Gun-toting DoorDash driver turns the tables on wannabe carjackers

An armed DoorDash driver turned the tables on a couple of would-be carjackers last week in a Philadelphia suburb.

The driver arrived just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to deliver food at the Lynnewood Gardens Apartments in the 1900 block of Humphrey Merry Way in Cheltenham Township, WCAU-TV reported, citing police.

Delivery drivers 'feel the need to arm themselves for their own personal protection, and it's incidents like this that kind of reinforce that philosophy.'

It was at that point that two people — one with a gun — confronted the DoorDash driver, police told the station.

The driver told police one of the suspects demanded his keys, after which the driver threw them to the ground, WCAU reported.

The tables turn

Police said the driver — armed with a legally purchased gun and a permit to carry — soon heard a gunshot and fired back, the station said.

The two suspects ran off, but WCAU said a K-9 found 18-year-old Divine Allen Hargrove hiding near a garage.

According to the station's video report, Hargrove also was near a ghost gun that police said was loaded with an extended magazine containing 26 rounds of live ammunition.

Officials said Hargrove told police he was the victim, but the DoorDash driver described the males who approached him, and Hargrove matched, WCAU said.

Hargrove was arraigned on robbery and gun charges and taken to Montgomery County Correctional Facility after failing to post bail, WTXF-TV reported. The bail amount was $100,000 cash, WCAU added.

The other suspect got away, WCAU said, and no one was hurt.

Investigators added that the resident at the address for the DoorDash delivery didn't place the order, WTXF reported.

Officials told the station similar robberies have been reported in the area.

Lt. Andrew Snyder of Cheltenham Police told WCAU that investigators believe carjacking was the suspects' motive since DoorDash drivers don't deal with cash.

Snyder added to the station that delivery drivers "feel the need to arm themselves for their own personal protection, and it's incidents like this that kind of reinforce that philosophy."

Snyder also told WCAU that police "really want to hear from anybody who may have been a victim of something similar who just didn't report it or felt that they didn't want to get involved."

Those with information should contact Cheltenham Police at 215-885-1600 or email PoliceTips@CheltenhamPA.gov, WCAU added.

New York City announces future $20 min wage for food app workers, and it will keep increasing for the 'frontline heroes'

The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection announced that it will implement a minimum wage for food application delivery workers such as Uber Eats and Door Dash and promised an hourly wage of about $20 within the next two years.

With approximately 60,000 food delivery workers in the city, the average wage is about $7.09 per hour, according to the city's news release.

The nearly 300% wage increase will be implemented over approximately 22 months after the June 11, 2023, announcement, with a drastic increase of over $10 per hour up to $17.96 starting on July 12, 2023. In April 2025, it will jump to at least $19.96 per hour.

With earnings set to adjust annually for inflation, the wages will go above and beyond $20 per hour the following years.

"Apps have the option to pay delivery workers per trip, per hour worked, or develop their own formulas, as long as their workers make the minimum pay rate of $19.96, on average," the press release stated.

“Our delivery workers have consistently delivered for us — now, we are delivering for them,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement. “This new minimum pay rate, up by almost $13.00/hour, will guarantee these workers and their families can earn a living, access greater economic stability, and help keep our city’s legendary restaurant industry thriving.”

However, the food delivery companies have shown some opposition and messaged their employees in April 2023 with concerns that this will limit work flexibility.

"The rules put forth by the DCWP will make working conditions far worse for you. They will severely limit your flexibility. You may not be able to choose when and how you work," GrubHub said in its message.

\u201cSo now the apps are desperately sending messages wanting our support when they never gave us support whe we get injured or #Deliverista dies while working for them. \n\nHey @Grubhub @DoorDash @UberEats: Where was your support to us when we needed you the most? \n\nMinimum pay now.\u201d

DoorDash said that the new decision was “extreme policy” according to CNN and that the company may litigate against the city.

Uber Eats reportedly claimed the city is not “being honest with delivery workers.”

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, who appeared at the city's press conference, called food delivery "the American dream" and said the wage increase is "another major victory in our fight to deliver justice for the city’s delivery workers."

As well, the delivery workers were called "frontline heroes" by New York State Senator Jessica Ramos. "Throughout the darkest days of the pandemic, and today," she added.

However, the city's own comptroller, Brad Lander, called the decision "watered down" and said that his office calculated that a $12.69 hourly wage was actually more appropriate.

The city said it will work to convert vacant newsstands into shelters for delivery workers and charging stations for electric bicycles and phones.

Florida man allegedly kidnapped, raped DoorDash driver. Victim's family tracked down her phone and rescued her, but not before someone was shot.

A Florida man is accused of kidnapping and raping a DoorDash driver in Tampa, according to police. The family of the victim tracked down her phone and rescued her – but not before someone was shot.

