Pro-police attorney has law license suspended after accusing BLM protestors of being in gang she and cops likely made up

A former prosecutor with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office in Arizona has had her law license suspended after a panel with the state bar determined that she showed "a disturbing pattern of excessive charging" in the cases of some protestors, at least one of whom was an "innocent man."

On Tuesday, the State Bar of Arizona issued the decision to suspend the license of April Sponsel for two years after a thorough investigation into some of Sponsel's work in 2020 uncovered seemingly zealous attempts to overcharge defendants deemed to be anti-police.

Most of the accusations against Sponsel related to a BLM protest that occurred in Phoenix on October 17, 2020. Like many BLM protests that year, people showed up in black, attempted to conceal their identities with umbrellas, and tried to disrupt traffic. They also chanted well-known phrases such as "black lives matter," "no justice, no peace," and "no KKK, no fascist USA."

Among this group, 15 people were arrested, including Ryder Collins, a nurse from out of town who happened upon the group by chance while taking photographs in the area. The decision signed by presiding Judge Margaret Downie repeatedly referred to Collins as "innocent," citing both statements from witnesses and body-cam evidence.

Even with the exculpatory evidence, Sponsel tried to strong-arm Collins, a political conservative who considers himself "very pro-police," into copping to rioting and assisting a criminal street gang, both felonies. "Ms. Sponsel may not have intended to indict an innocent man. But the evidence establishes that she did so," Downie wrote.

When challenged with overwhelming evidence that had erroneously charged Collins, Sponsel still refused to admit wrongdoing — and offered a ludicrous defense for her actions. "People can be out there taking pictures of the sunset and then go home and murder their spouse," she said at a disciplinary hearing two months ago. "Does that necessarily mean that they’re innocent of murdering their spouse because they said they were taking pictures of the sunset earlier in the day? No."

What's more, Sponsel decided to charge all 15 defendants arrested in connection with the protest, including Collins, with belonging to a gang called ACAB — a gang Sponsel and several members of area law enforcement seem to have made up.

The defendants did chant the phrase "all cops are bastards," or ACAB for short, but there is no indication that they referred to themselves as members of a group called ACAB or that they had participated in gang activity. There's even little evidence that they knew one another prior to the protest.

Ryan Green, a prosecutor with experience handling gang cases, noted many holes in Sponsel's prosecutorial approach and brought them to her attention within weeks of the protest.

"During their 'march' in October, did any of them have signs? Shout slogans? What are the devices thrown at police? Smoke bombs vs. explosives? Any of them have prior felony convictions? If so, what for? What are the tattoos that they have gotten? Do we have photos of their tattoos?" Green asked among other questions.

A few months later, Green asked more questions, expressing concern that felony gang charges may have been inappropriate in this case. The following are a handful of questions Green posed to Sponsel:

  • "Is there a witness who can identify at least 2 or more of these specific defendants having previously associated with one another prior to October 17th? If so, which defendants?"
  • "What is the evidence and which witnesses can testify that the charged defendants previously planned events with their fellow co-defendants?"
  • "Do we have any captured electronic communications between these specific arrestees prior to October 17th?"
An outside investigation later found "no credible evidence to support the assertion that ACAB is a criminal street gang," the decision said.

Despite the fact that there was little evidence to support the existence of an ACAB gang, Sponsel moved forward with the gang charges, lumping the defendants together as a gang for the sake of "efficiency," the bar's decision indicated. She even suggested to a grand jury that this so-called ACAB gang was akin to notorious gangs like the Bloods, Crips, and Hells Angels.

Sponsel, who is married to an officer with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, was described in the bar's decision as "very pro-law enforcement," and County Attorney Rachel Mitchell indicated that Sponsel's "ardent" support for police may have clouded her judgment in this case.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office ultimately decided to drop all the charges against the 15 defendants in connection with the protest and placed Sponsel on administrative leave in March 2021. She was officially terminated by MCAO in June 2022 after refusing multiple settlement offers.

While Sponsel's law license will be suspended for two years effective next February, she will not necessarily get it back once the two years have expired. She will have to reapply and "prove she's been rehabilitated," ABC 15 Arizona reported.

It is unclear whether Sponsel intends to appeal the bar's decision. Her attorney told ABC15 Arizona, "The process is ongoing so it’s premature to comment."

Democratic NY state Senate candidate held anti-cop sign at BLM protest, claims he wasn't aware it read 'ACAB' — an acronym for 'All Cops Are Bastards'

A Democratic New York state Senate candidate held an anti-cop sign at a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020, and Christian Amato now claims he wasn't aware the sign read "ACAB" — an acronym for "All Cops Are Bastards," the New York Post reported.

