Liberation theology vs. actual theology: Why illegal immigration is a biblical issue

Abortion and transgenderism are clearly theological issues but what about illegal immigration? Does the Bible have anything to say about illegal immigrants, border walls, or mass deportations?

Some Christians point to Jesus’ words in Matthew 22:39 — “Love your neighbor as yourself” — as evidence that we should welcome what the Democrats euphemistically call “the undocumented” into our country with open arms.

“A lot of you, because you grew up in the era of Hawaiian shirts, pleated khakis, and sweater vests, have been taught that [rejecting illegal immigration] violates loving your neighbor as you love yourself,” says Steve Deace.

These people, Deace explains, have likely been captured by liberation theology — a neo-Marxist, Catholic theological approach born in Latin America that focuses on political liberation of oppressed peoples, placing an emphasis on social activism over doctrine.

It’s heretical.

Deace points out that the current pope, who’s of course “surrounded by his own private army” and lives “in a gated community,” regularly champions the idea that “it’s not Christian to have borders.”

Now that Catholicism in Latin countries has fused with liberation theology, how then did Donald Trump, who heavily staked his campaign on mass deportations, win over more Hispanic voters than any Republican candidate in history?

“What happened was, we went from people who just came here to pick our berries and make our beds in our hotels” to “an entire generation born and bred in Latin American Catholicism by liberation theology,” says Deace, adding that these people “believe they are entitled” to be here.

“The generation of people who came here in the '80s and '90s to pick the berries and make the beds and mow the lawns ... they’ve now worked their way up,” and they’re mortified by the people who are coming here to “collect a welfare check” because “they view themselves as entitled.”

On top of that, the Bible does explicitly address illegal immigration.

“Are there mass deportations in the Bible? Are there walls built by God’s people to secure their borders?” Steve asks rhetorically.

“Yes! In fact, there’s an entire book called Nehemiah. That’s literally all the book is about,” he says. “They mass deport people who don’t belong in the country, including women and children ... and they literally go to war with their neighbors to rebuild a wall to secure their borders."

“So the answer is yes.”

Here’s what we do about the allegations against Matt Gaetz

Every single one of Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks has been followed by immediate wailing and gnashing of teeth on the left, but the award for the most controversial pick goes to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who is nominated to the role of attorney general.

Steve Deace, however, is “here for it” — not just for the appointment of Gaetz but for the full panel Trump has chosen to be in his administration and their collective mentality to “[bring] this whole thing down.”

“This is Hulk smash,” says Deace in reference to Trump’s appointees.

However, “this Cabinet appointment of Gaetz is the biggest middle-finger appointment in the history of the U.S. presidency,” he says.

While Steve isn’t sure if Gaetz is “a righteous person,” as “there are serious [sex trafficking] allegations against [him],” he also knows that this DOJ has no qualms about “indicting Republicans or conservatives,” especially the anti-establishment type.

If the allegations against Gaetz, who is undeniably a firebrand, are true, why hasn’t he been indicted already?

Steve says that there are two possibilities here: One, “this Department of Justice knowingly allowed a creeper to sit in a congressional seat for the last few years.” Or two, “they don’t have the goods, and they’re smearing [Gaetz].”

However, Steve says there’s “a way we get clarity.”

“Let’s have a confirmation hearing. … Why don’t we just call witnesses, [Gaetz] calls his, people testify, and let’s find out?” he proposes.

Some may think that a hearing is impossible now that Gaetz has resigned his congressional seat and Congress no longer has jurisdiction over him, but Steve says the investigators can “still release their report.”

“Are you guys just sick of being told stuff but never being shown stuff?” Steve asks in frustration. “I sure as hell am.”

Electoral environment bodes well for Republicans — but one nefarious F-word still lurks in the background

The Kamala Harris campaign has two pillars holding it up: “baby killing” and the narrative “[Trump] is literally Hitler.”

“They don’t have anything else to run on,” says Steve Deace.

According to Gallup’s most recent favorability polling, it would seem as if the Democrats’ two pillars are beginning to crumble.

Currently, Trump’s total favorable rating sits at a 50, while Harris’ sits at a 48. However, those numbers are reversed on the unfavorable scale. Harris’ total unfavorable rating is 50, while Trump’s is 48.

While this certainly is a positive sign for Republicans, Steve says we can’t forget about the thing that’s “lurking there in the background.”

It’s the F-word we all dread: fraud.

Steve points to Maricopa County, Arizona, saying, "'I don't know, guys, it might take us a couple weeks [to count the votes]”’ as an example of a glaring sign of impending fraudulent activity.

“In fairness to them, given how Trump is surging in the polls right now, they don't have any clue how many votes they're going to actually need, so it may take them longer to conjure them up. I'm sorry — to count them. Count. Wrong C-word,” Steve jests.

While Steve is being humorous, "what lingers underneath the surface" is the gnawing fear that Trump will win and still not see the Oval Office — especially considering that there’s an overwhelming amount of evidence that that's exactly what happened in the 2020 election.

“Nothing substantive was done about it for the last four years. Lots of people built massive engagement farms, wringing their hands about it. ... Lots of money was raised to stop the stealing from happening,” but “no Krakens were ever released,” he sighs. “The polling is still close enough perceptively that you could justify stealing it if you wanted to try.”

While “the margin of cheating is definitely lower than it was a few weeks ago ... we're not outside of it yet by any means,” warns Steve.
