'This is a tragic day': Alec Baldwin blames 'cancel culture' for Cuomo resignation and faces online backlash

Left-wing actor Alec Baldwin responded to the resignation of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) by blaming "cancel culture," and he faced an onslaught of online backlash over his comments.

Cuomo announced on Tuesday that he would be resigning as governor over numerous allegations of sexual harassment after it appeared that he was heading towards impeachment by the Democrat-controlled New York state legislature.

Baldwin chimed in with a tweet from his official social media account.

"Regardless of what you think of Cuomo, this is a tragic day," Baldwin tweeted.

"Party politics in this country draw ambitious but ultimately isolated, even socially maladjusted men and women who, given the current cancel culture, will likely have their shortcomings exposed and magnified," he added.

Baldwin's tweet was not very popular online where he faced a fierce backlash.

"That is the wrong call," said consultant Tomi Ahonen. "You now expose yourself as another white old male sexist bastard. That fame and popularity you built mocking Trump loses all the effect Wrong call, Alec. We are very disappointed in you. How can you be this much of an a**hole?"

"Alec Baldwin is so scared of cancel culture that he called Cuomo's resignation tragic … baby what are you so afraid of?" replied another critic.

"Really, Alec? How the hell is this party politics? Cuomo abused his power with women. Time's up, dude," responded entertainment editor Carissa Pavlica.

"Mr. Baldwin is a hack. Had this happened to a Republican, he would be shouting for his resignation. But for Cuomo? No. Excuses and ignoring victims. Wrong is wrong regardless of party," replied another critic.

"I guess Alec doesn't have any sympathy for the 11 women and the 74K pieces of evidence reviewed against Cuomo, eh? What a sick statement by the actor," said another.

He was also upbraided for his comments by the entertainment reporter at the Daily Beast.

Baldwin has been outspoken about his support for left-wing causes and politicians in the past. He was especially acidic in his satiric portrayal of former President Donald Trump for Saturday Night Live.

BREAKING: NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo announces resignation

Embattled Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday he is resigning from his post as the Empire State's top elected official after the state attorney general's report found he sexually harassed multiple women.

This is a breaking news story. Check back for updates.

Gov. Cuomo trying to cut a deal to avoid impeachment: report

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has repeatedly rejected the growing chorus of demands from the people of the Empire State that he resign his post following the state attorney general's report detailing his unlawful sexual harassment of multiple women.

He has defied calls from leaders in his own party, including President Joe Biden himself, to get out of the Executive Mansion before things get worse, as he continues to deny the attorney general's allegations.

Now things are getting worse — and the Love Gov is working to strike a deal with state lawmakers to avoid getting booted from office, the New York Post reported Monday.

What's Cuomo doing now?

Defiant Gov. Cuomo has made a "last-ditch" attempt to keep his job as the state Assembly finalizes its impeachment plans following Attorney General Letitia James' damning conclusion following months of investigation into alleged sexual harassment by the governor.

According to the Post, Cuomo worked to "cut a deal" with the legislature, saying he would forget about his bid for a fourth term in exchange for not being impeached. And apparently, he was even quietly pushing the notion even before James released her report.

But Democratic officials and party leaders aren't biting.

"It was something that was floated to me by the folks in the Cuomo camp as a possible option before the attorney general's report came out," state Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs told the paper.

"I never saw it as a viable option," Jacobs added — and he claims he said so to the governor's staff.

"I shot it down pretty quick," he said. "Either you can survive the AG's report and run again or you don't survive the AG's report. There's no compromise."

According to the Post, Team Cuomo has not given up on pursuing the deal.

One source told The City that the governor's people are still calling around trying to save his skin, but no one is taking them up on the offer.

What are Cuomo's pals saying?

But one Cuomo ally says the reports are not true.

Charlie King, a longtime friend of the governor who was allegedly one of the people making calls in an attempt to make a bargain, said the rumors of a proposed deal are untrue.

According to King, Cuomo wasn't going to run for another term anyway, so the gesture would have been meaningless.

