NBA warns Ja Morant about using 'finger gun' celebration due to past suspensions over guns — he immediately does it again

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant immediately ignored a league warning about his celebrations despite receiving massive suspensions over his actions in the past.

It all started when Morant was suspended eight games without pay after being shown with a firearm in a club during an Instagram live video in March 2023.

In June 2023, Morant was suspended for 25 games for wielding a gun once again on social media.

Morant played for just three weeks following his suspension before bowing out of the 2023-2024 season for shoulder surgery.

Fast-forward to the 2024-2025 season, when Morant started off April by making a blatant rifle-aiming gesture toward the Golden State Warriors bench during a game. It should be noted that gun or rifle gestures are extremely common in sports and are often used by players to denote being a sharpshooter in the sense of being a point producer or goal scorer.

The next day, an ESPN reporter revealed the NBA was "looking into" Morant for his finger gun motions.

Morant took to his X page that day and simply said "ja this ... ja that," before he added, "God bless yall" a minute later.

On April 3, it was revealed the NBA had issued an official warning, but no penalties, to both Morant and Buddy Hield of the Warriors.

The league was cited as having generously ruled that the celebrations were not intended to be violent in nature but were still found to be inappropriate. The NBA also reportedly asked the players to refrain from doing the motions in the future.

Morant waited mere hours to mock the league's warning and immediately did the celebration that same night against the Miami Heat.

Less than five minutes into the first quarter, Morant made a three-pointer and performed the celebration again, but it did not appear to be directed at anyone in particular, as he did not make the gun motion toward team benches. Morant finished the game with 30 points.

It is unclear what will happen to the 25-year-old, if anything at all. According to the New York Times, the NBA does not have a rule against specific gestures of this nature.

However, it has suspended or given fouls to players for unsportsmanlike conduct for the same or similar moves. In 2017, the New York Times noted that Josh Jackson was fined for $35,000 for a motion that looked like he was pulling a trigger. In 2015, Gerald Green was similarly fined $25,000.

The NFL, on the other hand, recently listed finger guns as a "violent gesture" ahead of the 2025 season, a ruling that has also affected that league's top stars. Three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes received a fine for finger guns after a touchdown last season.

Father of fatally stabbed HS star athlete says suspect got mad after being told he was in wrong place, being asked to move

The grieving father of a 17-year-old high school star athlete who was stabbed to death at a Wednesday morning track meet in Frisco, Texas, said his son's killer got angry after being told he was in the wrong place and being asked to move.

"I'm not trying to judge, but what kind of parents did this child have? What was he taught? He brought a knife to a track meet, and he murdered my son by stabbing him in the heart. The guy was in the wrong place, and they asked him to move, and he bowed up. This is murder," Jeff Metcalf told KXAS-TV in the aftermath. "You know what, I already forgive this person. Already. God takes care of things. God is going to take care of me. God is going to take care of my family."

'I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital.'

Frisco police told KXAS they arrested and charged 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony with the murder of Austin Metcalf. Police added to the station that Anthony's bond hadn't been set, and it's unclear if he's obtained an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Police told KXAS they were called to Kuykendall Stadium around 10 a.m. after a 17-year-old stabbed a 17-year-old during a confrontation. Despite lifesaving measures by police and fire personnel — including CPR and the administration of blood — Austin Metcalf died, the station said.

Jeff Metcalf told KXAS his son didn't know the student who attacked him and that Austin's identical twin brother, Hunter, not only saw the stabbing but also tried to stop the bleeding. You can view KXAS's video report here.

"I tried to whip around as fast as I could," a teary-eyed Hunter told WFAA-TV. "I looked at my brother, and I'm not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him." You can view WFAA's video report here.

Hunter told WFAA he held his brother until first responders started attempting resuscitation.

Jeff Metcalf added to KXAS that Hunter "was holding on to [Austin], trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother's arms. I rushed up there, and I saw him on the gurney, and I could tell — they said he wasn't breathing. I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital. And we prayed, and it's God's plan, I don't understand it, but they weren't able to save him. This is murder."

Hunter — who's just a few minutes younger than Austin — added to WFAA: "I always looked up to him. He was a big brother even though we're the same age."

Hunter added to WFAA that Austin was a peacemaker and that all his friends loved him.

Austin was a junior at Memorial High School in Frisco, was voted MVP of the football team, and ran track, the Dallas News said. Jeff Metcalf noted to KXAS that Austin also had a 4.0 grade-point average and had big plans for the future: "He was loved by many. He was a leader."

The Metcalf family started a GoFundMe to help cover costs for Austin's funeral and to help Hunter with counseling and school, KXAS said.

