DEBUNKED: The left's claims about Christopher Columbus are FALSE

On Monday, America celebrated Columbus Day. Or if you’re a virtue-signaling lefty, the country observed “Indigenous Peoples' Day.”

To those progressives, Liz Wheeler says, “You’re a loser.”

Columbus Day “triggers the left. They think that Christopher Columbus was an evil person; they claim he's a mass murderer who engaged in genocide, slavery – all different kinds of accusations against imperialism, accusations of personal bad character – and I just want to spend today … debunking these lies,” she says.

The accusations directed toward Christopher Columbus, according to Liz, are just part of the left’s agenda to “demonize white men and America.”

Democrats want to “tear down our country, tear down our rule of law, tear down our government,” which is why they defame the white men who built our country, she says.

In regard to the left’s claims that Columbus is guilty of genocide, Liz says, “It’s a historically ignorant claim.”

“According to historians, the population of North America in 1492, the year that Columbus landed, was approximately 20 million people. Within two centuries … approximately 95% of that 20 million people were dead,” she explains.

However, the astronomical decline in population had nothing to do with Columbus. The 95% of people who died were killed “almost entirely by disease,” specifically by the smallpox virus.

As for the claims that Columbus engaged in slavery, Liz says that yes, that claim is true.

“Yes, he did [engage in slavery], and that's wrong and there's no excuse for that,” she says, adding that “almost everybody took part in slavery” in that time period, regardless of skin color.

“Doesn't make it morally right,” but it does offer an “explanation,” she says, adding that the natives the left loves to paint as victims also “warred against each other and took each other as slaves and killed each other and raped each other.”

“Doesn't make it right, but it does change the context of how the left tries to portray Christopher Columbus,” says Liz.

To hear her debunk the left’s claims that Christopher Columbus was an imperialist and a man of poor character, watch the clip above.

As Statues Topple, So Do Our Freedoms

To preserve our freedoms, our nation must stop going down this road of condemning rather than celebrating our nation’s founders.

Christopher Columbus’ Calamitous Mistakes Don’t Negate His Noble Contributions

Columbus was no genocidal sociopath; he was an ambitious, expert explorer disastrously incapable of governance, whose poor decisions had consequences he could hardly have predicted.

Why Americans Should Celebrate Columbus Day

Christopher Columbus’s perseverance and courage in his four transatlantic crossings inspired later explorers and seekers of freedom.

Iconoclasts tore down a Columbus statue in Providence, Rhode Island. The defiant mayor of its new hometown can't be happier: 'He's here.'

Christopher Columbus' four transatlantic voyages opened the way for European exploration of the Americas. While once held in high regard for his daring and ambition — such that counties, cities, and towns across the United States were named after him — in recent years, he has been subjected to routine defamation and denunciations by leftists.

As part of this ongoing anti-Western campaign, iconoclasts have sought to deface and raze various Columbus statues. The 15th-century Italian's statue in Providence, Rhode Island, was no exception. The city saw fit to tear down the monument amid the costly BLM riots in 2020.

The historic statue, which is over a century old, has since found a home in a town unembarrassed by its history.

Joseph Polisena Jr., the mayor of Johnston, Rhode Island, noted in a Sept. 26 post on X, "He's here."

"A huge thank you to all the companies that donated their time and resources to get this done," wrote Polisena. "Our Columbus Day event will be on Monday, October 9 at 11am."

What's the background?

The 6,000-pound Columbus statue had stood at Elmwood and Reservoir Avenues in Providence since 1893.

In the lead-up to the 2020 BLM riots, vandals took to splashing the statue with red paint, on at least one occasion spray-painting, "Stop celebrating genocide," reported the Associated Press.

After the statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee was torn down in Richmond, Virginia, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City announced its plan to remove a statue of President Theodore Roosevelt, and radicals tore down the statue of abolitionist Hans Christian Heg in Madison, Wisconsin — just three of the hundreds of monuments toppled nationwide — Democrats in Rhode Island figured they would similarly go farther than red paint and blood libels.

The Providence Journal reported that former Democratic Mayor Jorge Elorza announced the statue's removal in June 2020, noting that a six-member committee would subsequently help the city determine what to do with it.

