Male, 30, allegedly punches 9-year-old girl in face in NYC; he was charged just days prior with punching woman — and released

A 30-year-old male allegedly punched a 9-year-old girl in the face Saturday while she was with her mother in New York City's Grand Central Station. Just days before, cops charged the same suspect — reportedly for punching a woman and breaking her nose, after which authorities soon released him from custody.

What are the details?

Police said the girl and her mom were in the dining concourse at Grand Central just before noon when the suspect — identified as 30-year-old Jean Carlos Zarzuela — punched the girl in the face, WNBC-TV reported.

He got away before the Bronx girl was taken to the hospital, the station said.

The victim suffered from dizziness and pain, WPIX-TV reported, citing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. She's expected to recover, WPIX added.

Police arrested Zarzuela within a few hours, WNBC said. He was charged with assault, WPIX said, adding that the MTA indicated additional charges are pending.

Court records show police arrested Zarzuela about a week before — April 4 — and charged him with assault, WNBC reported, adding that a law enforcement source said Zarzuela randomly punched a 54-year-old woman inside Grand Central and broke her nose.

In that previous case, the source told WNBC a judge set Zarzuela's bail at $2,500 cash, and Zarzuela went to jail — but he went before a different judge April 9 and was released.

A concourse coffee shop worker who arrived at work just after the alleged assault against the girl had some interesting reactions during a WNBC interview.

"My coworkers were, like, 'Oh my God, like, a child got punched today in front of Tartinery,' and I was like, 'Wow, that's terrible, like, who was it?' and it's, like, it's this guy who has given us problems before," she told WNBC.

"He, like, fake, like, swings at people sometimes. But I guess he's, like, actually swinging at people now?" she also told WNBC, adding that "there is a very big, like, mental health crisis here, obviously, and, like, like, the reform for that isn't, you know, gonna just, like, change fast? So, I don't know, it's a very nuanced issue."

“It doesn’t make any sense that this guy — who recently was released after being charged with randomly punching someone else and breaking that victim’s nose — should be back in a public space where he can attack others, especially children,” MTA Communications Director Tim Minton told WPIX. “The people responsible for the criminal justice system need to learn from this episode before more innocent people become victims.”

WPIX's video report called the suspect a "homeless individual."

License-less driver who almost hit girl exiting school bus is in US illegally, drove to ICE office after arrest: Officials

It was bad enough that a van driver nearly hit a girl who was about to exit a school bus last week in Pittstown, New York — and then hit another vehicle before veering off Route 7 and crashing into trees, WRGB-TV reported.

It gets worse.

Turns out that the motorist in question has no driver's license, is in the U.S. illegally — and after his arrest and release on an appearance ticket, he actually drove himself to an ICE office to turn himself in, officials told WNYT-TV.

Say what?

Angel Pandiguana Pachar, 22, was charged with reckless endangerment and reckless driving, WNYT reported, adding that despite investigators saying he's in the country illegally and has no driver's license, Pachar was released on an appearance ticket.

Rensselaer County Sheriff Kyle Bourgault told WNYT that he spoke with ICE and confirmed that Pachar turned himself in to the agency and was being held in Batavia, New York.

What's more, Pachar drove himself to the ICE office, WNYT said, citing authorities.

Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin told WNYT that "if it was up to us, he’d still be sitting in jail. But we are bound by the laws of this state, and the laws of this state are a mess.”

McLaughlin added to WNYT that "we are still amazed [Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul] has not made a statement condemning this incident on Route 7 and acknowledging the life of a young girl was nearly taken because of failed open borders and bail reform policies."

The county executive wasn't through expressing his outrage, as WNYT noted McLaughlin issued formal statement on the matter:

“This is a failure of law, as demonstrated by the information we received that the illegal migrant ignored the fact he had no driver’s license and drove himself to a required appearance with ICE at the local office. It shows a disregard for the safety of others and a disregard for our laws. This is a clear risk to public safety and the failed open borders and bail reform policies need to be repealed immediately."

WNYT noted that Pachar is due in Pittstown Town Court Thursday evening, but it's unlikely he'll appear in court if ICE is holding him.

Anything else?

Just before the 12-year-old girl was about to get off the school bus, Brunswick-Brittonkill bus driver Barry Sullivan stopped her from going out, WNYT said.

Girl, 11, brings box cutter to elementary school, approaches boy from behind, pokes it on his neck and whispers threat: Cops

An 11-year-old girl brought a box cutter to her southwest Florida elementary school Thursday and used it to poke a boy in the neck from behind while whispering a threat to him.

