Firefighters conduct dramatic rescue of teen trapped in a 40-foot well
Heroic firefighters rescued a 14-year-old South Carolina boy after he fell into a 40-foot well.
The teen, WBTW-TV reported, likely survived by treading water and clinging to pipes inside the well.
What are the details?
Members of the Gaffney City Fire Department rushed to the scene on Saturday evening to find a teen trapped inside the well.
In a Facebook post on the rescue, a spokesperson for the department said, "At 7:57pm on Saturday May 7, 2022, our department responded to the report of a person that had fallen into a well off of Pacolet Hwy in Gaffney."
"On arrival firefighters found a 14 year old male has fallen appropriately 40 feet into a well," the post continued. "The patient was treading water and able to hold on to pipes in the well to hold himself above water. Crews were able to make voice contact with the patient while crews began to set up for a technical rescue."
A firefighter was lowered into the well at that point and was able to pull the child to safety approximately 30 minutes after the first response time.
"The patient was transferred to EMS and subsequently transported to the hospital for what appeared to be non life threatening injuries," the post concluded.
"Our firefighters train often for these scenarios, that are not routine but they do happen. We’re proud of the professionalism showed by our crews."
What else?
The teen, identified by WSPA-TV as Jaylen Byers, said that he "just fell" into the well while playing with his brother.
“I just fell,” he explained. “While I fell, I just remembered being underwater.”
He said that he was standing on the top of the well, which was covered by a slab of concrete, when the lid crumbled and he fell through.
“I was shocked. I was scared. I was like, ‘What’s going on? How did I just fall down here?’ I didn’t expect it to be a well," he said. "I tried my best to swim back up. I saw a pipe and was hanging on it the whole time.”
Jaylen's brother was the one to rush to the rescue to tell their father what happened.
“I think that is a parent’s biggest fear – not being able to help their child when they need help,” Jaylen's mother, Amy Gordon, told the station. "He said, ‘Momma, my arms and legs are getting tired. I’m scared. Please just hurry.'”
The teen said the next thing he remembered, a firefighter was pulling him to safety.
“I’m a little sore," he said, "but I’m grateful to be here living another day.”
Hero high school basketball coach jumps into action and saves choking student's life
A high school basketball coach is being hailed a hero after he bravely saved a student's life, KETV-TV has reported.
What are the details?
Riley Kelly, a freshman at Papillion-La Vista South High School in Papillion, Nebraska, had just taken a bite of his cheeseburger during Tuesday's lunch period when the meat and bun got caught in his throat, blocking his windpipe.
With shaking hands, Riley tried to chug down some milk to force the blockage through, but the milk ominously sat in his throat and he could not swallow it.
“I just didn’t chew it all the way. I’ve been in situations like this before, where I try to wash it down because I have something stuck in there, and nine times of out 10, it works,” Riley told the station. “And this is the one time it didn’t work.”
The teen added, “I was drinking the milk, and I didn’t feel any milk moving I just felt the milk being held there in my throat. And I couldn’t breathe.”
Coach Joel Hueser — who was monitoring the lunch period — quickly jumped out of his seat when he noticed a nearby teen struggling to breathe.
"It was all so sudden," Riley said. "It was like a flash of lightning in my head but at the same time super slow ... All I remember is just, like, the fear. Next thing you know, I was being saved."
Hueser performed the Heimlich maneuver on Riley, and successfully dislodged the chunk of food from the teen's throat.
He told the station that any teacher in his position would have reacted the same way.
“Any teacher or coach would have done the same thing," the heroic coach insisted. "I just happened to be there"

Two police officers rescue trapped infant after horrific car crash: 'We got a baby under the vehicle!'
Two New York police officers are being hailed as heroes after dramatically rescuing a baby who was trapped underneath a vehicle.
What are the details?
Video surveillance captured the moment a mother and her young child were crossing a New York City street when an out-of-control driver swerved toward them and struck the two.
Video showed the woman and her child flying up onto the hood of the vehicle as it slammed into a what appeared to be barbershop storefront.
Body camera footage from the two officers — identified as Officer Rocco Fusco and Officer Paul Samoyedy, who were next door grabbing breakfast from a bagel shop — then showed the dramatic rescue.
In the video, one person can be heard shouting, "We got a baby under the vehicle!" as a child is heard crying and the woman, screaming.
Another person can be heard shouting, "Grab the baby, grab the baby!"
With the help of bystanders, the officers are able to lift the vehicle off the ground and grab the baby from underneath the vehicle.
The Yonkers Police Department says that the child and mother suffered "significant injuries" but are in stable condition.
Police Commissioner John Mueller added that the woman, who remains unnamed at the time of this reporting, suffered compound leg fractures, and the baby sustained a fractured skull.
What else?
On Sunday, NBC News reported that the mother and child were "doing extremely well."
Authorities arrested the driver, identified as 43-year-old David Poncurak, on DWI charges. He also faces charges of second-degree vehicular assault.
WNYW-TV reported that the vehicle came to a rest so far inside the building that it wasn't visible from a helicopter until crews extracted the vehicle and removed it from the premises via a flatbed truck.
Of the accident, Fusco said, "It's honestly a miracle that both of them survived — very strong mom and an even stronger little infant."
