Portland protesters attack cops after deadly police-involved shooting

After a deadly police-involved shooting Thursday in Portland, a large group protesters attacked officers at the scene.

What are the details?

Portland police said the group began yelling, throwing items at officers, and attempting to interfere with the investigation.

What are the details about the shooting?

Police got a welfare check call after 7 p.m. about a white adult male dressed in all black at a motel. Police said after officers arrived with paramedics, they encountered a man matching that description, and an officer-involved shooting took place.

Police said the man was taken to a hospital by ambulance but died despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel.

"We're early in this investigation," Police Chief Chuck Lovell said. "Preliminary information suggests our officer encountered a very difficult and dynamic situation that no officer wants to face."

Maxine Bernstein, who covers law enforcement for the Oregonian, offered the following account — and noted that the involved officer is black:

An apparent witness gave a different account to KOIN-TV, saying the incident may have started as a fight between two men, and one stabbed the other. The station reported that the witness said police shot the stabbing suspect twice in the back in the parking lot of a Motel 6 — but police didn't confirm that account.

Anything else?

Police said the involved officer will remain on paid administrative leave until the completion of an investigation by the department and the Multnomah County District Attorney Office. KGW-TV said the officer's name was expected to be released Friday.

Here's a KGW video report that aired before the station learned the man who was shot had died:

Similar recent incident

In April, the Oregonian posted a tweet that identified a man Portland police fatally shot as white "in light of social unrest prompted by police shootings of Black people." The paper deleted the tweet after backlash.

One of the critics was conservative radio host Jason Rantz, who tweeted that the "Oregonian is noting the race of the man who was shot in Portland because people won't care enough to riot unless the victim is black and can use it to forward a political agenda. How instructive."

It didn't seem to matter to one protester at the time who recorded himself on video walking along a row of Portland police officers, flipping off each one of them as he bellowed, "F*** you! Quit your f***in' job!"

Oregon newspaper deletes tweet identifying police shooting victim as a white person after online uproar

The Oregonian newspaper deleted a "poorly worded" tweet that identified the race of the victim of a lethal police shooting as white after getting criticized from the right and left.

The news outlet was reporting on a shooting where a man was shot and killed Friday morning after police said that they were alerted to a report that a man with seen with a gun at a park in Portland, Oregon.

Police said they confronted the man at about 9:40 a.m. and fired a "less lethal" projectile at him before another officer shot him once with his firearm. They called for medical attention but he was declared dead at the scene.

Protesters began accosting the police over the incident in light of recent allegedly racially charged shootings elsewhere.

The Oregonian reported that three sources had confirmed the man was a white male in his thirties.

"The man who was killed was a white male in his 30s, according to three sources with knowledge of the investigation. The Oregonian/OregonLive is identifying the man's race in light of social unrest prompted by police shootings of Black people," the tweet read.

Some criticized the newspaper for implying that the incident wasn't as serious because the victim was not a minority.

"The Oregonian is noting the race of the man who was shot in Portland because people won't care enough to riot unless the victim is black and can use it to forward a political agenda. How instructive," tweeted talk show host Jason Rantz.

Others on the left criticized the same tweet for not being supportive of the "Black Lives Matter" cause.

"So @PortlandPolice murdered a man in Lents Park today and the @Oregonian had the audacity to print this. Someone school them on what solidarity means. Protesting killer cops is going to happen regardless of the race of the victim. The Oregonian staff just showed their whole ass," read one tweet.

The newspaper deleted the tweet and offered an explanation in a later tweet.

"We included information in an earlier tweet about why we identified the victim's race that was poorly worded. It was not intended to minimize what happened, only to provide context," the newspaper said.

We included information in an earlier tweet about why we identified the victim's race that was poorly worded. It was not intended to minimize what happened, only to provide context. We generally do not identify race in news stories but often do when reporting police shootings.

"We generally do not identify race in news stories but often do when reporting police shootings," they added.

After deleting the "poorly worded" tweet, they also changed the text in the body of the article, which had been the same as in the tweet.

Portland Police would not say if they had recovered a weapon at the crime scene. A witness told The Oregonian that he saw the man behaving erratically, with his hands up and his shirt off. He said that the man was blocking traffic before police arrived.

Violent Antifa protesters turn on Biden after reopening child migrant facility, target Portland businesses

Violent protesters descended on Portland late Saturday, an almost weekly occurrence, this time rioting over President Joe Biden's administration reopening a controversial migrant center designed to house minors who illegally entered the United States without their parents.

What happened?

Violent protesters, who were reportedly associated with Antifa, marched down the streets of Portland's Pearl District smashing cars and vandalizing businesses.

More from KOIN-TV:

Businesses in the district have been coated with graffiti decrying police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Demonstrators also broke windows at some businesses.

A Chipotle on Northwest Lovejoy Street had its windows smashed out at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday while customers were still inside. Other businesses caught in the damage include a Starbucks, an Urban Pantry and an Umpqua Bank. As protesters chanted for police to "go home," residents shouted at protesters from their balconies to "go home."

Videos posted to social media showed hundreds of black-clad protesters creating chaos in the streets.

According to KOIN, Portland police forces were strained as the violence was ongoing, limiting their abilities to enforce the law, because of "several shootings" that had occurred in other parts of the city.

Just two people were arrested, one person for first-degree criminal mischief and a 17-year-old protester on charges of interfering with a peace officer and third-degree escape.

Why were they protesting?

