Bluesky founder reboots Vine for AI-free social media — as human-only video becomes 'nostalgic'

Jack Dorsey is bringing the nostalgia back, just a few seconds at a time.

Dorsey co-founded Twitter in 2007 and served as its inaugural CEO for a year until returning to the position for a six-year stint in its seemingly darkest years between 2015 and 2021.

Now, through his nonprofit called and Other Stuff, Dorsey is bringing one of the internet's most beloved applications back from the dead.

'Can we do something that takes us back, that lets us see those old things ...'

"So basically, I'm like, can we do something that’s kind of nostalgic?" said Evan Henshaw-Plath, Dorsey's pick to spearhead the revival. The New Zealander comes from Dorsey's nonprofit team, where he is known as Rabble, and has outlined aspirations to bring the internet vibe back to its Web 2.0 time period — roughly 2004-2010 or thereabouts.

Dorsey and Henshaw-Plath are rebooting Vine, the six-second video app that predominantly served viewers short, user-generated comedy clips. The format is a clear inspiration for modern apps like TikTok and formats like YouTube's Shorts and Instagram's Reels.

Dorsey and company are focused on keeping the nostalgic feel, however, and unlike the other apps, will keep a six-second time limit while also taking a stance on content. What that means, according to Yahoo, is that the platform will reject AI-generated videos using special filters meant to prevent them from being posted.

i loved vine. i found it pre-launch, pushed the company to buy it (i wasn’t ceo at the time), and they did great. but over time https://t.co/HNsCMGtS04 (tiktok) took off, and and the founders left, leaving vine directionless. when i came back as ceo we decided to shut it down…
— jack (@jack) April 11, 2024

The new app, called diVine, will revive 10,000 archived Vine posts, after the new team was able to extract a "good percentage" of some of the most popular videos.

Former Vine users are able to claim their old videos, so long as they can prove access to previously connected social media accounts that were on their former Vine profiles. Alternatively, the users can request that their old videos be taken down.

"The reason I funded the nonprofit and Other Stuff is to allow creative engineers like Rabble to show what's possible in this new world," Dorsey said, per Yahoo.

This will be done by "using permissionless protocols which can't be shut down based on the whim of a corporate owner," he added.

Henshaw-Plath commented on returning to simpler internet times — as silly as it sounds — when a person's content feed only consisted of accounts he follows, with real, user-generated content.

"Can we do something that takes us back, that lets us see those old things, but also lets us see an era of social media where you could either have control of your algorithms, or you could choose who you follow, and it's just your feed, and where you know that it's a real person that recorded the video?" he asked.

RELATED: Twitter announces the demise of video-sharing app Vine, internet weeps (2016)

According to Tech Crunch, Vine was acquired by Twitter in 2012 for $30 million before eventually shutting down in 2016.

The app sparked careers for personalities like Logan Paul, Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor, and John Richard Whitfield, aka DC Young Fly. Bachelor and Whitfield captured the genre that was most popular on the platform: eccentric young performers who published unique comedy.

DiVine is currently in a beta stage and is available only to existing users of the messenger app Nostr.

X owner Elon Musk announced in August that he was trying acquire access to Vine's archive so that users could post the videos on his platform.

"We recently found the Vine video archive (thought it had been deleted) and are working on restoring user access, so you can post them if you want," Musk wrote.

However, it seems the billionaire may have been beaten to the punch by longtime rival Dorsey.

JFK's grandson launches congressional bid to replace Jerry Nadler

Another member of the Kennedy political dynasty is launching a high-profile campaign, and this time it's for Congress.

Jack Schlossberg, former President John F. Kennedy's 32-year-old grandson, announced his congressional campaign to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York. Schlossberg originally rose to political stardom on TikTok, where, like many of his relatives, he would criticize and mock Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

'With control of Congress, there's nothing we can't do.'

Schlossberg will be entering a crowded primary race alongside state Assemblyman Micah Lasher and nonprofit CEO Liam Elkind. These candidates are looking to represent New York's 12th congressional district, which is one of the most Democratic districts in the state and boasts one of the highest incomes per capita in the country.

