Gun-toting homeowner confronts 2 males accused of breaking into cars, and 1 suspect advances toward homeowner. Dumb move.

A gun-toting homeowner confronted two males accused of breaking into cars in Columbus, Georgia, over the weekend — and when one of the suspects advanced toward the homeowner, the homeowner opened fire.

Police said officers were dispatched at 12:01 a.m. Saturday to a residence in the Benning Hills area regarding two males breaking into vehicles.

Officers found another pistol inside the suspects' vehicle along with more than 40 grams of marijuana, police said.

Authorities said the homeowner confronted the suspects, and one of the suspects advanced toward the homeowner, after which the homeowner shot the suspect.

Both suspects fled the scene in a vehicle to a nearby gas station, police said.

Officers at 12:03 a.m. were dispatched to the Circle K on Victory Drive and North Lumpkin Road regarding a male — later identified as 18-year-old Deonte Smith — who entered store with a gunshot wound, police said.

Officers responded to the scene, and Smith was taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition, police said.

The second suspect — a 17-year-old male — was taken into custody with a stolen firearm in his possession, police said.

Officers found another pistol inside the suspects' vehicle along with more than 40 grams of marijuana, police said.

The 17-year-old was charged with entering auto, receiving stolen property (firearm), possession of a firearm during commission of a crime, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug-related objects, loitering, and credit card theft, police said.

Police said they obtained warrants for Smith, who will be transported to the Muscogee County Jail upon his released from the hospital. Police said Smith will be charged as well but didn't say what Smith will be charged with.

How are observers reacting?

A number of commenters shared their reactions underneath the police department's Facebook post about the incident. Here are a few of them:

 • "The homeowner should be given a 'stand your ground' award!!" one commenter wrote.
 • "Great job officers and great job to [the] homeowner for protecting what is his," another commenter shared.
 • "Good for the homeowner," another commenter said. "Two more thugs off the streets."
 • "Nice to get a couple of thieves off the streets...and homeowners protecting their ground!!" another commenter declared. "Great job."

‘I’ll End Every Relationship That You Have’: Congressman Threatens Staffer Over Alleged Comments Made About His Family

'You f*ck with my family, I’ll end every relationship that you have. Every single friend'

Angry DC police chief says black man fatally shot black teen amid 4 a.m. confrontation over car break-ins, blasts 'misinformation,' 'allegations centered around race'

Robert Contee, chief of police in Washington, D.C., was visibly angry during a Tuesday news conference during which he confirmed that the homeowner who fatally shot a 13-year-old black male amid a 4 a.m. confrontation over car break-ins also is black — and that "misinformation" about the case and "allegations centered around race" are putting innocent people in danger.

Specifically, WTTG-TV reported that a group posted a photo of a white man and a picture of Karon Blake — the teen who was fatally shot — implying that the white man is the one who pulled the trigger.

"The fact that there’s misinformation swirling out there, and people are tying it to race and other things and putting images of innocent people out there next to young Karon saying that 'this is the person that’s responsible for that' — that’s reckless, and that’s dangerous," Contee said with a raised voice. "Imagine if that was your picture beside his, and people showed up at your house with half information. That’s unacceptable."

He also said "people are making allegations centered around race, and that is wrong" and emphasized that "spreading of inaccurate information is dangerous, reckless, and has the potential to adversely impact the investigation and the relationships in our community."

What's the background?

WTTG said in a video report that's part of its original story that the unidentified homeowner confronted Blake and two other juveniles in the 1000 block of Quincy Street in the northeast section of the nation's capital after seeing cars being broken into just before 4 a.m. Saturday.

The station said Blake was shot multiple times, and there was no indication he was armed. But investigators said arriving officers found the homeowner performing CPR on the teen, who was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Police also found a car on Quincy Street that had been reported stolen, and cops believe the 13-year-old used it, the station said.

Investigators believe two other juveniles were also involved in the incident, WTTG said, adding that a neighbor in the area said those two juveniles tried fleeing the scene in a vehicle before bailing out in an alley and running off.

Investigators said the homeowner is cooperating with authorities and that the gun used in the shooting is legally registered, WTTG reported, adding in a separate story that the homeowner possesses a registered concealed carry permit.

Contee did not say 911 was called before the shooting, but he identified the man who pulled the trigger as the person who notified police, WTTG noted in its story about the chief's press conference.

The station also said Contee wouldn't share any information about what happened after the man confronted the teen or how he described the moments leading up to the fired shots.

At the press conference, WTTG asked Contee what could make this shooting legally justifiable when it's illegal to use lethal force amid a property crime in D.C. — and he replied that "the person has to be in fear of their life or the life of another."

Furious residents sound off at community meeting

Hundreds of people showed up Tuesday night to a community meeting, sounding off about the shooting and demanding answers about the shooting and the identity of the man who pulled the trigger, WTTG said in a separate story.