What are the details?

Amato — a Bronx strategist and community organizer — held the sign during the BLM demonstration at the Loreto Playground in Morris Park, the paper said, citing a recently surfaced photo. The BLM protest was a counter-demonstration against a "Back the Blue" rally, the Post added.

— James B. Gisondi, Esq. (@James B. Gisondi, Esq.) 1649431460

Calling Amato a "weasel beyond belief,” Bronx resident Wayne Gurman — who took the photo of Amato at the protest — told the paper "it’s laughable that Amato is running for [state] Senate …"

Gurman — who runs the Facebook group BRONX STRONG — added to the Post that BLM protesters blasted infamous '80s rap song “F*** tha Police” during the hastily organized counter-demonstration.

A demonstrator standing next to Amato carried a sign that read “Blue Lives Don’t Matter," the paper said.

James Gisondi — a lawyer running in the Democratic primary for NY Senate District 36, the Post said — earlier this month tweeted the photo of Amato carrying the sign. On Sunday he tweeted a challenge to "all candidates for NY [state] senate 36th to join with me in demanding ... Christian Amato resign from community planning [board] #11 or be removed by the board or [borough] president."

What did Amato have to say?

Amato admitted to the paper that he held the “ACAB” sign but claimed he wasn't aware of what was on the sign when it was handed to him.

“Someone passed me the sign, and I didn’t know it said, ‘ACAB.’ I had no clue,” he noted to the Post. “I totally grabbed the sign in haste.”

Amato added to the paper that he joined the counter-protest because he believed it was "tone-deaf" to hold a pro-cop rally just days after George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis — a turn of events that ignited a summer of rioting, violence, and property destruction around the country.

“The officers deserve our respect. But we need our officers to be culturally cognitive,” Amato also told the Post. “When there is social unrest, it is not the best moment to hold an event. You have to read the room.”

Amato also told the paper that the "Back the Blue" demonstrators were unruly and angrily confronted and taunted the smaller number of Black Lives Matter protesters.

Here's a campaign video from Amato:

The Post said the controversy over the “ACAB” sign follows the paper's recent report about a candidate for Democratic district leader in Brooklyn — rapper Noah Weston — who posted hateful messages on Twitter about police.

Public university caught promoting piece explaining 'Why All Cops Are Bastards' and 'Good Cops Do Not Exist' on its 'allyship' reading list

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls' diversity office recently hosted an allyship event in which they promoted an article titled, "A Guide to Allyship: Black Lives Matter & Why 'All Cops Are Bastards,'" Campus Reform reported.

The article, according to the Campus Reform's Jackson Walker and Adam Sabes, has since been removed from the office's "Education & Resources for Allies" webpage, and the university's director of communications and marketing states that the school regrets the posting of the document.

What are the details?

According to the outlet, the recommended reading explains that the idea that individual cops can be good is "rooted in white supremacist mythology."

"The claim that individual cops can be good is rooted in white supremacist mythology that suggests racism is an individual act committed by anybody," the article noted. "Policing is not a question of individualism. It is not as if a random individual gets a gun, a badge, a police car, and a blue uniform. The police are a highly organized institution with systemic power. In order to understand any institution, it is important you start with the history of that institution, the institution of modern day policing evolved from the slave patrol system."

The reading also noted that "to suggest that there are good cops is like saying there's good slave patrols or good colonizers," and pointed out that even if — by chance — an officer with a good intention exits, it doesn't change the fact that "the system they work for criminalizes the whole black community."

According to the article, police "protect Nazis and white supremacists," are guilty of causing gender violence, and states that police are useless in protecting schoolchildren when serving in a SRO capacity.

"[W]e must abolish the police," the article concluded.

What else?

The article was yanked after Wisconsin Right Now reported the article on June 22, Walker and Sabes noted.

Dina Fassino, the school's director at the communications and marketing office, told the outlet that the university is regretful in sharing the document, and "have taken steps to develop a process for reviewing such content in the future."

Beth Schommer, the chief of staff at the UW-River Falls' Chancellor's Office, said that the link to the article was unintentionally posted to the portal.

"We are terribly under resourced in terms of our ability to oversee all the different webpages we have," Schommer said.

