Dr. Anthony Fauci attends packed brunch event before WHCD after ceremoniously bowing out of dinner over 'personal risk'

Dr. Anthony Fauci attended a swanky event before the White House Correspondent's Association Dinner on Saturday after making headlines for withdrawing from the WCHD itself.

What is the background?

ABC News reportedly invited Fauci to the WHCD dinner, which was held on Saturday for the first time since 2019. But Fauci announced last week that he would not attend the event because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fauci decided not to attend the dinner "because of my individual assessment of my personal risk," the New York Times reported.

Event organizers did not implement a face mask mandate for the more than 2,500 dinner attendees. Instead, to enter the dinner, everyone was required to prove they tested negative for COVID-19 on the day of the dinner. Every attendee was also required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

But what did Fauci do?

While America's most controversial medical doctor did not attend the dinner itself, he attended a packed pre-dinner event — and did not wear a face mask.

Fauci attended the "Garden Brunch," an event that takes place the afternoon before the WHCD. The event "honors the freedom of the press and highlights the important work of veterans and military family organizations," according to WHC Insider.

Hollywood celebrities, journalists, politicians, and even top military leaders attended the event, according to TVNewser.

Here is Fauci with CNN anchor Don Lemon and journalist Jonathan Capehart:

Dr. Fauci even gave an interview at the brunch event in which he struck an unusually positive tone about the trajectory of the pandemic.

"We've been 2.5 years in the one of the most stressful times we've had since, you know, world wars if you look at that historically. We've still got to be careful; it isn't completely over, but it's certainly going in the right direction," Fauci said. "So we're glad to see people able to come out; they're vaccinated, they're boosted, they're tested, so it's pretty good."

Just last week, Fauci declared that the COVID pandemic "is not over."

9 Responses You Should Use When The Mask Police Come For You

Democrats dismissing their own rules don't face the same consequences of their subjects. Here are some of their excuses you may use.

Newsom claims he removed mask for 'brief second' to snap photo with NBA legend. Photo evidence shows otherwise.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom stopped short on Monday of admitting that he made a mistake after he was caught, once again, not abiding by COVID-19 rules.

Instead, the Democratic governor defended himself and denied what photographic evidence clearly showed.

What is the background?

Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) flouted COVID-19 mask rules while attending the NFC Championship Game at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

By not wearing face coverings, the Democratic leaders violated a series of COVID restrictions, including California's universal indoor mask mandate (which was recently extended), Los Angeles County's mask guidelines, and those in place at SoFi Stadium.

Newsom's hypocrisy on COVID restrictions was exposed after NBA legend Magic Johnson posted a picture with Newsom on social media. In that photo, Newsom was not wearing a mask. Johnson also posted photos with Garcetti and San Francisco Mayor London Breed (D), neither of whom were wearing masks.

How did Newsom respond?

At a press conference, Newsom abdicated all responsibility for skirting COVID rules, instead saying he removed his mask only for the photo with Johnson.

"I was very judicious yesterday, very judicious," Newsom claimed.

"You’ll see the photo that I did take, where Magic was kind enough, generous enough, to ask me for a photograph and in my left hand’s the mask and I took the photo," he explained. "The rest of the time I wore it as we all should, um — not when I had a glass of water — and I encourage everybody else to do so. And, uh, that’s it."

When one reporter asked Newsom if he should have "reconsidered" taking his mask off "given your history with this issue" — a clear reference to Newsom's serial hypocrisy on COVID restrictions — Newsom almost admitted that he had made a mistake, but stopped short of actually saying that.

"Yes, of course. I was trying to be gracious. I made a mis — I was trying to be gracious," he said. "I took the mask off for a brief second, but no, I encourage people to continue to wear them."

Is that true?

The Los Angeles Rams' "fan cam" caught Newsom without his mask on while sitting in his seat. At the time the picture was taken, it was not the "brief second" that he met with Johnson for the photograph.

Newsom's mask was down around his face, dangling from one ear. He was not eating or drinking. Interestingly, none of the people around him were wearing masks, either.