On his campaign website, the Kennedy heir said he launched his congressional bid because "the best part of the greatest city on earth needs to be heard loud and clear in Washington and deserves a representative who won't back down."

In his campaign announcement, Schlossberg also emphasized his ambition for Democrats to take back control of the House. Republicans currently hold a historically narrow advantage in the House, partially due to two Democratic vacancies following the deaths of Reps. Sylvester Turner of Texas and Raul Grijalva of Arizona.

"We deserve better, and we can do better," Schlossberg said. "And it starts with the Democratic Party winning back control of the House of Representatives."

Notably, Schlossberg is running to replace a Democrat in a deep-blue district, meaning the partisan split in the House will be unaffected by his candidacy.

"With control of Congress, there's nothing we can't do," Schlossberg said. "Without it, we're helpless to a third term."

"My name is Jack Schlossberg, and I'm running for Congress to represent my home: New York's 12th congressional district, where I was born and raised."

Suspect tries to flee Phoenix police by leaping rooftop to rooftop. When that fails, he tries to outrun a K-9 unit.

A suspect took a police chase to the rooftops of Phoenix Tuesday evening. Despite some bold moves, he was ultimately brought down by gravity and a particularly eager K-9 unit.

Police indicated in a statement obtained by KSAZ-TV that Jamie Chavira's downfall Tuesday began when he allegedly failed to stop his vehicle for police in the area of 38th Avenue and Mobile Lane.

"The vehicle failed to yield to a traffic stop and felony flight was established," said the statement. "Officers did not initiate a pursuit of the vehicle. Rather, it was tracked to the area of 35th Avenue and Roeser Street."

Chavira, 19, was reportedly seen in the area jumping into the back yard of several homes as well as climbing onto a number of rooftops.

Christelle Kouam Chuene was at home with her three sleeping children when she heard the commotion.

Chuene told KSAZ, "When I looked out my window, I saw somebody jumping house to house. ... I saw him jumping from one house to the other one. It was so crazy. It was really cray and scary."

"I just saw the guy jumping like a monkey," she added. "He seems like he knew what he was doing."

Evidently, Chavira didn't know how to do it successfully.

The final moments of the chase were captured by Chuene's Ring doorbell camera.

The footage shows the shirtless suspect illuminated by a helicopter's search light atop the roof of a West Phoenix home near 35th Avenue and Roeser Road. Several officers can be seen closing in below with nonlethal weapons at the ready.

Undaunted by what appears to be a gap at least 10 feet wide, Chavira leaps toward the neighboring roof. Lacking the luck and grace necessary to traverse the divide, he lands between the houses.

Though grounded, Chavira is not yet willing to surrender. Instead, he pushes aside the blue bin that helped break his fall and makes a mad dash past police, through a hail of nonlethal rounds, and across the driveway of the neighboring house. Again, he is thwarted by his own ineptitude.

This time, he loses his footing, stumbles, then finds himself fighting the jaws of the law.

A K-9 unit got its teeth into what appears to be his hand. It thrashes its fleshy ransom until police officers are able to make the arrest.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, Chavira was charged with two counts of transportation violations and at least one count of criminal trespass and burglary. KSAZ indicated he has also been charged with resisting arrest.

Following his arrest, he was taken to a hospital to be treated for a dog bite, according to police.

Left-wing NJ Gov. Phil Murphy yells 'It's my money!' to crowd, reportedly about taxpayer-funded school development project

New Jersey's left-wing Gov. Phil Murphy hollered, "It's my money!" to a crowd reportedly regarding a taxpayer-funded school development project — a public pronouncement that flew far under the media radar late last month.

What are the details?

Murphy came to the New Jersey town of West New York on April 29 to support Democrat Albio Sires for mayor. Sires in January ended his 10-year run as a U.S. House member for the state, and he was mayor of West New York before then. West New York is directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan.

