Breaking: 6-year-old student in custody after allegedly shooting his elementary school teacher in Virginia

A Virginia elementary school went into lockdown after a 7-year-old student shot a teacher in the abdomen on Friday morning.

The startling incident unfolded at the Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, a city of nearly 200,000 residents in the eastern part of the state.

Police responded to the shooting at about 2 p.m. and said an adult female victim was rushed to Regional Riverside Medical Center. Michelle Price, a spokeswoman with Newport News Public Schools, confirmed that the victim was a teacher at the school.

Police said no students were harmed and that all other faculty were safe.

A Newport News school board member confirmed that the shooter was a student.

The crime scene was reported to be at the first/second grade wing of the school.

The lockdown at the school was lifted at about 3:20 p.m., and students were allowed to be reunited with their parents in the gym of the school.

Police Chief Steve Drew told the media that police responded almost immediately to the call and that the suspect was also taken into custody almost immediately. He said that the shooter did not walk around the school shooting, as was feared, but that the shooting was confined to one incident and one gunshot.

Drew would not say whether the shooting was accidental or intentional but added that the staff and the faculty had acted in a "heroic" fashion.

Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones praised the actions of the police.

"The police did an amazing job, got here very, very quickly, along with the sheriff's office," said Jones. "We are ensuring that everyone is safe, we are ensuring that everyone is accounted for, they're going to be in the cafeteria right now, and people are being escorted out to their parents."

WATCH: Biden tells one 'freaking weird' story about the time he left a dead dog on a woman’s doorstep

While reminiscing about the good old days serving on the New Castle County Council, President Joe Biden shared a strange tale about the time he put a dead dog on the doorstep of a female constituent who was "not of the same persuasion as I was politically."

Speaking at the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference on Tuesday, Biden told his audience “I know from personal experience how hard the job you have is,” before launching into an amusing little anecdote about the time a mean, rich lady (who was surely one of those awful Republicans) called the council to insist a dead dog be removed from her yard.

"I represented a middle to working class district. There was one very wealthy neighborhood. And I got a call one night, a woman said to me – obviously not of the same persuasion as I was politically – called me and said, 'there’s a dead dog on my lawn,'" Biden said.

“And I said, ‘yes ma’am, did you call the county?’ And she said, ‘Yes, they’re not here.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’ll get 'em in the morning,’” he continued.

“She said, ‘I want it removed now, I pay your salary.' So I went over. I picked it up. She said, 'I want it out of my front yard.' I put it on her doorstep,” he added, grinning at his own cleverness.

A video clip of Biden's unusual speech made the rounds on social media with mixed reviews.

RNC research pointed out that Biden had told this story before but, interestingly, it had a different ending at the time.

In December 2020, Biden told the same group this story but said he “arrived in a pickup truck and **removed** the animal himself that night.”https://www.naco.org/articles/biden-harris-roots-lie-county-government …

Some people actually liked Biden's story, or at least they didn't completely hate it.

I must say I found his story humorous and this was probably one of the most coherent speeches I've seen him make in a while.

Am I missing something??

Wasn’t a terrible story actually. I laughed. It’s better than wanting to curse every time he opens his mouth

Yeah, I’m going to say this was actually funny.

Then there were those who just couldn't bring themselves to appreciate Biden's comedic genius:

Massive explosion at ExxonMobil refinery near Houston leaves several injured

Authorities in Texas are saying that a "major industrial accident" occurred in or near an ExxonMobil refinery in Baytown, near Houston on Thursday morning. At least four people are known to be injured at present, and no deaths have yet been reported.

According to KHOU-TV in Houston, the explosion occurred in a part of the refinery that is used for processing gasoline. The explosion caused a massive fire that was witnessed and recorded by local TV news crews and social media users.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted that the fire appeared to have been the result of an explosion inside the plant and that there did not appear to be any need to evacuate the area.

For now, no reports to evacuate or shelter-in-place. Four persons may be injured; three taken by Lifeflight and one by ambulance. #HouNewshttps://twitter.com/sheriffed_hcso/status/1473935897796173825 …

Police say that the fire initially broke out around 1am local time, and fire crews were continuing to battle the blaze at the time of this reporting. All four of the injured workers were reported to be in "stable" condition in Houston hospitals.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. A spokesperson for ExxonMobil said that "Our Industrial Hygiene staff continues air quality monitoring at the site and fence line. Available information shows no adverse impact at this time," and additionally that the company is cooperating with authorities "as appropriate."

The Baytown ExxonMobil complex is the second-largest oil refinery in the United States.

This is a developing story which may be updated as events warrant.
