Philly DA’s 2-tier justice system demands federal scrutiny

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner calls himself a progressive reformer, but his policies — especially those that give illegal aliens special treatment in criminal cases — endanger public safety and weaken the rule of law.

Because of that threat, the Immigration Reform Law Institute has asked Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Justice Department to investigate Krasner and these reckless practices. By pushing for “immigration-neutral” outcomes instead of equal justice, Krasner not only corrupts the legal process but also puts Philadelphia residents in harm’s way.

By shielding illegal aliens from the legal consequences of serious offenses, Krasner’s policies risk making an already dangerous situation even worse.

Krasner’s policies reflect a larger movement bankrolled by billionaire George Soros, who has poured millions into electing progressive prosecutors across the country. In 2017, Soros funneled nearly $1.7 million through the Philadelphia Justice and Public Safety PAC to help Krasner win the Democratic primary.

This effort fits into Soros’ broader goal of installing district attorneys who push ideological agendas at the expense of public safety. Cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco followed the same pattern, where Soros-backed prosecutors — such as the now-departed George Gascón, Kimberly Foxx, and Chesa Boudin — adopted similar lenient policies toward illegal aliens.

These prosecutors frequently reduce charges or seek lighter sentences to shield noncitizen defendants from deportation, creating a two-tiered justice system that favors illegal immigrants over American citizens.

Krasner’s strategy hinges on the Office of Immigration Counsel, created in 2018 and staffed at taxpayer expense by Stephanie Costa. Her job: help prosecutors reduce “immigration consequences” for noncitizen defendants, even in serious criminal cases.

Records obtained by IRLI show that in 2023, former immigration counsel Caleb Arnold advised on cases involving migrants charged with rape, robbery, strangulation, aggravated assault, and vehicular homicide.

Krasner claimed in 2018 that the office would assist only with “low-level offenders who pose no threat to public safety.” The facts tell a different story. Arnold frequently helped broker plea deals or reduce charges — deliberately avoiding convictions that trigger mandatory deportation. These interventions bypass federal immigration law and keep dangerous individuals in the community, raising the risk of repeat offenses.

Krasner’s leniency carries obvious risks. When prosecutors reduce charges for illegal aliens to help them avoid deportation, the justice system fails to hold offenders fully accountable — potentially encouraging more crime. A noncitizen charged with rape, for example, might receive a downgraded charge, dodge immigration enforcement, and remain in Philadelphia with the opportunity to reoffend.

This policy puts criminal defendants’ interests above public safety, especially in a city already struggling with violent crime. From 2019 to 2021, robberies and aggravated assaults on Philadelphia’s SEPTA transit system surged by more than 80%. Critics point to Krasner’s soft-on-crime agenda as a driving force behind that surge.

By shielding illegal aliens from the legal consequences of serious offenses, Krasner’s policies risk making an already dangerous situation even worse.

Krasner’s use of immigration status in sentencing decisions also raises questions about fairness and discrimination. The Justice Department recently launched an investigation into Hennepin County, Minnesota, for factoring race into prosecution decisions — signaling a broader crackdown on unequal enforcement. Krasner deserves the same level of scrutiny.

By giving noncitizens special treatment, Krasner discriminates against U.S. citizens. His approach turns justice into a two-tiered system, where punishment hinges not on the crime but on the defendant’s nationality. That violates the foundational principle that justice should be blind.

Krasner’s defenders may claim his policies protect vulnerable communities, but shielding violent offenders from deportation doesn’t protect anyone. It weakens trust in the justice system, demoralizes law enforcement, and endangers the very communities Krasner claims to serve. Victims — regardless of immigration status — deserve a system that values accountability over ideology.

Backed by Soros money and executed through a taxpayer-funded immigration counsel’s office, Krasner’s policies represent a dangerous departure from the prosecutor’s core mission: enforce the law and protect the public. Federal authorities must step in to restore equal justice and uphold the principle that no one — citizen or not — stands above the law.

30-year-old thug accused of shooting Philly cop amid brawls near HS: 'You're a damn adult. You're supposed to know better.'

A 30-year-old male is accused of shooting a 26-year-old Philadelphia police officer amid brawls near a city high school Wednesday — and the police commissioner had harsh words for the suspect.

Dachan Seay is facing multiple counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, reckless endangerment, and other related offenses, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the following day, WPVI-TV reported.

