Road rage suspect opens fire on fellow motorist in Chicago, cops say. But victim is a concealed carrier — and wins shootout.

Chicago police said a road rage suspect opened fire on another motorist earlier this week, but it turns out the victim is a concealed carrier — and came out on top in the shootout.

The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 7700 block of West Belmont Avenue in the city's Dunning neighborhood, WLS-TV reported.

The station said the abandoned, crashed car was full of bullet holes.

Police said a 23-year-old man was driving east on Belmont when he was involved in an apparent road rage incident with the male driver of a white Honda also heading east on Belmont, the station reported.

Police said the driver of the white sedan took out a gun and fired shots, and the 23-year-old victim — the concealed-carry license holder — returned fire at the suspect, WLS noted.

With that, the suspect crashed his vehicle into a building, causing damage, and fled the scene, police told the station.

Police said no one was injured, and no one is in custody, WLS reported, adding that Area Five detectives are investigating.

The station said the abandoned, crashed car was full of bullet holes.

A family living in the building shared surveillance video from inside their home that captured audio of the gunfire and car crash. It's not clear, however, why the surveillance video's timestamp reads 9:06 p.m.

WFLD-TV said what may have led to the road rage isn't yet known, and police haven’t released a description of the suspect. But WLS reported that one person captured video of a male exiting the crashed white Honda and running from the scene — and that clip is part of the WLS video report below.

'A gun fight in Chicago? Who would’ve ever thought that could happen?'

Mike Opelka is host of “Daybreak” on 92.5 Fox News Radio in Fort Myers/Naples, Florida — as well as "a Chicago native who wisely got the hell out" and "a concealed-carry permit holder in 35 states; Illinois is not one of them."

Opelka had a few things to share with Blaze News about this incident — and ye olde sarcasm dial was turned all the way up to 10:

A gun fight in Chicago? Who would’ve ever thought that could happen? This escapee of the Windy City is not exactly surprised. Except for the fact that one of the shooters was a legal gun owner. How does the 23-year-old get a concealed-carry permit in Chicago? I would not be surprised if city authorities had already confiscated the man’s firearm and canceled his permit. After all, we can’t have citizens just randomly protecting themselves against armed road ragers.

Road-rage suspect uses hatchet to repeatedly smash windows of crashed car — and the act is caught on cellphone video

Cellphone video caught the moment when a road-rage suspect repeatedly smashed the windows of a crashed car in Boston — and the unhinged fellow carried out the act with a hatchet, of all things.

Police said the aggravated assault took place just after 11:40 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Commonwealth Avenue in the city's Brighton neighborhood.

The victim added that he felt disoriented after the crash but recalled that the suspect approached him and began smashing his vehicle windows with a hammer or axe.

Police said the suspect reportedly chased the victim in his vehicle at a high rate of speed, causing the victim to crash. Police said the suspect then exited a gray pickup truck, assaulted the victim, and used a hatchet to break the windows and windshield of the victim's vehicle after the victim fled.

You can view video here of the hatchet attack.

Police said the suspect fled on Babcock Street in the direction of Brookline.

What else do we know?

According to WBTS-TV, a preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was driving a Toyota Prius south on Commonwealth at a high rate of speed, veered to the right, jumped the median separating the road from the bicycle lanes, and crashed into a tree on the sidewalk.

Police told the station the Prius sustained extensive damage and that the airbags had deployed.

The Prius driver told police that the pickup truck driver chased and forced him off the road, WBTS reported.

The victim added that he felt disoriented after the crash but recalled that the suspect approached him and began smashing his vehicle windows with a hammer or axe, the station said, adding that the suspect also swung the hatchet at him and chased him down the street for a short distance.

More from WTBS:

Witnesses told police they saw the suspect chasing the victim along the sidewalk armed with an axe. One witness showed police clear cellphone video showing the suspect smashing the victim's vehicle repeatedly with a small hatchet.

The victim suffered a hand injury in the crash and was treated at the scene but refused transport to a hospital.

Boston police on Sunday released photos of the alleged suspect and asked the public for help in identifying him, the station said.

Dead shooting victim makes AI-generated court appearance, giving some the willies

An Arizona man sort of came back from the dead to address his killer in court, thanks to artificial intelligence, leaving his family with a sense of peace but others with a sense of horror.

On Monday, the friends and family of the late Christopher Pelkey gathered in the courtroom of Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Todd Lang for the sentencing of Gabriel Horcasitas, who had been convicted of manslaughter in Pelkey's death.

