Florida sheriff's office under fire for posting 9-year-old male's mug shot on Facebook after his felony arrest

Florida authorities arrested a 9-year-old male last Thursday after they say he brought a knife into his elementary school the day before and threatened classmates with it.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said during one incident the suspect got into a fight with a victim during recess at Middleton-Burney Elementary School in Crescent City, and the victim told deputies the suspect said he was going to stab him and pulled a pocketknife from his backpack. The victim told deputies he ran and told a teacher.

'We have not had any repeat offenders since we have put this in place.'

Another victim told deputies that the suspect tapped him on the shoulder on the playground, and when the victim turned around, the suspect had an open knife in his hand. The victim told deputies he ran away out of fear and tripped, after which the suspect stopped chasing him and walked away.

Another student told deputies the suspect walked over to her and showed her a knife and asked her not to tell teachers; she added that the suspect walked over to another child and "flicked open the knife" and pointed it at the child’s stomach. Authorities said that child was unable to be identified.

In the end, the sheriff's office said deputies arrested the 9-year-old suspect and took him to the Putnam County Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, officials said, adding that he was booked and then released to a parent until his court date.

However, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office is getting backlash for posting the suspect's mug shot on Facebook. The sheriff's office also named the young arrestee in the post.

About 48,000 comments have followed as of Thursday morning. Here's what some opponents of the mug shot posting have had to say:

  • "I don’t agree with this at all," one commenter said. "While I absolutely do not support his behavior or bringing a weapon to school, this is still a 9-year-old child. Arresting him, taking a mugshot, and publicly posting it like this can cause lasting psychological harm. At this age, the focus should be on intervention, counseling, and protection, not criminalizing him in a way that could follow him for life. There should be statutes in place to protect children this young, this feels more like trauma and child abuse than justice."
  • "Posting a 9 YEAR OLD'S mugshot?!" another commenter exclaimed.
  • "Yeah. I'm all about shaming criminals. But that's a little far," another commenter noted. "He's still a baby and needs guidance not [shame]. That will only reinforce forms of hate and mistrust. Post his parents and get him help and positive encouragement."
  • "Since when does law enforcement [show] pictures of a 9 yr. old child and [give] their name?" another commenter wondered. "What the child did I'm not condoning, but still he's a very young child."

But the sheriff's office, for now, is not budging. In fact, it told WTSP-TV that the decision to post the child's mug shot is a policy the agency has upheld since 2018, and it won't remove the post.

“We have not had any repeat offenders since we have put this in place," Allison Merritt with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office added to the station.

In fact, just a week earlier, the sheriff's office posted a 10-year-old male's mug shot for the same charge and circumstance. Officials said this child brought a pocketknife to school and threatened another student.

WTSP said state law doesn't protect the confidentiality of juveniles charged with felonies, and their names, photos, and arrest reports legally can be released.

But the station added that the statute allows families to request that photos be taken down from websites — and if they're not removed within 10 days, the posters can face civil penalties.

"Just because we can post a mug shot of a 9-year-old doesn’t mean we should," attorney Shannon Schott, a legal expert in juvenile law, told WTSP.

Schott added to the station that posting a child’s mug shot online can have lasting consequences, including an impact on the child’s mental health, future schooling, and chances at rehabilitation.

“The juvenile justice system really is intended to keep things behind closed doors so a family can privately heal and move forward and help their child move forward," she told WTSP. "It’s really just a conflict between the way the sheriff thinks that things should be done and how the system actually works.”

Cop fatally shoots 6'5" 330-pound woman who slashed his face, kept advancing despite warnings to stop: Police

A Northern Virginia police officer fatally shot a 6'5" 330-pound woman who slashed his face while continually advancing toward the officer despite his repeated warnings for her to stop, police said.

The officer’s body-worn camera was activated during the encounter in the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive at the Reston Heights apartments Monday morning, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis told WDVM-TV.

The woman fell to the ground after the shooting, the station said, adding that medics took her to a hospital with critical injuries, and she died there.

