DHS expects up to 18,000 illegal immigrants a day once Title 42 is lifted

As many as 18,000 migrants could illegally cross the southern border per day once the Trump-era Title 42 regulation is repealed by the Biden administration.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledged that lifting the regulation will increase strain on federal offices that are already stretched thin in their pursuit to contain the ongoing immigration crisis at the country’s southern border, but the New York Post reported he still intends to move forward with Title 42’s repeal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) instituted Title 42 during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. It grants border officials the ability to immediately expel migrants trying to illegally enter the U.S. through its shared southern border with Mexico.

While on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Mayorkas said, “Title 42 is a public health authority. So, what we started to do in September of last year was to prepare for its end.”

“We’re not projecting 18,000, but what we do in the department is we plan for different scenarios,” Mayorkas continued. “So, we’re ready for anything.”

When the show’s host, Dana Bash, pressed Mayorkas on whether the Department of Homeland Security would be able to handle an influx of migrants that size, he said the department would be prepared, but the system would be put under “extraordinary strain.”

Mayorkas said, “It is our responsibility to be prepared for different scenarios, and that is what we are doing, and we have incredibly talented and dedicated people. There is no question if in fact we reach that number, that is going to be an extraordinary strain on our system.”

He continued, “That is why the plan we have prepared calls for a number of different actions, not just the domestic arena but also with our partners in the south.”

This past month, in a move that garnered bipartisan criticism, the CDC announced that it would allow Title 42 to expire in late May.

In March 2022, there were more than 220,000 encounters between illegal immigrants and border officials. This is the highest number of any month since the start of Joe Biden’s presidency.

In response to this, lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives took Mayorkas to task over the Biden administration’s inability to end the seemingly perpetual influx of illegal immigrants.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) grilled Mayorkas, telling him that by allowing Title 42 to be repealed he was “going to make it worse.”

Jordan said, “We have a secretary of Homeland Security who is intentionally, deliberately, in a premeditated fashion … executing a plan to overwhelm our country with millions and millions of illegal migrants.”

Warren Buffett slams Wall Street for becoming a 'gambling parlor'

Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, condemned Wall Street for encouraging speculative behavior in the stock market, effectively turning one of America’s largest financial institutions into a “gambling parlor.”

The 91-year-old executive made the comments on Saturday during his company’s annual shareholder meeting. The primary targets of his criticisms were investment banks and brokerages, CNBC reported.

Buffett said, “Wall Street makes money, one way or another, catching the crumbs that fall off the table of capitalism. They don’t make money unless people do things, and they get a piece of them. They make a lot more money when people are gambling than when they are investing.”

Buffett suggested that American companies have become “poker chips” for market speculation citing the drastic increase of call options since brokers make more money from using them instead of simple investing strategies.

He also suggested that the current situation could cause market dislocations that ultimately benefit Berkshire Hathaway by giving them new opportunities. Buffett indicated that his company unleashed its cash hoard and spent $41 billion on stocks in the first quarter of 2022.

“Markets do crazy things, and occasionally Berkshire gets a chance to do something,” Buffett said.

Charlie Munger, Buffett’s 98-year-old long-time partner and Berkshire Hathaway vice chairman, said, “It’s almost a mania of speculation.”

Munger continued, “We have people who know nothing about stocks being advised by stockbrokers who know even less. It’s an incredible, crazy situation. I don’t think any wise country would want this outcome. Why would you want your country’s stock to trade on a casino?”

The two executives took aim at the apparent abundance of retail traders, many of whom journeyed into the stock market for the first time during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic boosting prices in their wake. Their spending frenzy was marked by meme-inspired spending trends from Reddit and other online message boards.

However, it appears that the beginner’s luck of these investors has run out as the stock market is currently putting many in the red with a considerable downturn. So far in 2022, the Nasdaq Composite index is down 21%, the S&P 500 shrank by 13%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has fallen by more than 9%.

Buffett has a long record of disparaging investment bankers and their institutions, suggesting that they encourage mergers and spinoffs to “reap fees” instead of prioritizing the improvement of companies.

Buffett also noted that his company would always be cash-rich and would be “better than the banks” at extending lines of credit to companies during periods of economic distress.

American diplomats meet with Zelenskyy, agree to send hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to Ukraine

The U.S. agreed to provide the Ukrainian government with millions of dollars in military aid following a secretive meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and top U.S. diplomats on Sunday.

The New York Post reported that the diplomats announced President Joe Biden’s plans to nominate Bridget Brink as the American ambassador to Ukraine and that American diplomats will return to Ukraine this week after evacuating the country before the Russian invasion began.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Zelenskyy and told him that the U.S. would provide his country with more than $300 million in military financing. The American diplomats also approved a $165 million sale of ammunition not made in the U.S. that will be compatible with Ukraine’s Soviet-era weapons.

The U.S. will be providing a total of $713 million for foreign military financing for Ukraine and 15 allied and partner countries. Of this money, $322 million will go to Ukraine.

The rest of the money will be split between NATO member nations and other countries that have provided military supplies to Ukraine during the Russian invasion.

With this latest aid package, the U.S. government has provided Ukraine with $3.7 billion in assistance since the beginning of the war.

This past Thursday, Biden pledged to give an additional $800 million in military aid to Ukraine, including heavy artillery and drones.

