Marijuana can stunt or even kill babies in the womb: Study

A systematic review published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics concluded with moderate confidence on the basis of 51 studies with over 21.1 million participants that cannabis use during pregnancy can result in early births, low birth weights, and unusually small babies. The review also indicated significantly increased odds of miscarriages.

The study's authors, all but one of whom are based out of the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, noted at the outset that the self-reported use of medical and nonmedical marijuana among pregnant women in the U.S. has more than doubled over the past two decades and continues to increase, despite warnings from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology.

According to the ACOG's Committee on Obstetric Practice, "self-reported prevalence of marijuana use during pregnancy ranges from 2% to 5% in most studies but increases to 15–28% among young, urban, socioeconomically disadvantaged women."

The OHSU researchers behind the new study noted further that marijuana is now reportedly the most commonly used federally illicit drug in pregnancy.

"This is cause for concern," wrote the researchers, because the main psychoactive component of cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol, can cross the placenta and bind to endocannabinoid receptors on preborn babies' major organs.

The existing scientific literature already associates maternal marijuana use with numerous dire consequences, including stillbirth and fetal growth restriction as well as impaired cognition, decreased attention span, behavioral problems, and compromised visual-motor coordination in prenatally exposed children.

The researchers noted, however, that "clinicians are not consistently counseling patients regarding prenatal cannabis use, partly because of the limited and mixed available evidence."

'Ideally, it's best not to be exposed to THC.'

"Patients are coming to me in their prenatal visits saying, 'I quit smoking and drinking, but is it safe to still use cannabis?'" said lead author Jamie Lo, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the OHSU School of Medicine. "Until direct harms have been proven, they perceive it to be safe to use."

"As the prevalence of prenatal cannabis use is rising, there is an urgent need for evidence-driven recommendations on the safety of use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding," Lo said in March.

Keen to furnish clinicians with a better understanding of the associated risks so that they can confidently counsel mothers regarding prenatal cannabis use, the researchers analyzed 51 observational studies including eight new studies, and raised the certainty of evidence for various potential adverse effects.

The researchers found that prenatal cannabis was linked to a 52% higher risk of premature birth and a 75% higher risk of low birth weight. They also found a 29% higher risk of infant death associated with the use of cannabis during pregnancy.

OHSU researchers revealed in another study recently published in the American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology that a mother's use of cannabis while pregnant could adversely impact her baby's lung development and function, potentially resulting in asthma and other chronic respiratory health conditions.

In addition to jeopardizing the health of babies, marijuana has also been linked to various medical problems in adults, including cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cannabis use can lead to increased risk of stroke, heart disease, and other vascular diseases; can harm lung tissues and cause scarring and damage to small blood vessels; and has been linked to depression, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses.

Lo told CNN, "Ideally, it's best not to be exposed to THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient of cannabis, no matter what form you're using."

Chicago couple attacked so brutally wife suffers miscarriage; teen suspects charged only with misdemeanor

A pair of Chicago teens were assessed just one misdemeanor charge each after they and others allegedly attacked a couple so brutally that their female victim suffered a miscarriage.

On Friday evening, a 41-year-old woman identified only as Nina was walking home with her husband after going out on a date. Nina had taken advantage of the opportunity to look nice for her husband, donning a dress and heels for the occasion.

'We believe in faith, and it wasn't meant to be. So, we don't know why this happened to us.'

At about 8:30 p.m., the couple reached the intersection of Grand Avenue and McClurg Court in the Streeterville neighborhood when suddenly a group of teens allegedly jumped them from behind. "Everything happened from behind us. First, someone approached him and punched him in the head," Nina said of her husband.

Her husband implored Nina to run, but the assailants prevented her escape. One girl allegedly dragged Nina to the ground and pulled on her hair with such force that she tore chunks of hair out of Nina's scalp.

"I start screaming, she started pepper-spraying me right in the face, in the eyes," Nina claimed.

Nina also sustained repeated punches and kicks to her stomach. When her husband attempted to protect her, the gang descended upon him, and Nina estimated to FOX 32 that "over 10 people" held him down.

The suspects ran away after police arrived on the scene. However, officers managed to nab two teens — a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl — believed to have been involved in the assault. Both have been assessed just one count of misdemeanor battery and are no longer in police custody.