In November 2021, the two men got into a road-rage battle that escalated quickly. At a red light, Pelkey, 37, exited his vehicle and confronted Horcasitas, 50, outside of his car, at which point Horcasitas drew a weapon and fired several rounds at Pelkey, killing him, KNXV-TV reported at the time.

Now, three and a half years later, Pelkey made a return of sorts after his sister, Stacey Wales; her husband, Tim; and Tim's friend Scott Yentzer created a video that included a simulacrum of Pelkey giving a statement written by Wales.

"I'm a version of Chris Pelkey recreated through AI that uses my picture and my voice profile," the simulacrum said on a clip that can be viewed here.

The simulated Pelkey then addressed Horcasitas, offering forgiveness and a message of hope and redemption.

"To Gabriel Horcasitas, the man who shot me: It is a shame we encountered each other that day in those circumstances," Pelkey's image said. "In another life, we probably could have been friends."

"I believe in forgiveness and God who forgives. I always have, and still do," the image continued.

The simulated Pelkey even drew attention to his digitally aged appearance, encouraging listeners not to lament the natural aging process. "This is the best I can ever give you of what I would have looked like if I got the chance to grow old," AI Pelkey said. "Remember, getting old is a gift that not everybody has, so embrace it and stop worrying about those wrinkles."

'AI can ... hinder or even upend justice if inappropriately used.'

Even though Pelkey's loved ones submitted nearly 50 victim impact statements, "there was one missing piece," Wales said. "There was one voice that was not in those letters."

So Wales' husband and friend Yentzer, who have worked with artificial intelligence technology for years, put their heads together to find a way to give Chris a voice. Wales said the two men created "a Frankenstein of love" using several different tools mashed together. The result is believed to be the first AI-generated victim impact statement used in an American court.

The video of Pelkey's image had a profound emotional impact on many in the courtroom, including Pelkey's brother John. "To see his face and to hear his voice [talk about forgiveness], just waves of healing washed over my soul. Because that was the man that I knew," John said.

Judge Lang was likewise moved. While prosecutors had recommended a nine-and-a-half-year sentence, Judge Lang sentenced Horcasitas to 10 and a half years and professed admiration for the AI-generated victim statement.

"I love that AI," the judge said at the hearing. "Thank you for that. I felt like that was genuine, that his obvious forgiveness of Mr. Horcasitas reflects the character I heard about today."

Not everyone was so enthusiastic about the video, however. The New York Post described it as "eerie," and Arizona Chief Justice Ann Timmer noted that while AI may have an important role to play in American courtrooms going forward, it should be monitored carefully.

"AI can ... hinder or even upend justice if inappropriately used," Timmer explained in a statement. "A measured approach is best. Along those lines, the court has formed an AI committee to examine AI use and make recommendations for how best to use it. At bottom, those who use AI — including courts — are responsible for its accuracy."

Others online were similarly wary:

  • "This is highly inappropriate and I cannot believe it was allowed to happen in a court of law," quipped Michigan journalist James David Dickson.
  • "This doesn't seem ... healthy for anyone or anything involved," said the Scottish Law Librarians Group.
  • "The most distressing technological development of the year," added another user.
  • "Not sure what's worse: the sister presenting the AI of her dead brother in court [or] the judge's reaction to it," said yet another user.

One X user warned loved ones against even thinking about pulling such a stunt. "If I die and you do this s*** to me I will haunt your a** like you would not believe," the user promised. "I'm talkin VERY spooky antics."

Peter Gietl, managing editor of Return at Blaze Media, is likewise disgusted that an "AI ghost" was admitted into an American court of law.

"I can’t believe a judge would allow a kangaroo court to occur in a court of law. The defendant should try to get a mistrial declared," he told Blaze News in a statement. "Unfortunately, these AI ghosts are going to become more common. However, they aren’t the real person any more than a cartoon is."

"An AI creation of a deceased family member is not your family member, and disturbing at a core level of our humanity."

Still, Wales seems at peace with the video and statement she helped create on her late brother's behalf. "I want the world to know Chris existed," she said. "If one person hears his name or sees this footage and goes to his Facebook page or looks him up on YouTube, they will hear Chris’ love."

Viral road-rage video shows SUV driver slam motorcycle rider across busy highway, then make getaway — until cops get tip

A viral road-rage video out of Oregon shows an SUV driver slam a motorcycle rider across busy highway Monday morning, then make a speedy getaway.

The Beaverton Police Department said the incident took place around 6:16 a.m. on westbound Highway 26 between Highway 217 and Cedar Hills Boulevard and "may have been the result of a road-rage interaction between the driver of a blue late-model Kia Carnival and a motorcycle rider."