Davis said at a news conference that the woman’s health care provider asked for a wellness check, the station said, adding that the uniformed officer identified himself and that the woman slammed her door in the officer’s face.

The chief added that the officer kept knocking on the door, offering to get help for the woman, and that the woman opened it minutes later while in possession of a knife, WDVM said.

Davis noted that the woman — who has had multiple encounters with police this year — began attacking the officer with the knife and cut his face at least once, the station reported.

Bodycam video shows the officer repositioning himself, backing away several feet, after which the woman moved toward the officer and cut him, the chief told WDVM.

David described the 33-year-old woman as standing six feet, five inches tall and weighing around 330 pounds, the station said.

The officer told the woman at least eight times to drop the knife and stop, WDVM said, adding that she kept moving toward the officer. Davis said during the news conference that the officer opened fire multiple times.

The woman fell to the ground after the shooting, the station said, adding that medics took her to a hospital with critical injuries, and she died there.

Davis said he expects the officer to recover from his injuries, WDVM noted, adding that the woman had family and friends and that the chief and his officers feel the loss of life.

The station said this was the second deadly shooting at this apartment complex in about a month.

“Seeing police here again is of course uncomfortable,” Marvin Somoza told WDVM. “You want to feel safe where you live, right, and so I think a lot of tenants right now might be feeling unsafe.”

The chief said he reviewed the entire bodycam video and that he will release it to the public well within 30 days, the station said.

Afghan migrant goes on stabbing spree and butchers cop at anti-jihad rally

Citizens' Movement, Pax Europa (BPE), is a German-based activist group that raises awareness about "the human rights violations caused by political Islam and about the existential threats that the increasing spread and influence of political Islam poses to free, democratic societies."

BPE was preparing for an anti-jihad demonstration in the southwestern German town of Mannheim on Friday. Before the rally could begin in the supposed knife-free zone, an Afghan migrant armed with a hunting knife affirmed the activists' worst fears.

Sulaiman Ataee, 25, left Afghanistan for Europe as a teen and has been living in Heppenheim, Hesse, with his wife and two children.

"He was inconspicuous, we greeted each other normally," one neighbor told Bild. "But recently, about the last year, I noticed that he had changed. Before, he was helpful, then he suddenly became colder. He was suddenly more withdrawn. And also more aggressive."

Ataee's guise of assimilation fully slipped Friday when he savagely attacked BPE activist and German politician Michael Stürzenberger, 54, along with four other demonstrators — ages 25, 36, and 42 — with a knife just before noon.

A German police officer, identified by German media as Rouven L., rushed to intervene, reflexively tackling one of the anti-jihad activists. According to German authorities, after intervening, Rouven was "attacked by the suspect and stabbed several times in the head from behind."

Graphic footage of the incident shows the bearded radical — whom Bild deemed a "fanatical Islamist" — sneak up on the officer who had tackled the BPE activist, then slit the officer's throat. Another cop responded just a moment too late, laying out the radical with a well-placed bullet.

All of the victims were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Rouven underwent emergency surgery and was placed in an artificial coma. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries Sunday afternoon. The GoFundMe campaign for Rouven's family has raised over $409,737, despite initially only asking for around $22,000.

BPE noted on Facebook that Stürzenberger survived a stab to the thigh, a stab to the leg right above the knee, an injury to the upper arm, and a "gaping open wound" in the side of his face, underscoring this was "what a single Afghan 'refugee' can do with a knife."

The Islamic terrorist alternatively survived his shooting by police. State police raided Ataee's apartment Saturday and confiscated computers and storage devices.

The Daily Mail reported that some neighbors indicated that the killer's wife disappeared before the raid and may have known what Ataee planned on doing.

'In major German cities we have a problem with certain young men with a migrant background who despise our state.'

Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann told SWR News, "All our thoughts are with the family, relatives and colleagues. The pain of such a cruel loss out of nowhere is hard to measure."

