Disney announces it will revamp 'Snow White' following Peter Dinklage's 'dwarf' criticism

Disney is retooling its live-action remake of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" following actor Peter Dinklage's criticism, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

What are the details?

Dinklage on Monday told podcast host Marc Maron that he couldn't understand why Disney would make a live-action film featuring dwarves.

“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White — but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," he complained. "Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that f***ing backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together? What the f*** are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Following his remarks, a spokesperson for Disney said that its production company plans to take a "different approach" in casting and developing the seven dwarves.

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community," the spokesperson told the outlet. "We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period."

During the Maron interview, 52-year-old Dinklage — who was born with a condition called achondroplasia — added that the only way he'd be on board with supporting the film (with which he is not involved in any capacity at the time of this reporting) would be if production decided to take a wild, "f***ed up" spin on the story.

“If you tell the story of Snow White with the most f***ed up, cool, or progressive spin? Let’s do it,” he said. “All in.”

Actor Peter Dinklage blasts Disney's remake of 'Snow White': 'You’re making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together?'

Actor Peter Dinklage says that Disney must be out of its mind for deciding to remake 1938's hit animated film "Snow White" due to its "f***ing backwards" depiction of dwarves.

The Mouse House's new live-action remake is set to star Latina actress Rachel Zegler as Snow White and is set to kick off production in the coming months.

What are the details?

During a recent appearance on Marc Maron's "WTF Podcast," Dinklage said that he was shocked to see that Disney would want to remake the iconic story for a 2022 audience.

Dinklage, 52, was born with a condition called achondroplasia.

“There's a lot of hypocrisy going on. Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” he complained. “Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me."

Dinklage then went on to suggest that he feels personally slighted due to his self-proclaimed activism status.

“You’re progressive in one way but then you’re still making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f*** are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box?" he continued. "I guess I’m not loud enough. I don’t know which studio that is but they were so proud of it. All love and respect to the actress and all the people who thought they were doing the right thing. But I’m just like, what are you doing?”

The "Game of Thrones" actor added that only he'll sign off on the film so long as its producers handle the remake in the most "f***ed up" or most "progressive" of ways possible.

“If you tell the story of Snow White with the most f***ed up, cool, or progressive spin? Let’s do it,” he said. “All in.”

The latest live-action remake is one of many, including 2017's "Beauty and the Beast," 2015's "Cinderella," 2016's "The Jungle Book," and more.

The studio has yet to announce a release date for its latest project.

Anything else to know?

Dinklage said in 2019 that he believed political correctness surrounding dwarfism can be damaging.

In a wide-ranging interview with the New Yorker, Dinklage said that he doesn't "care" about being politically correct when it comes to discussing his condition.

“I myself am not always the most politically correct person in terms of my dwarfism. I don’t care, really. I think that can be damaging as well," he said at the time. “For example, if I see a kid and he’s pointing at me, and the parent has him look the other way, what’s that kid going to grow up into? Somebody who can’t make eye contact with somebody who’s four and a half feet tall? That’s sad to me.”

He continued, “I understand it in the moment, because they don’t want to embarrass me. And, what, are we going to have an educational seminar walking down the street? There’s no time for that. But those little things add up in our DNA in terms of how we see people who are physically unique, and that can be destructive."
