MSNBC's Joy Reid tries to paint DeSantis as racist over his warning for looters

MSNBC host Joy Reid suggested Saturday that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is promoting racist tropes by warning looters looking to rob businesses after Hurricane Ian ravaged the Sunshine State.

But the accusation completely backfired when people noticed the implicit claim in Reid's criticism itself had racist undertones.

What did Reid say?

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, DeSantis recounted a message he saw plastered on boarded buildings in a community destroyed by the storm.

"They boarded up all the businesses, and there are people that wrote on their plywood, 'you loot, we shoot,'" DeSantis said. "At the end of the day, we are not going to allow lawlessness to take advantage of this situation. We are a law-and-order state, and this is a law-and-order community, so do not think that you’re going to go take advantage of people who’ve suffered misfortune."

Later in the day, he invoked the Second Amendment when warning against looting.

"I can tell you, in the state of Florida, you never know what may be lurking behind somebody’s home," DeSantis said. "I would not want to chance that if I were you, given that we're a Second Amendment state."

On Saturday, Reid compared DeSantis' remarks to those once made by pro-segregationists, claiming DeSantis has returned to his true "form."

"'When the looting starts, the shooting starts.'—segregationist Miami sheriff Walter E. Headley, 1967," Reid said. "Didn’t take DeSantis long to return to form."

What was the response?

By directly connecting DeSantis' warnings against looting to racism, the suggestion implicit in Reid's comments was quickly exposed: that she drew a connection between looters and black people.

  • "D*mn… you automatically assumed black people would be looting? Sad of you to think so lowly of blacks," black commentator Barrington Martin II said.
  • "DeSantis didn’t suggest black people are looters, you did. DeSantis isn’t a racist, you are," black writer Samuel Sey said.
  • "So you're saying only black people loot? Sounds pretty racist to me," another person pointed out.
  • "How is it racist? Youre the one assuming looters will be black," another person said.
  • "Interesting Under FDR when the 1938 hurricane hit, the orders to the national guard in Providence was shoot to kill when it came to looters with boats breaking into all the stores in Downtown providence. FDR was a democrat if I remember correctly," meteorologist Joe Bastardi pointed out.
  • "Is Joy saying only Blacks loot? Seems a bit racist," another person said.
  • "This may come as a shock to you, but black homeowners in Florida have guns too," another person said.
  • "So you automatically came to the assumption that only black people loot...How racist of you," another person said.

Reid has been outspokenly critical of DeSantis in the wake of Hurricane Ian and even appeared to enjoy the prospect of DeSantis requesting federal assistance from President Joe Biden.

WaPo columnist Jennifer Rubin compares the MAGA movement to the Confederacy, says that 'extreme White Christian nationalism' will result in 'violence, cruelty and lawlessness'

Washington Post opinion columnist Jennifer Rubin has drawn a parallel between the Southern Confederacy of the Civil War and the modern-day MAGA movement, and said that "extreme White Christian nationalism" which goes unchecked results in "violence, cruelty and lawlessness."

"Indeed, the MAGA movement venerates the Confederacy and managed to accomplish what the South never did: stage an assault on the U.S. Capitol bearing the Confederate flag and organize an effort to stave off the peaceful transfer of power. Both the old Confederacy and the MAGA movement pine for a fraudulent past and dress up base racism in a gauzy wrapping of honor, masculinity and military virtue. And the paranoia about an existential crisis that so many MAGA followers share tracks with the Confederacy’s fear that their way of life (slavery) was endangered by Northern forces," Rubin wrote.

"No, the MAGA movement isn’t advocating for slavery. But it does seek to rewrite the history of race through its fraudulent attack on 'critical race theory,' just as Jim Crow defenders sought to refashion the Civil War by erecting monuments to traitorous secessionists. The aim is the same: to exonerate Whites and to recast them as noble victims," she continued.

MAGA is an acronym that stands for former President Donald Trump's oft-repeated campaign slogan "Make America Great Again."

"If left undisturbed, the extreme White Christian nationalism of today will inevitably lead to violence, cruelty and lawlessness," Rubin asserted.

In a piece earlier this year, Rubin claimed that the Republican Party has become devoted to instituting "White Christian nationalism."

