Vigilantes reportedly beat up male accused of trying to rape elderly woman; cops told they could find suspect in hospital

Vigilantes beat up a male accused of trying to rape an elderly woman in the Bronx last week — and an anonymous caller helped out police, telling them they could find the suspect in the hospital, WNBC-TV reported.

The NYPD released video of the man in question, who's seen wearing no pants just after he allegedly attempted to rape a 70-year-old woman near Creston Avenue and 184th Street around 12 p.m. Friday, the station said.

'Yeah, we beat him up. ... And if he comes back, I’m going to rock him again.'

Police told WNBC that the vigilantes found the suspect less than 24 hours later, as word of the attack against the woman quickly through the New York City borough.

Law enforcement sources also told the station that an anonymous caller told police that residents detained the suspect and delivered a vigilante beatdown against him near Tiebout Avenue and 187th Street. The caller concluded by saying that detectives could find the suspect in the hospital, WNBC reported.

The New York Post, citing police and residents, identified the suspect as 50-year-old Oswaldo Ramos — a "career criminal with 19 previous arrests."

The NYPD said Ramos, who lives near the crime scene, was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted rape and burglary, the Post reported, adding that he hadn't been arraigned as of Tuesday afternoon. Law-enforcement sources said he was still in St. Barnabas Hospital, and the details about his injuries were unclear.

The paper added that an unnamed vigilante resident said Tuesday that he'd repeat the beatdown: “Yeah, we beat him up. ... You don’t do that. That’s something you don’t do. ... And if he comes back, I’m going to rock him again.”

A 59-year-old man who also didn't want to be identified confirmed the thumping of the suspect to the Post: “We don’t tolerate that kind of stuff around here. You won’t see any video on it. No cameras.”

"He deserved what he got," Stenller Contreras told WNBC, adding that the catch-and-release system is wearing thin on the neighborhood.

“I would have done the same thing because that could have been my grandmother. It could have been anybody," Contreras also told the station. "I would have done the same thing."

Police sources added to WNBC that the suspect has not been cooperative in telling detectives the identities of the men who beat him up.

More from the Post:

Ramos was last arrested Oct. 6, 2018, for allegedly robbing a Bronx deli while claiming that he’d just shot a cop, police said.

He allegedly barged into the shop on East 178th Street near Mapes Avenue, flashed the butt of a black handgun, and sneered, “Give me the money. I just shot a cop. I’ll be back tomorrow for more money.”

He had not shot a cop, police sources said.

The disposition of that case was not immediately known.

Most of Ramos’ prior arrests have been for robberies and burglaries, according to authorities.

Video: Shoppers take matters into their own hands when man allegedly tries to rape woman in Walmart aisle

Shoppers at a Miami-area Walmart reportedly stopped an attempted rape on Sunday — and the incident was caught on camera.

What happened?

Police say a woman was shopping in a northwest Miami Walmart Sunday evening when 28-year-old Bredan Jarmal Harvey approached her from behind, pulled up her dress, and began grabbing her.

When the woman turned around, Harvey allegedly pushed her to the ground and "ripped off her underwear while grabbing her thighs and vagina" in the middle of the aisle, according to the arrest report. The victim screamed for help as she endured the assault.

Fortunately, nearby shoppers acted quickly, removing Harvey from the victim and subduing him until police arrived on scene and arrested him.

The aftermath of the shocking incident was captured on cellphone video.

Police charged Harvey with attempted sexual battery, and he is being held on $50,000 bond, according to WTJV-TV.

Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta told WTJV that investigators believe Sunday's incident is not the first time Harvey attacked a woman, given the brazen nature of the attack.

"It wasn't somewhere isolated. He didn't care it was in the wide open," Zabaleta said. "Because he was so brazen, investigators feel perhaps he may have done this before, and there may be more victims."

According to Miami-Dade County Court records, Harvey was out on felony bond at the time of the assault for crimes that allegedly occurred one week before the Walmart attack. He was also on probation for a previous disorderly conduct conviction, Law & Crime noted.

Anything else?

Walmart released a statement expressing gratitude for the Good Samaritans who stepped in to stop the attack.

"The safety of our associates and customers is among our top priorities," the company said. "We’re very disturbed to see something like this in our store and are grateful to those who intervened to stop the alleged attack and detain this man until police arrived. All other questions should be sent to local law enforcement."

A naked man authorities located on a bicycle near a school was arrested for attempted rape of a minor and assault with a deadly weapon, according to a news release from the Corona Police Department.

The 41-year-old man, who had previously been clad in women's clothing, had approached a 12-year-old girl who was heading to school, pushed her to the ground with his bike, and exposed himself while making sexual references, according to the police.

The girl was able to get away from the suspect by fleeing to a nearby school bus.

The suspect's bail has been placed at $50,000.

An officer was initially alerted about the nude biker by a citizen.

The news out of California comes as an alleged assault against a 15-year-old girl in Loudoun County, Virginia, has recently received attention. A father named Scott Smith has alleged that a boy wearing a skirt went into a girls restroom at a high school in Virginia and assaulted his daughter earlier this year.

As TheBlaze previously noted, The Daily Wire has reported that although juvenile court records are sealed, Smith's attorney said that a boy at Stone Bridge High School got charged with two counts of forcible sodomy, a single count of anal sodomy, as well as a count of forcible fellatio in connection with an episode on May 28, when the father says his daughter was assaulted in a school restroom.
