Dem lawmaker's staffer blasts border-themed Christmas decorations outside Eli Crane's office as 'insensitive, charged and insulting'

Jason Tufele Carl Johnson, a staffer for Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona, shared photos of border-themed Christmas decorations outside of Rep. Eli Crane's (R-Ariz.) office, describing the display as "insulting" and "insensitive."

The photos show elf figurines atop something that resembles a brick wall. A door has a sign on it that says, "BORDER PATROL ELVES ONLY," while another door has a sign that reads, "HAVE DOCUMENTS READY."

"Normally Longworth 2nd floor Christmas decorations are a bipartisan and amiable contest. Rep. Eli Crane's office has the most insensitive, charged and insulting Christmas decor I've ever seen in my 5 years on Capitol Hill," Johnson tweeted when sharing the photos.

"Make that 8 years for me. I've never seen a GOP office on the 2nd floor do this," tweeted Andrew Heineman, a staffer for Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.).

"In addition to being stupid and in terrible taste, Eli Crane and his staff are showing impressive ignorance of the nativity story. They should read Chapter 2 of the Gospel of Matthew to remind themselves what Christmas is all about," Aaron Fritschner, a staffer for Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.), tweeted.

Democratic Rep. Grace Meng of New York also decried Crane's Christmas decorations.

"This is how Republicans choose to use their time and resources in the halls of Congress. This is disgusting and dehumanizing rhetoric, and as a fellow member of Congress, I can think of so many better uses of our time than hanging up crude signs," she tweeted.

"'Crude signs' = references to basic functions of our Border Patrol," Crane's communications director Zach Kahler fired back in response to Meng's criticism. He also included a clown emoji.

"Looks like your office takes the contest about as seriously as your party does the crisis at the border," Kahler wrote in response to Johnson when sharing a photo of the outside of Grijalva's office.