Around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, a DoorDash driver was making a delivery at a Residence Inn hotel in Tampa, Florida. The driver, a woman in her early 20s, exited her vehicle to make the delivery. Suddenly, a man allegedly approached her with a gun and forced her to return to her car.

At gunpoint, the suspect purportedly ordered her to drive to Belara Lakes Apartments. Police say that the man then sexually battered the DoorDash driver.

While the woman was making DoorDash deliveries, she was on the phone with her girlfriend by way of AirPods in her ears. After hearing the kidnapping and the sexual assault over the phone, the girlfriend informed the victim's family that she was in danger. The family contacted the police and then tracked down the location of the woman's phone.

The family rescued the victim, but not before someone was shot.

The Tampa Police Department said in a statement, "The suspect responded by firing multiple times, with one shot striking a family member of the victim’s girlfriend, a female in her 20s, before fleeing the scene."

Both the DoorDash driver and the shooting victim were rushed to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

On Saturday, the Tampa Police Department announced that a suspect in the sexual assault and shooting had been arrested.

Joseph Killins, 38, has been charged with armed kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, armed sexual battery, and aggravated battery with a weapon.

Killins was also hit with another robbery charge for another crime he is accused of committing on Wednesday.

Inside the same apartment complex where Killins allegedly raped the DoorDash driver, the suspect is accused of pushing a woman in her early 40s to the ground. He punched the woman and stole her backpack, according to police.

Killins is being held at the Orient Road Jail.

"This criminal is now off the streets thanks to the tireless efforts of every Tampa Police Department employee and the assistance provided by members of our community," said Lee Bercaw – the interim chief of the Tampa Police Department. "My thoughts remain with the victims. I hope this arrest brings them a sense of comfort knowing that he will now face justice for the crimes he chose to commit."

22-year-old Colorado woman enticed Tinder date, only to duct tape, choke, and stab him – then she ordered food from DoorDash: Police

A 22-year-old Colorado woman is accused of committing several felony crimes against a man she had just met on Tinder. The woman duct-taped the 21-year-old victim, choked him with a belt, stabbed him, and then ordered food from DoorDash, according to police.

Lauren Marie Dooley used the dating app Tinder to entice a man to come to her Colorado Springs apartment on Sept. 28, police say. The two sat on the couch and talked for a while before the man said Dooley took off his clothes and performed oral sex on him.

"She then used duct tape to bind [the victim's] wrists together and ankles together," the affidavit said. "[The victim] found it odd, but consented to it. However, when Lauren produced a kitchen knife and demanded he get into her bedroom, [the victim] no longer consented to staying at the residence."

"Fearing Lauren would harm him with the knife, he obeyed and got into her bed," the affidavit stated. "Lauren climbed on top of him and proceeded to use the knife to cut his left shoulder."

"Lauren then used both her hands to apply direct pressure to [the victim’s] throat for approximately 20 seconds, making it difficult to breath," the affidavit read. "Lauren stopped, but only to procure a belt that she then placed around [the victim’s] neck. She tightened the belt for another 20 seconds, once more making it difficult to breath. When she took it off, she checked [the victim’s] neck for a pulse."

She reportedly forced the Tinder date to the bathtub to clean up the blood from the knife wound. Police said they found blood in the bathtub.

After choking and stabbing the victim, Dooley allegedly ordered food from DoorDash. Before the delivery person dropped off the food, the woman reportedly threatened the victim, "If you scream or say anything, I’ll kill you."

After eating, Dooley got into bed with the victim and fell asleep, according to documents.

"According to the affidavit, the victim said he felt Dooley’s knife under the blanket near his feet, so he somehow used it to cut his bonds," Law & Crime reported. "He accidentally woke Dooley when he bumped into a table, but he was able to get outside and call for help, according to the police."

The naked man ran into the parking lot of the Hill Apartments.

Witnesses claimed that Dooley threatened the victim as she smeared blood on her hands.

The man allegedly told Dooley, "You're going to kill me!"

Local resident Lauri Gloria told KRDO that she saw a naked man bleeding in the parking lot with Dooley nearby.

"It scares me. I mean I saw the gentleman," Gloria said. "He was cut pretty good, and to think that someone could do that is pretty scary."

"Pretty shocking to know somebody that lives right around the corner is capable of doing this," Gloria added. "This is really unexpected. All of our neighbors watch out for each other so I hope nothing like this happens again."

Colorado Springs Police Department officers arrived at the apartment complex around 5:43 p.m. They found the unnamed man bleeding from a laceration on his left arm.

Inside Dooley's apartment unit, police officers found a kitchen knife near the bed and several blood-soaked rags, according to the affidavit.

Dooley was arrested and charged with one felony count each of second-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, and menacing, plus a misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment. Dooley faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Dooley is scheduled to appear in El Paso County court on Oct. 6.