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser called for unity "against Islamist terror and for our free society."

Faeser also stated, "If the investigations reveal an Islamist motive, this would be a further confirmation of the great danger posed by Islamist acts of violence."

Blaze News previously reported that German and Dutch officials captured four Hamas terrorists in December believed to have been plotting an attack against "Jewish in Europe."

Following Germany's annual migrant riot, Faeser said in January 2023, "Good politics must clearly state what is happening: In major German cities we have a problem with certain young men with a migrant background who despise our state, commit acts of violence and are hardly reached by education and integration programs."

'His death shows what hatred and incitement can do.'

Mannheim Mayor Christian Specht said in a statement, "Political extremism has no place in our urban society."

While the BPE activists were attacked along with the officer, Specht appeared to implicate them in Rouven's demise, stating, "His death shows what hatred and incitement can do."

Despite his jab at the citizen victims, Specht reminded local radicals that "violence has no place in our city and must never play a role in political debate — no matter how opposing the positions may be."

Specht also implored everyone to unite once again behind the mantra of "diversity" and to "avoid any division."

"I am deeply saddened that the brave police officer succumbed to his serious injuries after the terrible attack in Mannheim," tweeted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Scholz said in a subsequent message, "The police officer killed in Mannheim defended the right of all of us to express our own opinions. If extremists want to restrict these rights by force, they must know that we are their toughest opponents. We will use all the means at our disposal under the rule of law."

Scholz and other German politicians were barraged with criticism online for having created the environment and set the policies that would permit radicals to pour into the country from abroad.

While establishmentarians were hounded for resuming their "diversity" mantra in the aftermath of another potentially avoidable terrorist attack, Islamic radicals celebrated the stabbings on social media.

SWR News indicated Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl had to condemn a popular video on TikTok wherein radicals called for the murder of "all ex-Muslims and every critic of Islam."

According to SWR News, one of the victims is a German-Kazakh citizen; another is an Iraqi citizen; and three others are Germans.

Homeowner fights knife-wielding, would-be burglar who escapes with stunt right out of 'Batman'

A homeowner in Tacoma, Washington, was awakened just before midnight earlier this month by a loud thud that sounded as though it was coming from his roof, KCPQ-TV reported.

So the homeowner went to check out what was happening and saw someone trying to break in from the fourth-floor balcony, the station said.

Then things got downright bizarre.

The homeowner confronted the intruder, and a fight broke out, KCPQ reported. The homeowner punched the suspect several times, and the suspect swiped at the homeowner with a knife, the station said, adding that the homeowner wasn't seriously hurt.

The suspect was apparently armed with two knives and possibly scissors, the station said.

Then things got downright bizarre — with a stunt right out of "Batman."

KCPQ said the suspect dropped from the fourth-floor balcony and landed on the third-floor balcony — and then jumped to the ground from there.

The suspect ran off, got in his vehicle, and drove away, KCPQ said.

The homeowner got in his vehicle and chased the suspect before losing sight of him, the station said, adding that the victim returned home and called 911.

The homeowner told responding law enforcement personnel that he didn't recognize the suspect, KCPQ reported.

More from the station:

When detectives later released a Crime Stoppers bulletin about the crime, a family member of the suspect identified him to police. The family member said that he had just gotten out of the hospital and didn't know where he was. The relative also told detectives that the suspect had bipolar disorder and that his mental health had been declining.

KCPQ said police arrested the suspect and took him into custody without incident Sunday, adding that the attempted burglary took place May 12.

The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Adam Groetsch, the station said, adding that he's being held in the Pierce County Jail on first-degree attempted burglary and second-degree assault charges with bail set at $75,000. Groetsch was still in jail Friday afternoon, jail records indicate.

Intruder armed with knife — who likely missed 'The Untouchables' — runs right into gun-toting homeowner

It's appears a Texas home intruder may not have watched the iconic movie "The Untouchables" — which includes a warning of sorts to avoid bringing a knife to a gunfight — because this guy did just that Monday night in Taylor. The city is about 45 minutes northeast of Austin.

