California police say man won't face charges after shooting and killing home intruder who was an ex-boyfriend of his girlfriend

A California man will not face charges after shooting and killing his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend who had broken into their apartment, according to police.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said officers responded to a call about a shooting at about 2 in the morning early on Sunday at the Sutter Crossing Apartments complex in Carmichael, a city in Sacramento County.

'He's entitled to defend himself and kill that intruder.'

Police said that they found a man who had been shot dead, and he was identified as an ex-boyfriend of a woman who lived in the apartment. The ex allegedly banged on the door for 20 minutes before the woman opened the door and he forced his way in.

The man then got into a fight with the woman's current boyfriend before he shot the home intruder, according to the sheriff's office.

The current boyfriend told police that he was choked by the ex before he retrieved his gun from beneath his pillow and shot at the man once. He was declared dead at the scene.

The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office determined that the shooter should not face charges after receiving the investigative report from police.

The sheriff's office said that the current boyfriend called the police and that they were cooperating with the investigation. Officials added that the gun was licensed and registered to the shooter.

A local attorney named Michael Wise told KOVR-TV that California has "stand your ground" protections in the law.

"If this gentleman was presented with a lethal threat that he did not trigger in any way, then he's entitled to defend himself and kill that intruder," Wise explained.

"Ironically you can still be charged for illegal possession of a firearm if you're not allowed to possess one," he added, "but the actual use of deadly force to defend yourself is still justified even if you use a weapon that is not registered in California or if you're not allowed to possess one."

KOVR reported that many in the neighborhood were stunned to find that the shooter was not charged, and they said they knew the victim well. None of those involved were publicly identified, but the victim's name will be released after the medical examiner contacts his next of kin.

Carmichael is a city of about 80k residents located 10 miles northeast of Sacramento.

Georgia police say man shot and killed armed thug trying to rob him in parking garage: 'I just had to shoot somebody'

A Georgia man told police that he thwarted an attempted armed robbery after pulling his own gun and shooting the thug who allegedly threatened him.

Hapeville police released a panicked 911 call from the victim after the shooting at the Atlantic Aerotropolis on S. Fulton Ave. on April 15 at about 9:30 a.m.

“Hey, I just had to shoot somebody in the top floor of the parking deck,” said the man on the emergency call obtained by WSB-TV.

The man said he was walking from the apartments to his car when he was confronted by the armed man.

“His car was parked next to mine. He got out of the car, said, ‘Hey bro! Don’t move!’ [and] pointed a gun at me. I pulled my gun, and I shot,” he added.

After he shot him, he noticed there was another man in the passenger seat of the suspect's car. The victim ran into his apartment and called police to tell them about the incident.

While he was worried that the second man might follow him into the apartment, police say the second suspect ran away from the scene.

Witnesses said they saw the man run toward a nearby church. Police later identified the suspect as Alton Coleman and arrested him after seeing him allegedly urinating in public at the church.

Coleman was charged with murder and aggravated assault, and records show he has a lengthy criminal history. The man who was shot and killed was identified as 39-year-old Lando Carter.

WSB was also able to confirm that Carter had been released from prison only a year prior to the robbery and his death. He had served a 15-year sentence for interference with commerce by threats or violence and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.

The victim did not want to speak to WSB about the incident.

Hapeville is a city of about 6,500 people located in the northwest part of the state.

Woman allegedly ambushed by home intruders shoots one in the head, killing him, and injures another in Philadelphia

Pennsylvania police said that a woman was able to shoot and kill one home intruder and send another to a hospital after being ambushed at her Philadelphia apartment.

The woman arrived at her apartment on the first floor of a row home on Chestnut with her boyfriend at about 2 a.m. on March 29 when three armed men grabbed her, according to police.

The woman shot two of the men during a brief scuffle where 13 shots were fired.

One of the alleged intruders, a 32-year-old, was found in a bedroom with a gunshot to the head and numerous shots to the chest, and he was declared dead at the scene. A second man fled through a back door and sought treatment for gunshot injuries to his shoulder at Mercy Hospital.

The intended victims said the alleged home intruders were disguised as police officers before the altercation and at least one of the three had what was described to be a badge on a chain around his neck.

The 31-year-old man who went to the hospital was arrested, but police had no further information on the third alleged intruder, who escaped.

A neighbor named Aaron Allen told KYW-TV that the woman had moved into the home with her family about a year prior to the incident.

"She don't bother nobody," said Allen.

"People so mean. You don't know what people might do," he added. "Carrying guns and she probably was trying to defend herself and I don't blame her."

Another neighbor named Tressy Wilson said she had been assaulted in the same area and the recent shooting makes her want to move away even more.

"That's shocking. It makes no sense," she said.

"I stay to myself. I'm scared to go to work. I'm scared to go home," Wilson added. "Now you scared to be in your own house."

KYW reported that the woman was cooperating with police and it was unclear whether she would face charges over the shooting. Police are investigating whether the woman knew the three men who allegedly attacked her. An initial report claimed the woman told police she didn't know any of the men and didn't know why they were in her apartment.

Elderly man shoots and kills nearly naked home intruder who assaulted him and his wife, PA police say

An elderly man and his wife were violently attacked by a home intruder but he was able to shoot and kill the suspect, who was nearly naked at the time.

Pennsylvania State Police said that 54-year-old Steven David Schaffer had tried to get into another home in Berwick Township and other people's cars before he assaulted the couple who are in their seventies.

They said that Schaffer was nude during the attack except for a t-shirt.

During the attack the husband told his wife to get their gun from their bedroom. Police said that Schaffer followed the woman and "violently attacked" her while she tried to retrieve the gun. The husband was able to get the gun and shoot Schaffer several times, killing him.

The woman who was attacked was airlifted to a hospital where she is listed in critical condition.

Police said that Schaffer lived down the street from the elderly couple, but that they were not acquainted.

"Obviously this is a very sad situation," said Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Mark Magyar. "We all have an expectation to safety and privacy in our homes and not to have somebody come in and intrude the way that Mr. Schaefer did.

Other residents of the neighborhood were disturbed by the incident.

"It’s close to home and you’re out with your kids doing things or even home with your kids," said Amanda Collins to WPMT-TV. "Not everyone locks their doors when they’re home. You’re supposed to be safe in your house."

"I actually live down the road like two, three minutes down the road. I was at work and I was just like, here we go again," said Brooke Forbes.

"The world isn’t getting any better," she added.