"No," King said about the proposed deal. "He's not running for a fourth term, period."

However, that would likely come as a surprise to many Cuomo donors. As recently as late last month, they were putting money into Cuomo re-election coffers, WPIX-TV reported July 28.

Steve Cohen, a former federal prosecutor and longtime Cuomo adviser, told the governor it's time to call it quits, the Post reported.

Another top adviser, Larry Schwartz, has reportedly urged Cuomo to step down, a source told the Post.

And onetime Cuomo campaign chairman Bill Mulrow "personally appealed to the governor to resign," the paper reported.

"You don't need this," Mulrow told Cuomo.

Democratic fundraising platform dumps Gov. Cuomo amidst sexual harassment scandal

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was dealt another damaging blow after a major Democratic fundraising platform booted him on Thursday.

The scandal-plagued governor has faced a growing chorus of calls for his resignation since New York state Attorney General Leticia James released her damaging report Tuesday confirming sexual harassment claims.

As of Thursday afternoon, ActBlue removed pages from their website meant to raise funds for Cuomo's election campaign and his political action committee.

"You have attempted to make a contribution to a fundraising page that has no active recipients," read an error message according to Axios. "Either the page's owner has removed all committees or organizations from the page, or we have concluded processing contributions for these committees or organizations."

ActBlue also confirmed in an email to Axios that they would no longer be collecting donations for Cuomo.

Cuomo vehemently denied the allegations in a pre-recorded video where he apologized for causing discomfort among some female accusers but flat out rejected other allegations.

"The facts are much different than what has been portrayed," Cuomo said.

"I want you to know directly from me that I never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances," he added. "That is just not who I am. And that is not who I have ever been."

The New York legislature is expected to begin impeachment proceedings against Cuomo after members of his own party said he was not fit to serve in his political office any longer. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and President Joe Biden have all called for him to resign.

New York state Assemblyman Phil Steck, a Democrat, told CNN that the Judiciary Committee would likely recommend impeachment to the Assembly, and may even add other charges in addition to the numerous sexual harassment allegations.

"Assuming that the committee's investigation is very similar to the findings of the attorney general, it would be hard to imagine that sexual harassment would not be a basis for impeaching this governor," said Steck.

President Biden calls on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign after damning report from NY state attorney general

President Joe Biden (D) called on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign after the New York state attorney general found the sexual harassment allegations against him to be credible.

Biden made the comments to reporters during a media briefing on Tuesday. He was asked by CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins if he stood by a previous statement about the investigation into the claims.

"Back in March you said that if the investigation confirms the allegations against Gov. Cuomo, he should resign, so will you now call on him to resign, given the investigators said the 11 women were credible?" asked Collins.

"I stand by that statement," responded Biden.

"Are you now calling on him to resign?" she asked.

"Yes," Biden said.

However, the president would not say if Cuomo should be impeached by the New York legislature.

"And if he doesn't resign, do you believe he should be impeached and removed from office?" asked Collins.

"Let's take one thing at a time," Biden responded. "He should resign. I understand that the state legislature may decide to impeach. I don't know that for a fact, I have not read all that data."

Cuomo forcefully denied the allegations after state Attorney General Letitia James announced the findings by her office on Tuesday.

"The independent investigation has concluded that Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women and in doing so violated federal and state law," said James.

"Specifically, the investigation found that Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed current and former New York State employees by engaging in unwelcome and nonconsensual touching and making numerous offensive comments of a suggestive and sexual nature that created a hostile work environment for women," she added.

In a pre-recorded video released to the media, Cuomo accused his detractors of a politically motivated attack.

"The facts are much different than what has been portrayed," Cuomo claimed in the video.

"I want you to know directly from me that I never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances," he continued. "That is just not who I am. And that is not who I have ever been."

Cuomo is facing many calls to resign from political leaders in his own party over the sexual harassment scandal, and some say they will support a motion to impeach him if he continues to refuse to resign.