As for the suspect, WFAA said Anthony played football in the secondary for Centennial High School and indicated on social media pages that he'd been offered scholarships to play football for several smaller schools.

A Frisco ISD spokesperson said that moments after the stabbing, the stadium was immediately secured, the meet was suspended, and all students were returned to their home campuses "with expediency," KXAS reported, adding that more than 100 students from eight schools were taking part in the 11-5A championship district track meet.

Frisco police said that anyone with information about what happened at the track meet should call the police department's emergency line at 972-292-6010 or submit a tip using Tip411 by texting the message FRISCOPD and the tip to 847411.

Trump signs executive order preventing men from competing in women's sports: 'It's about time'

Gender ideology — with core claims that have not only been debunked but in many cases rejected by the majority of Americans — is on the ropes. President Donald Trump appears committed to delivering the knockout punch.

The 47th president, who promised in 2023 to bring an end to "left-wing gender insanity" upon taking office, signed an executive order Wednesday afternoon banning male transvestites from competing in girls' or women's sports.

"It's about time," said Trump. "Under the Trump administration, we will defend the proud tradition of female athletes, and we will not allow men to beat up, injure, and cheat our women and our girls."

Trump noted that "men claiming to be girls have stolen more than 3,500 victories" and have "invaded more than 11,000 competitions designed for women."

Trump also indicated that he has instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to make clear to the International Olympic Committee that America will no longer tolerate men in women's sports at home or abroad.

"From now on, women's sports will be only for women," added the president.

While LGBT activists and other radicals are incensed over the decision, Trump's order reflects the desire of the supermajority of Americans. A 2023 Gallup survey found that 69% of Americans wanted transvestites to play only on sports teams that corresponded with their actual sex.

'This commonsense action from President Trump ends the disgusting betrayal of women and girls by the previous administration.'

Dozens of states have already passed legislation banning transvestites from participating in sporting events intended for members of the opposite sex. Now, there's a strong likelihood the rest of the nation will fall in line.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated earlier in the day that the purpose of the order was to "defend the safety of athletes, protect competitive integrity, and uphold the promise of Title IX."

"This commonsense action from President Trump ends the disgusting betrayal of women and girls by the previous administration, who for years catered to radical activists who wanted biological males to be treated as women in workplace showers, competitive sports, prisons, and even rape shelters," continued Leavitt. "Gender ideology insanity is over."

The order is aligned with the Trump Department of Education's announcement last month, which promised a reversion to the first Trump administration's Title IX rule, enforcing protections on the basis of biological sex, not on the basis of so-called "gender identity."

"The Biden administration's failed attempt to rewrite Title IX was an unlawful abuse of regulatory power and an egregious slight to women and girls," said acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor. "Under the Trump administration, the Education Department will champion equal opportunity for all Americans, including women and girls, by protecting their right to safe and separate facilities and activities in schools, colleges, and universities."

Terry Schilling, the president of the American Principles Project who was present for the signing ceremony Wednesday, told Blaze News that he spent the past six years "speaking with anyone and everyone to save America from this gender insanity," adding that his organization shelled out $1 million on polling and testing with regard to "transgender issues, including women's sports," and $18 million hammering Democrats on their support for gender ideology.

'This is a victory for every girl who has fought for fairness.'

"I got a chance to meet with President Trump last summer, and I shared with him our voter impact study from previous elections showing that women's sports and protecting kids from gender insanity moved tens of thousands of voters in Arizona and Wisconsin," said Schilling. "Opposing gender insanity is one of the few areas in politics where you don't have to choose between good public policy and good politics."

"President Trump won on this issue and is keeping his promises from the campaign trail," continued Schilling. "What a welcome change in political leadership!"

Kaitlynn Wheeler — a member of the women's swim team who with All-American swim star Riley Gaines not only had to compete with the cross-dresser formerly known as William Thomas but found herself sharing a locker room with him — was also present for the signing, which coincided with the 39th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Wheeler noted in advance on X, "This is a victory for every girl who has fought for fairness, every woman who refused to be silenced, & every future athlete who deserves a level playing field."

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who has worked diligently to keep cross-dressers and predatory men out of women's facilities at the U.S. Capitol, tweeted that "this executive order restores fairness, upholds Title IX's original intent, and defends the rights of female athletes who have worked their whole lives to compete at the highest levels."

"No amount of activism, corporate pressure, or lies can erase reality — men are biologically different from women," added Mace.

The decision to keep opportunistic men from competing against female athletes, over whom they enjoy scientifically documented physical advantages, comes just one week after Trump made good on another campaign promise to ban the "chemical castration and medical mutilation of innocent children."

The previous week, Trump signed an order both prohibiting the use of federal funds to promote gender ideology and underscoring that sex is unchangeable and "grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality."
