Elderly man dies after suspect — who was in police custody just hours earlier — shoves him down subway steps: NYPD

An elderly man has died after the suspect in his killing — who was in police custody just hours earlier — shoved him down subway entrance steps in New York City on Thursday night, police told WCBS-TV.

The attack against the 76-year-old man occurred just before 9:30 p.m. in the city's Chelsea neighborhood at West 18th Street and 7th Avenue, the station said.

'Disgusting.'

Responding officers found Ross Falzone on the subway stairs with head injuries, WCBS said, adding that he was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and later died.

The station said police believe they know who carried out the crime since the suspect was taken into custody earlier Thursday.

Police told WCBS that officers around 3:30 p.m. Thursday encountered the suspect behaving erratically outside the NYPD's 17th Precinct.

The male was taken into custody, the station said, and officers brought him to Bellevue Hospital. WCBS said he was taken to the psychiatric emergency room for evaluation — and released an hour later.

Surveillance video around 9:30 p.m. Thursday recorded Falzone approaching the subway — and the same male who had been taken into custody earlier in the day was seen walking quickly behind him and then shoving the elderly victim down the steps, police told WCBS.

Falzone struck his head about halfway down the steps, the station added.

Emergency responders were called, WCBS said, adding that Falzone was rushed to Bellevue Hospital but died just before 3 a.m. Friday.

Police are searching for the suspect, the station said, adding that the NYPD hasn't released his name or description.

Observers commenting under the WCBS video report about the elderly man's death are beyond done. Some examples:

  • "This is what you vote for in blue city NY," one commenter said.
  • "Disgusting," another user stated.
  • "There will be no justice," another commenter lamented.
  • "The powers that be do this because they're not scared of being dragged out and held accountable," another user declared.

Video: Thug with 'no heart' spits on woman in Philly store, repeatedly punches her in face, knocks her to the floor

Philadelphia police said a male confronted a woman in a store last month, spit on her, physically attacked her, and caused injuries to her — and the brutal beatdown was recorded on surveillance video.

Police said the assault took place around 11 p.m. April 22 in the 4000 block of Market Street in the University City neighborhood.

'He has no heart, no heart.'

Police said after the confrontation, the argument between the two escalated, and the male spit on the woman and repeatedly punched her in the face before knocking her to the floor of the store.

Police said the woman suffered several injuries due to the attack.

The male left the store in an unknown direction, police said.

Rasheedah of South Philadelphia added to the station, "Why these men gotta attack women? There's other ways to resolve conflict. It's just so sad to see."

Police added to WXTF that the victim has been connected with victim assistance and advocacy services.

Police said over the course of the fight, Jones obtained a firearm from another individual. During a break in the fight, police said Jones walked away from the other combatants, drew the weapon, and fired six times into the crowded Pedestrian Mall.

Police said five people were struck by gunfire:

  • One victim suffered a life-threatening wound to her head and remains in critical condition.
  • One victim was struck in the arm and chest, causing serious injuries requiring surgery.
  • One victim was struck in the leg, causing serious injuries requiring multiple surgeries.
  • One victim was struck in the side of the stomach, causing bodily injury.
  • One victim was struck in both legs, causing bodily injury.

Police said of the five victims struck by gunfire, two remain hospitalized.

'Dozens of bystanders' reportedly record video while 15-year-old boy is mercilessly beaten then fatally shot at playground

"Dozens of bystanders" reportedly were recording video while a 15-year-old boy was mercilessly beaten and then fatally shot at a New York City playground last week.

Former Mayor Eric Adams posted video on X showing Thursday's deadly altercation, and the New York Daily News reported that the clip shows "dozens of bystanders ... recording" while the beatdown took place.

'They treated it all as entertainment. He was already beat up. He was helpless, and they shot him.'

The Daily News added that the video shows at least three individuals repeatedly punching and kicking victim Jaden Pierre as he tries to protect himself amid the attack.

The paper said one of the attackers is seen grabbing Pierre's hoodie and throwing him to the ground. After Pierre gets back up, one of the attackers pulls a gun and pistol-whips Pierre, and gunfire rings out, the Daily News said, adding that Pierre collapses to the ground, and the crowd runs away.