Protesters chanted, "Take it down! Take it down!" as a crane removed the statue and set it down on a flatbed truck.

The historic monument was placed in storage for well over a year.

Ray Rickman, who headed the committee advising the city on what to do with the statue, said, "Columbus is not to be respected if you pay any attention," reported WJAR-TV.

Elorza made clear the statue wouldn't be returning to its former spot, saying, "It's either insulting to a certain group or it's going to get destroyed. And if it doesn’t get destroyed, it's going to take a lot of resources from the city to keep it from being destroyed, and we still can't guarantee it."

Defying the iconoclasts

Former Providence Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to Malta Joseph Paolino Jr. ultimately bought the statue for $50,000 after it had been left to gather dust, reported the Providence Journal.

Paolino understood that the statue was "a symbol of Italian culture," which he did not want to see melted down and turned into scrap metal.

Paolino subsequently reached out to see whether Johnston, a town of roughly 30,000, would take it. After all, 49.5% of Johnston's residents reportedly have Italian heritage, and its mayor had previously indicated he'd make a home for the statue.

Johnston Mayor Polisena ultimately seized upon the former mayor's offer, stressing Columbus is a "very important figure for Italian-Americans"; a historic figure who "really ushered in the modern era ... the age of discovery."

While acknowledging that nobody is perfect, Polisena said, "I don't judge people who lived 500 years ago based on modern standards. I'm sure 500 years from now, people will look back on some of the things we did and say, 'I can't believe they did that.'"

The mayor noted that the reactions to the statue have so far been positive, but that prospective critics can rest assured that no tax money was spent on the statue.

The Associated Press indicated leftists farther afield are already fuming.

Harrison Tuttle, a failed Democratic candidate for state Senate and current resident of the Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC, said, "You don't have to be Indigenous to understand the harm that Christopher Columbus inflicted. ... To see it go back up is really tone deaf to all the progress we made just three years ago."

Johnston's Columbus Day event is unlikely to be a one-off.

"I'm hoping to make it an annual event," said the mayor. "People should learn about him, the good and the bad."

Harriet Tubman monument replaces Christopher Columbus statue in New Jersey

A monument honoring abolitionist trailblazer Harriet Tubman was unveiled in Newark, New Jersey, Thursday, replacing a long-standing statue of Christopher Columbus removed in 2020 amid the civil unrest following the death of George Floyd.

"In a time when so many cities are choosing to topple statues that limit the scope of their people’s story, we have chosen to erect a monument that spurs us into our future story of exemplary strength and solidity," Newark's Mayor Ras Baraka said in a press release.

"In a country where the overwhelming majority of monuments are testaments to white males, Newark has chosen to erect a monument to a Black woman who was barely five feet tall, but had the visage and power of a giant," Baraka also said.

The new monument, designed by New Jersey native and architect Nina Cooke John, is titled "Shadow of a Face." It honors intrepid abolitionist Harriet Tubman and the city's role in the Underground Railroad.

"Shadow of a Face celebrates both the legacy of Harriet Tubman and the lives of the people living in Newark today – connecting their story to Tubman’s story through a common bond of seekers of liberty in the past and in the present," said Cooke John.

"Her heroism is recognized, and space is claimed for her story in this historic park, while her humanity is made accessible so that we can all be empowered by her deeds both great and small."

Dignitaries, politicians, and celebrities on hand for Thursday's unveiling included Queen Latifah, New Jersey's first lady Tammy Murphy, state Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz, Newark Museum of Art Director and CEO Linda C. Harrison, and Michele Jones Galvin, a descendant of Harriet Tubman.

Several photographs of "Shadow of a Face" and the unveiling ceremony are available here. Readers can also enjoy a time-lapse video of the monument's creation and interviews with significant figures involved in bringing it to fruition, provided by the city.

"Shadow of a Face" replaces a statue of Christopher Columbus that was removed by the city in June 2020. It was a gift from Newark's Italian community unveiled on Columbus Day in 1927, according to NewarkHistory.

"In keeping with the movement to remove symbols of oppression and white supremacy, we have decided to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus from Washington Park," Mayor Baraka said on the statue's removal in June 2020.

