Democrats dump Eric Swalwell after sexual assault allegations implode his career

Democrats have turned on California Rep. Eric Swalwell after former staffers accused him of sexual assault and other sexual misconduct, prompting the gubernatorial hopeful to scrap his campaign altogether.

Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor just two days after several bombshell reports cited ex-staffers accusing the congressman of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior. Although Swalwell has denied all the allegations, pressure in the form of leaked videos, investigations, and rescinded endorsements pushed the lawmaker to drop out Sunday.

'We should take her story seriously.'

"I am suspending my campaign for Governor," Swalwell said in a statement on X. "To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past."

"I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s."

Swalwell's trouble did not stop there, with dozens of his colleagues condemning the congressman in the immediate aftermath of the reports about the allegations.

"I have read the San Francisco Chronicle’s account and I am deeply distressed by its allegations," Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said in a statement on X. "This woman was brave to come forward, and we should take her story seriously. I am withdrawing my endorsement immediately, and believe that he should withdraw from the race."

"Following the incredibly disturbing sexual assault accusations against Congressman Eric Swalwell, we call for a swift investigation into these incidents and for the Congressman to immediately end his campaign to be California's next Governor," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said in a post on X. "This is unacceptable of anyone — certainly not an elected official — and must be taken seriously."

Not only did Democrats call for a full-fledged investigation, but several lawmakers and former staffers called for Swalwell's removal from office.

Lawmakers are now leading a bipartisan effort to expel Swalwell and Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas, who similarly suspended his re-election campaign after admitting to an affair with a former aide who tragically took her own life by setting herself on fire.

"I've seen enough," Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman of California said in a post on X. "With his nuanced statement aimed at defending likely criminal charges, Swalwell all but admits a per se abuse of power under House ethics rules: sex with a subordinate."

"He must now drop out of the Governor's race and resign from Congress. Rep. Tony Gonzales, who admitted to the same violation, should also resign. If they don't, I will support voting to expel both of them."

The overcrowded Democratic primary for California governor is now down to five candidates. Notably, Republican candidates Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco are leading the general election polls, but Swalwell's support is likely to shift to the remaining Democrats.

JFK's grandson launches congressional bid to replace Jerry Nadler

Another member of the Kennedy political dynasty is launching a high-profile campaign, and this time it's for Congress.

Jack Schlossberg, former President John F. Kennedy's 32-year-old grandson, announced his congressional campaign to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York. Schlossberg originally rose to political stardom on TikTok, where, like many of his relatives, he would criticize and mock Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

'With control of Congress, there's nothing we can't do.'

Schlossberg will be entering a crowded primary race alongside state Assemblyman Micah Lasher and nonprofit CEO Liam Elkind. These candidates are looking to represent New York's 12th congressional district, which is one of the most Democratic districts in the state and boasts one of the highest incomes per capita in the country.

On his campaign website, the Kennedy heir said he launched his congressional bid because "the best part of the greatest city on earth needs to be heard loud and clear in Washington and deserves a representative who won't back down."

In his campaign announcement, Schlossberg also emphasized his ambition for Democrats to take back control of the House. Republicans currently hold a historically narrow advantage in the House, partially due to two Democratic vacancies following the deaths of Reps. Sylvester Turner of Texas and Raul Grijalva of Arizona.

"We deserve better, and we can do better," Schlossberg said. "And it starts with the Democratic Party winning back control of the House of Representatives."

Notably, Schlossberg is running to replace a Democrat in a deep-blue district, meaning the partisan split in the House will be unaffected by his candidacy.

"With control of Congress, there's nothing we can't do," Schlossberg said. "Without it, we're helpless to a third term."

"My name is Jack Schlossberg, and I'm running for Congress to represent my home: New York's 12th congressional district, where I was born and raised."

Ivanka Trump met with Ukrainian refugees during a recent visit to Poland

Ivanka Trump, the popular eldest daughter of former President Donald Trump, recently traveled to Poland to meet with Ukrainian refugees and deliver food to families.

The former president’s daughter shared the experience with her followers on social media, the New York Post reported.

She said, “Grateful to have spent the last few days in Krakow & Warsaw to meet Ukrainian and Polish faith leaders who have shown so much compassion & love to Ukrainian families in need & for the opportunity to bear witness to the love, strength & resilience within each of these families.”

Ms. Trump shared photos of her playing the guitar alongside a young girl, chatting with teenage refugees, and standing with a mother and her newborn child.

Her trip materialized through an invitation from CityServe, a non-profit organization that has been delivering food and aid to refugees.

The Daily Mail reported that a spokesperson for the organization said, “There [Ivanka Trump] met with dozens of pastors serving Ukrainians on the frontlines, many of which helped support the one million meal distribution in March.”

“This week, they brought meals, financial support and toys to dozens of Ukrainian families seeking both short-term and long-term refuge in Poland until they can safely return to Ukraine,” the spokesperson added.

Reportedly, Ms. Trump has been involved in several efforts to provide relief to Ukrainians in need since March. CityServe says that she has purchased and helped distribute one million meals into Ukraine and was vital in delivering several cargo planes worth of requested medical supplies that will be distributed among hospitals and clinics throughout Ukraine.

