'Blessing from God': Furry, four-legged sleuth helps officers find missing toddler

Police officers searching high and low for a missing toddler in Louisville, Kentucky, last month received an unlikely assist from a four-legged hero.

While a drone and police helicopter searched overhead for signs of the 3-year-old boy, officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department's Seventh Division canvased the neighborhood, keenly aware that time was of the essence.

'Lassie found him!'

Officer Josh Thompson indicated that a fellow officer heard tell of a report from a woman "that called in about a kid. It wasn't the same description, but it was a young kid — hit her Ring doorbell camera, ran off."

After following up with the woman, Thompson learned that the boy had ventured to the home across the street.

The front porch of that residence was flanked by packages, and there were no obvious signs of anyone being inside. So Thompson inspected the rear of the house, taking note that "there's some spots where a kid may be."

When returning to the front of the home, hoping that this time someone might answer the door, Thompson realized that he was being tailed.

"There's a dog, starts walking with me," Thompson recalled. "At first, you don't know about dogs. You don't know where the dog's from, so I'm kind of being a little leery of the dog. He's barking, chirping at me a little bit, and then continues to follow me back to the front porch."

The dog was relentless, yapping at Thompson in an apparent effort to get his attention.

Bodycam footage shows Thompson gesture to the dog and say, "Let's go find him! Come on! Let's go!" Immediately, the dog spins, then begins leading the officer back toward the rear of the house.

"It led me all the way back to the back yard. At that point, I'm thinking, 'Okay, this kid's in this back yard,'" recalled Thompson.

Noticing that the back door was ajar, officers briefly checked inside the house for the child but found nothing. When the officers came out empty-handed, they were greeted again by the dog, which hurried over to a parked car.

Moments later, Thompson heard his fellow officer, who had accompanied the dog through the back yard, announce victory: "I got him!"

"The kid was in the front passenger seat, terrified," said Thompson.

With some coaching from the officers, the kid was able to unlock the door and was greeted with cheers.

"I don't think I've ever seen a happier kid in my life," said Thompson. "He jumped out of the car, bear-hugged my neck, and wouldn't let go."

In the footage, it's clear that the dog was similarly excited over the result, wagging its tail excitedly and darting its nose from officer to officer.

"Lassie found him!" says one of the officers.

Thompson suggested that in his two years patrolling the neighborhood, he had never seen the hero dog before or since.

"I don't know where the dog came from," he said. "But it was a blessing from God that day."

The LMPD stated, "Outstanding work by our officers, and a four-legged friend who reminded us that heroes come in all forms."

Knifed for 'being a Christian'? Suspect allegedly stabs man and his dog after asking about victim's religion

A suspect allegedly stabbed a man and his dog Sunday in Washington state after the suspect asked the victim what religion he is, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office said.

The 54-year-old male victim called 911 reporting that an unknown male stabbed him near the S S Quickstop Grocery in Parkland just before 6:30 a.m. and that the male fled southbound on Park Avenue S., officials said. Parkland is about 45 minutes south of Seattle.

'This would actually be a hate crime based on religion.'

When deputies arrived, the victim was in serious condition and told deputies the unknown man had come up to him and asked what religion he was, officials said.

"The victim answered the man and said something about being a Christian, and the man then attacked and stabbed the victim and his dog," officials added.

The victim provided a description of the suspect prior to being transported to a local hospital; the victim's dog was also in serious condition and was transported to a local animal hospital and was taken into surgery immediately, officials said.

Deputies used a K-9 to search the area for more than two hours but were unable to locate the suspect, officials said.

At 8:40 a.m. while conducting an area check, a deputy saw the suspect in the 800 block of 112th St. S, and the suspect fled behind a nearby home, officials said.

Deputies followed the suspect and reported that shots had been fired at 8:47 a.m., officials said.

KOMO-TV reported that the sheriff's office confirmed the suspect was dead and that multiple deputies shot the suspect.

The sheriff's office added to KOMO that the suspect was armed with multiple knives, was resisting arrest, and approached deputies before shots were fired.

Detectives do not know the suspect's identity or his connection, if any, to the area or the house he fled behind, KOMO added.

KING-TV said the stabbing victim, Eddie Nitschke, lives in the convenience store's parking lot in a car with his girlfriend and two dogs.

Nitschke told KING he initially responded to the suspect that he wasn't religious, but the suspect kept pushing the issue about what religion he was, after which Nitschke told the suspect, "I guess Christian."

The suspect then accused Nitschke of pursuing him, KING added: "He said, 'You've been looking for me for some time,' and I said, 'I don't even know you.'"

KING said the suspect soon struck Nitschke multiple times with two knives and punctured his lung.

During the attack, Nitschke told his girlfriend to release their dog from the car, KING reported, adding that the dog attacked the suspect and was also stabbed.

"My shirt was drenched with blood," Nitschke recounted to KING.

More from KING:

At the hospital, Nitschke discovered the suspect was being treated in an adjacent room. While being interviewed by police, he heard commotion next door.

"And then I'm sitting there and then I hear 'Code red, code red' and they wheeled the guy in right beside me in the next room," Nitschke said.

After learning the suspect had died, Nitschke said he felt conflicted.

"When I found out that he died, I thought to myself, ‘Oh, he died.’ I felt bad, but then I thought, ‘He just stabbed me,’" he said.

Nitschke discharged himself from the hospital, KING said.

"They didn't want to let me go," he recalled to KING. "I just don't want to be in the hospital. I wanted to find out about my dog." It appears from KING's video report that the dog is OK.

More than 500 comments have appeared under the sheriff's office Facebook post about the incident. As you might imagine, some commenters didn't take too kindly to the suspect's actions apparently related to the victim reportedly telling him he's a Christian.