"The removal of this statue should not be perceived as an insult to the Italian-American community. It is a statement against the barbarism, enslavement, and oppression that this explorer represents," Baraka also said.

A second Christopher Columbus statue was removed from the city "by private citizens" about a week later.

Left-wing 'journalist' calls Child Protective Services on Republican Virginia state Senate candidate Tina Ramirez

Leftist David Leavitt called a hotline on Monday in an attempt to report Republican Virginia state Senate candidate Tina Ramirez to Child Protective Services.

Leavitt, who describes himself on Twitter as an "Award-Winning Multimedia Journalist," trolled various Twitter accounts that celebrated Columbus Day. "Why are you celebrating torture, rape, murder, and enslavement?" Leavitt wrote in response to Columbus Day posts from sitting GOP U.S. lawmakers, the Yonkers Police Department, Ramirez, and others.

He also posted the question on another tweet from Ramirez, which was not at all related to Columbus Day — Ramirez fired back, "I teach my daughter real American history. I refuse to join the radical left’s campaign to erase history."

"Can someone please call child care services on Tina Ramirez who's teaching her child to be a racist?" Leavitt responded.

"Mighty bold and liberal of you to lecture a Hispanic mother with a black daughter on racism. What's next? Are you going to lecture me on women’s rights?" Ramirez replied.

Leavitt apparently decided to take it upon himself to make the call, because he posted a series of tweets lamenting how long he had been on hold with the child abuse hotline — it is unclear whether Leavitt ever spoke to anyone on the hotline to report Ramirez

"The Virginia State hotline for child abuse has a 10+ minute hold and is experiencing 'high call volumes' with 14 callers ahead of me. This is absolutely unacceptable. How many people try to report child abuse and hang up? How many children will continue to be abused?" he tweeted. He later noted that the hotline had "a 60+ minute hold & is experiencing 'high call volumes' with 14 callers ahead of me."

Ramirez described Leavitt's behavior as "appalling."

"He waited an hour on hold, tying up the lines of our CPS professionals trying to help Virginia’s children. The radical left is willing to put our children at risk to cancel conservatives," she tweeted. "It's no surprise that a member of the radical left is willing to go so far as to call CPS on a single mother - simply because they want to erase history. The radical left doesn’t want parents making decisions for their own families," she added.

Christopher Columbus has higher net favorability rating among Hispanics in the US than President Biden and VP Harris, according to poll

The late explorer Christopher Columbus has a higher net favorability rating among Hispanics in the U.S. than current U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a recently conducted poll.

The poll found that 53% viewed Columbus favorably while 24% viewed him unfavorably, giving the historical figure a positive 29% net favorability rating.

Biden scored a positive 7% net favorability rating and Harris got a paltry 4% positive net favorability rating — while 49% had a favorable view of Biden, 42% had an unfavorable view of him. Similarly, while 45% had a favorable view of Harris, 41% had an unfavorable view of the political figure.

“We conducted a national poll of Hispanics for @bienvenido_us.

We’re not surprised the same people who came up with “Latinx” think Hispanics don’t like Christopher Columbus — and got it wrong.

Have y’all considered asking Hispanics how they feel about issues? 🤔”
— WPA Intelligence (@WPA Intelligence) 1665425145

"The national poll was conducted by WPA Intelligence in collaboration with Visto Media on behalf of Bienvenido. The study interviewed 1,086 Hispanics in the U.S. October 4-6, 2022 with a nationally representative sample that was calibrated to Census data to ensure its accuracy," according to an infographic posted by Bienvenido.

The organization describes itself on Twitter as a "non-profit uplifting Hispanic communities through classic American values."

"It is not surprising that the same people who think Hispanics like being called 'Latinx' have also assumed Hispanics are offended by Christopher Columbus — and got it completely wrong, again," principal and managing Director of WPA Intelligence Conor Maguire noted, according to the Daily Wire. "In the future, maybe progressives should just ask Hispanics how they feel about issues?"

"When you juxtapose Christopher Columbus’ popularity among Hispanics with the misguided efforts to 'cancel' him by progressive activists and politicians, it shows how out of touch the far left is with our community," Bienvenido president Abraham Enriquez said, according to the outlet. "The reality is that most Hispanics, especially those who are immigrants, view Columbus quite favorably."
