Former teacher, 26, accused of having sex with 16-year-old male student

A former teacher in Michigan is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old male student, WDIV-TV reported.

Jocelyn Sanroman, 26, of Pontiac is accused of having a sexual relationship with the teen in 2023 while she taught at Oakside Prep Academy in Waterford Township, WDIV added. Waterford Township is about 40 minutes northwest of Detroit.

'This defendant is accused of using her position of authority to exploit a minor victim.'

Sanroman confided in a fellow teacher that she was having sex with a student, and that teacher in turn told police, the station said, citing prosecutors.

Sanroman was arraigned Monday on three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, WJBK-TV reported.

If convicted, she faces up to 15 years in prison, WDIV said.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday told Blaze News that Sanroman turned herself in Monday. Jail records indicate she was booked Monday morning and released Monday afternoon. The sheriff's office added to Blaze News that while Sanroman didn't post bond, she's responsible for a $20,000 personal bond if she doesn't appear at her July 10 probable cause conference.

"Any time any member of the school staff, teacher, coach, is trying to develop a relationship with you, it doesn’t matter who initiates it; it’s a crime," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald told WJBK in a separate story.

McDonald added to WJBK that while a 16-year-old can consent, it's different when the other party is a teacher.

The prosecutor noted to WJBK that she also was a teacher when she was the suspect's age, "but I'm also a parent."

"School is supposed to be someplace where your kids feel safe," McDonald added to WJBK.

“This defendant is accused of using her position of authority to exploit a minor victim,” McDonald noted to WDIV. “These allegations represent the ultimate breach of trust placed in educators by parents and the community. As a former teacher myself, I applaud the teacher who contacted police about this situation, protecting other students from further exploitation.”

A news crew from WJBK paid a visit to the former teacher's home but said no one was there.

An Oakside Prep Academy spokesperson told WJBK that school officials "acted immediately after learning about these allegations." The spokesperson added to WJBK that "these are troubling allegations that are unsettling to everyone in our school community" and that students' "safety and well-being remains our top priority."

News of this latest teacher-student sex scandal comes on the heels of a headline-grabbing case out of New York state where a 22-year-old now-former school district employee is accused of sending nude photos of herself to a 14-year-old boy.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office last month said Anamaria Milazzo from the town of Elmira was arrested on charges of disseminating indecent material to minors in the second degree — a class E felony — and endangering the welfare of a child, which is a class A misdemeanor.

The Daily Voice said Milazzo was arrested June 16 and that she had worked as a teaching assistant since December 2024. Milazzo was issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Wellsburg Village Court at a later date, the sheriff's office said.

The school district in question — the Greater Southern Tier Board of Cooperative Educational Services — noted in a statement provided to WETM-TV last week that Milazzo "was put on leave as soon as we were first made aware of the allegations by law enforcement and has not been present at BOCES since that time. She has resigned and will not be returning to campus."

Mother who officials say abandoned her 3 young children to live alone in squalor for years is charged, may get life in prison

A Michigan mother who authorities said abandoned her three young children to live alone in squalor — reportedly for almost five years — could receive life in prison.

Kelli Marie Bryant, 34, was charged with three counts of first-degree child abuse. Each charge carries a maximum jail time of life in prison, WJBK-TV reported.

'Morally, there is plenty of responsibility to go around for how this was allowed to happen.'

Prosecutors also intend to file a petition removing Bryant's parental rights, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said, adding that Bryant has been held in jail and was expected to be arraigned Thursday.

Deputies were called Friday to the house in the 600 block of Lydia Lane in Pontiac for a welfare check, authorities said.

The landlord contacted authorities after not hearing from the mother since December, figuring something must have happened, the sheriff's office said, adding that the rent hadn't been paid since October.

Deputies found three siblings — a 15-year-old boy and two girls, ages 13 and 12 — living in squalor, the sheriff's office said.

Garbage was piled as high as four feet in some rooms, authorities said, adding that mold and human waste were found throughout the home. What's more, a toilet was found overflowing, and feces were found in a bathtub, authorities said, adding that the scene was processed by an evidence technician dressed in a hazmat suit.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said Bryant lived in the home with four children in 2019 and moved out with one in 2020, according to WJBK, which added that Bryant left behind the other children to live by themselves for almost five years.

In an earlier story, WJBK said the children would have been just 11, 9, and 8 when they started living alone.

