Gang of 6 teens — including 14-year-old girl 'leader' — charged for 'unprovoked,' broad-daylight beatdowns in space of 1 hour

A gang of six teenagers — including the "leader," a 14-year-old girl — have been charged in connection with a series of broad-daylight physical attacks that occurred in the space of one hour last week in Philadelphia.

The minors — all students at Anthony Wayne School in Grays Ferry — were charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and other crimes in connection with the "unprovoked" attacks last Tuesday, WTXF-TV reported.

'Of the six that were arrested, none of them were arrested before, which is very, very surprising. We're not sure what caused them to do this.'

Some of their movements were captured on video the police department posted on YouTube. The video indicates that all of victims were attacked from behind and were punched in the head and face several times.

WTXF, citing investigators, said one of the teens punched a homeless man in the face near the intersection of 15th and Chestnut Streets around 3 p.m.

Philadelphia Police Inspector Raymond Evers noted that a 14-year-old girl, whom he described as the "leader," minutes later punched a 24-year-old woman near 17th and Chestnut Streets, the station said.

The other teens joined in by punching the woman while she was on the ground, after which the victim suffered a concussion, investigators told WTXF.

Evers noted that the girl "leader" was "instructing the other kids what to do," the station said, adding the Evers noted the girl was wearing "pink boots" and that the attacks were "unprovoked."

Evers added to WTXF that the teens moved to the 200 block of North 19th Street where a 31-year-old man was punched and chased less than an hour after the first attack.

Investigators added that a 40-year-old woman was punched near the Target on 20th and Callowhill Streets moments later, the station said.

Evers said the 14-year-old girl "leader" turned herself in with her parents that day after police shared surveillance video of teens wanted for the attacks, WTXF reported.

The following day the other five teens surrendered to police while accompanied by their parents, Evers told the station.

"The parents were right on point," Evers said, according to WTXF. "They saw their kids did something wrong ... and ... they turned their kids in."

Evers added to the station that investigators are still trying to figure out a motive: "Of the six that were arrested, none of them were arrested before, which is very, very surprising. We're not sure what caused them to do this."

Man charged with murder after leaving car running while at ATM, shooting crook in head who jumped into car and drove off

A man was charged with murder after leaving his car running Friday while at an ATM in Philadelphia and shooting a male in the head who jumped into the car and drove off.

Officers responded after 3 p.m. to a shooting call at Frankford Avenue and Pratt Street, which is in the northeast section of the city, KYW-TV reported.

Police on Sunday said 39-year-old Sherwayne Garrison was charged with murder, KYW reported in a follow-up story.

Police told the station that a man using the ATM left his car running, and a male jumped into the car in an attempt to steal it. According to WPVI-TV, the 48-year-old male who jumped into the car ended up driving off with it — and the car owner fired one gunshot and hit the male in the head.

Police told WPVI the wounded male crashed the Honda into another car at Pratt Street outside the Frankford Transportation Center. Police added to KYW that the man who pulled the trigger is a licensed gun owner.

The police homicide unit told KYW the male who was shot was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m. the same day.

Authorities said Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority Police took the man who pulled the trigger into custody, KYW added.

Police on Sunday said 39-year-old Sherwayne Garrison was charged with murder, KYW reported in a follow-up story. The deceased 48-year-old's identity isn't known at this time, the station also said.

You can view a video report here about the shooting. It aired prior to police filing the murder charge.

How are people reacting?

As you might guess, the murder charges elicited strong reactions. Here are a handful of comments under a pair of KYW Facebook posts about the situation:

  • "Saw this coming," one commenter said. "As sad as it is, he was under no immediate threat, and the guy was running away from him. Sad that the criminals have more rights than we do. Hope he has a good lawyer."
  • "Stupid law...what [is] the guy supposed to do...let the criminal steal his car??" another user asked.
  • "So we can't defend ourselves and/or our properties now!" another commenter exclaimed. "This will open doors to criminals and push them to hurt good citizens more!"
  • "Not a surprise, always defending the criminals," another user noted.

Popeyes employee stabs customer in self-defense after dispute over food order, police say

A Philadelphia Popeyes employee stabbed a customer in self-defense after an argument over a food order turned physical late Tuesday night, police told WPVI-TV.

Police told the station the incident took place just before midnight in the 6000 block of North Broad Street; officials noted to WPVI there were roughly eight employees in the store at the time.

Police said the employee so far isn't being charged.

"The 28-year-old customer had some sort of dispute with employees over a food order and began attacking and assaulting one of the employees," Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department told the station. "Other employees intervened and tried to push this 28-year-old out — back out from the front door. That's when the 34-year-old employee getting assaulted and attacked pulled a knife and stabbed the 28-year-old."

WPVI reported that the male was stabbed multiple times in the torso and head.

The male ran away after the stabbing, but police told the station they followed a blood trail to a nearby house where they found him. WPVI said the customer was taken to a hospital where he's in stable condition and in police custody

The Popeyes employee remained on scene and was cooperating with detectives, the station said, adding that police said the employee so far isn't being charged.

Police added to WPVI that the entire incident was recorded on surveillance video.

How are observers reacting?

Commenters underneath WPVI's video posted to YouTube appeared incredulous — and sometimes sarcastic — over the incident:

  • "Not only is fast food bad for you, these days it can be fatal," one commenter wrote.
  • "Over fried chicken," another commenter noted. "Let that sink in."
  • "If I got the honey mustard sauce instead of the spicy buffalo like I ordered, I'd be pissed off, too," another commenter quipped.
  • "I understand you got to defend yourself, but this is just crazy," another commenter stated. "Arguing over a food dispute."
  • "U can’t make this s**t up," another commenter declared.
