This was a vote on the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act, a bill to prohibit federal taxpayer dollars from going toward abortion and health benefits plans that include coverage of abortion. This bill would make the Hyde amendment — which bans federal funds from being used to pay for abortions — permanent law.
Traditionally, Congress prohibited federal funds from paying for abortions. But with the passage of Obamacare, the floodgates were opened for federally funded abortions. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, received over $1.5 billion in taxpayer dollars from 2013 to 2015.
This legislation would prohibit federal funds for abortions and ensure that taxpayers are not paying for the destruction of human lives.
Senate Democrats and Republican Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, successfully blocked the bill on January 17, 2019, at 4:11 p.m. in a roll call vote of 48 – 47.
