Woman taken into custody after reportedly stabbing three including a 71-year-old at Atlanta airport

A crazed woman is in custody after allegedly stabbing three people Wednesday at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

According to the City of Atlanta Police Department, officers encountered 44-year-old Damaris Milton brandishing a knife outside the security checkpoint, walking to the South Terminal.

Footage of the incident shows the suspect screaming, pointing the knife threateningly, and taunting police.

APD Sgt. John Chafee told WSB-TV, "Officers encountered her, began to talk her into dropping the knife, limited her movement."

Rather than comply, the suspect stabbed a female airport clerk and the APD lieutenant who had attempted to take her into custody.

Police sources told WAGA-TV that the knife struck an artery in the 71-year-old lieutenant's leg and nicked the clerk.

After this initial bloodletting, another officer managed to tackle the suspect to the ground and disarm her. Later, police learned that the suspect had allegedly stabbed the driver of a taxi who had taken her to the airport.

Police indicated all three victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and are expected to recover.

The airport reportedly gave the all-clear roughly 40 minutes after the initial stabbing. No flights were reportedly canceled.

Milton, apparently a resident of Orlando, Florida, was taken by Jonesboro Police Department officers to the Clayton County Jail. She has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that authorities are investigating what led to the stabbings, which appear to have been random.

"It doesn't appear that there's a connection between her and them, but that’s something we'll be looking into," said Sgt. Chafee.

Georgia AG tells Atlanta media to stop referring to rioters as 'protesters': 'Peaceful protesters use words ... rioters set police cars on fire'

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr told media members in Atlanta to stop referring to the "Cop City" rioters as "protesters" amid lawlessness in the city this weekend.

"To the Atlanta Media: Peaceful protestors use words. Rioters smash windows, set police cars on fire & shoot law enforcement officers" Carr tweeted Saturday. "Stop calling these people protesters."

“To the Atlanta Media:

Peaceful protestors use words.

Rioters smash windows, set police cars on fire & shoot law enforcement officers.

Stop calling these people protesters.

@FOX5Atlanta @ajc @wsbtv @11Alive @gpbnews
@GBI_GA @ga_dps @AtlantaPolice”
— Chris Carr (@Chris Carr) 1674345372

Carr issued hashtags linked to local stations WAGA-TV, WSB-TV, WXIA-TV, GPB News, as well as to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper.

What's the background?

Multiple videos showed rioting Saturday amid a protest over a fatal police shooting at the future Atlanta Public Safety Training Center nicknamed "Cop City." Activist Manuel Esteban Paez Teran — who called himself "Tortuguita" — allegedly shot a Georgia State Patrol trooper, after which, law enforcement returned fire, killing Teran, who was 26.

The protest for Teran turned violent within an hour as rioters launched fireworks and threw large rocks at the Atlanta Police Foundation building in downtown Atlanta. Two police cruisers were set on fire, bricks were thrown at other APD vehicles, and windows of local businesses were smashed.

What did media outlets do?

Media outlets, while acknowledging the rioting, still emphasized that the protest began as "peaceful."

NPR, for example, wrote that "the initial hour of the demonstration had been peaceful ..."

A WAGA-TV reporter — narrating during a live video showing a vehicle fire raging in the background — said "it was a largely peaceful protest":

“Local Atlanta reporter calls the protest in Atlanta "largely peaceful protest" as a police cruiser is on fire in the background.

You can't make this stuff up.”

Freelance journalist David Peisner raised the question to CNN — as videos of the chaos in Atlanta flashed onscreen — if property destruction can be considered violence.

"I think that there’s a real blurring of the lines in the use of the word 'violence.' Is property destruction violence? To some people it certainly is. But, you know, this idea that breaking windows or other acts of property destruction are the same as actual violence against humans, it’s kind of a dangerous and slippery concept," Peisner said.

He continued: "Look, I don't think this is a smart move. I don't think it's a productive move from the standpoint of the protesters, but as the chief himself said, this is a small group ... you keep using these words ‘violent, violent, violent, violent' ... the only acts of violence against people that I saw were actually police tackling protesters."

Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted Saturday that "violence and unlawful destruction of property are not acts of protest. They are crimes that will not be tolerated in Georgia and will be prosecuted fully."

Hand-to-hand drug deal occurs during jury selection of RICO trial: Report

Two of 14 defendants standing trial in a RICO case regarding alleged gang activity in Atlanta, Georgia, have reportedly made the prosecution's case against them a bit stronger. According to reports, the two conducted a hand-to-hand drug deal in open court during jury selection proceedings this week.

On Wednesday, defendant Jeffrey Williams, 31, better known as the rapper Young Thug, was in the Fulton County Courthouse sitting next to his attorney when fellow defendant Kahlieff Adams stood up in the back of the courtroom and began walking toward the front. Before he turned toward a door, which some have indicated is a restroom, Adams reached out and grasped Williams' right hand, and Williams immediately placed his hand underneath the table in front of him.

Deputies then converged on Williams, suggesting that they sensed Williams and Adams had done more than simply shake hands. Williams then handed over to the deputies an item in his hand, which officials later claimed was a Percocet pill.