Sires' team in March announced his desire for a new middle school in town, the Hudson County View reported. The New Jersey Schools Development Authority approved the project, and Sires' team said the state allocated $65 million toward it, the outlet added.

During his speech backing Sires, Murphy said the funding for the school project is "my money," the Hudson County View reported in a separate story: ”Remember one thing when anyone says otherwise; tell ’em Murphy said the following: It’s my money, and that’s how it’s gonna be spent!”

““IT’S MY MONEY!”

Remember when Phil Murphy said, “If taxes are your issue, we’re probably not your state”? You were thinking it couldn’t get any worse, right?? Well, it just did. Check out this video.

Seems to Governor is still tone deaf when it comes to OUR tax dollars.”
— Jack Ciattarelli (@Jack Ciattarelli) 1683303941

'King Philip strikes again'

Former state Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli — who lost to Murphy for governor in a tight 2021 race — took issue with Murphy's words.

Besides his above tweet, Ciattarelli on Tuesday tweeted, "King Philip strikes again. Now he said our tax dollars are 'his money.' Not a joke, Murphy said the state budget is, 'my money & that’s how it’s going to be spent.' Who says that? Let’s give Republicans control of the legislature so we can stop Murphy from spending OUR money!"

“King Philip strikes again. Now he said our tax dollars are "his money." — Jack Ciattarelli (@Jack Ciattarelli) 1683051194

Republican state Senator Ed Durr said in a statement that "this slush fund mentality that’s shared by Governor Murphy and the Democrat insiders who have ruled the Legislature for two decades is exactly why New Jersey has the highest tax burden in the nation for families and businesses,” the Hudson County View added.

West New York Public Affairs Commissioner Cosmo Cirillo — who's also running for mayor of West New York — told the outlet, “It’s not Murphy’s money, it’s our money. The people’s money. I have knocked on thousands of doors throughout this campaign, unlike my main opponent."

Woman of prominent Virginia family accused of sending child porn and attempting to sex traffic little girl, ex-husband federal judge wants full custody of young daughters

A woman of a prominent Virginia family has been accused of distributing child pornography and attempting to sex traffic minors. The woman's ex-husband – who is a federal judge – has demanded that he get full custody of the couple's young daughters.

Eleanor Hunton Hoppe of Charlottesville allegedly sent child porn to an undercover government agent.

In February, Hoppe started chatting online with an undercover agent on an unnamed "fetish website," according to court documents.

The mother of two is accused of sending the agent a 30-second video and three still images of young, underage girls being sexually abused by men.

Hoppe allegedly "verified" her identity by sending a photo of her partial face with herself giving thumbs with one of her breasts exposed.

During the reported month-long communication, she allegedly told the agent that she was interested in "taboo parenting."

The agent allegedly told Hoppe that he had an 8-year-old daughter. After hearing about the alleged sexual abuse the man had committed against his fictional daughter, Hoppe reportedly said that she wanted to cross state lines to meet the child at a hotel in Warrenton, Virginia.

WRIC-TV reported, "Prior to the arranged date, Hoppe allegedly said that she would bring a pink silk robe for the child, sending a photograph and writing, 'Her big girl robe for tonight.'"

According to the complaint, Hoppe told the undercover agent, "I can't wait and then of course, putting her to bed and waking her up to do a few extra things will be so fun."

Before the meetup, Hoppe allegedly wrote to the undercover agent, "If I were you, I'd start building up Thursday telling her that you know it's gonna be super fun we're gonna hang out with an old friend of yours."

On March 20, Hoppe allegedly went to the hotel to meet the undercover agent and was arrested. According to court documents, Hoppe told FBI agents that she arranged the meeting "in order to help [the agent’s] child."

Law enforcement reportedly found a pink silk robe inside Hoppe's car.

The 45-year-old mother was charged with the distribution of child pornography and attempted child sex trafficking. If convicted, the child sex crime charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and up to life in prison.

On April 4, Hoppe pleaded not guilty to the two charges against her.