The paper said Pierre suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

The day after the fatal shooting, New York City Police posted images of an individual they said is wanted for the homicide of the 15-year-old victim.

On Tuesday, the NYPD said 18-year-old gang member Zahir Davis is the individual being sought in connection with the shooting at the Nautilus Playground inside Ray Wilkins Park in Queens, according the the Daily News.

However, police sources told the paper the shooter has connections to the Caribbean nation of Jamaica and may have fled there after the deadly altercation.

There are conflicting reports regarding why a crowd gathered at the playground that day. The Daily News said Pierre was attending a water-gun fight he helped organize over social media. WPIX-TV also said it was a water-gun fight. However, WABC-TV said the gathering was for a water-balloon fight.

The Daily News said an unidentified associate of Davis recognized Pierre from a previous brawl, after which Davis and the unidentified associate cornered Pierre against a fence, where they were caught on video beating the teen as dozens of bystanders stood by recording the attack.

Soon the shooting took place, the paper said, adding that police said forensic investigators will determine if the shooting was accidental.

"When you watch the video, he strikes him in the head with a gun, and as he comes down, the shot rings out," NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said, according to the paper.

Kenny said the man who incited Thursday's attack jumped Pierre in January, and Pierre's friends retaliated by beating that same man, the Daily News reported.

Kenny also noted that Davis is part of the BG4 crew — short for Blitz Gang 4 — which operates in southeast Queens, the paper said.

At a Monday evening vigil for Pierre, New York Attorney General Letitia James said detectives had identified the shooter and urged the suspect to surrender himself, the Daily News said.

RELATED: Blaze News original: 10 times bystanders failed to help victims of brutal violence — and often recorded video instead

"I want everyone to know that the police know who shot Jaden," James said as she stood with the victim's family and hundreds of mourners just steps from the scene of the crime, according to the paper.

The attorney general added, "I would urge this gentleman to turn himself in, to surrender as soon as possible, before the NYPD gets to you. They know who you are," the Daily News reported.

Gardy Pierre, the victim's father, added the following during the vigil, according to the above WCBS-TV video: "I know how tough he was. They knew, man. That was the only way to put him down. 'Cause they know he's gonna stand up tall on 10 toes every time, man."

The victim's older sister, 17-year-old Nellie Pierre, had harsh words for those recording video of the attack on her brother, telling the Daily News that "everyone there recording did nothing. They treated it all as entertainment. He was already beat up. He was helpless, and they shot him."

The paper, citing relatives, said Jaden attended ninth grade at Eagle Academy and was looking forward to starting a new job through the city's Summer Youth Employment Program.

MLB umpire chases down, fights teen thug who allegedly stole his phone on Philly street: Police sources

A Major League Baseball umpire chased down and fought a teenager who allegedly stole his phone on a Philadelphia street earlier this month, KYW-TV reported, citing police sources.

Multiple law enforcement sources identified the umpire as Brock Ballou, who has been an MLB umpire since 2022, the station said.

'They ended up on the ground, at which time the victim struck his head, causing injury. The male continued his assault, violently punching him.'

Police released surveillance video of the suspect, KYW noted. Police said the suspect is a teenage male with brown complexion wearing a light blue sweatshirt and black pants.

Police said the suspect approached Ballou from behind in the 1600 block of Walnut Street in the downtown section of the city around 7 p.m. April 9, stole Ballou's phone while the umpire was looking at directions, and then ran off, the station reported.

"The suspect approached the male and snatched his cell phone out of his hands," Capt. Jason Smith told KYW. "The victim went chasing after the male, at which time they got involved in a physical altercation at 16th and Walnut."

Investigators told the station that when Ballou tried to take his phone back, the suspect punched him several times in the head. KYW said surveillance video it reviewed shows the suspect repeatedly punching Ballou.

"They ended up on the ground, at which time the victim struck his head, causing injury," Smith added to the station. "The male continued his assault, violently punching him."

The suspect then ran away without the phone, which was returned to Ballou later by someone on the street, police told KYW.

Ballou's injuries were not serious, police added to the station.

Ballou was in Philadelphia to work the Phillies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks series last weekend, KYW said, adding that Ballou umpired at first base the night after the incident and was behind home plate two days later.

KYW said MLB declined to comment.