MSNBC host Joy Reid has asserted that the GOP has been consumed by "white Christian* nationalism."

"The goal of the Republican Party today, is it to seize control of every level of government, to lock out voices of color & LGBTQ voices except those who conform to their demand that history and education uplift white Christian dominion as the one true bedrock of America," Reid tweeted in May.

"This Dominionism — this white Christian* nationalism — is cultish, sometimes violent, ugly and cruel. It has swallowed the Republican Party whole, it dominates the Supreme Court, and it’s rolling over our state legislatures, school boards, congress and governors mansions," Reid added.

Joy Reid says 'Christian nationalists' waging a pro-life 'jihad' will impose national forced birth law in the name of God

MSNBC host Joy Reid promulgated a narrative that pro-life "Christian nationalists" are waging a jihad against abortion and are actively bidding to enact a national forced birth law.

On Thursday night, Reid retweeted a Washington Post article with the headline: "This Florida teacher married a woman. Now she’s not a teacher anymore."

The article was centered around teacher Nicolette Solomon, who was enraged by Florida's Parental Rights in Education legislation – which prohibits classroom instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity for students in kindergarten through third grade.

Near the end of the article, the reader finds out "Solomon handed in her letter of resignation" on Feb. 2. However, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis did not sign the Parental Rights in Education bill into law until March 28.

The 44th paragraph of the article revealed, "The final straw was when her supervisor implied she would face consequences for taking a week’s leave so she could get fertility treatments; she and Hayley were trying to have a baby. But the bigger problem was it no longer felt possible to be lesbian and a teacher in Florida."

An NBC News article published on April 1 did not mention the fertility treatment issue and stated, "Nicolette Solomon, 28, taught fourth grade in Miami-Dade County for more than four years. As HB 1557 passed through the Legislature, she quit. Solomon, a lesbian, said that after months of having taught virtually through the coronavirus pandemic, the law was 'the straw that broke the camel’s back.'"

Solomon told NBC News, “The law would erase me as an LGBTQ teacher. Nobody would be able to know, which then puts me in the closet, and I’m there seven hours a day, if not more, five days a week. I wouldn’t be able to be who I am.”

Reid weaponized the Washington Post article to push the unfounded conspiracy theory that if Roe v. Wadeis overturned, it will open the door to forbid same-sex marriage, abolish LGBTQ rights, and allow sweeping discrimination.

"They're not going to be satisfied with forced birth state by state," Reid wrote on Twitter. "They're going to go for a national forced birth law. And then they're coming for everything else. The SCOTUS ending 'right to privacy' puts it ALL ON THE TABLE: gay marriage, LGBTQ rights, anti-discrimination."

Reid described the Washington Post article about the teacher quitting her job as "brutal" and claimed, "This is the reality in Florida and who knows where else soon."

The progressive cable talk show host added a second tweet vilifying "Christian nationalists" and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito – who penned the leaked initial draft opinion calling for Roe v. Wade to be overturned.

"Y'all keep comforting yourselves, believing Alito and the other Christian nationalists on the SCOTUS won't come for your communities," Reid ranted. "Making abortion illegal will satisfy them, right? ... Christian nationalists believe they are fighting a war for God. People in a jihad don't stop."

Earlier this month, leftist Reid lashed out at "white Christian nationalism" and the Republican Party.

"The goal of the Republican Party today, is it to seize control of every level of government, to lock out voices of color & LGBTQ voices except those who conform to their demand that history and education uplift white Christian dominion as the one true bedrock of America," Reid alleged.

"This Dominionism — this white Christian* nationalism — is cultish, sometimes violent, ugly and cruel," she seethed. "It has swallowed the Republican Party whole, it dominates the Supreme Court, and it’s rolling over our state legislatures, school boards, congress and governors mansions."

Reid again promoted the groundless belief that Republicans are coming to snatch away numerous rights from Americans because fascism is in the country.

"We’re all about to lose so many rights; so fast, most people won’t know what hit them, until it’s too late," Reid claimed. "Fascism isn’t a game, y’all. It’s real. And it’s in America, sometimes dressed as a kooky personality cult or carrying a confederate flag… and not enough people are fighting it."