Wisconsin Right Now shared a statement from the school:

UW-River Falls regrets the posting of a link on one of its webpages to an editable document from a third-party source which, after being posted, was edited at the source to include statements against law enforcement. The opinions and views reflected in the document do not reflect the values of the university. UWRF is appreciative of the work of law enforcement and is committed to promoting an inclusive campus environment. The webpage has been removed and the university has taken steps to develop a process for reviewing such content in the future.

One of the articles, which was linked on the university's website (which is funded by your tax dollars, in part), bears the headline, “good cops do not exist," and says, “The claim that individual cops can be good is rooted in white supremacist mythology that suggests racism is an individual act committed by anybody. Policing is not a question of individualism…the institution of modern day policing evolved from the slave patrol system. To suggest that there are good cops is like saying there's good slave patrols or good colonizers. It acts as if policing is an individual act that isn't a product of racial capitalism."

The article states that policing “is a violent, sexist, anti-Black institution." Another article on the site suggests that Asians not call cops to show allyship to blacks. Other articles called for defunding and abolishing the police. An article, “Why Riots Work," declared, “violent demonstrations can and have spurred change" and noted, “to turn the tide against injustice, we need movements that are relentless, escalating and with a broadening base of participation."

Fiery protests erupt in Minneapolis for third night after man was killed in police shooting: 'Time for the police to get killed'

For the third straight night, protests erupted in Minneapolis as demonstrators reacted to the shooting death of a man by law enforcement that happened on Thursday afternoon.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force attempted to arrest Winston Boogie Smith, who was wanted on a state arrest warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm. When law enforcement tried to take Smith into custody on the top level of a parking ramp in the Uptown neighborhood, he allegedly "produced a handgun" and fired shots from inside his vehicle at the officers, according to officials. U.S. Marshals returned fire and struck Smith, 32, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A 27-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment of glass injuries sustained during the shooting and released.

"Evidence at the scene indicates that the man fired his weapon from inside the vehicle. BCA crime scene personnel recovered a handgun as well as spent cartridge cases from inside the driver's compartment," the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a statement.

There is no footage of the fatal shooting because the U.S Marshal Service does not allow the use of body cameras for officers serving on its North Star Fugitive Task Force.

Smith was wanted in neighboring Ramsey County for failing to appear for a sentencing hearing scheduled for May 19 after he pleaded guilty to felony firearm possession, court records show.

Smith was convicted of felony aggravated robbery in 2017 and was on probation, which meant he was prohibited from possessing a firearm. "If he had been nabbed with a firearm by cops Thursday, he could have sent back to prison," according to the New York Post.

Following George Floyd's death, Smith allegedly made life-threatening posts towards police and called for a "war" against law enforcement.

"We got guns and bullet proof vest too or should be able to get em… why not just rush these f***s and start this war they keep asking for!" Smith reportedly wrote on Facebook.

"F*** justice anyway b**** justice is an eye for eye u kill one of mine we need one of yours that's justice! Right or wrong f*** being right cuz they keep doing us wrong," he allegedly posted on social media. "I'm down with the burn everything government not touch s*** else I don't even need to loot I'll buy my s*** just kill them dirty ass cops off we tired of being scared at the red light!"

Protesters took to the streets on Thursday night to demand "justice" in the shooting death of Winston Boogie Smith. Protesters barricaded streets and set fires. The demonstrations escalated at times on Thursday night with storefront glass being destroyed, and there was looting at a T-Mobile store and CVS pharmacy.

Third night of protests in Minneapolis' Uptown following shooting by deputies www.youtube.com

'All Cops Are Bast**ds' acronym at North Carolina RV park results in big-time backlash, alleged death threats

Those of you familiar with leftist militant-speak and shenanigans know the acronym "ACAB" stands for the phrase, "All Cops Are Bastards."

And of course we've all been used to seeing those letters plastered on protesters' signs and spray-painted on federal buildings, particularly since nationwide rioting began nearly a year ago with the police-involved death of George Floyd.

But this time the "ACAB" acronym ended up on a roadside sign for a motel and RV park, which may not seem terribly unusual — except for the fact that the sign isn't a beacon in a woke metropolis like Portland or Seattle.

No, this time the "All Cops Are Bastards" sentiment was on full display on a sign in Maggie Valley, North Carolina — a town boasting fewer than 1,800 residents and nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains.

As you can imagine, there was just a little bit of backlash.

Here's what Our Place Inn posted Saturday on Facebook:

"EXCELLENT!!! ACAB got everyone's attention just like we knew it would," the message read, accompanied by an image of the sign with a scenic backdrop. "Posts are spreading like wild fire and a discussion has started. So now let's talk about police reform."

