NHL superstar Johnny Gaudreau and brother killed by suspected drunk driver on eve of sister's wedding: 'Unimaginable tragedy'

NHL superstar Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were killed on Thursday night — a day before their sister's wedding.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were riding bicycles down a road in Oldmans Township, New Jersey.

'Both Matty and Johnny were terrifically admired by all of us. Wonderful young guys, and they impressed a lot of us off-ice.'

A Jeep Grand Cherokee attempted to pass a slower-moving sedan and an SUV while traveling north on County Route 551, police told WPVI.

The driver of the Grand Cherokee — 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins of Woodstown – fatally hit the Gaudreau brothers, Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron of the New Jersey State Police said in a statement on Friday.

The Gaudreau brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Higgins was charged with two counts of death by auto and is being held at the Salem County Correctional Facility.

Higgins was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the deadly accident, Lebron stated.

Citing the police affidavit, WPVI reported the state trooper who arrived at the scene detected a "strong odor of alcohol" on the driver. Higgins allegedly told the trooper he had consumed "five to six beers" before the fatal crash. The outlet reported that Higgins told investigators that his consumption of alcohol contributed to his impatience and reckless driving, according to the criminal complaint.

The trooper allegedly said Higgins failed a field sobriety test.

The Columbus Blue Jackets confirmed the sudden death of the NHL superstar with a statement that called the fatal crash an "unimaginable tragedy."

"The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy," the statement read. "Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend."

"Johnny played the game with great joy which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice," the Blue Jackets said. "He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets. He thrilled fans in a way only Johnny Hockey could."

"The impact he had on our organization and our sport was profound, but pales in comparison to the indelible impression he made on everyone who knew him," the statement continued. "Johnny embraced our community when he arrived two years ago, and Columbus welcomed him with open arms."

The statement concluded, "We will miss him terribly and do everything that we can to support his family and each other through this tragedy. At this time, we ask for prayers for the Gaudreau family and that their privacy be respected as they grieve."

Johnny played two seasons with the Blue Jackets and nine seasons with the Calgary Flames.

The Calgary Flames said in a statement, "It’s with great sadness, we mourn the tragic deaths of our friend Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau. Our hearts are broken by this devastating loss. Johnny was and always will be a member of the Flames family and loved by all of Calgary."

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement, "The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew."

"While Johnny’s infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey,’ he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother, and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path," Bettman stated.

"Gaudreau often told the story of how his father taught him to skate as a child in his home state of New Jersey and he carried that same youthful passion throughout his 11 NHL seasons," Bettmen added. "A skilled playmaker, Gaudreau participated in the NHL All-Star Game seven times where he was always a fan favorite, particularly while showcasing his talents in the various skills competitions for which he was so well suited."

Both Gaudreau brothers were hockey teammates at Boston College before Johnny was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2011.

Jerry York — who coached the Gaudreau brothers at Boston College — told the Associated Press, "Just devastating news for all of us connected with the Gaudreau family. Both Matty and Johnny were terrifically admired by all of us. Wonderful young guys, and they impressed a lot of us off-ice."

Johnny scored 20-plus goals six times and was a 115-point player in the 2021-2022 season when he had a career-best 40 goals and 75 assists.

Matthew was also a professional hockey player who spent time in the AHL and ECHL.

Johnny Gaudreau is survived by his wife, Meredith Gaudreau, and their two young children, 1-year-old daughter, Noa, and 6-month-old son, Johnny Jr.

Johnny and Matthew had been set to attend the wedding of their sister, Katie Gaudreau. The wedding ceremony is scheduled for Friday afternoon in New Jersey and a reception in Philadelphia later that night.

The brothers were supposed to be groomsmen during the wedding ceremony, according to the bride-to-be's wedding page.

This is the second tragedy for the Blue Jackets in recent years.

Columbus goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died in July 2021 when the 24-year-old was struck in the chest by a firework while attending the wedding of the daughter of then-Blue Jackets goaltending coach Manny Legace in Novi, Michigan.

High school baseball star declared brain dead from freak accident during practice; faith in Jesus giving family strength

A high school baseball star suffered a freak accident during practice in November and has now been declared brain dead by his doctors.

Jeremy Medina, 17, was at baseball practice in Georgia on Nov. 20. Medina suffered a horrific injury when he allegedly leaned into a batting cage net while a teammate was hitting balls.

Gainesville High School Principal Jamie Green explained, "As a player followed through on his swing, Jeremy leaned into the net and was struck in the head. There is no horseplay, no misconduct, and no intent."

Medina was rushed to the hospital and has been hospitalized in a coma ever since.

"The initial trauma to his head was significant and caused him to lose consciousness, and as he lost consciousness, he lost his ability to maintain his airway," said Dr. Michael Cormican, the director of Surgical Critical Care at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, according to WAGA-TV.