In addition, police told the station the same suspect about a half-hour previously had entered a 7-Eleven just a few blocks away in the 1200 block of Chestnut Street and allegedly stole several items. Police told KYW that an employee confronted the suspect, after which the suspect punched the employee multiple times before the suspect fled the store.

Police are asking those with information about the crimes to contact the department's central detective division at 215-686-3093/3094, the station said.

'Disgusting': Thug caught on video punching female crossing guard in face, knocking her out as elementary schoolers watch

A male was caught on video punching a Philadelphia-area crossing guard in the face and knocking her out in front of elementary students Monday afternoon.

The incident took place outside Walnut Street Elementary School in Darby Borough shortly after 3:30 p.m., WPVI-TV reported.

'Her children go to this school, so can you imagine? They shouldn't have to witness anything like that.'

Authorities told the station the guard was helping students cross the street when a male exited his car, chased her down the sidewalk, and punched her in the face.

"It's disgusting," Darby Borough Police Chief Joe Gabe told WPVI. "She stated an unknown male exited a Nissan Altima and came at her in an aggressive manner, chased her down the street, about a quarter of the way down the block, grabbed her, and struck her in the face with his left fist."

RELATED: 3 females dragged Philly crossing guard off bus when she tried to escape brutal beating, detective says; suspects arrested

Surveillance video captured the attack; it shows the male chasing the guard down a sidewalk until she stops next to a school bus. The male gets in her face, brutally punches her, she falls backward to the ground, and he runs off.

She told police she was knocked unconscious as the male ran back to his car and drove away, the station said.

The chief told WPVI it's believed the suspect may have been angry about waiting in traffic: "He may have been upset with having to wait for her to cross children off of the school bus there."

Gabe added to the station that the suspect was yelling profanities as he drove through the intersection prior to the attack: "When he was approaching her, he was yelling more obscenities at her before he grabbed her and struck her in the face."

The crossing guard suffered swelling to her face, WPVI said, adding that police said she regained consciousness, walked home, and then called authorities.

The station said the crossing guard didn't report to work Tuesday, and a male crossing guard took her place.

"We just spoke to her, she's feeling OK, but she's very shaken up over what happened yesterday and is worried to go back to her position as a crossing guard," Gabe added to WPVI.

Dionne Galloway, a school district employee, added to the station that "I see her every day. She's a part of this family, this school district. She crosses these children every day. She's always on time. She's always helpful. I just hope she recovers and is safe. Her children go to this school, so can you imagine? They shouldn't have to witness anything like that."

Police told WPVI they're asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect, who was seen driving a gold Nissan Altima. However, police added to the station that the car didn't have a license plate and had a paper tag in the window.

"It's terrible that a person would come up, just out of nowhere, just maybe frustrated with traffic or having to wait, and goes over and assaults this woman," the chief told WPVI. "A male goes over and assaults this woman in front of children and has no problem doing it."

Gabe also has a message for the suspect, the station noted: "We are tracking you down, and we're hoping that we will be able to find you and have you prosecuted. So the best thing to do is to turn yourself in."

Suspected package thief, homeowner engage in shootout — then suspect fires at officers, police say

Philadelphia police said a suspected package thief engaged in a shootout with a homeowner and then soon fired at officers Sunday, WPVI-TV reported.

Police heard gunshots coming from the 400 block of East Rockland Street in the city's Feltonville section around 5:30 p.m., the station said.

'So everyone missed. Someone needs more training.'

Police rushed to the scene and found a man firing a gun, WPVI said, adding that the man then fired toward officers.

A nearby homeowner told police he saw the suspect stealing packages and confronted the suspect, the station said.

With that, the pair engaged in a shootout, WPVI said. There was no indication who fired first.

The suspect ran away, but police recovered a gun from the scene, the station said.

No injuries were reported, WPVI said, and no arrests were made.

The incident remains under investigation, the station said.

"They'll do anything but get a job," one commenter remarked.

Other observers were just as disgusted:

  • "So everyone missed. Someone needs more training," another commenter quipped.
  • "Thank God no one was hurt," another user said. "And hopefully the other person that was protecting the packages [won't] be charged."
  • "Damn, he lost the gun — probably worth more than the packages," another commenter added.
  • "But, but, but [Democrat Pennsylvania Gov.] Josh Shapiro said crime is down!!" another user observed.