“EXCLUSIVE: My colleague @MarkWinneWSB just obtained surveillance video that shows the moment prosecutors accuse Young Thug and his co defendant Kahlieff Adams of conducting a “hand-to-hand” drug deal in court.@wsbtv”
— Michael Seiden (@Michael Seiden) 1674169909

When Adams was searched, deputies reportedly found Percocet, marijuana, and tobacco that had been covered with food seasoning to mask the odor. He was later transported to Grady Hospital after he supposedly consumed other contraband in an effort to destroy evidence.

Adams now faces a handful of new charges: possession of schedule II controlled substance, willful obstruction of law enforcement, possession of marijuana less than one ounce, possession of alcoholic beverage by inmate, and willful obstruction of law enforcement officers. He is currently serving life without parole for a previous murder conviction.

Keith Adams, one of Williams’ attorneys, denied that his client has any culpability in the incident. "The reality is Mr. Williams had nothing to do with what went on in the courtroom yesterday," the attorney said. "One of the co-defendants on his way to the restroom attempted to pass something to Mr. Williams, who immediately turned it over to the deputy."

Keith Adams also claimed that Williams did not even know what defendant Adams had allegedly passed to him. "We don’t know what it is, did not know," the attorney stated. "It was turned over to a deputy right away."

The supposed drug transaction forced a delay in the proceedings, which have already become tediously long. Judge Ural Glanville had to read the entire 95-page indictment for prospective jurors that day and had to do it all again for hundreds of prospective jurors the following day as well.

Earlier this week, the mother of one of the defendants was arrested after deputies claimed she tried to hide an envelope containing tobacco wrapping papers and tobacco products in a bag of clothing that she then gave to her son. Latasha Kendrick, the 51-year-old mother of Deamonte Kendrick, aka Yak Gotti, has been charged with one count of criminal attempt to commit a misdemeanor. A warrant has also been issued for Nyesha Cox, the mother of Deamonte Kendrick's child, in connection to the incident, though Cox has not yet been arrested.

All 14 defendants in the RICO case are supposedly members of a gang called Young Slime Life or YSL, which has allegedly committed heinous acts of violence all over the Atlanta area since its inception in 2012. For example, several of the defendants have been implicated in the murder of rival gang leader Donovan Thomas Jr. in 2015. Williams allegedly rented a car used in the commission of that crime. YSL has also allegedly been linked to the Bloods, a notorious gang that began in Los Angeles in the early 1970s but now has affiliations throughout the country.

The defendants deny that their association is a gang and insist instead that they are a collective of local black artists. That prosecutors have submitted as evidence rap lyrics written by Williams and other defendants seems both to undermine and reify that notion, just as it tests the limits of free speech. The entire RICO trial is expected to last at least a year.

Disturbing video shows VA employee choking, kicking, and body-slamming 73-year-old Vietnam vet

A Veterans Affairs employee was caught on video choking, kicking, and body-slamming a 73-year-old Vietnam vet.

WSB-TV released surveillance video from a violent altercation between a VA patient advocate and an elderly man on April 28 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Clinic at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. WSB-TV investigative reporter Justin Gray filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to acquire the surveillance video of the physical confrontation.

Phillip Webb was at the VA clinic to discuss a hernia surgery with a patient advocate named Lawrence F. Gaillard Jr.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website defines a patient advocate as "an employee who is specifically designated at each VHA facility to manage the feedback received from veterans, family members, and friends." The patient advocate "works directly with management and employees to facilitate resolutions."

Webb said he simply knocked on the door in the waiting room to inform Gaillard that he was going to the bathroom before the appointment.

“I guess he got upset because I hit at his door,” Webb told WSB-TV.

The two men are in an office when Gaillard puts his finger in the face of Webb – who quickly slaps his hand away. Gaillard escalates the tense situation by brutally attacking the Vietnam veteran.

They tussle for a few seconds until Gaillard fiercely slams Webb up against the wall, as seen in the shocking video. The patient advocate angrily chokes the veteran, then viciously body slams the elderly man as eyeglasses soar across the room.

Gaillard then stomps the helpless man in the throat and back of the head. The VA employee then wound up and kicked the defenseless man in the head.

The Veterans Affairs employee retrieves the eyeglasses and leaves the room.

"He was Mike Tyson-ing me there," Webb told WSB-TV. "I'm just stunned. I don’t know what to say."

Following the attack, Webb was hospitalized for three days with a brain bleed.

The VA issued a statement: "We are horrified at the video of a V.A. employee assaulting a Veteran at the Atlanta VA Health Care System on April 28. This disturbing behavior is contrary to our core values of treating Veterans with the dignity and respect they deserve. We take this matter seriously and will cooperate fully with Fulton County law enforcement.”

Gaillard was arrested and charged with felony assault. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating the brutal assault.

VA Press Secretary Terrence Hayes told Military.com, "The employee has been indefinitely suspended without pay. The indefinite suspension is in place, and we are unable to comment further as the matter remains under investigation."