Medina was put on life support at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

On Wednesday, Cormican revealed the tragic news that Medina had "progressed to death by neurological criteria, or brain dead."

Cormican added, "I've got a teenage son myself, and honestly, I can't imagine the pain the family has had to deal with."

Jeremy's father, David Medina, announced that they would donate the teenage athlete’s organs and tissue.

"Not only will lives be saved and improved, but the family members, friends, and communities of those who receive his organs and tissues will be forever impacted by the memories made possible thanks to a second chance at life," the distraught father said. "Although his life ended so young, Jeremy’s legacy will continue through his selfless decision to give the gift of life. We encourage others to consider following Jeremy’s example and register your decision to be an organ and tissue donor."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, "The family and close friends will perform an honor walk with Jeremy’s body when it is taken to the operating room for the organ donation procedures, pastor Frank Medina, Jeremy’s uncle, said. The date and time for the honor walk are still to be determined, and Jeremy will be laid to rest after the procedure."

Medina said the family has relied on their faith to get through the heartbreaking situation.

"We are a family of faith. We walk by faith and not sight," Medina proclaimed.

"I just want everyone to be sure that our strength, my family's strength, my strength since day one has been and only been rooted in the most amazing power of Jesus Christ, our savior, and our redemptor," he declared.

Medina said his family is "so grateful" for the prayers and thoughts of people around the world.

"All these people don't even know my son — don't even know my family — but they are together with us in prayer and supporting us in this moment," Medina said.

Jeremy Medina was a devout Christian who hoped to become a youth minister, according to his father.

Jeremy was a senior in high school, where he was a catcher and a pitcher.

6-year-old boy dies from same lightning bolt that killed his father a month ago: 'I love you buddy'

A Texas boy passed away from the same lightning bolt that killed his father a month ago.

Around 5 p.m. on May 15, Matthew Boggs and his two sons were walking home after being dropped off at a school bus stop. Boggs was holding hands with his 6-year-old son, while the 11-year-old son walked on the other side of the driveway by the home in Bosque County.

Matthew's mother Angela told KWTX-TV in May, “He just got done telling Grayson — he said, 'I love you buddy.' That’s when the lightning came down."

A lightning bolt struck the father, and the electricity flowed through his hands to his 6-year-old son. The elder son, Elijah, was nearby when his father and brother were struck by lightning.

The force of the lightning strike knocked the shoes off the father and son, according to Fox Weather. They landed face down on the pavement.

Family members quickly rolled the 34-year-old father over, but his face had already turned blue. Life-saving measures were given to Matthew and Grayson.

Matthew was pronounced dead.

Grayson was found "unresponsive, but breathing." He was rushed to the Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center in Temple, Texas. He was put on a ventilator.

KCEN-TV reported, "He started breathing on his own, but was then put on a feeding tube, according to family posts on Facebook."

Grayson was placed in palliative care on June 14, according to a GoFundMe page.

Grayson Boggs died at 5:05 a.m. on June 16, a month after his father passed away.

"Please pray for the family at this time. Fly high, sweet boy," a message read on the crowdfunding site.

At the time of publication, the GoFundMe raised more than $90,000 for the Boggs family in the wake of the tragedy of losing the young boy.

Including the father and son, there have been seven Americans killed by lightning in 2023, according to the National Lightning Safety Council. There were reportedly 19 deaths from lightning strikes in 2022.

2-year-old daughter of Tampa Bay Buccaneers star linebacker drowned to death in family pool

The 2-year-old daughter of Tampa Bay Buccaneers star linebacker Shaquil Barrett drowned to death in a swimming pool at the family's home on Sunday, according to police.

Around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a call about a child who had fallen into the family pool of Barrett's home in the Beach Park neighborhood in South Tampa. Barrett's 2-year-old daughter Arrayah was rushed to a local hospital, but she was later pronounced dead.

Police said, "The investigation is ongoing. It is not believed to be suspicious in nature at this time, but a purely accidental and tragic incident."

Barrett and his wife Jordanna have three other children, but Arrayah was their youngest child.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released a statement, "Today's tragic news is heartbreaking for all members of the Buccaneers family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shaq, Jordanna and the entire Barrett family during this unimaginably difficult time."

"While no words can provide true comfort at a time such as this," the NFL team added. "We offer our support and love as they begin to process this very profound loss of their beloved Arrayah."

The Tampa Police Department is investigating the sudden death.

On April 19, Barrett wished his daughter a happy second birthday in an Instagram post.

"Happy 2nd bday to my cutie girl. So sweet and cute. You made our family complete. I love you baby girl," Barrett wrote on Instagram.

Barrett is currently recovering from a torn Achilles injury that sidelined him for the second half of last season. Barrett is entering his fifth season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after starting the first four years of his NFL career with the Denver Broncos. In 2019, Barrett led the NFL with 19½ sacks. Barrett is a two-time Pro Bowl player and two-time Super Bowl champion.