The post then delved into the beliefs of Our Place Inn regarding police reform and what the RV park wants to see happen, including better training, education, and resources for officers, along with better transparency, more mental health professionals, social workers, and other specialists to help cops, and a "national database of misconduct."

Our Place Inn then asks readers to "share with us your thoughts on police reform!"

Oh boy, did they ever. The post attracted more than 7,000 comments — three times the number of residents of the town. Here are few of them:

  • "I hope the next thing we see on that sign is 'UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT' or 'SORRY BUT WE ARE CLOSED BECAUSE OF SOME DUMBASS WE HIRED....FOR SALE,'" one commenter wrote.
  • "I hope this goes viral... not in a way that furthers your message, but in a way that closes your doors," another commenter said.
  • "Disgusting and ignorant," another commenter opined. "Your sign below says, 'be kind to all' yet the acronym on the sign above is calling "all" cops bastards. The duplicity shows ignorance and simple-mindedness. NOT the virtue of kindness you are pretending to stand for. MY cop is NOT a bastard. #backtheblue"
  • "Thanks for narrowing down where I will stay when going to Maggie Valley," another commenter declared. "BTW call Al Sharpton the next time you are in an emergency."

More repercussions

Amid the furor, the RV park posted a follow-up message Sunday saying a group called "Feeding the Multitudes" cut ties with Our Place Inn after the donors for Feeding the Multitudes — "prioritizing their hurt feelings over feeding their neighbors in need" — pulled their donations.

"In the past, we have worked together with [Feeding the Multitudes] on multiple projects, volunteered to help pass out food for/with them, helped clear their warehouse when it was infested with mice by taking multiple trips of supplies to the dump, and we even provided them with their new magnet logos that are currently on their trucks," according to Our Place Inn, which added phones are not being answered "due to death threats over ACAB."

Feeding the Multitudes on Sunday offered its own version of things on Facebook:

Our purpose is to be a light to anyone without questions, judgment, or prejudice. No one should have to choose between food or their beliefs. We only partner and work with Haywood Outdoor Pantries. We are NOT a partner of Our Place Inn, and their views are not ours. We are proud supporters of our Law Enforcement Officers and Firemen and First Responders. We just happen to have been at an event that they were at as well as two other vendors. We will continue our journey but have from this point on severed ties with the Inn but not with Haywood Outdoor Pantries because like us they have been caught in the crossfire. We look forward to continuing our journey. At the end of the day it's all about getting food into the hands of those that need it.

For Portland Black Lives Matter Rioters, Biden Isn’t Enough. They Want ‘Death To America’

Despite the left's high hopes that unity could be achieved once the bad orange man left office, it is clear that, as many conservatives tried to warn earlier in the year, the mob is insatiable.

VIDEO: Black Lives Matter militants march by outdoor diners — who make absolutely sure their fists are raised in solidarity

As Black Lives Matter militants intimidate and bully more and more people, certain messages seem to be getting across — one of them being, "We own you. We'll do what we want to you. Do as we say, and maybe we'll leave you alone — but don't dare stand up for yourself, or you'll be sorry."

What's the background?

Who can forget the outrageous scenes in late August when leftist militants were caught on video harassing Washington, D.C., restaurant patrons because they refused to raise their fists in Black Lives Matter solidarity like other patrons seated around them?

It got worse in St. Petersburg, Florida, in late September when protesters harassed and threatened two elderly diners. One of the diners, a woman, made the mistake of battling back when a protester sat in a seat at their table — which resulted in the couple being surrounded. One protester was heard asking the other diner, a man, "Why don't you shut up? Who the f*** you think you're talking to?" The activist who stole the seat told the woman, "I'll knock your old-ass boyfriend the f*** out!" and accused her of being a "wild Karen in her natural f***ing habitat!"

Also in September, Black Lives Matter protesters descended upon outdoor diners in Rochester, New York, forcing patrons to leave while smashing up tables and throwing chairs. Amid the terrifying scene, incredibly one of the BLM assailants yelled at retreating patrons, "There's no need to run! Nobody's hurting y'all! We're shutting the party down! Nobody's gonna touch you! Learning their lessons?

Which brings us to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the scene of yet another Black Lives Matter march on Sunday evening. Multiple media outlets had declared former Vice President Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 election against President Donald Trump the day before, but unrest was still in the air apparently.

