Biden Announces Border Action After Claiming His Hands Were Tied For Years
It's no surprise that after years of standing idly by, Biden is finally taking action just months before the 2024 election.
The number of nationwide gotaways has skyrocketed during President Joe Biden's White House tenure, according to statistics reported by Fox News' Bill Melugin, who indicated that he obtained more than a decade of data via a Freedom of Information Act request.
Some of the numbers include 104,294 for FY 2017; 128,679 for FY 2018; 151,466 for FY 2019; 136,808 for FY 2020; 387,398 in FY 2021; 606,131 in FY 2022; and a whopping 670,674 in FY 2023.
'The most imminent threat to our national security is President Biden's self-inflicted border crisis.'
The federal government's fiscal year runs from October through September. Biden took office in the midst of fiscal year 2021.
"Gotaways occur when cameras or sensors detect migrants crossing the border, but no one is found, or no agents are available to respond," a Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General report noted last year. "Gotaways are observational estimates and rely on agents identifying migrants as crossing illegally and tracking them to the point where they cannot be apprehended; however, an unknown number of migrants evade detection. Therefore, the actual number of 'gotaway' migrants is unknown."
In response to Melugin's tweet, GOP Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart of Florida said in a post on X, "Numbers don't lie. Gotaways have exploded under Biden. We don't know who is coming into our country, where they are, or their intentions. We need to pass H.R.2, the Secure the Border Act, which has been sitting on Schumer's desk for OVER a year now."
"The most imminent threat to our national security is President Biden's self-inflicted border crisis. Not only has he created this unmitigated disaster, but he's actively obstructing states from doing what he refuses to do – secure our border," Republican Rep. Jodey Arrington of Texas declared in a tweet. "No responsible and self-respecting President would allow such brazen disrespect for our laws and our sovereignty. Our country cannot survive another 4 years of this administration, and the only way to change course is for the American people to change our leadership."

Fox News Channel reported that according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection source, there were 919 gotaways on March 31.
"NEW: 919 known gotaways recorded at the border yesterday, per CBP source. 7 day average of known gotaways: 761 per day. Reminder: Gotaways are not recorded in the official public border numbers reported each month. CBP tracks internally after seeing/detecting them," Fox News Channel's Bill Melugin tweeted.
Last month, during an interview with CBS News' Camilo Montoya-Galvez, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens expressed a deep concern about those who slip through the cracks. "That is a national security threat. Border security is a big piece of national security," Owens said.
Responding to Melugin's post, GOP Rep. Eli Crane of Arizona tweeted, "Biden’s premeditated border crisis is a national security disaster. He knows he could reverse course but refuses."
"Border security is national security," GOP Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas said in a tweet. "919 known gotaways in one day = 919 illegal aliens evading screening for terrorism or criminal records in one day. Each day President Biden doesn't take action to secure the border is another day of potential threats to our country."

GOP Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas said in a tweet, "919 known gotaways in one day — none of whom have been screened for criminal conduct or terrorism. And there's no telling how many more went completely undetected. Americans face new and growing threats each day that President Biden refuses to secure our border."
"Make no mistake. The Biden administration's inaction to address the national security crisis at our border will have devastating consequences for years, if not decades, to come," GOP Rep. Mike Collins of Georgia tweeted.

United States Border Patrol chief Jason Owens told CBS News' "Face the Nation" on Sunday that the migrant crisis at the southern border is a "national security threat."
When asked whether smugglers at the border are "setting the rules of engagement," Owens replied, "Yes, they absolutely are. They dictate what the flow is going to look like, and we respond to it."
Owens added, "We try to get out in front of it and deny them the ability to use these areas, especially ones that we think are going to be dangerous for us and for the migrants. But at the end of the day, there's over 1,900 miles of border with Mexico. Now, when you talk about 20,000 Border Patrol agents, that sounds like a lot. But you multiple that by 24 hours a day, seven days a week, across the entirety of the year, that number starts to dwindle very fast."
He explained that the smugglers intentionally manipulate Border Patrol's response by pushing migrant groups to certain areas of the southern border as a distraction.
"The tactic is they'll push groups across, knowing that we're going to respond from a humanitarian perspective and make sure that they're safe. And while we're tied up and occupied doing this, what are [the smugglers] doing a couple miles down the road?" Owens questioned.
He noted that he is "absolutely" concerned about potential terrorists crossing the southern border while agents are bogged down with processing asylum-seekers.
"You ask any law enforcement officer, especially someone who works in border security, that is what keeps us up at night," Owens told CBS News. "We're closing in on a million entries this fiscal year alone. That number is a large number, but what's keeping me up at night is the 140,000 known gotaways."
Gotaways are illegal migrants who have been detected on cameras or sensors but have intentionally evaded being apprehended by law enforcement agents.
Owens noted that the 1 million recorded entries and the 140,000 recorded gotaways do not include illegal migrants who have crossed into the country undetected.
"That is a national security threat," Owens continued. "If we don't know who is coming into our country and we don't know what their intent is, that is a threat. And they're exploiting a vulnerability that's on our border right now."
A recent Congressional Budget Office report estimated that 860,000 illegal migrants entered the country in fiscal year 2023 "without encountering a [Customs and Border Protection] official."
Owens claimed that individuals from at least 160 countries have entered the United States this fiscal year, which started in October. The majority of the illegal migrants are "by and large good people," he added.
"There are still people that we're finding in those groups, though, that have criminal backgrounds, that have been convicted sexual predators, that have been convicted gang members — a very small amount in that population, but they're still there," he said.
Owens called for harsher penalties for illegally crossing into the country.
"I'm talking about jail time. I'm talking about being removed from the country, and I'm talking about being banned from being able to come back because you chose to come in the illegal way instead of the established lawful pathways that we set for you," he stated.
From October through February, agents at the southern border encountered 1,151,448 migrants, according to CBP data.