Charlie Kirk assassination timeline: What we know so far

In the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk on a Utah college campus Wednesday, a clearer and more substantive timeline has been developing as officials gather additional information about the shooting and continue a manhunt for the shooter.

What happened Wednesday?

KTVX-TV reported that Kirk’s American Comeback Tour commenced at noon local time at Utah Valley University in Orem, which is about 10 minutes north of Provo and about 45 minutes south of Salt Lake City.

Mason said the individual they're after 'blended in well' with the university and 'appears to be of college age.'

The station said Kirk was hosting a “Prove Me Wrong” table in the UVU courtyard. As was typical for the TPUSA founder and his events on college campuses, Wednesday's event took place outside, and anyone was invited to debate him and ask questions. KTVX reported that around 3,000 people attended the event.

Around 12:20 p.m., Kirk — who was seated under a tent — was in the middle of a question-and-answer exchange when he was struck by a bullet, the New York Times reported. Kirk was hit in the neck, blood gushed from the wound, and he slumped from his seated position. As those in attendance scattered and took cover, Kirk was rushed to a local hospital.

By 1:10 p.m., a UVU spokesperson confirmed that Kirk was shot but said his condition was unknown, KTVX noted, adding that the spokesperson said a suspect actually was not in custody.

At 1:37 p.m., UVU announced that the campus was closed and classes were canceled until further notice, KTVX reported, adding that all students were ordered to leave the school immediately.

At 2:40 p.m., President Donald Trump confirmed that Kirk was dead, KTVX said. Trump announced the following on Truth Social, "The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!"

The Associated Press said a single shot was fired from a rooftop. UVU spokeswoman Ellen Treanor told the Wall Street Journal, "We think the shot was fired from the Losee Center building, which is about 200 yards from the courtyard where Charlie Kirk was speaking."

FBI Director Kash Patel later on Wednesday posted the following updates on X, after which the AP complained on its live feed that "it wasn’t immediately clear whether anyone remained in custody, or if the shooter was still at large as law enforcement provided evolving and difficult-to-reconcile information."

Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said at a news conference Thursday morning that "a couple of persons of interest were located" in the shooting aftermath. However, after officials interviewed them, Mason said they were cleared of suspicion and were released. Mason urged the public "to be patient with the investigative process" and said the pair unjustly "faced scrutiny" and "threats" and "don't deserve that harassment."

KTVX said George Zinn was the first individual taken into custody and Zachariah Qureshi was the second individual taken into custody; the station echoed Mason's report, saying both of them were released. However, the New York Times, citing officials, said Zinn was booked and accused of obstruction of justice.

By 7:54 p.m., the Utah Department of Public Safety confirmed that a manhunt was under way for the shooting suspect, KTVX said.

What has happened so far Thursday?

At Thursday morning's news conference, Mason said Kirk's body was "moved to the state office of the medical examiner" on Wednesday night and that "we'll continue to facilitate movements to get him home today with his family."

Mason also announced some "breakthroughs" in the investigation.

He said officials were able to track the shooting suspect's movements starting at 11:52 a.m. Wednesday when the individual arrived on campus — and all the way through "stairwells" and to the roof "across from the shooting location." Mason said the individual "jumped off" the building and "fled" from the campus and "into a neighborhood."

Mason added that investigators spoke to people in the neighborhood to see if any of them have doorbell cameras.

He also emphasized that "we have good video" of the individual in question but that it won't be released "at this time." Mason said investigators are using technology to identify the shooting suspect and that "we will catch this individual."

Around 10 a.m. local time Thursday, the FBI in Salt Lake City posted the following on X:

— (@)

Robert Bohls, FBI special agent in charge at the Salt Lake City Field Office, added during Thursday morning's news conference that investigators "recovered" what they believe "is the weapon" used in Kirk's assassination. Bohls said it's a "high-powered, bolt-action rifle" found in a "wooded area" and that an FBI lab is analyzing it.

Bohls also said a "footwear impression, palm print, and forearm imprints" are being analyzed as well. He also said members of the public can submit their own "video or images" related to the shooting to the agency's digital media website — www.fbi.gov/utahvalleyshooting — or call 800-CALL-FBI.

Mason said the individual they're after "blended in well" with the university and "appears to be of college age."