Ms. Trump is just the latest high-profile American figure to visit the Ukrainian people.

In late April, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the U.S. federal government’s role in providing the Ukrainian military with more than $300 million in financing. In early May, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a delegation of Congressional Democrats met with Zelenskyy to show support for the Ukrainian government. Shortly after Pelosi’s trip to Ukraine, First Lady Jill Biden made a surprise trip to Ukraine and met with her Ukrainian counterpart, Olen Zelenska.

About a week after the first lady’s trip to Ukraine, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell led a delegation of Congressional Republicans to meet with Zelenskyy in Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv.

There are currently no known plans for President Joe Biden to visit Ukraine or host Zelenskyy.

Poll: Biden's favorability drops to new low in May as Americans lose patience with rising costs and inflation

President Joe Biden’s approval rating fell in May to its lowest point since he took office.

According to a poll published by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Research, only 39% of adults in the U.S. approve of Biden’s performance as president.

Overall, only about two in ten adults believe the U.S. is heading in the right direction or that the economy is in a good condition. Fox News reported that in April, about three in ten adults believed both. These drops in favorability were largely concentrated among Democratic voters with just 33% of the president’s own party believing that the country was headed in the right direction, down from 49% in April.

Among Democrats, Biden’s overall approval sits at 73% which indicates a drop from 82% in the same poll from last year. In 2021, Biden never dropped below 82% approval.

Last year, a similar poll conducted by the Associated Press showed Biden had an approval rating of 63% which is 24 points higher than his current approval rating.

Biden’s handling of the economy is one of the largest reasons for his dismal poll numbers as two-thirds of Americans are saying they disapprove of the way his administration has presided over the situation.

According to the poll, only 18% of Americans say that Biden’s policies have helped the economy more than they have hurt it, which is down from 24% in March. At the same time, 51% of Americans say that his economic policies have hurt the economy more than they have helped and 30% of respondents say that Biden’s policies have not made a difference on way or the other.

Biden’s performance in the polls has been slipping since January as several polls conducted across the political spectrum indicate Americans are increasingly frustrated with a wide range of issues stemming from record high gas prices and historic levels of inflation to a nationwide baby formula shortage.

Biden’s poll numbers have suffered hits from constituencies that have historically been reliable voting blocs for Democrats. A recent Quinnipiac poll suggested that Biden’s approval among Hispanics has fallen to 26%, but whether this will affect voting trends remains to be seen. The same Quinnipiac poll conducted a year ago had Hispanic support for Biden at 55%.

The plummeting approval numbers are not confined to Biden, however. Recent polls indicate that Americans are prepared to oust Democrats from Congress. 39% of respondents favored generic Democratic candidates with 46% of respondents favoring generic Republican candidates.

Far-left congresswoman and Squad member Rashida Tlaib introduced a resolution calling Israel's creation a 'catastrophe'

Rashida Tlaib, a Democratic congresswoman from Michigan and member of the Squad, introduced a resolution Monday calling for U.S. recognition of the “Nakba,” a term translating to “catastrophe” commonly used by Palestinian activists to refer to the establishment of the state of Israel.

The resolution, titled “Recognizing the Nakba and Palestinian refugees’ rights,” was submitted a week and a half after Israeli Independence Day, which coincides with the Palestinian Nakba Day, Fox News reported. Tlaib’s resolution calls for the U.S. to “commemorate the Nakba through official recognition and remembrance,” while also claiming that the Nakba “refers not only to a historical event but to an ongoing process of Israel’s expropriation of Palestinian land and its dispossession of the Palestinian people that continues to this day.”

Referring to the year of Israel’s creation, U.N. recognition of Israel’s creation, and ongoing U.S. support of Israel on Twitter, Tlaib said, “The Palestinian people since the 48 Nakba have been living under oppression and violent racism. Silence + blank checks enables more death and violence.”

The resolution claims that Palestinians opposed the U.N.’s 1947 recommendation to partition the region of Palestine into two states, one for Arabs and one for Jews. Tlaib’s resolution states that prior to Israel declaring its independence on May 14, 1948, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their homes “often after attacks by Zionist militias.” Tlaib’s resolution does not make any reference to attacks by Arab peoples on Jews or historic Jewish communities.

The resolution does not include a single mention of “anti-Semitism,” and its only use of the term “Jewish state” is in reference to a claim that Israel’s formation displaced “at least 750,000 Palestinian refugees.”

The congresswoman’s resolution also characterizes the situation differently than the State Department’s Office of the Historian, which states that after the U.N. resolution, “[f]ighting began with attacks by irregular bands of Palestinian Arabs … against Jewish cities, settlements and armed forces.”

Tlaib is a daughter of Palestinian immigrants and submitted the resolution on behalf of herself and her peers in the left-wing Squad, which commonly takes anti-Israel policy stances. In total, the resolution was submitted on behalf of Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, Marie Newman, and Betty McCollum.

Tlaib has a history of making anti-Semitic comments, having previously accused lawmakers who support Israel of having dual loyalty, and has very deep ties to anti-Semitic organizations through groups funding and supporting her during her congressional campaigns.
