'The American people will not tolerate this injustice': Republicans lambaste Trump indictment as weaponization of the justice system

Republicans are decrying the indictment of former President Donald Trump as the weaponization of the justice system — the former president and current 2024 presidential candidate was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg of seeking to meddle in the 2024 presidential contest.

"Alvin Bragg has irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election. As he routinely frees violent criminals to terrorize the public, he weaponized our sacred system of justice against President Donald Trump. The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account," McCarthy declared.

"The sham New York indictment of President Donald Trump is one of the clearest examples of extremist Democrats weaponizing government to attack their political opponents. Outrageous," tweeted House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.).

GOP Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio referred to the indictment as "political persecution masquerading as law" as well as "a grave miscarriage of justice" and declared that "Bragg's decision to indict him is blatant election interference and a direct assault on the tens of millions of Americans who support" Trump.

"The Democrat Party’s hatred for Donald Trump knows no bounds. The 'substance' of this political persecution is utter garbage. This is completely unprecedented and is a catastrophic escalation in the weaponization of the justice system," GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas tweeted.

"We all know that the RINOs are secretly happy about the indictment, but the fascist left won't stop with Trump," Donald Trump Jr. tweeted. "They're power-hungry & will do anything to crush their political opponents. If we're ever going to save our country, the entire GOP needs to finally figure that out."

"This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history," former President Trump himself said in a statement on Thursday.

Trump announced last year that he is running for president again.

"This evening we contacted Mr. Trump's attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan D.A.'s Office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal," a spokesperson noted in a statement posted on the Manhattan DA Twitter account. "Guidance will be provided when the arraignment date is selected."