Video: Grandmother is alone on her front porch during day when male comes up, asks for directions. That's not what he wants.

Jan Fletcher, 78, was alone during the day recently when her home surveillance camera captured a young male getting off his bike, walking up her driveway, and approaching her on the porch of her south Louisville home, WLKY-TV reported.

The male asks Fletcher, "Is somebody in there? I don't want to wake them. Is somebody in there?"

Fletcher responds, "Yeah. Why?"

'She didn't deserve that.'

The station said the male was asking for directions to a well-known neighborhood park. But then he got all the way on the porch, walked behind Fletcher, and acted as though he was dusting something off her rear end.

But the situation grew scarier.

RELATED: Young girls escape molester by kicking him in the groin at Fourth of July celebration, police say

WLKY said the male repeatedly and violently groped Fletcher until she was able to stop him.

“I was so mad that it happened,” Fletcher recalled to the station during an on-camera interview. “I was thinking, 'What could I have done different?' But I don't know what I could have done differently.”

Her granddaughter Jessica Powell-Page was understandably horrified and told WLKY that "she didn't deserve that" and that the incident was "unacceptable.”

Louisville police told the station they're investigating the incident but haven't yet identified the male.

Despite the disturbing encounter, Fletcher noted to WLKY that she's lived in her neighborhood for 55 years and has felt safe — and that she's not going anywhere.

“I've been asked if I'm afraid to sit here on my porch, and I’m not,” she noted to the station defiantly. “I want him to know you're not scaring me. Absolutely not. So every day that it's nice weather, I will be on my porch.”

Louisville police told WLKY that "the elderly are often the victims of scams, harassment, and home invasion, which often start with suspicious questions at the door." Police also offered the following tips, the station said:

Trust your instincts. If a person or situation makes you feel uneasy, trust your gut feeling. Acknowledge the potential threat and take action to stay safe.
Take note of your surroundings. Pay attention to potential hiding spots for an attacker, such as alleys, doorways, large bushes, or between parked vans. When walking past these areas, give them a wide berth.
Look for warning signs. Stay alert for suspicious behaviors, like someone following you on foot or in a vehicle. If you notice this, change directions, cross the street, or enter a business to signal that you have noticed them.

WLKY added that those with information regarding the incident can offer anonymous tips at 502-574-5673.

Man gunned down in ER after he, girlfriend had altercation with shooter outside hospital: Police

A man is dead, and a woman was wounded after a shooter opened fire at them Wednesday night in a hospital emergency room in Tacoma, Washington, KIRO-TV reported.

Tacoma police said the apparent targeted attack took place just after 7 p.m. inside the emergency room of MultiCare Allenmore Hospital on South Union Avenue, the station said.

'I know that she's pretty shaken up because her boyfriend, I guess, like, pushed her out of the way, so she just watched him get shot pretty bad, you know.'

The female victim — a 21-year-old — was grazed by gunfire and is recovering, but her boyfriend was killed in the shooting, KIRO reported.

Medical workers attempted lifesaving efforts before the man was pronounced dead, the Seattle Times reported.

Police said the couple got into a fight with the suspect outside the hospital prior to the shooting, the station said, after which the suspect followed them into the ER and opened fire.

It's not clear if the fight prior to the shooting was verbal, physical, or both.

"I know that she's pretty shaken up because her boyfriend, I guess, like, pushed her out of the way, so she just watched him get shot pretty bad, you know," the female victim's uncle told KIRO in an exclusive interview. "I'm more worried about her mental and emotional state right now, more than anything."

In a statement released Wednesday night, a MultiCare Allenmore official told the station the hospital was on restricted access due to the shooting; by Thursday morning, the hospital was operating normally.

"The emergency department is open for walk-ins, but the waiting room remains closed due to a police investigation," the statement reads, according to KIRO. "Ambulances are still being diverted."

No hospital workers were hurt in the shooting, police told the Times.

Detectives and crime scene technicians were actively investigating the shooting as a homicide, police told the station, adding that no arrests have been made as of early Thursday morning.

Police on Thursday didn't immediately reply to Blaze News' questions regarding the shooter's physical description, if the couple knew the shooter, what sparked the altercation before the shooting, or what kind of gun the shooter used.
