While there are many who believe that gender is a vast, seemingly never-ending spectrum, others are standing firm in the belief that it’s binary.
Vivek Ramaswamy, 2024 presidential candidate for the Republican Party, is one of them.
He made this clear in a recent appearance on NBC’s "Meet the Press" with Chuck Todd.
“Are you confident that you know that gender is as binary as you’re describing it? Are you confident that it isn’t a spectrum?” Todd asks Vivek.
Todd continues to interrupt Vivek who tries to get his science-based response out while Todd adds, “There’s a lot of scientific research out there that says gender is a spectrum.”
“Chuck, I respectfully disagree. Gender dysphoria, for most of our history, all the way through the DSM-5 has been characterized as a mental health disorder, and I don’t think it’s compassionate to affirm that. I think that’s cruelty,” Vivek finally gets out.
“When a kid is crying out for help, what they’re asking for is, you gotta ask the question of ‘what else is going wrong at home?’ ‘What else is going wrong at school?’” Vivek continues.
“Let’s be compassionate and get to the heart of that rather than playing this game as though we’re actually changing our medical understanding for the last time,” Ramaswamy said.
Dave Rubin thinks Vivek handled Todd with excellence.
“Vivek did a nice job using trademark science,” Rubin says.
“I like giving the devil his due and when you do good work and you confront these guys and call them out on their nonsense,” Rubin says.
“That was a nice job of just clean, clear explanation by Vivek.”

W.E.B. Du Bois famously said that the problem of the 20th century was the problem of the color line.
We celebrated Dr. King’s birthday yesterday to acknowledge everything he did to help the country resolve that problem. Now we have a much different threat to confront.
The problem of the 21st century will be the rejection of the gender binary.
In less than 10 years, the mainstream position on sex and gender has shifted radically. Caitlyn Jenner is out of the closet. All of the people who believe in biology have taken his place inside.
The same people who have spent over a year telling the public to “trust the science” when it comes to masks choose to ignore the science when it comes to human anatomy. They also police speech with ruthless aggression. One wrong pronoun can get a person fired or fined.
Here’s the truth, whether you're grounded in Genesis or genetics: There are only two sexes — male and female. Conditions like intersexuality don’t change that norm; they reinforce it.
So how did we get to the point where basic biology is treated as heresy?
The Bible provides a clear explanation: “For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.” –Romans 1:21-22
Our folly comes at a high price.
This issue gets the most attention when it comes to athletics. Names like Lia Thomas, Cece Telfer, and Fallon Fox are familiar to some sports fans. But the single most important job of one generation is to create the next generation. How can people who are confused about the definitions of “man” and “woman” make a new generation?
What hope does a country have when its most educated and powerful people use terms like “birthing person” and the masses nod along in agreement like sheep?
What is exceptional about a country in which headlines like “Transgender man gives birth after ‘Grindr one-night stand’ while transitioning” and “He gave birth. He breastfed. Now, he wants his son to see him as a man” run in major publications?
How long does a civilization have before total collapse when the following quote is accepted as normal?
“A month into pregnancy, Schade met his current husband, Jordan, 28. Eight months later, Ronan was born in October 2020. Now the pair are raising the child together, with the support of friends, the trans community and the Satanic Temple church, of which he’s a member.”
How much have our views on the body and the family changed when the featured Father’s Day essay on CNN in 2018 included this quote?
“But when it comes to lessons learned as a toddler, there are some things Sabastion wants to teach Jaxen, father to son. One of them is how to pee standing up – something Sabastion does with the help of a detachable prosthetic.”
We are in a battle for truth. If we lose this, there is no telling how bad things will get.
In his last speech before his assassination, Dr. King said he’d been to the mountaintop. He said he didn’t fear any man and wasn’t concerned about how long he lived because he just wanted to do God’s will.
We need that type of fearlessness.
My desire to return to our senses on gender is rooted in a desire to do God’s will. The lie that gender is all about feelings dishonors God’s intricate design of men and women. Encouraging people to embrace that lie is neither loving nor kind.
The enforcement of the color line determined the society our ancestors endured. Our fight for the gender binary will determine the society our descendants inherit.
