Democrat Beto O'Rourke is big mad that President Joe Biden's administration has authorized the construction of new sections of border wall.
A notice posted to the Federal Register said the Biden administration will circumvent 26 federal laws to build new sections of border wall in Texas. The new sections of wall are necessary, the notice said, because of "high illegal entry" of migrants.
The decision represents a significant departure from one of Biden's central campaign promises not to build "another foot" of border wall as president.
O'Rourke — who ran failed campaigns for the White House, U.S. Senate, and Texas governorship — had a difficult time processing the news. He lashed out at the president and made several odd claims.
First, O'Rourke claimed, "Walls don't work." Then, noting that Biden "promised he wouldn't build them," O'Rourke asserted that voters will now have a difficult time distinguishing "between him & Trump on border/immigration." And finally, O'Rourke said building the necessary stretch of border wall is a "[w]asted opportunity" for a Democratic president to exercise unilateral power.

There are several problems with O'Rourke's reaction.
First, walls do work. They only exist for a single purpose: to act as a barrier of protection. If they did not work, they would fail to carry out their central purpose, and thus probably wouldn't exist at all.
Second, it's true that Biden vowed not to build any new border wall. This reversal, therefore, demonstrates the dire situation happening at the border, where thousands of migrants continue to pour into the U.S. on a daily basis. The migrant crisis is devastating border communities, and more wall will hopefully stymie the influx of migrants.
Ironically, the more politicos like O'Rourke highlight the policy reversal, the more light they shine on the border crisis — and the need for a barrier.
Finally, it's not true that voters will now have a problem distinguishing between the border policies of Trump and Biden. That's because Biden said Thursday that he does not believe that walls work. Trump, of course, believes they do.
