video last week in northern California, KNTV-TV reported.

The mayor of Daly City — where the attack took place — called it "truly shocking," the station added.

Daly City is about 20 minutes southwest of San Francisco, which has seen a huge spike in brazen crime in the last few years. Violence against Asians has risen in San Francisco and all over the Bay Area as well in that period of time.

What are the details?

Video shows the victim struggling with the suspect next to a pickup truck in the 1300 block of Skyline Drive around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, KNTV reported. The assailant hits the victim multiple times with a handgun as he orders the elderly man to give up his watch.

"Gimme the watch!" the crook is heard hollering at the victim as the sound of the gun smacking against the victim's head also is audible. "Take it off!" he also yells at the elderly man, who can be heard crying out.

Soon the crook appears to take the watch from the victim, after which he runs to a waiting red sports car with tinted windows and hops in the passenger seat. The car's driver of then floors it at a dangerously high speed down the residential street.

KNTV said the victim was treated at the scene for his injuries.

The station said no description was immediately available for the suspect who remained at large Friday. However, video showed the suspect appeared to be wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and white sneakers.

Daly City Mayor Rod Daus-Magbual said in a Friday statement in regard to the incident that the city has "zero tolerance for anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander attacks of any kind," KNTV reported.

The mayor added that he's "working closely with our city's management and police department to ensure a thorough investigation," the station said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Robert McCarthy at 650-991-8174, KNTV added.