Reid added, "And the first casualty will be women, who are about to find out what 'big government' really looks like, thanks to the Christian nationalist majority on the Supreme Court and the Republicans who are licking their chops at taking over the House and especially the Senate."

In April, Reid spouted that Republicans should be labeled as the "pro-rape, pro child marriage party,"

Joy Reid says 'white Christian* nationalism' has consumed the GOP

Leftist MSNBC host Joy Reid claimed in a tweet on Tuesday that the GOP aims to gain power throughout the government and block out LGBTQ and non-white voices except for individuals who uphold the idea that "white Christian dominion" is the foundation of the nation.

"The goal of the Republican Party today, is it to seize control of every level of government, to lock out voices of color & LGBTQ voices except those who conform to their demand that history and education uplift white Christian dominion as the one true bedrock of America," Reid tweeted.

She went on to claim that "white Christian* nationalism" has consumed the GOP and is impacting governmental institutions throughout society.

"This Dominionism — this white Christian* nationalism — is cultish, sometimes violent, ugly and cruel. It has swallowed the Republican Party whole, it dominates the Supreme Court, and it’s rolling over our state legislatures, school boards, congress and governors mansions," she asserted.

On her show earlier this year, Reid claimed that the Republican Party desires "a white nationalist autocracy" within America.

Reid said in a tweet on Monday that the pro-life movement should instead be referred to as "a forced birth movement."

"There is no 'pro life movement.' Pro-life would be pro-healthcare, school lunches for hungry kids and mercy for migrants fleeing literal death. Pro-life would fight poverty and fund kids education and kids and maternal healthcare. Call them what they are: a forced birth movement," Reid declared.

MSNBC host accuses Ron DeSantis of 'child abuse' over black students holding anti-CRT signs: 'Extra sick'

MSNBC host Joy Reid accused Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) of engaging in "child abuse" last week because several students held anti-critical race theory signs during a bill-signing ceremony.

What are the details?

Last Friday, Gov. DeSantis signed into law HB7, a bill that gives Floridians "tools to stand up against discrimination and woke indoctrination." The law is also known as the Stop WOKE (Wrongs Against Our Kids and Employees) act.

During the bill-signing ceremony, DeSantis was flanked by various students holding "stop woke" and anti-CRT signs.

In response, Reid accused DeSantis of "mis-use" of the black students, comparing it to "child abuse."

"This mis-use of Black boys is tantamount to child abuse," Reid said. "I would really like to hear the back-story on who these kids were and how they wound up at a DeSantis event. Given how anti-Black DeSantis is, using Black children this way is extra sick."

In a follow-up attack, Reid claimed the students who were used as "props" by DeSantis, whom she described as "America's most racist governor," came from a Miami-area charter school and "that they may not have known in advance why they were there."

Reid, however, did not provide evidence to corroborate her allegations.

How did DeSantis respond?

DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw confirmed that Reid's allegations are bogus.

On Saturday, Pushaw clarified that every person who stood behind DeSantis at the ceremony did so willingly. She even shared an image of the same black students whom Reid claimed were "props" seeking the pens that DeSantis used to sign the bill.

"I was working at this event and helped with the set up. My colleague talked to all the kids beforehand & told them what the issue was & what bills @GovRonDeSantis was signing. Hundreds of people attended this event; those ~50 who ended up on stage freely chose to stand on stage," Pushaw explained.

Dem Senate candidate Gary Chambers accuses GOP Sen. Tim Scott of supporting 'racist political ideology against his own people for a 'seat at the table''

Gary Chambers, a Democrat seeking election to serve as a U.S. Senator from the state of Louisiana, has declared that Republican Sen. Tim Scott's vote against confirming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the Supreme Court "is a disgrace."

"There are 3 Black men in the U.S. Senate, 1 of them, Tim Scott voted no on confirming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. There is always one of us, who thinks they know better than the rest of us Black folks. His no vote is a disgrace. Yea I said it," Chambers tweeted.

"Votes from Scott consistently show he will chose racist political ideology against his own people for a 'seat at the table,'" Chambers said in another tweet.