"He should’ve been taken into custody. He should’ve been questioned, and we should have the identity right now," one woman said, according to the station.

The Associated Press said area resident Tracey Lucas during the meeting accused police of being soft in the face of what she said was vigilante violence against a young black man — and even compared the shooting to the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman.

“I don’t see why you are protecting his name,” Lucas said, according to the AP. “Knowing who the killer is does not breach this investigation.”

Before Contee's news conference, WTTG said it spoke with a man who identified himself as Blake's paternal grandfather.

"It’s just sad," Sean Long told the station. "It don’t make no sense. ... I know kids out here wild’n out. They killing each other, black-on-black crime, but getting into a car or taking someone out of a person’s car, you don’t deserve to get killed."

Long added to WTTG that "to take law in your own hands and just kill him because he out there messing around in a car — he out here stealing something out the store, he out here busting out the car window — that don’t mean he deserves to get killed. Okay, there’s a lot of kids doing wrong. I did wrong when I was young, I ain’t die. It just don’t make sense. A lot of people comment saying, ‘Yeah they was breaking into cars. They doing this and that – they doing that stuff,’ but you can’t kill a person for that. And you can’t kill a person because [you] have a gun permit."

Anything else?

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser in a Wednesday press conference said the man who fatally shot Blake is a city employee who has been placed on administrative leave and that he's not a police officer or involved in public safety, the AP reported.

13-year-old male fatally shot by DC homeowner who confronted him, 2 other juveniles about car break-ins at 4 a.m.; cops believe teen used stolen car found nearby

A 13-year-old male was fatally shot by a Washington, D.C., homeowner who confronted him and two other juveniles about car break-ins around 4 a.m. Saturday, WTTG-TV reported, adding that police believe the shot teen used a stolen car found nearby.

What are the details?

The station said in its video report that the unidentified homeowner confronted the teen — identified as Karon Blake — and two other juveniles in the 1000 block of Quincy Street in the northeast section of the nation's capital after seeing cars being broken into.

Police did not release specific details about the confrontation, WTTG said, but added that the teen was shot multiple times, and there was no indication he was armed.

The station said there's no indication of who placed the 911 call reporting the incident, but investigators said arriving officers found the homeowner performing CPR on the teen, who was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Investigators added that the homeowner is cooperating with authorities, and that the gun used in the shooting is legally registered, WTTG reported.

Police also found a car on Quincy Street that had been reported stolen, and cops believe the 13-year-old used it, the station said.

Investigators believe two other juveniles also were involved in the incident, WTTG said, adding that a neighbor in the area said those two juveniles tried fleeing the scene in a vehicle before bailing out in an alley and running off.

Will the homeowner be charged?

Authorities are working to determine if any criminal charges are warranted against the homeowner, the station said.

WTTG said in a separate story that officials are working with the U.S. Attorney's Office to determine if there will be charges.

The station noted that the community calls for transparency and accountability are growing louder.

"I'm at a loss for words as to what would possess a resident to take matters into their own hands and take the life of a young person," Ward 5 council member Zachary Parker — who's been in office for a week — told WTTG.

Parker remarked to the station "how little information is being released about the person that took Karon's life," and that he's joining with neighbors and calling on police to release information and hold the individual accountable.

Parker added to the Washington Post that he has “deep concerns about neighbors taking justice into their own hands" and that "our young people deserve long lives with the opportunity to dream big. Healthy communities are safe communities, where we all work together to care for one another and invest in everyone’s well-being.”

D.C. council member Christina Henderson tweeted that she would check in with D.C. Public Schools and the Department of Behavioral Health to ensure that Brookland Middle School — where Karon attended — has proper support, WRC-TV reported.

"Property is not greater than life. Karon should be alive today," Henderson tweeted.

“Property is not greater than life. Karon should be alive today.

I’m checking in with DCPS and the Dept of Behavioral Health to make sure the Brookland MS community has the appropriate support in the days and months ahead.”

Anything else?

The middle school's principal in an email to parents described Karon as a quiet and inquisitive sixth grader who loved football and fashion and said he leaves behind his mother and three sisters, WTTG said.

Brookland Middle School was to honor Karon's life Monday, the station added, and mental health services will be available for both staff and students this week.

Angry activist gets in Ted Cruz's face at Houston restaurant over guns, gets restrained and dragged out. He smiled in photo with Cruz before ambushing him.

An angry activist got in U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz's face at a Houston restaurant after his address Friday at the National Rifle Association convention; the activist had to be restrained before he was dragged out of the establishment.

What are the details?

