Watch: Rep. Dave Brat tells Eric Bolling what it takes to get an 'A' Liberty Score

On Wednesday's "America," CRTV host Eric Bolling interviewed Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., about his tight re-election campaign and what Republicans need to do to keep their majorities.

Brat is running for re-election in Virginia's 7th Congressional District against a tough opponent, Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger. Spanberger is a former operations officer for the CIA and is portraying herself as a nonpartisan public servant without a commitment to political ideology. She's been endorsed by former President Barack Obama. Brat, a House Freedom Caucus conservative, has been criticized as too ideological.

Bolling asked Brat about his near-perfect Conservative Review Liberty Score and what it means to be conservative. Brat answered that the Left likes to make fun of him for being a "right-winger," but what being conservative actually means is "you follow the Constitution and you keep your promises to the American people, and you're a free-market advocate for the small businessperson instead of all the crony elites up here."

Brat explained what sets the Conservative Review Liberty Score "apart from the pack": "It's just keeping your word. Everyone says we're going to go up and downsize the federal government, we're going to downsize the Swamp. It just got bigger this year," Brat added.

He explained how he's fought for conservative priorities in the House of Representatives, but noted that sadly, most members of Congress are not keeping their promises to the American people.

"When I came in, I made a series of promises. I put in a balanced budget amendment; I put in a term limit bill. And then the problem is, only 45 folks out of 450 signed on to those balanced budget measures, etc. And so the Swamp's still in charge," Brat said.

Bolling asked for the congressman's thoughts on the top issues voters in his district want Republicans to lead on. Brat named creating a skilled workforce, repealing Obamacare, and funding Trump's immigration policies as leading issues for Republicans.

"Immigration is huge," Brat said, lamenting that Congress hasn't authorized funding for a border wall. He said failing to secure the border has caused many problems and has contributed to the nation's opioid crisis.

"It's not just immigration, right? We had 300 million illegal, lethal doses of fentanyl come across the border last year. Heroin, [the] opioid crisis, trafficking is linked to that. Depression, suicide, family breakdown, it's all part of the same thing, and it's all linked to the rule of law," Brat said.

The heart of Brat's re-election pitch is that he is a conservative who, in his time in Congress, has fought to keep the promises Republicans made to the American people. "If you're not going to do it, don't promise the American people," Brat says.