After speaking to numerous community members, investigators 'have reason to believe Pazzoto-Filho [was] driving recklessly in the days prior to this incident,' police said.

Police said the Kia "sideswiped the motorcycle, causing the rider to lose control. The driver of the Kia then fled the scene." Police said investigators believe the actions of the Kia driver "were intentional," and they were looking for vehicle and the driver.

You can view video here of the incident.

Suspect arrested

The Beaverton Police Department said police arrested a suspect Monday evening in connection with the hit-and-run incident.

Police said Samir Helio Pazzoto-Filho, a resident of Washington County, was taken into custody after officers responded to a community member's tip, which led them to Pazzoto-Filho’s residence near Highway 26 and Southwest 185th Avenue.

Arriving officers saw Pazzoto-Filho driving his blue Kia Carnival, and police said it matched the vehicle involved in the incident:

Police said Pazzoto-Filho has been charged with:

  • attempted assault;
  • second-degree assault (felony);
  • hit-and-run (felony);
  • reckless driving;
  • unlawful use of a weapon.

Police said the motorcycle rider was discharged from a hospital after suffering serious injuries.

After speaking to numerous community members, investigators "have reason to believe Pazzoto-Filho [was] driving recklessly in the days prior to this incident," police said.

Those with additional information about the suspect are urged to contact the Beaverton Police Department at 503-526- 2261.

Pazzoto-Filho, 41, on Wednesday morning remained in the Washington County Jail, according to records, which didn't show bail information or a release date.

Disturbing video shows apparent road-rage shooting at busy Florida intersection; male suspect faces murder charges

A Florida male and female have been arrested in connection with an apparent road-rage shooting in the middle of a busy intersection that left one dead and another in critical condition. The shooting was caught on video.

Around 4:17 p.m. Sunday, police dispatchers began receiving calls regarding a shooting at a busy intersection in Panama City.

Officers near the shooting began chasing the fleeing pickup truck.

An Instagram account titled "Bay County Bad Drivers" uploaded video of the shooting.

Video shows a red GMC Terrain SUV stopped at a red light with a gray Dodge Ram pickup truck directly behind it. Two males are seen standing outside the SUV before returning inside the vehicle.

When the light turns green, the trailing pickup truck aggressively accelerates to the left and whips next to the driver's side of the SUV. It appears that the pickup truck passenger's hand emerges from the truck's open window, and about a dozen gunshots are heard. The SUV comes to a stop in the middle of the intersection.

Police said the pickup truck attempted to flee the crime scene. Officers near the shooting began chasing the fleeing pickup truck.

Panama City Police said in a press release: "They pursued the suspect vehicle north on Hwy 231, while other officers responded to the scene."

WMBB-TV reported that during the chase, the pickup truck collided with a police car on an access road between a Mexican restaurant and a Holiday Inn.

Police arrested two suspects from the pickup truck roughly a mile from the shooting scene.

Panama City Police said two people in the red SUV were shot. One victim died soon after arriving at a local hospital. The other shooting victim was in critical condition.

The shooting victims' identities have yet to be released because the incident is an active homicide investigation, and next of kin are being notified.

Police arrested Jubal Simmons and Ivybella Encino, the New York Post said.

Simmons — the suspected shooter, the Post said — is facing a number of charges, including first-degree premeditated homicide-murder, three counts of first-degree attempted premeditated homicide-murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, destroying or altering evidence, and resisting an officer without violence, according to police records.

Encino was hit with charges of first-degree accessory to a crime, fleeing or eluding police, and aggravated assault on an officer, records also say.

Simmons is being held without bond. Encino is being held on a $850,500 bond.

Panama City Police said they are "grateful to all the witnesses who came forward with information and evidence in this case."

The PCPD urged anyone with additional information on the shooting to contact Panama City Police at 850-872-3100 or phone in a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 850-785-TIPS (8477).

Road-raging male blocks driver who's with pregnant girlfriend; charges at driver on foot, cops say — but driver has a gun

Houston police said a male in his 40s was aggressively driving a truck and swerving in and out of traffic on Interstate 610 around 9:30 p.m. Friday, KHOU-TV reported.

Police told the station the aggressive truck driver at some point targeted a car driven by a 20-year-old man whose pregnant girlfriend was a passenger.

The 20-year-old driver used to be a security guard, had handcuffs on him, detained the truck driver, and called police, authorities told KHOU.

