Liberals pounce on joke told by Rittenhouse judge to accuse him of racism and demand a mistrial

Many liberals pounced on a joke told by the judge in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse Thursday to accuse him of racism and call for a mistrial.

Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Schroeder was speaking about the court's plans for lunch when he made a joke about the supply chain issues at Long Beach Harbor in California.

"I hope the Asian food isn't coming ... isn't on one of those boats from Long Beach Harbor," he said.

Video of the innocuous joke was posted to Twitter by CNN reporter Kyung Lah. Julia Vargas Jones, a field producer for CNN, replied that "the media room let out a collective gasp."

Some social media users immediately accused the judge of racism and demanded that a mistrial be called.

"My brain hurts with this whole trial. Did the judge just make a slight against Asian people??" replied MSNBC contributor Katie Phang.

"Racist, me thinks, the judge, is," tweeted epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding. "What a complete joke and circus this #KyleRittenhouseTrial now is."

"Wtf the prosecution will ask for a mistrial or for judge to step down," tweeted one detractor. "The trial can't be completed with comments from the sitting judge like that. This is gross misconduct for these comments in bad jokes."

"This judge is a kooky control freak who loves to hear himself talk. His inane comments and interference are annoying. He just made a joke about how he 'hopes the Asian food isn't stuck in the harbor' - wtf? This is a garbage trial," said one critic.

"At first I thought he was making some local reference about Kenosha, albeit still somewhat offensive. But there is no Long Beach in Wisconsin; he's talking about Long Beach, CA, isn't he?— and injecting national politics into the trial—with a bit of bigotry on the side," said another critic.

"The good old American Justice System A white racist Judge, presiding over a murder trial by a White Racist This judge is itching to mistrial this case and save the poor white killer from justice," read another tweet.

A similar effort developed on Wednesday when the judge's cellphone went off during the case and revealed a patriotic ringtone. Many on the left called it a sign that the judge was a Trump supporter and demanded a mistrial.

Liberals demand new judge in Rittenhouse case after his phone rings during trial with patriotic ringtone

While many of the developments of the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse appeared to go south for the prosecution Wednesday, some on the left demanded a new judge after his phone rang during the trial and revealed a patriotic ringtone.

Rittenhouse is on trial for shooting three protesters during political unrest in August 2020 in the wake of the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Two of the three protesters died.

On Wednesday Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Schroeder berated the assistant district attorney for Kenosha County in what many saw as a sign that the case was possibly headed towards a dismissal by mistrial.

In response, many on the left latched on to the idea that the judge's ringtone was evidence that he was biased in favor of Rittenhouse.

Among those were the former White House photographer during the Obama administration, Pete Souza, who tweeted, "Mistrial. Assign a new judge."

The incident was captured by some on video and circulated on social media.

"Schroeder doesn't seem to care about maintaining even a veneer of fairness. He's outright performing for the Fox News lemmings," said Democratic activist Lindy Li.

"Apparently, the judge in the Rittenhouse case has Lee Greenwood as his ringtone. That's literally the MAGA national anthem. Can't we just jump ahead to the appeal?" tweeted writer Bryan Behar.

"Laying odds Rittenhouse defies justice with his white privilege card. Which, to his amazing luck, is accepted by the white judge with the Trump Rally opening song as his ringtone," said one critic.

"'God Bless the USA' is the opening song played at every Trump rally. Lee Greenwood literally sang it at Trump's inauguration. It is the ringtone of the judge in the Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial," tweeted author Mikel Jollett.

"The judge's ringtone this afternoon is the cherry on this turd of a trial," read one tweet.
