25 years after a Central American hurricane, Noem's DHS to end associated immigration Temporary Protected Status

In late October 1998, Hurricane Mitch tore through Central America on its way to Southern Florida and the Bahamas. It left destruction and thousands of people dead. In early 1999, the Clinton administration granted Temporary Protected Status to immigrants from two of those Central American countries. Over the last quarter-century, those protections have been extended several times.

Now, those deportation protections for Honduran and Nicaraguan nationals are in the crosshairs of Kristi Noem's Department of Homeland Security as the Trump administration continues to clamp down on the national immigration crisis.

'Temporary Protected Status was designed to be just that — temporary.'

The DHS is moving to revoke Temporary Protected Status for certain Honduran and Nicaraguan nationals living in the U.S., which was set to expire on July 5, according to unpublished Federal Register notices.

"After reviewing country conditions and consulting with appropriate U.S. Government agencies, the Secretary determined that" both of the countries do not "meet the conditions for designation for TPS," the notices read.

Honduran and Nicaraguan nationals residing in the U.S. will lose TPS 60 days after the notice is published in the Federal Register, which has not yet occurred as of Monday morning.

The DHS explained that Honduras and Nicaragua were initially granted TPS in 1999 following Hurricane Mitch, which caused at least 10,000 fatalities in Central America.

In the case of Nicaragua, the federal government extended TPS "13 consecutive times (for periods of 12 or 18 months at a time) under the same statutory basis of environmental disaster." The agency added that TPS was also "continuously extended" for Honduras.

Trump's DHS cited the countries' notable progress, such as hurricane recovery and growing tourism, as some of the reasons why they no longer meet the designation requirements.

The DHS' order is expected to impact 72,000 Honduran nationals and 4,000 Nicaraguan nationals currently living in the U.S.

Noem told Fox News Digital, "Temporary Protected Status was designed to be just that — temporary."

"It is clear that the government of Honduras has taken all of the necessary steps to overcome the impacts of Hurricane Mitch, almost 27 years ago," Noem said.

"Honduran citizens can safely return home, and DHS is here to help facilitate their voluntary return," she continued. "Honduras has been a wonderful partner of the Trump administration, helping us deliver on key promises to the American people. We look forward to continuing our work with them."

A DHS source told Fox News Digital, "The impacts of a natural disaster impacting Nicaragua in 1999 no longer exist."

"The environmental situation has improved enough that it is safe enough for Nicaraguan citizens to return home. This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that TPS remains temporary," the source added.

In late June, Noem announced that the DHS would revoke TPS for 500,000 Haitian nationals. A rogue federal judge moved to block the administration's actions despite the Supreme Court limiting the scope of district courts' universal injunctions.

'Self-deport' flights begin as some illegal migrants take advantage of Trump's tempting offer: Report

Dozens of illegal aliens made their way home on Monday as part of a new push by the Trump administration to have migrants illegally in the country show themselves out, Axios reports.

Citing an unnamed Department of Homeland Security official, Axios claimed that the first so-called "self-deportation" flight took off from Houston around 9:30 a.m. The plane reportedly carried 65 illegal aliens from Colombia and Honduras and took the individuals to their respective countries of origin.

'If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to leave the United States.'

Those on the flight apparently took advantage of an offer from the Trump administration known as "Project Homecoming." In exchange for electing to "self-deport" through the CBP Home app, they each received a free ticket home plus $1,000 upon their arrival, Axios said.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has urged all immigrants in the U.S. illegally to participate in the program. "If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest," Noem said in a statement on May 5.

Those who voluntarily step forward on the app and make "meaningful strides in completing" their departure may have the opportunity to return to the U.S. someday. They will also avoid arrest and perhaps lengthy pre-deportation detention.

"In principle, [self-deporting] could be a very good option for people," said Michelle Brané, President Joe Biden's executive director of the Family Reunification Task Force.

"If people are not being coerced, are fully informed, and if it actually is a safe option that preserves people's rights, it could be a successful program," she told Axios.

'Deport. Them. All.' Illegal alien faces new charges related to 'gruesome' murder of Georgia mom — including necrophilia

An illegal alien accused of brutally murdering a Georgia mother of five earlier this month now faces several new charges, including for allegedly performing sexual acts on his victim's corpse.

"David Hector Rivas-Sagastume, an illegal alien RELEASED by the Biden administration, has been charged with killing Camilia [sic] Williams, a mother of five and a grandmother in a gruesome attack," the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement. "This illegal alien should have NEVER been in our country in the first place."

A DHS spokesman confirmed to the Daily Caller that Rivas-Sagastume, 21, stole into the United States on March 17, 2021, then was paroled into the country.

"A judge ordered him removed on July 11, 2023," continued the spokesman. "On March 18, 2025, he was being arrested by the Cobb County Police Department for capital murder and other crimes. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer with the Cobb County Jail."

Arsene Williams, the victim's brother, told WAGA-TV, "In March 2025, my sister lost her life because the system failed to deport him after they had him in custody."

Cobb County Police officers were dispatched at 8:25 a.m. on March 13 to a residential area in Marietta, Georgia, following the discovery of 52-year-old Camillia Williams' body in roadside bushes. Following a days-long investigation, authorities identified Rivas-Sagastume as the likely killer, charging him with felony murder and aggravated assault.

'Deportation is not enough, GIVE HIM THE DEATH PENALTY!'