What are the details?

The Collier County Sheriff's Office said the girl faces criminal charges after the incident at Manatee Elementary School, which is in Naples.

The victim reported the incident to school administrators, who then contacted the sheriff's office, authorities said.

Detectives interviewed both students, the sheriff's office said, adding that the victim said the girl approached him from behind in the school cafeteria and poked him in the neck with the knife several times while whispering a threat.

Detectives and the school Youth Relations Deputy reviewed school security footage, which confirmed the victim’s account, the sheriff's office said.

The Youth Relations Deputy searched the girl and found the box cutter hidden in her waistband, the sheriff's office said, adding that she was taken into custody on charges of possession of a weapon on school property and aggravated battery.

How are folks reacting?

Commenters on a Miami Herald story about the incident published by Yahoo News expressed dismay, to say the least:

  • "Society has about 50 years left. It'll get worse every day. Glad I won't be here," one commenter lamented.
  • "I would like to know more about their history," another commenter offered. "There is no excuse to bring a weapon to school and threaten another child. However, if that child had been bullied, and she felt nothing was done, I understand — but it still doesn't make it right."
  • "11 years old. What a heartache to see children this young already heading down this path," another commenter observed. "Bad parenting .... horrible sites on the Internet, gangs? Dark future for so many. Very disturbing. Start praying America. We are in a terrible 'woke' place and desperately need help."
  • "These weapons of war should not be available to the public," another commenter suggested, tongue fully in cheek. "When will Congress pass common-sense box cutter laws?"
  • "Charge her parents, too," another commenter stated.
  • "America, where have you gone?" another commenter wondered. "Take [the] Bible and God out of the schools, and hell comes marching in!"

Video: Mother, 10-year-old daughter repeatedly punched in random attack on Bronx subway train — while multiple people inches away do nothing to help them

An unidentified woman was caught on cellphone video repeatedly punching a mother and her 10-year-old daughter on a subway train in the Bronx while multiple people just inches away did nothing to help them.

What are the details?

Police told WNBC-TV the attack occurred Oct. 18 around 4:30 p.m. WCBS-TV reported that police just released new surveillance images of the suspect.

The 36-year-old mother and her daughter were on their way from from school and standing in a crowded northbound 5 train at the Westchester Avenue and Simpson Street station in the Longwood section, WNBC said.

Police told WNBC that's when the suspect began punching them in the face and mouth. Police said video taken by another passenger shows the woman punching the mother and daughter with a closed fist, WCBS reported.

The mother, who asked not to be identified, told WNBC she doesn't know what sparked the attack.

"She no say nothing to me, just she punch the head like crazy. Boom boom boom. No say nothing to me," the mother told WNBC and added that others on the train saw the attack take place but failed to help them.

The mother added to WNBC she didn't consider fighting back as her only mission was to shield her girl from the stranger's fists.

"Just like make the hug and say, 'No worries, mommy is here, I protect you, no worry,'" the mother added to WNBC.

What happened next?

WNBC said the attacker — described as a woman in her 40s, about about 5 feet 8 inches tall with short black hair, and last seen wearing a black jacket and black sunglasses — soon exited the train and ran off. WCBS added that the attacker is described as weighing about 215 pounds.

The mother and daughter were taken to a hospital where they were treated for their injuries, WNBC said. But the emotional fallout continues, as the mom told WNBC her little girl is still scared when she sees crowds.

Anything else?

An investigation is proceeding, WNBC said, adding that a cash reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. WCBS added that you submit a tip via the NYPD's Crime Stoppers website or via Twitter @NYPDTips and that all tips are kept confidential

Biden requests $2.6 billion from Congress to fund global gender equity programs

President Joe Biden is requesting $2.6 billion to fund gender equity programs across the globe.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, reported The Hill, to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The $2.6 billion will be part of the Biden administration’s 2023 congressional budget request and, if approved, will double the amount requested for gender equity programs last year.

In a prepared statement, Biden said, “On this day and every day, let us recognize that all of us have a better future when women and girls can reach their full potential – and together, let’s renew our efforts to advance dignity, equality, and limitless possibilities for all.”

Biden affirmed that International Women’s Day recognizes the achievements of women and girls and celebrates progress in gender equity. The president also recommitted himself and his administration to work that he says still needs to be done to achieve gender equity.

He said, “Ensuring that every woman and girl has that chance isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s also a strategic imperative that advances the prosperity, stability, and security of our nation and the world. Yet too often, in too many places, women and girls face obstacles that limit their possibilities and undermine their participation in economic, political, and social life.”