South Carolina is ranked 41 of all states, in the bottom 10 over all. \n\nTim Scott and Lindsey Graham equally contribute to that ranking in the bottom. \n\nVotes from Scott consistently show he will chose racist political ideology against his own people for a \u201cseat at the table.\u201d

The Senate confirmed Jackson in a 53-47 vote on Thursday, and Scott was one of the 47 GOP lawmakers who voted against confirmation. Scott, who in June, 2021, voted against confirming Jackson to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, issued a statement this week noting that he would vote against confirming Jackson to the high court. Jackson is slated to fill Justice Stephen Breyer's seat later this year after he retires.

Earlier this year, Chambers released a campaign ad that featured footage of him smoking marijuana. "Most of the people police are arresting aren't dealers, but rather people with small amounts of pot, just like me," Chambers said in a voiceover during the video.

The candidate later released an ad in which he burned a Confederate flag and claimed that "remnants of the Confederacy remain" throughout the American south.

Scott responded to Reid's remarks during an interview on Fox News.

"What is so offensive about what Joy is saying is that a black man cannot think for himself. I have to follow somebody else. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard," Scott said.

"There are millions of Americans who happen to be black, who want to think for themselves, who will think for themselves, but the power of the liberal elite wants to attack us like vicious dogs because they do not want anyone standing up" against "what they are doing, leading our country in the wrong direction," Scott said.

Sen. Tim Scott punches back at Joy Reid over 'vile' insult for opposing Ketanji Brown Jackson: 'The most ridiculous thing I've ever heard'

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) responded to MSNBC host Joy Reid on Thursday after she accused him of being the pawn of fellow South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R).

What did Reid say?

On Monday, Scott announced that he would vote against the Supreme Court confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson. Scott explained his decision saying that "ideology must be the determining factor—not identity—when considering such an important lifetime appointment."

In response, Reid claimed Scott is being "dog-walk[ed]" by Graham and law enforcement, essentially calling him a stooge for Graham's "barking-dog racism."

"Not surprised by anything @SenatorTimScott does," Reid tweeted. "He let @LindseyGrahamSC & the sheriffs dog-walk him and destroy police reform after pretending to work on it and now he'll go along with Lindsey's barking-dog racism against Judge Jackson because: he's Tim Scott."

How did Scott respond?

During an interview on "Fox & Friends," Scott exposed the offensive implications of Joy's accusation.

"What is so offensive about what Joy is saying is that a black man cannot think for himself, that I have to follow somebody else," Scott explained. "That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard."

Just as problematic, Scott said that Reid's criticism demonstrates how Democrats believe black people should be a political monolith.

"It reinforces the liberal elites' approach to minorities who will not fall in line and do what they tell us to do. There are millions of Americans who happen to be black, who want to think for themselves, who will think for themselves," Scott explained. "But the power of the liberal elite wants to attack us like vicious dogs because they do not want anyone standing up opposed to what they are doing, leading our country in the wrong direction.

"It is vile, it is offensive, and we should stop allowing the liberal media to push these stories by their hosts that want one thing and one thing only: progressive, liberal policies that make it harder for African-Americans — not easier," he added.

On Thursday, the Senate confirmed Jackson's nomination by a vote of 53-47. The only Republicans who supported Jackson were Sens. Mitt Romney (Utah), Susan Collins -Maine), and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska).

Jackson will begin serving on Oct. 3 after the Supreme Court returns from its summer recess.

Unhinged Joy Reid says GOP voters are 'pro-rape' and 'pro child marriage' in bonkers Twitter tirade

MSNBC host Joy Reid, in an unhinged rant on social media, asserted without evidence that the long-term goal of Republican voters is to impose "unbreakable rule by far right Christian ideologues" on the country.

In a string of flaming hot takes fired off Tuesday, Reid claimed that Republicans are appealing to pro-rape and pro-child marriage voters to win elections.

"The greatest, and sickest irony of the @GOP's new political strategy is that they are appealing to the most prurient fears of white Christian parents, while passing bills and maintaining alliances that normalize child brides and rape as a legitimate means of procreation," Reid began.

"If Democrats were anything like Republicans, they'd long ago have begun calling them the pro-rape, pro child marriage party," she continued, accusing Repubicans of "forcing women to be child-birthing slaves of the state" and "banning the teaching of what slavery is to keep the chattel docile."

The MSNBC host did not provide evidence that Republicans have passed bills that "normalize child brides" or make rape "a legitimate means of procreation." These claims are false.

