Tonight, Republican voters in Florida will nominate a candidate to run for governor, as term-limited Gov. Rick Scott, R, is running for U.S Senate.
The front-runner is Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., a member of the House Freedom Caucus who represents Florida's 6th Congressional District in the House of Representatives. DeSantis is a Navy veteran who previously served as a JAG prosecutor, working to support counterterrorism operations. He is endorsed by President Donald Trump, Fox News host Sean Hannity, and his HFC colleague Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.
His closest rival and the Florida establishment candidate is state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. Putnam is a former congressman and former member of the state house, endorsed by state house Speaker Richard Corcoran and the Florida Chamber of Commerce.
The Real Clear Politics average of polls shows DeSantis leading Putnam and several other candidates, though the race has tightened in the final weeks of the campaign. Florida is a closed primary state, meaning voters must affiliate with a political party to vote in that party's primary elections. The polls will close at 7:00 p.m. ET.