The Taylor Press said officers responded to an 11:35 p.m. call about a male with a knife attempting to enter a house in the 2300 block of Donna Drive. As officers were headed to the residence, the paper said the male had entered the house — and that the homeowner shot the male.

Police found a large knife with a sheath featuring a 'Hail Satan' inscription the suspect was carrying.

The Press reported that when police arrived, the suspect had exited the home and was lying on the front porch with a gunshot wound to his hip.

Officers identified the suspect as 23-year-old Austin Sumpter of Thrall, the paper said.

Police found a large knife with a sheath featuring a “Hail Satan” inscription the suspect was carrying, the Press said, adding that the suspect was hospitalized; he's expected to survive.

The paper also reported that police obtained a warrant charging the suspect with burglary of a habitation with commission of felony, which will be served once the suspect is released from medical care.

How are observers reacting?

Commenters on the Press' story on Facebook seemed pleased with the outcome:

  • "I’m very thankful we live in a place where I can defend myself and property against people who feel they have any right to something that doesn’t belong to them!" one commenter wrote.
  • "Finally some good news for a change!" another commenter exclaimed.
  • "So glad the homeowners were armed & unharmed inside their home," another commenter said.
  • "He F’d around and found out," another commenter said, adding that "homeowners are tired of thieves! He got exactly what he deserves."

Thugs tackle DC woman, spray mace in her face, apparently hold knife to her side, steal her iPhone — yet she says 'I love DC'

Doorbell camera video caught the moment when three individuals chased and tackled a woman in northwest Washington, D.C., over the weekend, sprayed mace in her face, apparently held a knife to her side, and stole her iPhone and other belongings.

Yet the 26-year-old victim told WTTG-TV after the attack that "I love D.C." and that she has no plans to move out of the city.

What are the details?

The woman was walking on 2nd Street Northwest just before midnight Sunday when she saw a black sedan pull up, after which three people got out and began running toward her, Fox News reported, citing a police report the cable news network said it obtained.

Video captured the moment when the victim was running away from the trio on a sidewalk — but they easily caught up to her, shoved her so hard that she fell to the ground, and then they gathered around her as she screamed.

Here's part of the video; based on the accompanying audio, it appears that at least two of the attackers could be females:

WTTG, citing the police report, said the trio stole her wallet with her debit and credit cards, her ID, and her insurance card. The station added that they also demanded she unlock her iPhone, which they also stole.

"I'm definitely feeling shaken up," the woman told WTTG Monday. "Just general feelings of being unsafe, like, in my neighborhood. I just feel, like, personally targeted and sort of violated."

When the station asked her if she's considering moving out of the city over the trauma of her experience, the woman replied, "No, I love D.C. It just makes me sad that this is going to change how I experience D.C. and how I interact with my neighborhood and my space around me."

WTTG said detectives are searching for the suspects and asking anyone with information to contact them.

While the station said the victim was left "crawling back to her home" after the attack, the end of the complete video of the attack — shown in WTTG's video report below — appears to depict the victim rising to her feet and walking back down the sidewalk.

Police arrest thugs suspected of slashing and pummeling uniformed NYPD officer on NYC subway

Two thugs are in custody following a vicious attack on a New York City police officer Saturday night in the Bronx.

Marquise Webb of Yonkers and Haitian-native Brian Innocent, both 24, are being held at Riker's Island on $40,000 cash bail or $120,000 bond for allegedly slashing and pummeling 16-year NYPD veteran Lt. Gypsy Pichardo on a subway car. They have been charged with assault, resisting arrest, harassment, and obstructing governmental administration, reported WABC-TV.

Lt. Pichardo was called to Kingsbridge subway station around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday in response to a report from an MTA conductor about two groups of knife-wielding men fighting on a Bronx-bound train.

The New York Daily News indicated that one of the groups got off the train at 231st Street station, but the other group remained on until 238th Street Station, where they ran into Lt. Pichardo.