Hoppe is a member of a prominent Virginia family.

"She is the granddaughter of Eppa Hunton IV, who led Hunton and Williams, now Hunton Andrews Kurth, the second-largest law firm in the state," according to Axios.

The Daily Mail reported that Hoppe's ex-husband is a magistrate judge at United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. Following the arrest of Eleanor, Joel Hoppe has reportedly demanded full custody of the former couple's two daughters, aged 10 and 12.

During the divorce proceedings, the 46-year-old judge accused his wife of cheating and bringing a sexual partner to their marital home with their young daughters present.

The mother reportedly worked in child advocacy.

'I will kill you': Journalist attacked and threatened by alleged CBS crew member outside Trump arraignment in NYC

A popular video journalist was attacked and threatened by a crew member allegedly working for CBS outside Donald Trump's arraignment in New York City.

The man, described as a sound man for CBS by the Post Millennial, is seen on video grabbing the independent journalist, Oren Levy, by the collar and saying "Don't ever f*** with me!"

As the two men are separated, the man yells at Levy, "I will kill you," followed by relatively inaudible expletives.

“This guy who attacked me is named David Forde. He's a sound guy for CBS News. Looks Like CBS News Sent him 2 lawyers to tell him what to say . He's now claiming his injured 🤡”
— Viral News NY (@Viral News NY) 1680646592

"I was filming George Santos in a media scrum and got caught in the middle," Levy told Blaze Media.

"After the guy told Santos he would be his 'judge and jury,' he said to me 'coffee in the middle of a sprint?' and then tried to start intentionally spilling my coffee," Levy explained.

Right before the attack, Levy says he asked the man, "Can you please chill?"

The day following the events, Levy posted a video that seems to corroborate his story. Santos asks, "Is anybody accusing me of something?" A man who appears to be right next to Levy responds to Santos, "Not yet."

"Are you judge and jury?" Santos replies, with the man again responding, "Yeah, as a [inaudible] in New York, I will be."

At the end of the video the same man can be heard saying "Dude, really? Coffee in the middle of a sprint?"

“Seconds before, the guy attacked me yesterday. He was yelling at @RepSantosNY03 and then started complaining about my coffee and tries to make me spill it.
You can hear him say to Santos he will be the judge and jury. And him saying something about my coffee.
For licensing…”

Jay Dow, a correspondent for New York outlet WPIX-TV, claimed in a Twitter post that the incident was spawned by Levy calling the man the N-word.

"What that cell phone did not record was that the guy put his elbow in Dave’s chest and called him the N-word - with a hard GGER," Dow claimed.

"That's a bold claim Jay," Levy replied.

"I see you work for pix 11 . You probably should look me up and see I would never say that. But have him release that since his mic was on," Levy added, while responding in another post saying "that's something I would never do."

A spokesperson for CBS-2/CBS News New York stated that "we do not have any reporters by that name," when asked if the attacker in question, who has been identified on Twitter, worked for CBS-2/CBS News New York.

When asked if it was a sound engineer or crew member, the spokesperson repeated that there are no reporters with that name at the outlet.

Anti-gun protesters storm Tennessee state Capitol, attempt to shove past troopers — media claims, 'This was a peaceful protest'

Anti-gun protesters overwhelmed the Tennessee state Capitol on Thursday morning to call for stricter gun control measures following the shooting at the Covenant School earlier this week, during which a transgender individual murdered three nine-year-old children and three adults.

Hundreds of protesters overwhelmed the state's Capitol on Thursday, demanding the Republican-majority legislature enact tighter gun laws. The demonstrators filled the steps outside the building, the hallways, and the legislative session chambers, shouting, "Save our children!"

Most protesters gathered in the Senate chamber's gallery were removed after they began yelling down at the lawmakers, "Children are dead!"

A video from the incident captured protesters attempting to shove past a group of Tennessee State Troopers. One male demonstrator was pulled from the group of protesters and temporarily detained by authorities.