We need to be willing to tell the truth even if people hate us and call us names. If not, America will have a generation of confused, depressed, and mutilated children who wish we had been willing to die on our hill.Even as questions surrounding gender identity and biological sex have swirled in the U.S. in recent years, most Americans still hold to the belief that there are only two genders.
The large majority of Americans — 75% to be exact — still agree that there are "only two genders," male and female, with 63% strongly agreeing, according to the results of a new Rasmussen Reports survey released Monday.
Eighteen percent of respondents, however, disagreed with the statement. The poll was conducted Dec. 21-22 and interviewed 1,000 American adults.
The lopsided results could catch some observers by surprise considering the onslaught of lecturing Americans have received from the progressive left regarding gender identity issues in the U.S. over the past several years.
Progressive transgender ideology, which holds the male-female gender binary to be discriminatory, has leaked into nearly every facet of American life, sparking debate on issues ranging from gender pronouns to public restroom use to whether or not hormone therapy and sex-change surgery should be allowed for children. Social media giant Facebook allows users to select from a list of 58 gender identity options.
Americans have debated the fairness of transgender athletes (biological males) competing in women's sports, as well, and public figures — such as comedian Dave Chappelle and "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling — have been denounced for daring to scrutinize the absurdity of transgenderism.
Yet despite the progressive push, majorities in every political category — including Democrats, Republicans, and independents — agreed that there are only two genders. Nearly 50% of Democrats and 60% of independents said they strongly agreed with the statement.
The general unison continued from there into the particular hot-button issue of counseling schoolchildren about gender identity without parental consent.
The Rasmussen survey reportedly found that a hefty 80% of Republicans, 54% of Democrats, and 72% of those unaffiliated with either major party were "opposed to schools counseling children on gender identity without informing parents." Taken together, 68% of respondents said they were opposed to counseling without parental knowledge.
Respondents were slightly less comfortable with how public the debate has become. When asked specifically about Rowling's public comments supporting the gender binary, 58% sided with her, while 17% characterized her comments as a "hate crime." The remaining 25% said they weren't sure.
Girls will no longer be called "girls" at Boston's all-girls Winsor School, according to website Legal Insurrection.
The school, which boasts a hefty approximately $54,000 annual tuition, recently adopted a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement that aims to move away from gendered language such as "she, her, hers," "daughter," and more.
The school's "Lift Every Voice" initiative states that while the school remains committed to its mission to help "young women" pursue their academic and professional dreams, it is implementing the new statement to recognize the apparent importance of all staff and students using inclusive language.
According to the outlet, the plan states, “External publications and communications have moved away from using ‘she, her, hers’’ and ‘your daughter,’ replacing the former with ‘they, them, theirs’ and the latter with ‘student.’ ... Faculty and staff are discouraged from addressing groups of students as ‘girls’ and ‘ladies.’”
The report noted that the school also plans to change its implemented grammar curriculum to accept "they" as a singular pronoun.
Formerly known as parent conferences, such meetings are now called the "adult family member interview" instead of "parent/guardian interview."
Winsor director of community and inclusion Julian Braxton said that the school has been serious about its inclusivity since 1999.
“We had something at that time called Community Curriculum Day, which was a day devoted to talking about some diversity and inclusion issues,” Braxton said. “The topic was white heterosexual privilege — and that was another example of Winsor being willing to have difficult, uncomfortable, important, challenging conversations.”
Despite the language efforts, the Winsor Twitter account still says it is “an independent day school for girls in grades 5 through 12."
At the time of this reporting, the school's home page continues to read, "Empowering girls to lead lives of purpose."

An Ivy League-educated Democratic lawmaker in Texas claimed recently that "modern science" recognizes many more than just two biological sexes.
"In fact, there are six," said Texas state Rep. James Talarico, a former English teacher who holds a master's degree in education policy from Harvard University.
Talarico made the stunning remarks during a committee hearing on Texas House Bill 4042, a measure which aims to ban transgender athletes from competing in girls' K-12 sports, the Washington Times reported.
Before the public testimony at the hearing, Talarico reportedly attempted to correct the bill's sponsor, Republican state Rep. Cole Hefner, on the number of biological sexes assumed in the legislation's text.