Biden stated that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated many existing issues that women face on a regular basis. He suggested that women’s participation in the work force declined, that additional burden was placed upon caregivers, and that gender-based violence increased.

The president’s announcement marks the one-year anniversary of the administration debuting the White House Gender Policy Council.

The White House announced the $2.6 billion over a livestreamed video conference to commemorate International Women’s Day, U.S. News reported.

The conference featured Secretary of State Antony Blinken, acting budget director Shalanda Young, U.S. Agency for International Development administrator Samantha Power, and the director of the Gender Policy Council, Jen Klein.

First lady Jill Biden, who was also present, marked International Women’s Day by making a video tribute to women throughout the world “who courageously use their voice, no matter the cost.”

She said, “To our sisters from Ukraine who are fighting to keep their country free and their families alive: We stand with you in solidarity. To our sister in Russia who are protesting and speaking out against the invasion at great personal risk: We see your courage.”

“And to women warriors around the world, those fighting for justice and working for a change: Thank you for building a better future for all of us,” the first lady added.

Watch: California teen girl shoves bear off wall with her bare hands as it threatens her dogs

A Southern California teenager is receiving global attention after video went viral showing her shoving a mama bear off a wall using her bare hands as the predator threatened her dogs.

What are the details?

Hailey Morinico, 17, was captured on video rushing to save her family's four pet dogs as a mother bear with two cubs in tow sat on a wall in the back yard of her Bradbury home, swatting at the pets as they barked.

The bear was seen in the footage with her two babies walking on top of the barrier when one of Morinico's large dogs ran up barking at the bear. The mama bear swatted at the large dog, and Morinico sprang into action when the bear then started swatting at one of the smaller dogs.

"The dog that the bear grabbed, she's the baby," Morinico told KNBC-TV. "I have to protect the baby."

The teen recalled to the outlet that after she pushed the bear the predator fell back, then "the dog she grabbed ran away and I pick up my other dog and I scram."

The Daily Mail reported that in a TikTok video posted following the incident, Morinico said of the bear, "To be honest I don't think I pushed her that hard, I just pushed her enough to lose her balance."

The teen came out relatively unscathed from the incident, with a sprained finger and a scraped knee.

Morinico's mother posted on Facebook that her daughter "'Just saved our dog with super human strength," describing the scene as, "for me one of the scariest moments in life.'

'She sent the video on our family group chat and I just knew people would think it was crazy so I posted it. We did not expect this much of a reaction though!' her cousin Stephanie Lopez Villalobos, who posted the video of the rescue, told the Daily Mail.

'She's a crazy brave 17 year old!'

NBC News noted that according to experts, "squaring off with a bear should be avoided by humans at all costs."

13-year-old girl killed when carjacker drags her for miles as she tried to escape family vehicle

A 13-year-old girl in Wichita, Kansas, was killed over the weekend, after she tried to escape from her family's vehicle while a suspect was stealing it and the youngster got caught in her seat belt.

Brianna Ibarra was dragged for miles behind the vehicle driven by the alleged carjacker, and did not survive.

What are the details?

Authorities say that Brianna was waiting inside her family's SUV parked outside a restaurant Saturday while other family members went inside to pick up the food. That's when Kevin Palmer, 34, hopped in the driver's seat to steal the vehicle and took off.

Brianna tried to get away by jumping out as the vehicle was moving, according to a witness, who dialed 911 and followed the vehicle, The Daily Mail reported.

According to local outlet KAKE-TV, "Wichita Police received several calls from motorists that a woman was being dragged by a vehicle along Kellogg for several miles."

Law enforcement finally caught up with vehicle and Palmer pulled over. The suspect tried to flee, but he was apprehended by officers. Brianna was pronounced dead at the scene, and Palmer has been charged with felony murder.

Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said of the incident, "This is one of the saddest cases I have been associated with in my over 28 years of law enforcement."

What did the family say?

Brianna's heartbroken family described her as "full of life," and "a beautiful soul." Her parents told KAKE that the "loss of (our) daughter was a tragedy that no family should have to go through."

The girl's older sister, Marissa, described Brianna as someone who "loved to create," was "easy and fun to be around. She was bright, carefree, straightforward, family oriented, strong, would do anything for (her) family, affectionate."

A GoFundMe page has been set up by a family friend to help cover funeral costs "and any expenses needed until this family can get back on their feet and back to work." As of this writing, it has raised more than $17,500 of its $50,000 goal.