The pre-planned violence came in response to immigration policy being enacted under Biden, KOIN reported, specifically the reopening of a detention center for unaccompanied migrant children.

The facility — located in Carrizo Springs, Texas — is capable of housing hundreds of children, and was the site of controversy under former President Donald Trump.

The Biden administration said reopening the facility was necessary because of a spike in border crossings and coronavirus-related restrictions meant other government facilities designed to house migrant children have lower-than-normal capacity limits.

Reopening the facility earned Biden condemnation from immigration activists.

"It's unnecessary, it's costly, and it goes absolutely against everything Biden promised he was going to do," Linda Brandmiller, a San Antonio-based immigration lawyer who represents unaccompanied minors, told the Washington Post. "It's a step backward, is what it is. It's a huge step backward."

"When I read they were opening again, I cried," Rosey Abuabara, a San Antonio immigration activist, said. "I consoled myself with the fact that it was considered the Cadillac of [migrant child] centers, but I don't have any hope that Biden is going to make it better."

'Shut the f*** up, b***h!': Black Lives Matter militant gets in cop's face amid Portland street showdowns

There were some nasty scenes going down Thursday on the streets of Portland, Oregon, as Black Lives Matter militants faced off with supporters of police — and officers trying to keep the peace as well.

What are the details?

In one interaction caught on cellphone video, a Black Lives Matter activist — apparently a woman — tells off a male officer using decidedly profane language.

Holding her arm outward and touching the cop's chest, the white BLM militant gets furious at the officer: "Step the f*** back, ugly! S**t! You can't run up on people like that!" Then as he engages in the friendly chat, the militant shouts, "Shut the f*** up, bitch!"

After the militant turns and walks away, she shoves the arm of a black man recording the proceedings on cellphone — and he's justifiably annoyed that she apparently can get away with such an act while he insists he'd be charged with a crime if he did the same thing.

Here's the clip. (Content warning: Language):

More to the story

As it turns out, a longer video that precedes the latter outburst shows the white BLM militant with an angry, tearful black woman who complains to police that she was called the N-word and that such an act is a "hate crime."

Things heat up considerably when the officer — who gets the face-full of abuse from the white BLM militant in the latter video — informs the black woman that being called the N-word is not a crime.

"It should be, though!" the black woman yells back.

As the officer and the black woman continue to interact, the white BLM militant tells the cop, "Shut the f*** up! You're speaking beyond your limits, bro!" The cop ignores the slight and encourages both of them to go home.

As the black woman and the officer move closer to each other's faces, the white BLM militant repeatedly says, "Stop walking up on her, sir!" and tells other cops, "Hey! Get your man off of her! He is touching her!"

How it all started

There's also video of what led to the latter interactions with police.

The starting point — as noted previously — was showdowns between Black Lives Matter militants and supporters of police, referred to as Back the Blue.

And in one scene, the same black woman shown in the above clip starts arguing with a white woman about the proper way to wear a mask — and the black woman tells the white woman, "Shut up, cracker! Shut up, cracker!"

With that, the white woman gets furious about being called a "cracker" and yells back at the black woman using the N-word before walking away. The crowd reacts strongly to the N-word utterance.

WATCH: Portland Rioters Overwhelm Cops, Torch Police Union Headquarters

Portland protesters, led by the “anti-Fascist” group Pacific Northwest Youth Liberation Front, threatened police and set a number of fires in the city’s downtown Saturday night, leaving Portland police to declare the demonstration a “riot.”

The incidents, caught on video by reporters on the scene, marked the 52nd night of unrest in Portland.

Friday night, federal officers — members of an elite Customs and Border Protection unit moved in to assist Portland’s law enforcement officers in protecting a federal courthouse, one of the rioters’ top targets these past several months. The officers detained several of the protesters Friday night, but were largely absent Saturday night, leaving Portland police to handle the unrest alone.

‘Protesters broke into a building, set it on fire and started dumpster fires late Saturday night in Oregon’s largest city,” Fox News reported. “The fire at the Portland Police Association building was put out a short time later, Portland police said on Twitter. The department declared the gathering a riot, and began working to clear the downtown area.”

“In North Portland, the PNW Youth Liberation Front, an organized group that has been leading demonstrations over the course of the past two months, hosted a protest to demand the abolition of the Portland Police Bureau and decry violence against people of color. After an evening gathering at Peninsula Park, marchers headed south on Interstate Avenue, stretching out for about five blocks,” Oregon Live added.

The group eventually ended up at the Portland police union headquarters. They then began tipping Dumpsters to form a barricade for themselves as they attacked the building. Two of the Dumpsters were set on fire, and protesters who breached the building eventually set two small fires inside.

By 10:45, Portland police declared the incident a “riot,” and “[a]round 11:15 p.m., police began pressing protesters to the east. Most protesters did not resist. Police took multiple people into custody,” Oregon Live reported.

Video of the protests and the subsequent fires made it on to social media quickly.

Protesters and Portland city officials — and even Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) — decried federal efforts to assist in handling the riots, repeating claims, first raised by demonstrators, that federal agents, without badges or insignia, were “disappearing” protesters, whisking them away in unmarked vehicles to undisclosed locations.

The CBP address those concerns on Saturday, noting that federal agents had been deployed to assist in defending the federal courthouse in Portland, but that CBP officer uniforms did bear the insignia of the Department of Homeland Security. One protester was, indeed, taken to a second location, but, CBP says, not to hide the detainment, but rather to avoid a “large” mob that was advancing on officers.
