Twitter torches CNN's Chris Cillizza for claiming Republicans have become more right than Democrats have swung to the left

Chris Cillizza of CNN tried to claim that Republicans are at fault for the polarization in Congress, and Twitter took him to task for the claim.

The editor-at-large wrote that Republicans had swung more to the right than Democrats had swung to the left based on a report by the Pew Research Center.

"The technical term is 'asymmetric polarization,'" wrote Cillizza. "It means that one political party is getting more partisan (or polarized) than the other -- or that one side is moving closer to its ideological pole than the other."

The study said Democrats in Congress had only grown marginally in their support for left-wing politics while Republicans had grown far more to the right.

"What those findings mean is that not only have Republicans moved faster and further to the ideological right than Democrats have gone to the left, but also that they have made the entirety of the House and Senate more conservative over the past 50 years," Cillizza added.

Many on social media excoriated Cillizza's claim and pointed out many examples where Democrats had abandoned positions that are now considered conservative.

"My dude, Obama was supporting traditional marriage in 2008 during his presidential campaign," Noam Blum pointed out.

"Only because Democrats were liberal then & have grown more illiberal & leftist since," responded Dan McLaughlin of National Review.

"He really believes this s***. Ask yourself this: what did Ronald Reagan support compared to what the modern Republican Party supports. Now do the same for 1990s Bill Clinton and Democrats. The other side appears to have moved when you fall off the edge," said columnist Derek Hunter.

"Obama ran against gay marriage. His Veep promised repeatedly that he wouldn't take away your guns. Bill Clinton said the era of big government was over, implemented Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law," read another tweet.

"I remember the campaign to teach kindergarteners about transgenderism in 1985," another detractor replied.

National Democratic Party official suggests re-education for Trump supporters: 'How do you deprogram 75 million people?'

David Atkins, a newly elected California member of the Democratic National Committee, declared recently that Democrats and liberals should "start thinking in terms of post-WWII Germany or Japan" in order to "deprogram 75 million people."

The 75 million people he referred to are presumably Trump supporters.

According to the Associated Press, President Donald Trump received more than 73 million votes during the 2020 presidential election.

What are the details?

Conservative activist Jack Posobiec tweeted Atkins' remarks, captioning them, "A Democrat Party official in California is calling for national re-education camps for families who voted for Trump. This is not OK."

The tweets in question began, "How do you deprogram 75 million people who would literally die to stick it to the domestic enemies the teevee and youtube conspiracy vids told them to hate?"

He added, "No seriously...how *do* you deprogram 75 million people? Where do you start? Fox? Facebook? We have to start thinking in terms of post-WWII Germany or Japan. Or the failures of Reconstruction in the South."

"This is not your standard partisan policy disagreement," said Atkins, who is also a self-described author and activist. "This is a conspiracy theory fueled belligerent death cult against reality & basic decency. The only actual policy debates of note are happening within the dem coalition between left and center left."

He wasn't done there.

After receiving comments questioning his tweets, Atkins continued by attacking some conservatives for their ideals.

"I know conservatives are upset by some of the responses here," he continued. "And yeah, many are out of line. But what do you expect people to do in self-preservation? The Right has been running 4 years on 'f*** your feelings, my conspiracy theories are valid opinions, and we have more guns."

"You can't run on a civil war footing hopped up on conspiracy theories hating everyone who lives in cities, mainlining Fox/Breitbart/QAnon, threatening to kidnap governors and shoot protesters, without people trying to figure out how to reverse the brainwashing," he continued.

"[I] mean, for chrissakes, conservatives are literally giving themselves COVID just to own the libs," Atkins railed. "They're dying in COVID wards insisting they don't have COVID because it must be a liberal plot. People are gonna try to figure out how to defend themselves."

Anything else?

According to his website, Atkins served as a volunteer in Howard Dean's failed presidential campaign.

"In the 15 years since, I haven't stopped organizing to beat Republicans, support progressive causes, and hold the Democratic Party accountable to its values," the page boasts.

"Recently as a party activist I have ... [c]o-authored a successful resolution that the California Democratic Party passed in support key economic components of the Green New Deal," his page continues, pointing out the rest of his more recent accomplishments, which you can read all about here.

Florida Dems are angry at Biden campaign over pandemic restrictions on canvassing, and the GOP is closing the voter registration gap

Democratic Party members in Florida are grumbling over restrictions on door-to-door canvassing that have been instituted due to the coronavirus pandemic, and that Republican efforts are closing the gap in the key swing state.

Disgruntled Democrats told Politico that they're losing the battle because of the Biden campaign's insistence on restricting personal interactions.

"It's late in the game now," said state Sen. Jason Pizzo, a Democrat from Miami.

"There's been no pushback from us, meaning that for every 100 doors that Republicans have proverbially knocked on, it's not like they pissed people off to the point where they've run to the Democratic Party because they're pissed at the GOP," he explained. "It's shown to be effective."

"Democrats aren't meeting people at their doors"

Republican efforts have whittled away the traditional voter registration lead held by Democrats to just 185,000, or 1.3%, according to the latest data from the Florida Division of Elections.

Florida Trump campaign director Susie Wiles told Politico that going to door-to-door when Democrats couldn't has given them the chance to reduce the Democrats'` advantage.

"We've turned our focus to voter registration in a more meaningful way than before. Everyone said you can't do it — get the gap between Republicans and Democrats to such a small number. Well, you can do it," said Wiles.

"We did it through the mail, but the main way we had success was at the doors," she added. "And because the Democrats aren't meeting people at their doors like our campaign is doing, we are having great success."

Record numbers of new voters

The Republicans were able to add 58,000 new voters for the month of August, a record number. By comparison, that figure is a whopping 91% greater than the same figure in 2016 for the Republicans.

That slim margin between Republican and Florida voters is very important. In 2016 Trump won the state with only 1% more of the votes. At the time, Democrats had an advantage of 327,000 voters over the Republicans. Unless voter patterns have changed drastically, the stats point to a Trump victory in the key state.