"The bill seems to think there are two," he said. "The one thing I want us to all be aware of recognize is that modern science obviously recognizes that there are many more than two biological sexes. In fact, there are six, which honestly, Rep. Hefner, surprised me, too."
He then reportedly went on to educate his fellow committee members on the "six really common biological sexes," explaining there are not only XX (female) and XY (male), but also single X, XXY, XYY, and XXXY.
"The point is that biologically speaking, scientifically speaking, sex is a spectrum, and oftentimes can be very ambiguous," Talarico said, according to the Times.

Later in the hearing, Save Women's Sports President Beth Stelzer, who was present to testify in defense of the bill, passionately rebutted Talarico's claims.
She reportedly cited several scientific studies proving that "the male advantage is immutable and that there are in fact two sexes they're dimorphic, XX/XY.
"The other quote 'sexes' mentioned are disorders of sexual development that are variants of XX or XY chromosome," she said. "They are still disorders of male or female."
"If it wasn't recorded, you wouldn't believe us," wrote the nonprofit organization in a Twitter post that included video of the exchange. Save Women's Sports was founded to protect women's sports from unfair male participation.
Amazingly, during his remarks, Talarico even acknowledged that he is "not well versed in this issue area," joking, "I'm not a scientist, I'm a politician, [which is] a lot worse than a scientist."
The National Institutes of Health reports that "sex chromosome variations" are "not inherited and occur due to a random error during the formation of reproductive cells (eggs and sperm) in a parent."
Such variations often result in significant health and physical abnormalities, the public health agency added.
"The most common numeric sex chromosome variations include Turner syndrome (45, X); 47, XXY (which usually causes features of Klinefelter syndrome); 47, XYY; and 47, XXX (trisomy X)," according to NIH. "In some cases, individuals have some cells with the usual 2 sex chromosomes, and some cells with extra or missing sex chromosomes; this is called chromosomal mosaicism."
After CNN ran a report on Tuesday about transgender rights in which it claimed it's "not possible to know a person's gender identity at birth" and "there is no consensus criteria for assigning sex at birth," Republican Sen. John Kennedy (La.) decided to stop by Fox News's "Tucker Carlson Tonight" to elucidate the complicated matter.
"I can't believe we're discussing this, Tucker," Kennedy said before delving into a quick biology lesson. "The person who wrote that is entitled to his opinion, but in my opinion, I think he's been in lockdown too long.
"Sex is the language we use to describe reproduction," he said. "In humans, there are only two sexes — male and female. Males have the potential to produce sperm; females have the potential to produce ova. These are observable physical characteristics. Sex is not a spectrum. It's binary; you're either male or female."
Then for a moment the senator refrained from piling onto CNN, noting that gender dysphoria — a condition in which a person feels a sense of discomfort, stress, or confusion about their assigned gender — does exist. But, Kennedy noted, that is the outlier and not the rule.
"Now, I do believe that gender dysphoria exists. It's rare, maybe one in 30,000 males, one in 100,000 females," he said. "Gender dysphoria is not an observable physical characteristic. It's an internal feeling. It's an internal feeling that a person of one sex has when he internally identifies with another sex."
Shortly after that, the folkie, quick-witted senator stated more clearly, "It's very easy to tell a boy from a girl. A boy has a penis, a girl has a vagina. Those are physical characteristics."

Fox News host Tucker Carlson complimented Kennedy for his explanation on the subject, calling it the "clearest" and most "reasonable" explanation of reality he had heard in a while.
Also during the interview, Kennedy explained why the Equality Act — recently passed by the Democratic-controlled House — is so dangerous.
It's not about whether there are more than two sexes, the senator argued, claiming that fact is "clearly settled." Rather it's about "power and government."
"It's about to what extent are the American people willing to give government, the bureaucracy, the managerial elite the authority to regulate every aspect of our lives — education, religion, public accommodation, speech — in order to elevate the status of those who either have or claim to have gender dysphoria," he said.
"For example," he continued. "To what extent are Americans willing to give government the authority to require schools to make teenage girls in a junior high locker room, shower and change clothes with a biological boy who either has or claims to have gender dysphoria? To what extent are Americans willing to give government the authority to require all women's sports programs to make women compete with much stronger biological males who identify or claim to identify with females?"
