Gunfire hits commercial airliner near cockpit as plane taxis before takeoff — and shocked passengers speak out

A bullet hit a Southwest Airlines plane near the cockpit as the flight was taxiing for takeoff at Dallas Love Field on Friday night, KXAS-TV reported.

An airport spokesperson told the station the gunfire forced an evacuation of the flight, and KXAS added that Dallas Police are looking for whoever pulled the trigger.

'The fact that it hit so very close to the cockpit seems too much of a coincidence.'

Flight 2494 was struck around 8:30 p.m., KXAS said, citing the Federal Aviation Administration, which added that the plane — which was taxiing for takeoff to Indianapolis — returned to the gate where passengers deplaned.

Police told the station they responded to a shooting call around 9:48 p.m., and no one was hurt.

The runway was temporarily closed Friday night while police conducted their investigation, KXAS added.

A Southwest spokesperson told the station the plane was removed from service.

Police said they're leading the investigation, KXAS reported, adding an FBI airport liaison agent has been assigned to work with police "and other federal partners as deemed necessary."

'A rattle outside of the plane'

The station spoke to Shannon and Jamie Lee who were aboard the flight with two of their children; the couple told KXAS everything seemed normal until they heard the pilot on the loudspeaker.

"He said there's a rattle outside of the plane, and they needed to return back to the gate," Jamie Lee recalled to the station.

The couple told KXAS the pilot said the plane needed to be checked to determine if it was functional — then added that the front of the plane was damaged, and everyone would have to deplane.

The Lees told the station everyone was calm.

"We had no idea that something happened," Shannon Lee told KXAS. "We thought Southwest had missed something in an inspection or something, you know ... a normal mechanical issue."

The couple and their two sons didn't find out about the gunfire until they landed in Indianapolis around 2:30 a.m. and encountered a news crew, the station station said.

“I had my son with me. He was sitting in the window seat. ... And we were just in row 13. So, we were pretty close to the cockpit," Shannon Lee added to KXAS.

While the Lees told the station they're grateful for the way Southwest handled the initial sharing of information with passengers, they believe they should have been told what happened before getting on another flight.

"I was surprised that they had shut the runway, not really knowing if there were potentially other shots being fired or where the shot could have even come from," Jamie Lee told KXAS.

Had they known the plane was shot at, the couple told the station they likely would have gone home that night and delayed their flight another day — or flown out of DFW International Airport instead.

"You have to give people a choice, whether they want to put their safety at risk a second time in one night," Shannon Lee told KXAS.

The Lees added to the station that they want to find out what investigators uncover and what safety improvements may result before walking away from one of their favorite airports and airlines.

"We fly quite a bit ... and ... our kids fly on their own," Shannon Lee told KXAS. "So, it is concerning."

The station said Southwest sent the Lees an email apology as well as a voucher toward a future flight.

'Holy cow'

Armen Kurdian — a retired Navy captain and Naval flight officer — told KXAS his "first thought is like, 'Holy cow, somebody just shot a gun, and it hit a commercial aircraft!"

Kurdian added to the station that investigators will start by figuring out where the bullet came from: "So, what was the orientation of the aircraft when it was actually hit? How deep did the bullet penetrate? That'll tell you what its speed was. And that'll give you an idea of the range from which it was fired."

Kurdian added to KXAS they'll also be looking into whether or not the shot was intentional: "The fact that it hit so very close to the cockpit seems too much of a coincidence. The odds of that happening, I think, got to be really, really high."

He also told the station that the damage could be wide-ranging — from something small like an inoperative light switch to something bigger, such as the GPS system not working.

"Now, if [the bullet] hits something more vital, say like a hydraulic system, then the pilots would be alerted rather quickly that there would be ... a pressure drop in the hydraulic system," Kurdian added to KXAS.

He noted to the station that such airliners have a lot of backup systems, and it's likely a bullet to the cockpit would not have caused a crash — but the whole ordeal presents a security vulnerability.

"Did this put an idea into, say, a non-state or a state actor as, 'Oh, maybe this is something we can do to disrupt air travel'?" Kurdian wondered to KXAS.

He added to the station that it would be wise for the airport and other agencies to look into safety measures.

"So, does it mean random sweeps outside of the airport while flight operations are going on?" Kurdian asked the KXAS. "Does it mean that there [are] going to be more physical barricades or basically physical barriers — not just fences but things that you actually can't see through, concrete — around the airport?"