Upon his arrival, the NYPD lieutenant confronted Webb and Innocent, ordering them to disembark the halted train. Bronx prosecutors indicated both suspects refused to cooperate.

The criminal complaint claims the duo got back on the train, where they "refused several commands to place their hands behind their backs," reported the New York Post.

Footage of the incident provides a partial glimpse of a pair of thugs teaming up and cornering Lt. Pichardo, delivering kicks and haymakers. The video also reveals the attackers had a fan club as at least two men looked on without intervening on the officer's behalf.

After the bloody attack, officers can be seen chasing the suspects along the platform with Tasers at the ready. The attackers reportedly attempted to escape onto the train tracks but were captured by authorities after a brief chase.

Lt. Pichardo was taken to St. Barnabas in stable condition. He suffered significant bruising to one eye, which had swollen shut, and cuts on his face requiring eight stitches.

The NYPD indicated that a knife, a box cutter, and a straight razor were recovered by police following the arrests.

Webb and Innocent pleaded not guilty to all charges in Bronx Criminal Court Sunday night. According to WABC, detectives continue to look for the other members of the apparent gang who fled the scene.

This is not the first time in recent weeks criminal elements have tried to bleed police officers in the Bronx. A 40-year-old suspect reportedly charged two NYPD officers at Pelham Parkway station on Oct. 11, stabbing one officer in the arm and slashing the other.

Days earlier, NYPD Chief of Crime Control Strategies Michael LiPetri suggested that the increase in felony assaults this year has been driven in part by an increase in assaults on police officers.

Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York, said in a statement, "There is a simple reason that assaults on cops are going up. It's because anti-police activists — many of them on the public payroll — have normalized violent resistance against police officers. Charges against criminals who assault cops are frequently downgraded or thrown out, while hard-working cops are having their careers destroyed for using appropriate force to defend themselves or safely make an arrest. Police officers are literally getting beaten up in this environment. It's another reason that cops are still quitting in droves."

It's not just unsafe for armed police officers to travel around New York City. The NYPD indicated that felony assault increased 6.9% last month as compared to October 2022. Crime in the transit system also jumped 5.7%, and the total number of alleged bias incidents investigated by the NYPD Hate Crime Task Forces increased by 124% in October.

According to Neighborhood Scout, the chances of becoming the victim of a violent crime in the Bronx is 1 in 128.

Woman taken into custody after reportedly stabbing three including a 71-year-old at Atlanta airport

A crazed woman is in custody after allegedly stabbing three people Wednesday at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

According to the City of Atlanta Police Department, officers encountered 44-year-old Damaris Milton brandishing a knife outside the security checkpoint, walking to the South Terminal.

Footage of the incident shows the suspect screaming, pointing the knife threateningly, and taunting police.

@wsbtv @Collinpt21 Yes, and here is a better video of the lady with a knife, too!
— Mitch Jergensen (@Mitch Jergensen) 1697062959

APD Sgt. John Chafee told WSB-TV, "Officers encountered her, began to talk her into dropping the knife, limited her movement."

Rather than comply, the suspect stabbed a female airport clerk and the APD lieutenant who had attempted to take her into custody.

Police sources told WAGA-TV that the knife struck an artery in the 71-year-old lieutenant's leg and nicked the clerk.

After this initial bloodletting, another officer managed to tackle the suspect to the ground and disarm her. Later, police learned that the suspect had allegedly stabbed the driver of a taxi who had taken her to the airport.

Police indicated all three victims were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and are expected to recover.

The airport reportedly gave the all-clear roughly 40 minutes after the initial stabbing. No flights were reportedly canceled.

— (@)

Milton, apparently a resident of Orlando, Florida, was taken by Jonesboro Police Department officers to the Clayton County Jail. She has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that authorities are investigating what led to the stabbings, which appear to have been random.

"It doesn't appear that there's a connection between her and them, but that’s something we'll be looking into," said Sgt. Chafee.