As part of the $13.6 billion spending package approved by Congress last month to provide aid and relief to Ukraine and the country’s allies, the American legislative branch committed to spending a total of $6.5 billion in military assistance to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy has made repeated pleas for military assistance from the U.S. since the Russian invasion began.

Before meeting with Blinken and Austin, Zelenskyy said, “We will talk about the list of weapons that we need and the pace of its supply. In recent weeks, the pace, the number has all improved. I’m grateful for that.”

Sunday’s meeting was kept very secret, as American officials refused to confirm that Zelenskyy and the American diplomats would be meeting even after the Ukrainian president announced the summit the day before.

Journalists who traveled with the American diplomatic contingent were not permitted to cross the border into Ukraine or disclose the location of the meeting. They were also barred from reporting on the trip until after it had concluded.

Blinken currently plans to return to Washington from Poland, while Austin is planning to meet with NATO leaders in Germany.

Veganism wanes in significance as Americans are eating more meat than five years ago

Despite popular culture pushing meat alternatives and legacy media insisting that Americans are “consuming less red meat,” Americans are eating more beef today than five years ago.

Americans are refusing to ditch red meat in defiance of fad diets and plant-based meat substitutes like the Impossible and Beyond lines of burgers taking over space on restaurant menus.

The New York Post reported that the average American consumed 58.6 pounds of red meat in 2021. In 2017, Americans recorded an all-time low by consuming an average of 54 pounds of red meat that year.

Americans are eating roughly five more pounds of red meat than five years ago.

The New York Post suggested that veganism is a fad that might be on the way out. The Post said that New York City’s exclusive dining scene has even pulled the plug on restaurant projects featuring meatless menus.

The Post said, “The owners of a new skyscraper, 425 Park Avenue, pulled the plug on a planned new restaurant there by EMP chef/owner Daniel Humm because he insisted on an all-vegan menu.”

Humm also “got the boot” from the Claridge’s hotel in London over the same issue.

The Post also suggested that figures in popular culture continually insisting that a meatless diet is the future is an example of them being “hilariously out of touch with the masses.”

“The media-propelled notion that Americans have turned from red meat to fake meat is a case of Park Slope talking to Park Slope — elites hilariously out of touch with the masses,” the Post said.

The New York Times recently suggested that Americans were increasingly moving towards meatless diets by citing a 2019 Gallup poll indicating that one-quarter of its respondents ate less meat. The Times said that respondents to the poll primarily did so “for health reasons.”

The Post, however, insisted that “Big Apple steakhouses are thriving and adding locations” and that the “ban-the-beef movement is part of a ban-anything-that-tastes-good mindset that holds sway in woker-than-thou circles.”

Outside of New York City’s exclusive dining scene, people might simply be eating more beef than faux beef for economic reasons.

Buying beef — at $5.99 a pound — to feed a family of four or five is more affordable than buying Impossible Burger meat substitute packages for nearly $8 — before sales tax — per pound.

Contrary to the popular cultural narrative, for the time being, at least, the working man eats steak while the rich man eats planted-based steak substitute.

Oklahoma will now prosecute abortionists performing non-medically necessary abortions

On Tuesday, Oklahoma’s Republican Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill into law that bans abortion in nearly all cases.

The legislation, SB612, which passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives last week and the Oklahoma Senate last year, makes performing an abortion a felony.

NBC News reported Stitt signing the bill into law as “part of an aggressive push in Republican-led states across the country to scale back abortion rights.”

The Oklahoma House voted to pass the bill 70-14, and it passed in the Senate 38-9.

Any individual convicted for carrying out or attempting to carry out an abortion would face up to 10 years in prison and up to a $100,000 fine.

At the time, Republican State Rep. Jim Olsen noted that the legislation is focused on punishing medical professionals who perform abortions and not the women who receive them.

He said, “The penalties are for the doctor, not for the woman.”

The bill specifically states that it does not “authorize the charging or conviction of a woman with any criminal offense in the death of her own unborn child.”

However, Olsen noted that the legislation would allow doctors to perform abortive procedures should it be necessary to save the life of an expectant mother.

“Obviously, I’m thrilled because we have the potential of seeing many lives of babies saved — part of that depends on future court rulings.”

Gov. Stitt announced via Twitter that he would sign SB612 into law.

He said, “I intend to make Oklahoma the most-pro life state in the country.”

Stitt said, “As Governor, I promised to sign every piece of pro-life legislation that hit my desk. Today I kept that promise by signing SB612 into law, once again showing the world that Oklahoma is the most pro-life state in the country.”

Pro-abortion political figures were quick to reprimand Oklahoma for the steps it took to protect life.

California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom criticized Oklahoma for protecting the life of an unborn child who was conceived in rape and inaccurately said that the law makes it so that “doctors performing reproductive care should be bounty-hunted.”

Molly Jong-Fast, a leftist author at the Atlantic, lamented that SB612 marks an end to easy abortion access. She said, “This is not a drill. This is the end of Roe [v. Wade].”

Planned Parenthood Action — a political advocacy group affiliated with the country’s largest abortion provider — referred to pro-life members of the Oklahoma legislature as “extremist politicians” who are “willing to turn their own constituents into medical refugees.”