'Abandoned by the Biden administration': Rep. Cory Mills rescues 10 Americans from nightmare in Haiti

The days Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) served with the Army's 82 Airborne Division and as a defense contractor may be behind him, but he's not letting his corresponding skill set go to waste. The Florida Republican took part in a Monday night rescue of a group of Americans trapped in Haiti, the rudderless Caribbean nation presently in the grips of cannibalistic gangs.

"I am proud to report that my team and I were successful in evacuating and rescuing a trapped, and at risk group of Americans from 'Have Faith Orphanage' in Haiti last night," Mills noted on X.

What's the background?

Haiti was already in rough shape before gangs started torching police stations, massacring civilians, and eating human flesh in broad daylight late last month. After all, the country's president was assassinated in 2021, and criminal elements have since taken full advantage of the resultant power vacuum.

In recent weeks, armed gangs have lain waste to the nation's capital, Port au Prince, and besieged the international airport. They've also taken control of the port and freed well over 4,000 convicts from the country's two biggest prisons, reported the Independent.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry traveled to Kenya in late February to beg for a United Nations-backed security force to stabilize his country. He has since announced he's throwing in the towel and resigning his post, as demanded by Haiti's terroristic gangs.

The State Department has advised Americans to get off the island, but that's now all but impossible.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller reportedly said Monday that Americans unable to leave Haiti should register through the department's crisis intake form on the embassy's website.

The U.S. Embassy in Port au Prince states on its website that it "is not able to facilitate air travel for private citizens."

Mitch Albom, founder of a Haitian orphanage, told WDIV-TV, "There's no planes, no boats, there's no way out, and everything has been shut down by the gangs."

ABC News indicated that the land crossing into the Dominican Republic is similarly a no-go as the route is dominated by gangs.

Not waiting on Biden

Michigan Rep. Lisa McClain (R) told WDIV that she heard about Mitch Albom's troubles getting out of Haiti and reached out to him. Having elsewhere expressed doubt that the Biden administration was up the challenge, McClain reached out to Rep. Cory Mills.

"I said, 'I need your help. My constituents need your help,'" McClain reportedly told Mills.

Sure enough, Mills agreed to lead the rescue mission into the gang-ravaged island.

The Detroit News reported that the Florida Republican put together a crew and secured a helicopter and pilot in the Dominican Republic. After a first attempt was grounded by mechanical issues, Mills secured another chopper, then flew into Haiti, successfully evacuating Albom and nine others.

The 10 evacuees, eight of whom are from Michigan, were safely escorted to the Dominican Republic around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Albom expressed gratitude for the rescue, noting in a statement, "A group of us from Have Faith Haiti, including my wife and myself, were evacuated overnight from Haiti, where we had been sheltering in place since a state of emergency was declared."

"I had a responsibility to bring home 8 wonderful volunteers who were working with us," continued Albom. "But my wife's and my hearts ache for our kids still there. Saying goodbye to them was horribly difficult. We pray for help in making their country safe for them again, and we will be back with them the moment it is possible."

There are apparently 60 children and 40 staff at the orphanage.

McClain announced at an Armed Services Committee Hearing this week, "Last night, I coordinated with Congressman Cory Mills to rescue several Americans trapped in Port Au Prince."

"Congressman Mills actually participated in the rescue of those Americans abandoned by the Biden administration and the State Department," added McClain.

Mills noted on X, "This recent mission reiterates a disturbing reality that under President Biden's leadership American lives are continually jeopardized. I have conducted rescue/ evacs of Americans multiple times when Joe Biden has deserted them. There's a clear pattern of abandonment!"

"Americans at home and abroad are more unsafe under Biden than ever before," continued Mills. "We need President Trump back in the White House as the world can't afford 4 more years of Biden's failed administration."

Mills has a history of stepping in to help stranded Americans ostensibly left behind by the Biden administration.

Amid the Biden administration's botched 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, Mills — then a congressional candidate — reportedly helped another group of Americans get home safely.

Last year, the decorated combat veteran helped rescue scores of Americans who were left stranded in Israel following the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks, including a son of Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Mich.).

Blaze Media employee's husband still stuck in Israel as US government finally announces plan to help evacuate stranded Americans

As Israel wages war in response to heinous Hamas terror attacks that left many dead, some American citizens, including Blaze Media employee Ashton DeGroot's husband and brother-in-law, have been stuck in the Jewish state.

But on Thursday, the U.S. government finally announced plans to help facilitate the evacuation of people stranded in Israel.