Nancy Pelosi torched for swanky maskless Napa Valley fundraiser: 'It's utter hypocrisy'

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi found herself embroiled in another situation that had unsavory optics once again on Sunday. The California Democrat was seen schmoozing with Democratic deep-pocket donors, all of which were not wearing masks, at a Napa Valley fundraiser while Americans are still trapped in Afghanistan. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was also trounced with criticism for dancing up a storm this weekend.

New York Times journalist Kenneth Vogel posted an invitation for the Sunday morning fundraiser event, which shows that tickets started at $100 and were as much as $29,000 to chair. The money raised went to vulnerable frontline Democrats who are in danger of losing their seats in the 2022 midterm elections.

Vogel posted video from the fundraiser in Napa Valley, which showed no social distancing and no mask-wearing except for the wait staff.

This appears to be a video of @SpeakerPelosi talking to donors at the @dccc retreat this weekend in Napa. https://t.co/YsqRvM16ex

— Kenneth P. Vogel (@kenvogel) 1629646947.0

The event was held in California's Napa County, where COVID-19 cases from Aug. 13 through Aug. 19 are up 71% from the previous week, according to the Napa Valley Register. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designate Napa County as a "high level of community transmission." The event was held outdoors and face masks are not required outdoors, but the CDC recommends people "consider wearing a mask in crowded outdoor settings and for activities with close contact with others who are not fully vaccinated" in areas with high numbers of COVID-19 cases.

Social media commenters lampooned Pelosi for the maskless event.

  • House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy: "Speaker Pelosi wants to lock you down again while she wines and dines with her political donors. It's utter hypocrisy."
  • Independent journalist Glenn Greenwald: "All the servants fully masked. The almost-entirely old, white, rich crowd of DCCC donors free to go maskless as they're served."
  • Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.): "SpeakerPelosi does not care about #COVID. Democrats don't care about covid. They only care about controlling you. Magical covid science: The virus stops spreading the minute you sit down to eat or when you speak in a microphone or if you are one of the elites. Liars."
  • Progressive political commentator Jimmy Dore: "Isn't this what they used to call a "Super-Spreader Event"? They don't seem worried at all. What do the rich elite know that we don't?"
  • Attorney Harmeet K. Dhillon: "SUPERSPREADER EVENT!"
  • "Relatable" podcast host Allie Beth Stuckey: "They're not scared of COVID, in case you hadn't noticed."
  • Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell: "The white people are all free to breath without a mask. The people of color must wear masks - and serve. Stop voting for Democrats…they are laughing at how easy you are to manipulate."
  • Former Congresswoman Nan Hayworth: "Good to see the nation's malefactors having a wonderful time as the torture and slaughter--for which they bear distinct responsibility!--continue in Afghanistan."
  • Newsmax host Steve Cortes: "Worst part of this video is that workers have to mask up, but not the swanky Dem donors. Two sets of rules."
  • Conservative pundit Ned Ryun: "Not seeing those masks there. . . Almost feels like they feel the rules are more a series of suggestions that only the peasants should follow."

This is the latest case of Pelosi being caught in a situation that has damaging optics. Last month, Pelosi was seen not wearing a mask on two occasions at the U.S. Capitol building a day after the Capitol Police declared that face masks must be worn "at all times" on the House side of the complex. Last September, Pelosi violated San Francisco's health orders when she was caught on video inside a California salon without wearing a face covering.

Schumer also received backlash for his questionable behavior this weekend. With as many as 10,000 Americans still trapped in Afghanistan following Biden's disastrous withdrawal, Schumer was seen dancing without a care in the world on Saturday.

During the "We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert" in Central Park, the Schumer was caught on video dancing closely with late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert, who was maskless.

Chicago Teachers Union exec says it is too dangerous to open schools as she vacations at pool in the Caribbean

A Chicago Teachers Union leader is facing a wave of backlash after bragging about being on a Caribbean vacation, while at the same time demanding that schools remain closed because it is too dangerous.

Sarah Chambers, a member of the Chicago Teachers Union executive board and area vice president, boasted about a recent vacation to Puerto Rico. Chambers gloated about renting a house on the Caribbean island, and having the pool to herself on New Year's Eve.