  • "I believe this would be on major news if he, the victim, wasn’t Christian," one commenter wrote.
  • "This would actually be a hate crime based on religion," another user said. "Will it be prosecuted that way? Doubtful due to the religion being Christianity."
  • "It's not a hate crime if the victim is Christian," another user said with seeming sarcasm.
  • "No protests?" another commenter wondered with tongue fully in cheek.
  • "Another hate crime attack that the mainstream media will ignore since facts don't support their agenda," another user stated. "Libs will post laughing emojis since they are mentally ill and have twisted morals."

Florida thug on parole allegedly pummels elderly man in random attack — and then targets victim's small dog

A Florida male on parole allegedly pummeled an elderly man in a random attack Sunday evening — and then hurled the 72-year-old victim's small dog by the leash into a bush.

The attack took place just before 7:50 p.m. near the oceanfront of Pompano Beach, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Anthony Tramaine Harris, 35, of Fort Lauderdale, WPLG-TV reported.

'If you’re not carrying a firearm and know how to use it, then I hope you’re still alive when BSO gets there. Good luck.'

Deputies said Harris — who was on parole for an out-of-state burglary — approached the man, who was walking his dog, and asked him, “What’s your name?” the station said.

When the victim refused to divulge it, deputies told WPLG that “Harris grabbed him, threw him to the ground, and then proceeded to punch him in the back of the head three times,” which left the victim with multiple scrapes.

The station, citing an arrest report, indicated that surveillance video shows Harris grabbing the small dog by the leash and throwing it into a bush, “which could have injured the dog.”

Deputies added to WPLG that jail records indicate that Harris was given an $11,000 bond on charges of battery on a person 65 or older, animal cruelty, and resisting arrest. The station added that Harris will remain behind bars for violating the conditions of his parole.

How are people reacting?

A number of commenters under WPLG's story about the incident made their viewpoints known:

  • "If you’re not carrying a firearm and know how to use it, then I hope you’re still alive when BSO gets there," one commenter wrote. "Good luck."
  • "Why do I 'carry' and go to the range regularly?" another user asked. "See the story above!!!"
  • "Good work. Now he can have his parole withdrawn and sent out to state to serve a long sentence," another commenter suggested before adding, "Hey crim, try that on moi, might end a little different."

Male, 36, allegedly grabs 3-year-old boy by the arm in broad-daylight kidnapping attempt — but family dog isn't having it

A 36-year-old male allegedly grabbed a 3-year-old boy by the arm in a broad-daylight kidnapping attempt in Florida over the weekend — but a dog put a stop to it.

Ron Lee Klein Jr. entered a family’s fenced-in back yard through a gate at the back of their home around noon Saturday, WFLA-TV reported, citing a St. Petersburg Police Department affidavit.

'How terrifying. So glad the dog was there with him.'

When Klein allegedly grabbed the 3-year-old by the arm and tried to pick him up, a barking dog confronted Klein, the station said, citing the affidavit.

The barking alerted someone near the child, who began running after Klein and yelling at him, WFLA reported, citing the affidavit.

Klein let go of the toddler and fled the area, the station said, citing investigators — and St. Petersburg police in the area located and arrested Klein.

Klein is facing charges of attempted kidnapping and trespassing to an enclosed area of a dwelling, WFLA said, citing the affidavit. The station said he's being held without bond.

How are people reacting?

As you might guess, commenters under WTVT-TV's Facebook post about the incident are praising the dog.

  • "So thankful the child has been saved! Thanks to the family dog. The family must be praising God! I hope this guy, doesn’t get to see the light of day!" one commenter declared.
  • "How terrifying," another user said. "So glad the dog was there with him."
  • "Get that dog a steak!" another commenter exclaimed.
  • "That's incredible!" another user stated. "Dogs can be such loyal protectors. It's amazing how instinctual their behavior can be in dangerous situations."
  • "Keep him off the streets! Good dog!!!" another commenter declared.
  • "Dogs are absolutely the best!!" another user noted.

FBI Had 26 Confidential Human Sources At Jan. 6 Events In Washington, D.C.

More than two dozen confidential human sources were in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021, according to a new report released on Thursday.

Florida says man abandoned his dog before the hurricane. State plans to bring down the hammer.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced on Tuesday authorities have found the man who they say was responsible for tying up a dog to a fence and abandoning him as Hurricane Milton was approaching the state last week.

The dog was found near the interstate by Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Orlando Morales. By the time Morales found the dog, now named Trooper, he was standing in a large puddle of water due to the heavy rain. In the video that went viral of the moment Trooper was rescued, the bull terrier was distressed and initially suspicious of Morales.

'State Troopers secured and executed a felony arrest warrant yesterday on Giovanny Aldama Garcia, 23.'

"I'm proud to announce the authorities have identified the dog's former owners, and State Attorney Suzy Lopez is now pursing animal cruelty charges against the individual. We said you'd be held accountable, and you will be held accountable," DeSantis said.

"Based upon a subsequent criminal investigation, State Troopers secured and executed a felony arrest warrant yesterday on Giovanny Aldama Garcia, 23, of Ruskin, Florida, for aggravated animal cruelty. Our agency is grateful for the unprecedented support of State Attorney Suzy Lopez and her prosecutors, particularly during a state of emergency," said Dave Kerner, executive director of Florida's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

"An arrest has been made in this case. Trooper’s former owner is going to be facing aggravated animal cruelty charges. We take this crime very seriously and this defendant will face the consequences of his actions," Lopez said on X.

NewsNation reporter Brian Entin revealed Garcia apparently told law enforcement the reason he abandoned Trooper was because he "couldn’t find anyone to pick the dog up."

Trooper is now receiving care at the Leon County Humane Society in Tallahassee.