'I'm asking you to say a prayer for this officer and his family, as well as everyone who puts on that uniform to protect and serve Philadelphia.'

Bethel said several fights were underway outside Overbrook High School in the area of North 59th Street and Columbia Avenue when additional officers were called in, the station said.

Shots rang out around 2:40 p.m., WPVI said. Gunfire is audible on a cellphone video the station added to its report.

The commissioner said an adult armed with a weapon got involved, after which a shot was fired into the ground, and the officer was wounded "under his vest" by the the ricochet, the station said.

He was assigned to the 19th district in March.

The officer — hit by one shot in his stomach — was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where he underwent surgery, officials told WPVI. The officer — who is new to the force, having graduating from the academy in 2024 — was recovering as of Thursday morning, officials told the station.

"I'm asking you to say a prayer for this officer and his family, as well as everyone who puts on that uniform to protect and serve Philadelphia," Mayor Cherelle Parker told listeners during a Wednesday news conference, WPVI said.

Bethel added that the officer didn't immediately realize he had been shot, the station said.

WPVI said the commissioner also had pointed words for the suspect: "You're a damn adult. You're supposed to know better. You're supposed to be the one who has to come in here to de-escalate, not escalate."

Sources added to the station that a teenager also was apprehended in connection with the incident.

Far-left Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner told WPVI in a statement that "while this investigation remains open, I want to stress that my office will hold this suspect justly and appropriately accountable for his outrageous actions."

No officers fired their weapons during the incident, the station said, adding that no other injuries were reported.

Philadelphia police data indicates Wednesday's shooting was the sixth police-involved shooting in 2025 and the second time an officer was injured in the line of duty, WPVI noted.

Dave Portnoy trashes ABC reporter over 'ambush' interview: 'I forgot how much I hate f**king journalists'

Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy clashed with an ABC affiliate during an interview about an incident at his bar in Philadelphia.

A video from inside Barstool Sansom Street went viral and showed employees displaying a sign that read "F**k the Jews," which was brought out for customers who had purchased bottle service. This means the sign was requested by a customer and fulfilled by members of the bar staff.

Portnoy responded to the incident in disgust, which should have been expected by employees given that he himself is Jewish. After contemplating whether or not to expose his employees and others involved publicly, Portnoy decided to fire two waitresses and send the customers on a paid trip to Auschwitz in exchange for not condemning them by name.

On Monday morning, Portnoy said he decided to speak with an ABC affiliate from Philadelphia, WPVI, after the outlet allegedly "begged" him to do an interview on the incident. Portnoy said he agreed and, among other claims, alleged that the outlet switched reporters on him and subsequently tried to blame Barstool Sports, and white men in general, for the anti-Jewish sign.

"The reporter tried to say Barstool and I and white men were responsible for the incident," Portnoy wrote on X, alongside a video.

The entrepreneur then included a portion of the interview from his side of the camera, which seemingly picked up after the alleged accusation.

'I'm the journalist. I'm asking you.'

"Here's what I would say is causing that type of environment," Portnoy told the reporter. "All these colleges would let Jewish kids get harassed on campus 24/7. I've been speaking out about this since it started."

Portnoy then asked the ABC reporter where her claim came from.

"First of all, that sounds like a made-up thing. I don't know what that quote is. The society of school. Where are the professors from?"

"I [could] go back and see, if you want to waste time," the unnamed reported replied.

The reporter soon revealed that her claim came from a source at the University of Virginia.

"I totally disagree for what you just said," Portnoy replied. "Who's creating more hate right now in in the world? Would you say Barstool Sports and white men or college campuses?" he asked.

The journalist, seemingly not happy with the role reversal, refused to answer any questions.

"I'm the journalist. I'm asking you," she said.

Portnoy retorted, "Well, I don't play by those rules. What does that mean? You're a journalist? I'm a journalist. I run a big media organization. I just asked you a question. Answer the question."

"You're not running this interview," the ABC reporter replied.

Portnoy then declared the interview was over and closed his laptop.

The video clip then went back to Portnoy in present time, who then said, "F**k ABC. It makes me mad. I forgot how much I hate f**king journalists, this f**king piece of shit."

It is unclear where the journalist's claim originated, exactly.