In the past she's attacked abortion restrictions supported by Republicans, such as the Texas fetal heartbeat law that bans abortions after six weeks, as some kind of "American Taliban" and made comparisons between GOP laws and the dystopian Hulu series "The Handmaid's Tale." She has also claimed that Republican states attempting to ban critical race theory are teaching students "Confederate race theory" instead, as Fox News has reported.

It is unclear what prompted her latest rant, although she referred to an MSNBC segment with host Chris Hayes that discussed GOP attacks on Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson's record in child pornography cases. Republicans have accused Jackson of being soft on crime and child predators in particular, and Hayes tied their line of attack to Q-Anon conspiracy theories, accusing Republicans of hypocrisy because in his view they have not adequately condemned child predators in their own party, such as disgraced former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert, former Rep. Mark Foley, and former Senate candidate Roy Moore.

Reid insisted she was not "exaggerating" by citing two 2017 articles from the Federalist encouraging Alabama voters to support Moore, who was accused of sexual misconduct. During the 2017 special election for Senate in Alabama, a woman came forward with allegations that Moore had pursued a sexual encounter with her four decades earlier, when she was just 14 and he was 32. Moore has denied the allegations.

And here's another, in which the @FDRLST gives away the game: all that matters is the SCOTUS. Because it is through the Supreme Court, that the white Christian right hopes to impose its Taliban code and procreation-centered ideology on us all. #underhiseyehttps://thefederalist.com/2017/11/28/justified-vote-morally-questionable-politician/\u00a0\u2026
— Joy-Ann (Pro-Democracy) Reid \ud83d\ude37 (@Joy-Ann (Pro-Democracy) Reid \ud83d\ude37) 1649206894

The first article she referred to is an op-ed by a philosophy professor at Ouachita Baptist University that downplayed the age difference between Moore and his accuser at the time of the alleged encounter as "not an uncommon occurrence during this time" and "not without some merit if one wants to raise a large family." The second is an op-ed by D.C. McAllister, who argued more broadly that a political candidate's character should not be the only concern for voters.

Armed with the opinions of two people from a single publication with numerous writers and diverse guest columnists, Reid denounced all conservative ideology as "Putinite fascism mixed with Talibanism."

"And it's what they hope to impose on us: unbreakable rule by far right Christian ideologues, coal & oil polluters, heeled corporations & the super rich. With all rights hoarded by white Christian men & everyone else under firm control," Reid tweeted.

Fascist America is not gonna be a great place to live, folks, at least not for women and people of color. It can still be prevented, but y'all have got to wake up. And yeah, Democrats are largely uninspiring and terrible fighters. But they're all that stands between us and them.

MSNBC's Joy Reid says that the GOP wants America to be 'a white nationalist autocracy'

Leftist MSNBC host Joy Reid claimed during her show on Wednesday that the Republican Party desires for America to be "a white nationalist autocracy."

"They want a white nationalist autocracy in the United States," and think "white Christians ... need to rule the United States without elections," Reid claimed.

Last year when responding to a tweet that mentioned the Taliban, the MSNBC host tweeted that the U.S. "has our own far religious right dreaming of a theocracy that would impose a particular brand of Christianity, drive women from the workforce and solely into childbirth, and control all politics."

She also declared last year that the GOP is "anti-democracy, anti-voting, anti-history, anti-facts," and she referred to the GOP as "the pro-death party."

Reid has also claimed that people on the right of the political spectrum want the ability to be publicly racist without any repercussions.

"I’ll say it again: people on the right would trade all the tax cuts for the ability to openly say the n-word like in 'the good old days.' To them, not being able to be openly racist and discriminatory without consequence is oppression. Trump is the avatar for this 'freedom,'" she tweeted last year.

'They whited out President Obama during Black History Month': GOP criticized over Presidents' Day meme

The Republican National Committee posted a meme on Monday celebrating several past Republican presidents, while taking aim at Democratic President Joe Biden.

The meme included images of Abraham Lincoln, Calvin Coolidge, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump. Words spread throughout the meme said, "Happy Presidents' Day to Such Great U.S. Presidents." But in the center of the meme, a space with a photo of current President Joe Biden included text declaring, "Not You."