The arrest warrant alleges that Rivas-Sagastume physically assaulted Williams, rendered her unconscious by way of a chokehold, then knelt on her neck until she was dead, reported WAGA.

"He was kind of stalking her, waiting for her to be by herself, then he strangled her," said Arsene Williams.

Rivas-Sagastume, who allegedly dumped Williams' body in the Atlanta suburb, has since been charged with malice murder, aggravated sexual battery, and necrophilia.

Responding to the updated charges, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) wrote, "These are the folks the Left are defending. Deport. Them. All."'

"In Georgia, we are mourning the tragic and completely avoidable murder of another Georgia woman because of Democrat's [sic] open border and cartel first policies!" tweeted Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R). "Deportation is not enough, GIVE HIM THE DEATH PENALTY!"

Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement, "Those who commit acts of violence against our people will face the full weight of our justice system, and if they are here illegally, we will not hesitate to work with our federal partners to ensure their removal from our state and country."

Last year, Kemp ratified legislation requiring law enforcement agencies in the state to notify federal authorities when illegal aliens are arrested. Last month, the Georgia Senate passed a bill that would enable local government officials and authorities in so-called sanctuary cities to be held civilly liable for crimes committed by noncitizens.

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, Cobb County is not a sanctuary county. However, upon taking office in 2021, Democratic Sheriff Craig Owens ended the county's 287(g) partnership with federal authorities, which ICE claims "enhances the safety and security of our nation's communities by allowing ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) to partner with state and local law enforcement agencies to identify and remove criminal aliens who are amenable to removal from the U.S."

The Center for Immigration Studies noted, "Simply honoring detainers is not the same as being a proactive partner with federal law enforcement."

The Daily Caller indicated that the Cobb County Sheriff's Office did not respond to its request for comment regarding whether it intends to honor the detainer request placed on Rivas-Sagastume.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem noted, "This illegal alien should have never been in our country in the first place. President Trump and I are putting the safety of Americans FIRST."

Gang member with criminal history arrested after previously being removed from US 6 times: ICE

Authorities arrested a Honduran who was previously removed from the U.S. half a dozen times, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The gang member, who was arrested on February 1 after illegally entering the U.S. near Newport, Vermont, has a significant criminal record, the ICE press release indicated.

"The Honduran national was removed from the United States in January 2006, twice in June 2013, February 2015, July 2015 and February 2016. He has been convicted of DWI, assault and battery, unauthorized use of a vehicle, illegal entry, disorderly conduct and drug trafficking. During an immigration hearing, he admitted he was affiliated with the Sicarios New Yorkers-XV-18 branch of the 18th Street Gang," ICE noted.

"In October 2022, a Honduran court convicted him of drug trafficking charges and sentenced him to four years and six months of incarceration. After he failed to appear to serve his sentence in July 2023, the court issued a warrant for his arrest," the press release noted. "The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) again arrested the gang member Feb. 1, 2024, after he unlawfully entered the United States near Newport, Vermont, without being inspected, admitted or paroled by a designated immigration official."

The arrest demonstrates the importance of border security for the sake of public safety.

Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens has noted that authorities recently arrested a Mexican man who had served time for molestation of a minor. "USBP agents in Laredo, TX arrested another child predator trying to enter our country illegally. This subject, a Mexican National, served 10 yrs in prison for a Molestation of a Minor, a felony conviction," Owens' tweet stated.

San Francisco's Honduran Drug Dealers Are Building Mansions Back Home: Report

Police arrest 28-year-old immigrant who allegedly posed as teenager to attend high school for entire year

Police arrested a 28-year-old immigrant they claim fraudulently attended a Louisiana high school.

Last month, school administrators at Hahnville High School received a tip that a woman in her mid-20s was attending the school by posing as a 17-year-old teenager. The school began an investigation and notified the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office on May 29.

The investigation led police to arrest 28-year-old Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano and her mother, 46-year-old Marta Elizeth Serrano-Alvarado. Police allege Serrano-Alvarado successfully enrolled her adult daughter in the school "using a fraudulent passport and birth certificate" from Honduras.

While it's not clear how school officials were tipped off, police said that Gutierrez-Serrano attended Hahnville High School as a freshman for the entirety of the 2022-2023 school year.

"Gutierrez-Serrano was not involved in any extracurricular activities, and we are not aware of any disciplinary issues while attending school. She utilized school transportation to and from school. There is no current evidence of any other criminal activity or inappropriate conduct by either Serrano-Alvarado or Gutierrez-Serrano," police explained in a statement.

At a news conference on Wednesday, St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne revealed Gutierrez-Serrano attended the school because she "wanted to learn English. She wanted to become proficient in the English language."

"There was no nefarious reason behind this," he explained.

Regarding the immigration status of the women, Champagne explained at the press conference that Serrano-Alvarado was living in the U.S. on an expired visa, while Gutierrez-Serrano entered the U.S. through New Mexico in 2021. She was released by immigration authorities after processing, which is routine procedure for immigrants who claim asylum.

Champagne said he saw the photo that immigration authorities snapped of Gutierrez-Serrano before releasing her, observing that she could "very easily be taken for a young teenager — without a doubt."

"It's not the crime of the century," he said. "We're not here to bang on these people. The purpose of getting an education, learning English, is something we want everybody to do. But you can't defraud the government, and you can't enroll in a school if you're 10 years over the age that is allowed."

Police charged both women with one count of injuring public records. They were released from jail on bond.