"Spending the last day of 2020 poolside," Chambers wrote on a since-deleted Instagram post with a photo of her lounging by the pool. "We have the whole pool to ourselves."

"Then, we are going to old San Juan to get some yummy seafood mofongo! We have an entire private Airbnb house to ourselves," Chambers stated on her "sarah4justice" Instagram account. "I'm here with my friend who also had covid."

Another post simply read, "Pool life."

However, only a few hours before Chambers was sunbathing in a bikini and making plans to get yummy seafood mofongo in Puerto Rico's capital, she rallied against reopening the schools in Chicago because she deemed it to be too dangerous.

On Thursday, Chambers said that reopening Chicago's public schools for in-person learning on Monday would result in a widespread coronavirus outbreak and COVID-19 deaths.

"Sign the petition to continue to work remote, to be safe," Chambers wrote on Twitter before making her social media account private. "The news is in Lori's pocket like always! We've had so many family members die already, even remote. 50% of my staff, working in the building got Covid, imagine how many would die with reopening!"

After the criticism over her hypocrisy, Chambers attempted to defend her sunny vacation.

"I got 4 covid tests (2 rapid, 2 PCR) b4 coming here & wore 2 masks (N95)," she wrote on Twitter. "Scientists said airplanes are safer than grocery stores bc airplanes have ICU level filtration & everyone wears masks. My doc said it's extremely unlikely for me to get Covid again since I had it so badly."

She also lashed out on Twitter by saying, "If you haven't had someone break into your house and try to strangle and assault you in your house or covid 60+ days where you could barely walk or talk this year, then don't talk to me."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise Americans not to travel to Puerto Rico, and categorizes the island as having a "very high level of COVID-19" infection.

"Travelers should avoid all travel to Puerto Rico," the CDC warns. "Travel may increase your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19."

The Chicago Teachers Union has threatened a possible strike if the schools reopen, according to WGN-TV. The CTU wants to delay in-person learning until all of the teachers get the coronavirus vaccine.

Chambers was reportedly fired in 2017 for "leaving her own classroom to barge into classrooms of other teachers and issue her own instructions to students, interfering with statewide tests, and participating in a scheme to remove and transport students without any chaperone who had cleared criminal background checks."

She was reinstated in 2019 with the help of the union.

Chambers allegedly traveled to Venezuela as part of a delegation of CTU members in 2019.

"Their goals were to learn what they could from Venezuela's Bolivarian Revolution, exchange views on effective education and to show solidarity with the students, teachers and social movements of Venezuela," according to the Post Millennial.

"The teachers' delegation sat down with Vladimir Castillo, the Venezuelan Director of International Affairs. They learned that Chavez started to talk about socialism in 2005, at the World Social Forum in Brazil, and that a few years after 2007 and 2008, community councils emerged as a result."

In August, the Chicago Teachers Union struck a nerve with a since-deleted tweet that said the organization was "completely in support" of the construction of a mock guillotine outside of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' home. Coincidentally, the Chicago Teachers Union owns tens of millions in Amazon stock.

Head of Scotland's government gets caught breaking her own COVID-19 law: 'This was a stupid mistake'

Hypocrisy among elected officials when it comes to COVID-19 restrictions they advocated for and put into place is enough to drive citizens crazy, and no population is likely experiencing that more today than the people in Scotland.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the head of nation's government, was caught violating her own COVID-19 law, and now she's issuing public apologies for the flub.

Join the club

The notion of "COVID rules for thee, but not for me" is something Americans have witnessed repeatedly from their politicians. The problem has been especially notable recently as the surge in the virus has led to more government-imposed restrictions.

  • No one will forget California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's unmasked event at a fancy California restaurant.
  • Nor will folks from the Bay Area likely let news of San Francisco Democratic Mayor London Breed throwing a maskless party at the same restaurant a day later slip their minds.
  • Denver's Democratic mayor, Michael Hancock, will long be remembered as the elected official who tweeted a warning to Mile High City residents to stay home for Thanksgiving just 30 minutes before his plane left to visit his daughter in Mississippi for the holiday.
  • New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo was caught violating his own Thanksgiving advice by planning to have his 89-year-old mother over for dinner. He was shamed into rescinding the invitation.
  • Austin Mayor Steve Adler, a Democrat, was forced to apologize after having the audacity to filming and sending a "stay at home" message to his constituents — from a tropical resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
  • And just a week ago, Rhode Island Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo was photographed at a wine bar not wearing a face mask days after telling Rhode Islanders to "stay home except for essential activities."