Alderman Brian Hopkins has since contacted the state's attorney's office, hoping that the charges will be upgraded to a felony. "Both victims suffered extensive injuries," he noted to FOX 32.

Indeed, they did. In fact, there was apparently a third victim in the attack as Nina was a couple of weeks' pregnant at the time. She later learned she had lost the baby.

"We believe in faith, and it wasn't meant to be. So, we don't know why this happened to us," she said.

Nina and her husband are still trying to make sense of the attack against them since there seemed to be no motive for it. "They didn't steal anything. They say like, 'We own the street. We own the street. You can't walk around,'" she recalled.

"They dragged my dress on the ground, and they said, like, 'We own the street. You can’t just walk around prancing in your little dress.' And they were saying things that just didn't make any sense to me because they don't know me personally."

Police told FOX 32 that the incident remains under investigation. The outlet asked the state's attorney's office whether other charges might be forthcoming but did not receive a response.

'My husband and I are heartbroken': Actress and singer says that she 'performed on stage for 2000 people while having a miscarriage'

Actress and singer Laura Benanti, a Tony Award winner, revealed that she recently performed while experiencing a miscarriage.

Benanti noted that she was aware of the miscarriage prior to the performance.

"On Monday April 3rd, I performed on stage for 2000 people while having a miscarriage. I knew it was happening. It started slowly the night before. If it had been our first loss, or even our second, I likely wouldn’t have been able to go on. But unfortunately, I am not a stranger to the pain and emptiness of losing a pregnancy. It is a path I have walked before, hand in hand with my husband," she wrote in an Instagram post.

"But this time we walked it alongside some of the kindest, most loving humans I will ever have the honor to share space with. Thank you to everyone in that audience for the grace your presence allowed. For lifting me out of my grief for that Holy hour. Thank you to my band for holding me, unconditionally, in your hearts, and to the crew for working so hard to make me as comfortable as possible. Thank you to my friends and fellow performers for rallying around me and so graciously accommodating my changing needs," Benanti wrote.

"My husband and I are heartbroken but we will move through this together as we, and so many others, have done before. I share all of this, not to garner sympathy or attention, but to remind the many people and families who have and will suffer in this way that there is no shame in this kind of loss. That you are not alone. And to remind myself as well," Benanti said.

The woman and her husband, Patrick Brown, have two children, including one who was born through a surrogate last year.

"Patrick and I are so grateful for the family that we have, and the miracle of our two little girls. One carried by me and one carried by an angel-on-earth," Benati wrote.

Stop Calling My Miscarriage An Abortion

I had a miscarriage, not an abortion, and here’s why I’m angry about those who aren’t making that distinction.

'My baby's heart had stopped beating': Jessa Seewald, who had a D&C after a miscarriage, issues statement after leftists suggest she had an abortion

Jessa Seewald, who is one of the more than a dozen children of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, has publicly disclosed that she suffered a miscarriage and underwent a dilation and curettage procedure.

But after revealing the devastating loss, the grieving mother has issued what appears to be a response to those who seized upon the tragic news to suggest that she had undergone an abortion.

"There's a world of difference between someone dying and someone being killed. To equate one to the other— and to a mother grieving the loss of her baby no less— is severely distasteful. There is a world of difference between a mortician and a murderer. Even a child understands the difference between the two," Seewald noted in a post on her Instagram story.

"Women have D&C's for many reasons, not all of which involve killing a living human being. The ultrasound revealed I had a missed miscarriage. My baby's heart had stopped beating 3 weeks before I had a D&C. (Btw, this was not my first D&C— it was my second. My first was 2 weeks postpartum Ivy's birth for retained placenta.)" she wrote. "Each person is created 'in the image of God' (Gen 1:27), and to purposefully destroy a baby in the womb is an affront to the God who created that life."

Seewald had posted a video discussing the tragic loss of her unborn baby, and noted that she underwent a D&C, but some leftists pounced on the news to suggest that the pro-life Christian woman got an abortion.

A Jezebel headline reads, "Jessa Duggar Seewald Had an Abortion, Even If She Won't Say the Word," while a Parade headline declares, "Jessa Duggar Reveals She Had a Life-Saving Abortion in Emotional New Video."

Jessa and her husband Ben Seewald have four other children together.