They survived on food their mother or a stranger left on the porch each week, authorities said, adding that the mother didn't leave toilet paper or personal hygiene items. The sheriff's office said the children had not attended school since the abandonment, and they passed time watching TV or playing games. The boy slept on a mattress on the floor while the girls slept on pizza boxes, the sheriff's office said.

"Morally, there is plenty of responsibility to go around for how this was allowed to happen. However, these three kids were entrusted to the care of their mother, Kelli Bryant," McDonald said, according to the station. "And the evidence suggests that she effectively abandoned them to a revolting pit of refuse and squalor."

'All three children expressed fear about what their mother's response would be if they left the home.'

McDonald said the child Bryant took with her ended up living with the children's father, WJBK reported.

When deputies first entered the home, the three children hid in separate rooms and were afraid to come out initially, the station said. Once the children emerged, deputies said they were overstimulated just by being outdoors, WJBK said. Since their mother left, the two girls never left the home once, WJBK said, adding that the boy left only to touch grass and check the mail.

The children were taken to a hospital for evaluation, authorities said, adding their clothing was soiled and their hair matted. Their toenails were several inches long, which made it difficult for them to walk, the sheriff's office said.

"At the hospital, the children struggled with completing basic hygiene tasks like flushing a toilet and brushing their teeth because they had not done it in years," McDonald said, according to the station.

McDonald added to WJBK that the children were too scared to leave the house: "The defendant instructed the kids that they were not to answer the door or leave the house. All three children expressed fear about what their mother's response would be if they left the home."

The station added that McDonald said that "it was unbelievable what they were living with for years. Unbelievable. It wouldn't be, surroundings where you would want any living creature or animal or particularly human beings. I mean, these kids, not to have even basic hygiene tools. And I guess what stands out the most for me is no, no, love."

The children are now with a relative who McDonald said didn't know what they were going through, WJBK said.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman Pleads Guilty To Pulling Fire Alarm In Capitol Building

The district attorney charged Bowman with a misdemeanor

Former President Trump arraigned, pleads not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records

Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsification of business records Tuesday afternoon at the Manhattan Criminal Court building.

A somber-faced President Trump said nothing as he entered the courtroom.

Throngs of onlookers, politicians, and members of the media lined Manhattan streets ahead of the historic proceeding.

Trump signaled a few hours ahead of the trial that his team would likely call for a change of venue and for the judge’s recusal.

In a post to Truth Social around 10:00 a.m., Trump called the venue “very unfair,” adding that some areas “voted 1% Republican.” Trump proposed Staten Island as a more “fair and secure” location for the trial.

In the same post, Trump called the judge at his then-upcoming arraignment “highly partisan” and added that he and his family were “Trump haters.” He also mentioned that the judge declined to recuse himself in a former Trump-related case. In addition, he said that the judge’s daughter worked for Vice President Kamala Harris and now works for the Biden-Harris campaign.

“Kangaroo Court,” Trump wrote.

Trump appeared before New York Justice Juan Merchan Tuesday afternoon, alongside his legal team.

Justice Merchan, who oversaw the grand jury that delivered Trump’s indictment, also presided over two unrelated tax fraud cases involving Trump. Neither case resulted in a favorable outcome for the former president, Politico reported Monday.

Though Trump says Merchan was “hand picked” by District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the prosecutors, a New York court official told Politico that judges are randomly assigned to oversee grand juries. A judge who oversees a grand jury that produces an indictment then serves as judge for the trial in that case.

Michael Isikoff, chief investigative correspondent for Yahoo News, reported some details on the charges Monday night, while the indictment was still under seal.

Trump called for Bragg’s indictment in a post on Truth Social Monday night, accusing him of illegally leaking the details of the indictment to the reporter.

“D.A. BRAGG JUST ILLEGALLY LEAKED THE 33 points of Indictment. There are no changes or surprises from those he leaked days ago directly out of the Grand Jury. No Crime by Trump. What a MESS. Bragg should resign, NOW!” Trump wrote on the social media platform.

Later Monday evening, also on Truth Social, Trump accused special prosecutor Jack Smith of leaking information to the Washington Post. In the post, Trump called Smith a “radical left lunatic” and a “totally biased thug.”

Smith is investigating Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents in a separate case. Monday night, ABC News reported that Smith has subpoenaed multiple U.S. Secret Service agents connected with Trump’s security detail.

Trump will be delivering a speech at Mar-a-Lago Monday night, according to an announcement from his campaign.