It turns out, though, that embarrassing and glaring hypocrisy on COVID-19 restrictions is not a characteristic unique to U.S. officials.

What did the Scotland leader do?

The Scottish Sun reported Tuesday night that Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon broke her own mask laws Friday.

A "concerned member of the public" photographed Sturgeon chatting maskless at a pub in Edinburgh on Friday and shared the picture with the newspaper.

According to current Scottish laws, the Sun said, customers in "hospitality settings" — which would include pubs — are required to wear a mask unless seated at a table.

The photo published by the Sun showed a maskless Sturgeon standing and talking with three elderly women at the "hospitality setting" following a funeral wake that had taken place in another part of the facility.

Sturgeon, who has been a major advocate for masks and has repeatedly lectured about their importance, was extremely apologetic.

"Last Friday, while attending a funeral wake, I had my mask off briefly. This was a stupid mistake and I'm really sorry," she told the Sun. "I talk every day about the importance of masks, so I'm not going to offer any excuses. I was in the wrong, I'm kicking myself and I'm sorry."

Anything else?

According to the Sun, the law has been on the books for months:

The mandatory use of face masks for customers in hospitality settings has been law since September 14. It is now set down in the Health Protection (Coronavirus) (Restrictions and Requirements) (Local Levels) (Scotland) Regulations 2020.

Schedule 7 of the law details a “requirement to wear face coverings in certain indoor places", including restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs.

Violations of the law are punishable by an $80 fine, and penalties double for repeat offenders, up to $1,300, the paper said, adding that violators "can also be prosecuted for breaches, with unlimited fines."

Around the time the photo was taken, Sturgeon also announced a draconian three-week lockdown that will start the day after Christmas.

She also ordered that Scots can meet with loved ones for Christmas for only 24 hours on Dec. 25.

Dr. Birx took family trip to Delaware vacation home, flouting her own coronavirus guidance

The day after Thanksgiving, Dr. Deborah Birx traveled to one of her vacation properties in Delaware. She was joined by three generations of her family from two households, openly flouting her own guidance she gave only weeks earlier.

Birx, her husband, daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren all visited a vacation property on Fenwick Island last month and shared a meal together, according to the Associated Press.

The family trip was a direct contradiction to the advice that Birx gave to Americans regarding Thanksgiving gatherings. On Nov. 20, Birx gave an interview to CNN, where she warned Americans to "be vigilant" and limit holiday celebrations to "your immediate household."

The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force admitted that she went to one of her vacation homes, and her family shared a meal together.

"She insisted the purpose of the roughly 50-hour visit was to deal with the winterization of the property before a potential sale — something she says she previously hadn't had time to do because of her busy schedule," the AP reported.

"I did not go to Delaware for the purpose of celebrating Thanksgiving," Birx said in a statement.

Birx claimed that everyone who went on the family trip Delaware trip belongs to her "immediate household," despite the members living in two different homes.

Birx and her husband have a home in Washington. She also owns a home in Potomac, Maryland. That's where her elderly parents and her daughter's family live. Birx visits every so often.

Kathleen Flynn, whose brother is married to Birx's daughter, is the one who exposed the family trip. "She cavalierly violated her own guidance," Flynn said of Birx's hypocrisy.

Flynn said she went public with the information because she is concerned about her own parents. Flynn's mother, 77, regularly visits the Potomac house to provide child care, and then returns to her home near Baltimore, where she lives with her 92-year-old husband, who has health complications.

Three weeks ago, Birx lectured Americans for having Thanksgiving gatherings with family.

"We know people may have made mistakes over the Thanksgiving time period," Birx said. "If you're young and you gathered, you need to be tested about five to 10 days later. But you need to assume that you're infected and not go near your grandparents and aunts and others without a mask."

Birx also instructed families to "even mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state."