The activist asked the Texas Republican for a photo, and the two were smiling and arm in arm:

But the activist — identified by Insider as Benjamin Hernandez — quickly turned the photo op into an ambush and lit into Cruz over Tuesday's massacre of students and teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas:

Hernandez asked Cruz to talk to him about "background checks," kept speaking when the senator tried to answer, and after Cruz finally was able to say "background checks wouldn't have stopped the shooter," Hernandez got more animated, waving his hands in the air as he said with a raised voice, "We can make it harder for people to get guns in this country!"

Cruz told the activist "you combine ignorance with hatred," and "you don't know what you're talking about." Soon a few men who appeared to be security stepped between Cruz and Hernandez; but the activist began to resist and lunge forward as they slowly dragged him from the eatery.

It's quite a thing to see how close angry people can get to an elected official like Cruz, especially in times like these. One wonders if Democratic senators like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer would have minded such treatment from a conservative.

As he was dragged away, Hernandez hollered, "Why did you speak tonight? Why did you come here to the convention to take blood money? Why, when 19 children died? Nineteen children died! That's on your hands! That's on your hands!"

Here's the clip:

The activist speaks

Hernandez — an independent who ran for Congress in 2018 — is a board member of Indivisible Houston, a political advocacy group, which posted the Twitter video of him confronting Cruz, Insider reported.

Hernandez told the outlet he was in the restaurant when he saw Cruz walk in and added that he asked Cruz if he would pose for a photo after the senator finished his dinner — but Cruz got up right away.

"As a constituent, you know, he refuses to allow us to engage him in open public forums. So this is one of the ways we can reach him," Hernandez told the outlet. "I'd never done anything like this before."

Hernandez added to Insider, "In that moment, I'm like, 'I have to do this because there are people that are really suffering.' And if it takes ... making Ted Cruz uncomfortable while he's having dinner, I mean, that's just the price of it."

The activist also told the outlet that while confronting Cruz, he was thinking of the parents of the slain children, as well as his own child.

"I'm a new father. I have a child. This hits different. Like, I just want to know what are you doing as a senator? And what things can you support?" Hernandez told Insider. "I'm like, 'Can you just answer the question? Like, where do you stand? What do you bring to the table?"

Hernandez added to the outlet that if politicians continue to avoid action on mass shootings, "we have to confront them."

"The moment is now," Hernandez told Insider. "They're always gonna say, 'Now is not the time'... But you know what, it is the time. Now is the time to stop the next one."

The outlet said a Cruz spokesperson on Saturday didn't immediately respond its request for comment and that an automated message from Cruz's senate office said his voicemail was full.

Remember when?

This wasn't the first time Cruz felt the left's wrath in a restaurant. In September 2018 a leftist mob made headlines by harassing Cruz and his wife in a Washington, D.C., restaurant. Afterward a left-wing group posted video of the incident with a chilling promise to Cruz, then-President Donald Trump, then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and “right-wing scum” in general: “You are not safe. We will find you.”

Ah, but it was the season of such behavior, as other conservative figures were kicked out of restaurants and heckled and even punched. Then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife were accosted at a restaurant, too, but other patrons stood up for the couple.

Some might conclude that U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters of California got the ball rollling in June 2018 by infamously ranting to supporters to “create a crowd” and “push back on” members of Trump’s cabinet if they’re seen “in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station.” She added in her speech — fueled by anger over Trump's immigration stances — “You tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”

“Maxine Waters calls for attacks on Trump administration: "If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere."”

Dad confronts violent thug for stealing his 13-year-old daughter's Canadian flag amid Ottawa protests. Culprit ends up whimpering as cops handcuff him.

A dad recorded video of his confrontation with a violent man who stole a Canadian flag from his 13-year-old daughter amid continuing protests in Ottawa over the weekend.

What are the details?

According to a video from Peter van Oordt — the father of the girl in question — he, his wife, and his two children were visiting Ottawa as the protests against COVID-19 restrictions were in full swing.

He said in the clip that the man walked up behind his family while they were near city hall and snatched the flag and flagpole from his daughter and ran off hollering obscenities at them.

But van Oordt pursued the man, hit record on his phone, and captured everything that happened next — including a tense scene as another individual began pulling the flag pole from the thief, after which the crook got the upper hand and shoved him away after yelling, "Get out of my f***ing city!"

But van Oordt continued to pursue the flag thief and captured video of their on-foot chat: "Why did you steal the flag from my 13-year-old daughter?"

At one point the flag thief takes a swipe at van Oordt and steals his gloves — after apparently trying to grab his phone — and stomps on van Oordt's gloves in a slush-filled gutter.

Seconds later the flag thief comes at van Oordt, and video doesn't capture exactly what happened, as the camera was jostled around — but the crook ends up on his back atop a snowbank, moaning in pain.

Van Oordt said in his video that "I believe in peace" and that he "didn't engage with him physically" even when the flag thief went directly after him.