Police told KHOU the truck driver started to "brake-check" the car and was being "extremely reckless." With that, the 20-year-old exited the interstate at McCarty Street to get away from the truck driver, but the truck driver followed him, the station said.

Police told KHOU the truck driver pulled up next to the 20-year-old's car at red light on McCarty Street and started yelling, indicating that he wanted to hurt the 20-year-old and his girlfriend.

Police added to the station that the 20-year-old motorist again tried to get away from the aggressive truck driver — but the truck driver actually drove into oncoming traffic lanes to swerve in front of 20-year-old and block him.

Police told KHOU the truck driver then got out and ran toward the 20-year-old driver's car with his hands near his pocket. Police told the station the 20-year-old driver feared for his life and opened fire through the front windshield and through the side of the car, hitting the aggressive truck driver in the torso, arm, and leg.

The 20-year-old driver used to be a security guard, had handcuffs on him, detained the truck driver, and called police, authorities told KHOU.

Police told the station the 20-year-old was fully cooperating with investigators. The alleged aggressive truck driver was taken to a hospital, where he's expected to survive, KHOU noted.

"He's our victim, but again, more of a suspect, really," Lt. R. Willkens told the station. "Kind of a self-defense thing."

Police told KHOU no charges have been filed against the 20-year-old — and that he and his pregnant passenger were not hurt in the incident.

The station said it's unclear whether the truck driver will face charges.

Horrifying viral video shows male body-slamming woman headfirst on road after fender bender; suspect released on $2,500 bail

A horrifying viral video shows male body-slamming a woman headfirst on a Massachusetts road last week after a fender bender.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 1A just before 9 a.m. in Attleboro after the victim hit the male's vehicle from behind, WBZ-TV reported. Attleboro is just shy of an hour southwest of Boston and near the Rhode Island border.

'I called my friend, and I started crying, and I said "I can't feel my knees, I can't feel my knees." I needed her to go get my kids, so she had to go pick up my children, and all I could think was I'm probably never going to be able to walk again.'

“He kept slamming on his brakes, and then when we got to the intersection, we hit a light, and he was in front of me," Hailea Soares told WHDH-TV. "As soon as we went through, we didn’t even make it across, and he slammed on his brakes, so I hit him."

A witness told police the male — identified as 26-year-old Gladior Kwesiah of Pawtucket, Rhode Island — banged on the roof of Soares' car and pulled her out of her vehicle, WBZ said.

That account appears to conflict with WHDH's report, which notes that Soares said she exited her car to take video of the damage, but Kwesiah took her phone. However, WCVB-TV reported that Soares recorded the moment her attacker came for her in her car.

The witness from WBZ's report said Kwesiah and Soares were arguing, and when she told him to leave her alone, Kwesiah allegedly picked up Soares and body-slammed her to the ground. A witness recorded video of the incident, WBZ added.

A video report from WJAR-TV shows the body slam; viewer discretion is advised.

'I might die right now'

"The only thing that I could think of was I knew I was in the air, and by the time I was realizing I was in the air and I thought to myself, like, 'I might die right now,' I had already hit the ground. And I didn't realize that I had hit the ground," Soares told WBZ. "It was like a weird sensation I felt on my face, and that's when I realized I was on the ground, and I rolled over, and there was blood dripping all over my hands."

Soares — a mother of two who stands five feet tall and weighs 110 pounds — told WCVB she was body-slammed twice. She told WHDH that after the second body slam, she wasn't able to get back up.

Police told WBZ they found Soares crying and bleeding from her head on the road, after which she was hospitalized with a broken knee, broken foot, an injury to her eye socket, and a serious injury to her skull.

'I don't know if he was having a bad day, I don't know what that was, but if that's the type of person he is, then I don't think he belongs in society with the rest of us.'

Soares was released from the hospital Friday, WBZ said, adding that she feared the worst: "I called my friend, and I started crying, and I said 'I can't feel my knees, I can't feel my knees.' I needed her to go get my kids, so she had to go pick up my children, and all I could think was I'm probably never going to be able to walk again."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Soares’ recovery, WHDH said.

Standing over her

Police told WCVB that Kwesiah was standing over Soares when they arrived to arrest him.

Kwesiah was taken to the Attleboro Police Department, where he was booked and charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon with serious injury resulting, malicious destruction of property, and operating without a license, WHDH reported.

“Inappropriate and unacceptable conduct stemming from what was essentially a minor motor vehicle crash,” Attleboro Police Sergeant Kevin Sellers added to WHDH.

