Homeless man beats woman to death with a sledgehammer on Christmas Eve at college campus, California police say

A woman who was brutally beaten by a homeless man with a sledgehammer on Christmas Eve has died, according to California police.

The woman in her sixties was walking her dog on the campus of El Camino College when she was attacked at about 7:08 a.m. She was transported to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries a day later, on Christmas day.

El Camino campus police responded to the incident and identified a suspect with the aid of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators said they identified him as Jeffery Davis, a 40-year-old man, from surveillance footage at the college and from previous police interactions with the man.

Investigators described the victim as an Asian woman between 60 and 65 years old. They believe she was collecting recyclable containers from the trash cans on campus and walking her dog at the time of the attack.

El Camino College Police Sgt. Francisco Esqueda said that Davis was booked into the Los Angeles County South LA detention facility on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.

“The person that we had an idea of who was on the security footage is, we believe, a homeless person we’ve had contact with before,” Esqueda said. “So we were able to go to the neighboring county park where he sometimes hangs out and that’s where we found him.”

Residents of the neighborhood were shocked by the attack.

“It’s devastating,” said Leslie Andersen. “It’s gut-wrenching. I’m still in shock. Our dogs became friends so they would play together and we would talk. Just the sweetest woman.”

A witness said that Davis' dog stayed by her side after the attack.

The college serves about 33,000 students. It was on winter break at the time of the horrific incident.

Taco Bell manager murdered by homeless employee he let stay at his apartment, police say

A Taco Bell manager tried to help a homeless employee by letting him stay at his apartment, but the vagrant repaid him by murdering him, Illinois police said.

27-year-old Louis Stafford was the manager of the Chesterfield Township Taco Bell when he noticed one of his employees was arriving for work with wet clothing.

When he asked 24-year-old Dejon Drake why his clothes were wet, Drake told him he was homeless.

"The guy told him that he was basically living in a tent behind the Taco Bell. Louis said, 'Hey, you don’t have to be out there. You can come stay with me,'" said Stafford's cousin Zonni Juan to WXYZ-TV.

Juan said that Stafford invited Drake to live at his apartment but that the situation quickly soured when Drake became combative.

"The people at his job became afraid of him," said Juan. "He started getting really combative and they were like ‘We’re going to fire him.’ Louis just kept stepping in, kept trying to advocate for him."

On July 29, Stafford asked Drake to move out of his apartment, and a fight broke out. Drake then allegedly shot and killed Stafford.

Drake was arrested and booked into Macomb County Jail. He was charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm possession and given a $2 million cash bond.

Juan suggested that the tragedy might have been avoided if there was better mental illness care.

"He was the type of young man that you would look at him and say, one day he’s going to make someone a really great husband, he’s gonna make someone a good father,'" said Juan of Stafford.

Stafford's family said that he had just been getting his life back together after his brother died from complications with COVID-19 and diabetes. He had also been previously shot three times during a robbery when he worked at a McDonald's restaurant.

Florida man kills a homeless man at an encampment over dispute about masturbation, police say

A man has been arrested for allegedly killing another homeless man in a Florida encampment over his public masturbatory habits, police said.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a media briefing that police were called to a homeless encampment in Winter Haven where they found a body buried in a shallow grave in the Eloise jungle, or encampment.

He says that police also saw a man who ran away after they gave chase about the same time. That man was identified as Robert Simmons, 42, also known as "Mexico," and witnesses said he had previously gotten into an altercation with the 39-year-old victim.

"This is one bad hombre. He's mean. He's been in prison four times," said Judd. "He's got a lot of criminal charges, everything from misdemeanors, to felonies, to violent felonies. And he put our victim in the grave."

Judd said the victim had also been in prison eight times. Judd says witnesses told police that Simmons beat up and injured the man after catching him masturbating in public in the encampment. A later time he caught him again and allegedly murdered the man and buried him.

Judd says that police searched for Simmons for 18 hours before "pushing" him out of the Eloise woods and capturing him.

When Simmons was asked about the charges by a reporter as he was led out by police, he denied that he killed the man but admitted that he got into an altercation with him.

"No ma'am," said Simmons when asked if he killed the victim. "I got into it with him, I got into a fight with him. But I definitely didn't kill that man. But it's easy to accuse somebody who's already been in trouble for a lot.

Judd pointed out that the suspect had exhibited many mosquito bites from hiding in the swamp from police.

"I'm telling you right now, there are mosquitoes the size of bald eagles in that dadgum swamp, it is a rough rough rough area," Judd added.

Simmons was on probation at the time of his arrest, and he was charged with second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and resisting.

Man randomly stabbed in the neck while walking down the street on video call with his brother. LAPD says the killer is a homeless man.

Los Angeles police have arrested a homeless man as a suspect in the unprovoked and random stabbing death of a man who was simply walking down the street on a video chat with his brother.

The harrowing incident unfolded on April 8 at about 2:40 p.m. as Sergio Santay was walking down the 600 block of Bonnie Brae Street near downtown Los Angeles, California.

The LAPD said another man walked up to Santay as he was video chatting with his brother and stabbed him in the neck. The suspect ran off after the vicious assault but tried to stab two other people on the way, according to police.

Santay died at the scene. The others who were attacked were not seriously injured.

Police said that they had obtained surveillance video of the suspect stabbing the victim. From that video, they identified the suspect as 43-year-old Anthony Madison, who they said was a homeless man.

Police said Madison was known to frequent the area of the attack and that he had been previously arrested on charges of narcotics sales and assault with a deadly weapon. They also indicated that he had been on parole for the latter charge when he allegedly attacked Santay.

“He was talking to me on FaceTime. He was very happy about his day, telling me about work,” said Douglas Santay, the victim's brother, in Spanish to KTLA.

Madison was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. His bail was set at $5 million.

The victim's father, Emilio Santay, said that his son was a construction worker and was just leaving work when he was attacked. The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the victim's funeral costs.