Eventually cops arrive after a bystander calls authorities. Van Oordt tells officers he believes the man had been drinking. Another bystander tells van Oordt he saw the whole thing and would be a witness if he needed one; another man tells police the flag thief earlier assaulted an Uber driver.

Soon cops arrest the whimpering man, who claims his ankle is broken — and admits to officers that "I took somebody's flag, that's it."

Here's the video explanation from van Oordt showing his confrontation with the flag thief as well as his commentary on it.

Waitress abducted, beaten, tossed from vehicle after confronting diners who left restaurant without paying $70 bill

A waitress was abducted, beaten, and tossed from a vehicle after she confronted a group of diners who left a New Jersey "family restaurant" without paying their $70 bill Saturday night, WPVI-TV reported.

What are the details?

Washington Township police said five suspects attempted to leave a Nifty Fifty's restaurant without paying at about 11:15 p.m., and a waitress tried to stop them — only to be pulled inside a white Dodge Durango and assaulted as the vehicle drove off.

Surveillance video shows the 20-year-old waitress, dressed in a red shirt, exiting the restaurant and running toward the vehicle in question — only to get pulled inside it, WPVI reported.

"They pulled her into the vehicle and assaulted her inside the vehicle," Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik told WPVI.

A passenger also appears to exit the vehicle and run off as the abduction takes place.

What happened next?

"The vehicle headed north on Route 42, made a U-turn, and was heading south toward Monroe Township, and pushed her out of the vehicle," Gurcsik added to the station.

Image source: Washington Township (N.J.) police

Washington Township is about 30 minutes south of Philadelphia.

The waitress was able to run back to the restaurant and call authorities, police told WPVI, which added that she was taken to a local hospital with bruises and a possible concussion and then released.

Image source: Washington Township (N.J.) police

"They're having trouble finding wait staff due to the pandemic, and she came out to confront them," Gurcsik also told the station.

'Say it ain't so'

John Hill, a Nifty Fifty's employee, told WPVI he's shocked by the incident.

"Say it ain't so," Hill told the station. "As an employee, that makes me feel bad. And mad."

WPVI added that restaurant customers the following evening said they were shocked by the incident.

"This is such a family restaurant; oh, this is crazy," Stacie Garris-Oliver of Lindenwold, N.J., told the station.

Anything else?

Police told WPVI that restaurant employees should try to take down license plate information of those who leave the premises without paying for their meals.

"Do not chase after accused suspects and confront them yourselves," Gurcsik told the station.

'Don't you dare start this s**t!': Lone man furiously stands up to mob of left-wing militants gathered in front of police in Brooklyn Center

A lone man was caught on video furiously confronting a large group of left-wing militants gathered in front of police Wednesday night in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, where protests and riots have ensued nightly since the police-involved fatal shooting of Daunte Wright over the weekend.

What are the details?

Independent journalist Brendan Gutenschwager posted the clip on Twitter and said the man "briefly tried taming the line of umbrellas" and stood "between them and police" and was "discouraging agitation" of officers.

It isn't clear who the man is or exactly why he's angry at the militants, but leftist protesters toting their umbrellas to hide their identities have long inflicted violence upon others in the streets and damaged and destroyed property.

"Don't you dare start this s**t!" he yelled at the group, grabbing one of the umbrellas and pointing his finger through the opening. "Not here tonight! Not here tonight!"

At one point the man's body shook as he clenched his fists and jumped in place while screaming at the mob:

Image source: Twitter video screenshot via @BGOnTheScene

One of the militants hollered back at the man that "they're the ones that are starting that s**t!" presumably in reference to police. Another militant who sounded like a female yelled at the man, "Yo! Get the f*** outta here!"

Another militant questioned why the group should be "peaceful" and then screamed at police, "There's no such thing as f***ing peaceful! You f***ing killed from the beginning, bro! F*** you!"

The man began trying to engage the latter militant when the clip ended.

How did folks react?

Some commenters reacting to the clip didn't like the man's stance ("a false preacher preaching lies"), while others expressed support for his actions and contempt for the militants:

 • "That guy is brave as s**t," one commenter noted.
 • "White Antifa [millennials] can't stand a black man talking back," one user declared.
 • "Brooklyn Center population 30K plus. Where's the other 29,999 to stand with this man," another commenter wrote. "I believe you have these idiots outnumbered folks!"
 • "Bless that man trying to defuse all of those angry protesters from the police," another user said. "Wished they would listen to him."
 • "Can't help but notice the white voices screaming at him," another commenter observed. "I think for some it's a sport, sadly, which is not what it should be about."
 • "Telling a black man 'Yo, get the f*** out of here' for those that are there in support of Black Lives Matter," another user noticed. "What a world we live in."
 • "After the dust has settled, these Antifa clowns will be back in Seattle or Portland, [and] this man will be in Minneapolis cleaning up the mess these pricks left," another user opined. "All for the sake of racial justice."