Kwesiah was arraigned Friday in Attleboro District Court, WBZ said, adding that the court set bail in the amount of $2,500 cash along with a condition that Kwesiah has no contact with the victim. Attleboro Police on Tuesday morning confirmed to Blaze News that the suspect was released on $2,500 bail.

"I don't know if he was having a bad day, I don't know what that was, but if that's the type of person he is, then I don't think he belongs in society with the rest of us," Soares noted to WBZ.

You can view WBZ's video report here.

Concealed-carrying motorist shoots male who approaches him allegedly with hand under shirt during road rage incident

A concealed-carrying motorist opened fire at a male who approached him allegedly with his hand under his shirt during a road rage incident in Illinois over the weekend.

Urbana Police said they responded at 4:30 p.m. Saturday to the intersection of Busey Avenue and Park Street.

The female driver was armed with a baseball bat, police said, adding that her male passenger approached the lone male driver.

Police said a male and female in one car got into a verbal dispute with a male driving alone in another car.

The lone male drove past the male and female, police said, adding that the male and female followed the lone male.

The lone male pulled into a hospital emergency room parking lot and then exited on Park Street in order to create distance between himself and the male and female following him, police said.

The car occupied by the male and female continued west on University Avenue, turned north on Busey Avenue, and stopped at Park Street, police said, adding that they exited their vehicle as the lone male reached the intersection.

The female driver was armed with a baseball bat, police said, adding that her male passenger approached the lone male driver.

Police said the lone male driver indicated that the other male had his hand underneath his shirt as if he were carrying a weapon.

Police said the lone male driver — a concealed-carry permit holder — from his vehicle drew a legally concealed gun and fired several rounds striking the other male.

Police said the lone male called 911 to report the incident.

The wounded male was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and was in intensive care, police said.

Police said the incident is under investigation, and no arrests had been made.

Police added that those with information about the case can call 217-384-2320 and make arrangements if they wish to discuss the information privately. Those wishing to remain anonymous can submit tips to Crime Stoppers by phone at 217-373-TIPS, online at 373tips.com, or through the "P3 Tips" mobile app.

Boston woman killed in road rage attack, devastated mother hopes driver 'burns directly in hell!'

A 26-year-old Boston woman was allegedly killed in an intentional road rage attack, according to reports. The devastated mother of the slain woman hopes the alleged driver involved in the fatal incident "burns directly in hell!"

According to a preliminary investigation by the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office, Ryan Sweatt "became engaged in an apparent road rage incident with another vehicle" on Thursday night while driving on Route 85 in Hopkinton — a suburb of Boston.

At some point, the occupants of the other vehicle exited the car, including Destini Decoff. Authorities say that Sweatt "subsequently made a U-turn at a high rate of speed and struck the victim in the roadway" with his Honda Civic.

Witness Brett Martin told WBZ-TV, "He chose to turn around, chose to come back. He knew what he was doing when he went towards that girl."

"We could tell there was a little road rage going on," Martin alleged.

Martin said, "I saw her mid-air kind of coming down towards the street...her jacket must've been 20 feet away from her. However, she got hit, those clothes flew off."

The prosecutor said Sweatt slammed into Decoff, "knocking her several feet into the air."

Decoff was rushed to the hospital after experiencing injuries “head to toe,” according to her mother. She suffered a brain bleed; collapsed lungs; internal bleeding; and broken shoulders, ribs and tibia.

The New York Post reported, "After spending the night in surgery to remove a portion of her skull to relieve the pressure on her brain and cut out her spleen, Decoff was placed on a ventilator. She died without ever regaining consciousness."

Decoff succumbed to her injuries and died on Sunday.

Sweatt reportedly drove away but said he made the conscious decision to turn around.

However, a prosecutor told the court that a police officer witnessed Sweatt speeding away from the apparent crime scene.

According to Sweatt, the driver of the other vehicle slammed on the brakes while in front of him.

Sweatt, 36, claimed that the individuals in the other vehicle threatened to kill him, and one allegedly pulled a knife on him.

An officer claimed that when Sweatt was pulled over by police, he yelled, "They’re trying to kill me!"

Sweatt, of Milford, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, operating to endanger, and a marked lanes violation.

Before her daughter's death, Decoff's mother blasted the driver for the alleged road rage attack.

While her young daughter was on life support, Tracy Decoff wrote on Facebook, "With every ounce of my being I hope that mf burns directly in hell!"

After Destini died, the grieving mother wrote: "Today my biggest fear as a mother became my reality. My first born child & best friend is no longer with me."

Sweatt was jailed without bail.