DeGroot provided TheBlaze with a copy of a State Department email that her husband received regarding the plans.

"We are writing to update you on U.S. government assistance to depart Israel. We plan to offer transit options beginning on Friday, October 13, but it will take some period of time to schedule everyone seeking to depart. If you choose to take this departure assistance, transportation will be by air to Athens or Frankfurt, or sea from Haifa to Cyprus. You will not be able to choose your destination – we will assign you to the next available flight or ship," the email reads.

"You will be asked to sign an agreement to repay the U.S. government prior to departure. You should be prepared to arrange your own lodging and onward travel from Greece, Germany or Cyprus to your final destination," the email states.

NSC coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby said during a press briefing on Thursday that it is known that 27 Americans have been killed and 14 are unaccounted for.

"Starting Friday, October 13, the U.S. government will arrange charter flights to assist U.S. citizens and their immediate family members who have been unable to book commercial transit and seek a safe means of departing Israel. From these locations, individuals will be able to make their own onward travel arrangements to the destination of their choice. These initial transportation options will be augmented in the coming days," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.

But even before the government's announcement, people had already been filling the vacuum by helping Americans evacuate.

Save Our Allies, a group that was founded during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, has been helping evacuate Americans from Israel, the group's president and founder Tim Kennedy, who is currently a master sergeant with the U.S. Army Special Forces, told TheBlaze.

Kennedy said that in addition to evacuating people from Israel, Save Our Allies is also working to fly medical supplies into the country.

"Hamas is evil," Kennedy said. "Hamas wants all Jews dead."

Hamas has committed atrocities. "Hamas terrorists bound, burned, and executed children," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said. Netanyahu has also said that there were kidnappings, including of children, that families were "wiped out in their beds" and that women were "brutally raped" and killed.

Republican Rep. Cory Mills of Florida has also been helping evacuate people out of Israel.

"If Biden and his administration won't prioritize American lives then I will step up and do his job for him! 77 Americans in 2 days safe and no longer trapped in Israel while Biden thinks of a plan," Mills tweeted. "This is the second country (Afghanistan 2021 & Israel 2023) we've had to save Americans because Biden had no plan and No leadership! This never happened under President Trump!"

Lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle had been pressuring the government to take action to help get Americans out of Israel.

"Since Hamas' indiscriminate attack on Israel Saturday morning, our offices have received harrowing reports from constituents who remain in Israel and are seeking to return to the United States as soon as possible," read an October 10 letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken that was signed by a bipartisan group of more than 100 lawmakers. They called for "the State Department to use all resources at its disposal, including charter flights, to help those Americans that remain in Israel and wish to return to the United States."

HEARTBREAKING: Husband of Blaze Media employee STRANDED in Israel with no way of getting home

Ashton DeGroot is one of Blaze Media’s very own, which is why it’s so important to us that her story is told to as many as possible.

Ashton’s husband Josh, who is a Messianic Jew, works for Christian ministry in Fort Worth, Texas, called Zola Levitt. Josh and his brother were recently asked to go to Israel to film a teaching series, but while they were there, the Hamas attacks began.

Now Josh and his brother are stuck in Israel with no way of knowing how they’re getting home to their anxiously waiting families.

Their flights have been canceled, and there is currently no official plan in place to rescue the thousands of trapped Americans.

“This is the largest mass kidnapping of Americans since the Iran crisis of the 70s, and our administration seems to have basically no opinion on it,” says Stu.

White House strategic communications coordinator John Kirby doesn’t see the problem. In a recent press conference, he stated:

“There are still many viable options for Americans who may want to leave Israel. The airport is still open ... and there's still some viable ground routes, so if people wanted to leave Israel via road, that's still possible as well.”

“I'm offended that that man would have the audacity to lie to the American people,” says Ashton.

“Oh just get a car [and] drive into Jordan, into Iman ... a super friendly country,” she mocks.

Further, “there's about 64,000 people at the Tel Aviv airport also trying to get a flight” with “only 30% of commercial flights leaving.”

“Mexico landed a plane and got their 300 nationals out; the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, [and] Poland” have all flown in and rescued their nationals, Ashton tells Stu.

“Where is America?” she pleads. “I grew up in a time when I believed that when I traveled internationally, my passport meant something, that nobody was gonna mess with somebody who had an American passport because they knew America meant business and they were going to come for you.”

But now, “our people are left stranded in a war zone that they didn’t ask to be a part of ... our people deserve better.”