The crowd then chanted for law enforcement to release the male protester.

"Give him back!" The group shouted.

The troopers ultimately allowed the protester to rejoin the crowd.

“I deleted the last tweet because I wasn’t as clear. This was a peaceful protest. Students, parents and their supporters went through Capitol security to lobby for gun control in the Capitol. No one was arrested. This shoving started when THP needed to make way for lawmakers.”
— Kelsey Gibbs (@Kelsey Gibbs) 1680201705

The video was initially shared on Twitter by WTVF news reporter Kelsey Gibbs. In a now-deleted tweet, Gibbs wrote, "Emotions outside the House Chambers are still high. Protesters are wanting to talk to lawmakers as they run to bathroom. This young person was briefly detained but let go."

Gibbs reposted the video later and stated, "I deleted the last tweet because I wasn't as clear. This was a peaceful protest. Students, parents and their supporters went through Capitol security to lobby for gun control in the Capitol. No one was arrested. This shoving started when THP needed to make way for lawmakers."

Twitter users slammed Gibbs and the corporate media for favorably reporting Thursday's Tennessee rally as a "peaceful protest" after the same left-leaning outlets labeled the January 6 protest at the U.S. Capitol an "insurrection."

One user replied to Gibbs, "People spent two years in solitary confinement for less than that."

"A mostly peaceful protest is underway in the Tennessee Capitol," commentator Ian Miles Cheong sarcastically wrote. "The reporter deleted the original tweet with this video because viewers correctly identified it as an 'insurrection' (per definitions provided by the media and Congress)."

Another video from the protest captured demonstrators in the legislative chambers chanting down to lawmakers, "No action, no peace" and "enough is enough."

Two Democratic lawmakers temporarily shut down the session after some protesters began yelling through a megaphone.

According to WTVF, Thursday's protest was led by parents and community groups, including the Metro Nashville Public Schools Parents, ForwardTN, East Nashtivists, the Equity Alliance, and Third Man Records.

One of the protest organizers, Maryam Abolfazli, told WKRN, "We're here because we still believe that we can make change. We can. It's a tough state, I get it."

McCarthy shuts down CNN reporter's question with serious accusation against the network: 'That was a real concern'

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy defended on Tuesday his decision to give Tucker Carlson the Jan. 6 tapes, fiercely responding to a CNN reporter who questioned him.

CNN reporter Manu Raju asked McCarthy whether he regrets giving Carlson the tapes, accusing the Fox News host of using the footage to "whitewash" what happened on Jan. 6, 2021. McCarthy was clear that he does not.

"No," the California Republican responded.

"I said at the very beginning, 'Transparency.' And so what I wanted to produce for everybody is exactly what I said, people can actually look at it and see what's gone on that day," he explained.

When the reporter asked McCarthy if he agrees with Carlson's reporting, McCarthy responded, "Each person can come up with their own conclusion."

That's when McCarthy zeroed in on CNN for allegedly exposing the secret location where congressional leadership fled on Jan. 6.

"I just wanted to make sure I had transparency, because I know on CNN, I mean, I had here where you guys actually wrote where we were," McCarthy said. "This was a secret location: Fort McNair. I don’t know if you got concerned by that. I don't even know from a point of view of security if we could ever be taken there again.

"But when you broke that at CNN, that was a real concern to a lot of people," he added, referring to transparency in media.

Interestingly, McCarthy also revealed that he consulted the Capitol Police before releasing the tapes to ensure sensitive material was not released. He said the Capitol Police only raised concern about one piece of footage, which was protected before its release.

On the other hand, the Capitol Police told McCarthy that the Jan. 6 committee did not consult with the agency before it released footage.

Last October, CNN exclusively reported that congressional leadership had established a command center at Fort McNair in Washington, publishing additional footage not shown by the Jan. 6 committee.

The committee had shown footage of lawmakers gathering there, but the committee did not disclose the exact location. Instead, it labeled the footage as having taken place at an "undisclosed location," according to CNN.