In 2022, a University of Virginia publication called Iris published an article titled, "5 Things You Should Know About Barstool Sports if You Care About Being a Good Person."

The article referred to Portnoy as sexist and racist and said Barstool Sports published "repugnant" articles.

The post was written by Eryn Rhodes, a student who described herself as "she/her/hers" while studying "History and Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies."

In the piece, Rhodes referred to a book called "Sidelined." A Kirkus review of the book stated, "[The author] aims much of her anger at Barstool Sports, the online media company that 'definitely engages in advanced-level trolling.' Some may assume the author is just settling scores, but Barstool has a long reputation of harassment."

Furthermore, an NBC News article from 2019 included quotes from a professor named Lisa Nakamura, who said that Barstool Sports related to young, white men because it casts them as "persecuted ones" who feel disadvantaged and therefore see the platform as a safe space to voice offensive opinions.

However, Nakamura was a professor at the University of Michigan, Portnoy's alma mater, not the University of Virginia.

As well, a student from Temple University was reportedly suspended as a result of the sign incident at the bar.

Fistfight between 2 boys ends when 45-year-old relative of one boy shoots the other kid — a 13-year-old — and runs away: Cops

During a fistfight between two boys in Philadelphia on Thursday evening, police said an adult family member of one of the boys emerged from a house, shot the other boy twice, and fled from the scene.

Police told WPVI-TV a 13-year-old boy was shot twice in the stomach around 6:40 p.m. at 57th Street and Kingsessing Avenue.

'The adult should haven been de-escalating the situation. Not taking it [to] another level.'

The shooting victim was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, police added to the station.

The suspect "appears to be a 45-year-old male," police Inspector Michael Gormley told WPVI.

"As the fight transpired, the family member of the other participant in that fight came out of that house and shot our complainant, and that person has fled the scene," Gormley added to the station.

WPVI said police throughout the evening were in and out of a home on the corner where they say one of the boys and the adult shooting suspect lived. Police found three spent shell casings at the scene, WTXF-TV reported.

Gormley added to WPVI that police were "trying to locate" the 45-year-old accused shooter.

Police said the shooting suspect and his juvenile relative who took part in the fight both know the shooting victim, WTXF said.

Those with information about the case are asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS, WPVI said.

How are people reacting?

Commenters under WPVI's Facebook post about the shooting were disturbed by it.

  • "The adult should haven been de-escalating the situation. Not taking it [to] another level," one commenter wrote.
  • "This world is f**ked up," another user declared.
  • "Wow crazy," another commenter said.
  • "Not taking sides, but the best thing to do is to just keep your hands off other people!" another user suggested. "Teach them that. Bad things can (and usually do) happen otherwise. Talk it out ... Be a peacemaker."

Homeowner in his 60s confronts male tampering with door — then male breaks through it, cops say. But homeowner has a gun.

A Philadelphia homeowner in his 60s confronted a male tampering with his front door last Monday night — and when the intruder broke through the door, the armed homeowner fatally shot the male, police told WPVI-TV.

The station said police could be seen examining the door of the home in the 1000 block of Cobbs Creek Parkway near Cedarhurst in the southwest part of the city as they collected evidence following the incident.

'After breaking into the doors and being confronted by the homeowner, that's when the homeowner fired one shot.'

Only the husband and wife — both of whom are in their 60s — were home when the incident unfolded around 11 p.m., WPVI said.

"The homeowners who were in the house at the time, they saw on their Ring camera that somebody was tampering with the front door," Chief Inspector Scott Small with the Philadelphia Police Department told the station.

Police added to the station that the husband confronted the male, who then broke in through the front doors, WPVI noted.

When police arrived, they found the male bleeding after being shot, the station said, adding that he later died at a nearby hospital.

"After breaking into the doors and being confronted by the homeowner, that's when the homeowner fired one shot, striking the 64-year-old who has just broken into the house, and he collapsed right inside of the enclosed front porch," Small also told WPVI. "That's where police found him."

Investigators noted to the station that they found fresh damage to the wooden doors and a Ring camera pulled from the wall. Police also told WPVI the male was homeless.

Police told WXTF-TV that the homeowner and his wife are cooperating with authorities and that the couple didn't know the suspect. Police on Tuesday told the Philadelphia Inquirer that investigators would present the facts of the case to the District Attorney’s Office for “possible charging.”