Video journalist Brendan Gutenschwager recorded a clip of the BLM militants marching down a street — and four diners watching from the sidewalk and obediently raising their fists, apparently without having to be ordered to do so:

Diners put their fists up for Black Lives Matter as a large group of protesters marches by #AnnArborProtests… https://t.co/izxExzrWiX
— Brendan Gutenschwager (@Brendan Gutenschwager)1604880550.0

Well, one of diners lifted his palm skyward — but apparently that was good enough for the protesters.

In fairness, another video showed a number of diners who didn't raise their fists and weren't harassed for not doing so; and perhaps the diners who raised their fists actually agreed with the cause of Black Lives Matter and were only too happy to show their solidarity.

But still the Pavlovian response from the four diners indeed demonstrates how quickly bad news travels — and how speedily some learn the Ps and Qs of finding yourself in the middle of a left-wing protest.

'At some point, they're gonna sit at the wrong table': Black civil rights official predicts 'violence' against protesters who harass diners

A black civil rights official predicted to "Fox & Friends" Friday that "violence" awaits "intimidators" who've been harassing restaurant diners as part of protests against alleged racial injustice and police brutality.

What are the details?

Peter Kirsanow, a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, told the network that protesters who have been harassing easily picked-on diners — many of them elderly — will soon overplay their hand: "It's not gonna end well at some point. At some point, they're gonna sit at the wrong table, and it's gonna have some violence."

Reacting to video of two elderly diners harassed and threatened by protesters in St. Petersburg, Florida, hours after a grand jury on Wednesday decided to not charge police in connection to Breonna Taylor's shooting death, Kirsanow took the bullying leftists to task.

"This type of behavior obviously is unjustified, but it's rationalized by these protesters — and they're not even protesters: They're intimidators, disruptors of the peace, in some cases they engage in overt violence, but it's rationalized by them because of this false narrative of systemic racism and that cops are disproportionately shooting blacks," he told "Fox & Friends."

What happened to the elderly diners?

Video of the St. Petersburg incident shows a mob of protesters repeatedly chanting, "Stand up, fight back!" while facing diners at a restaurant before one apparent activist pulls up a seat at a table occupied by an older man and woman.

The woman at the table quickly stands up and says, "Nope, this is my table" and unsuccessfully attempts to tip the protester out of the chair before he slams it back down — and then two more activists fill the remaining empty seats while flashing signs and joining the chant. Additional activists followed and stood to surround the couple.

One activist can be heard telling the man, "Why don't you shut up? Who the f*** you think you're talking to?" before the first activist who stole a seat told the woman, "I'll knock your old-ass boyfriend the f*** out!" and accused her of being a "wild Karen in her natural f***ing habitat!"

"Fox & Friends" said the video quickly went viral and received more than 1.8 million views on Twitter in under 12 hours.

Not the first time

The St. Pete bullied diners weren't the first victims of this type of left-wing intimidation.

A group of leftist militants were caught on video harassing Washington, D.C., restaurant patrons late last month, apparently because they refused to raise their fists in Black Lives Matter solidarity like other patrons seated around them.

Anything else?

Kirsanow also noted in his "Fox & Friends" interview that there's no data showing that black people are disproportionately targeted in police shootings and that media members have handled police shootings of unarmed black people "irresponsibly."

And as for the charge that "systemic racism" is infecting our country, he said that "the evidence, the data, for decades now, has been irrefutable that that is not the case."

"There's a huge cohort of individuals that leap on the initially reported facts and perpetuate them because many of the facts related to George Floyd, for example, Breonna Taylor, began to come out, but the media wasn't reporting them, and this type of hysteria develops because of a false narrative, and it needs to be corrected because something is going to happen soon," Kirsanow added. "We've already seen billions of dollars' worth of property damage, in large part because of the belief in this false narrative."

White silence is violence!" Later they chant, "No justice, no peace!"

Fists are raised skyward all around her; but she does not comply.

In the second clip, leftists harass a couple seated outside another restaurant, presumably for the same reason: The man and woman won't raise their fists like their fellow patrons seated around them.

But as we can see from the next clip, it's much less problematic when you do what the mob says. Indeed, a young child stands and raises his fist along with the adults with him, and voices can be heard telling him "good job" as he gives them the thumbs up:

How did observers react?

As you might imagine, a number of Twitter users were disgusted by what they saw on video:

  • "Wow. The left turned into fanatic religious ideologues pretty fast," one user wrote.
  • "She should raise her hand...and give them the finger!" another user suggested.
  • "Only one I raise my hands to and kneel for is God himself. These POS need their asses beat. Leave the innocent ppl alone. This is only fueling the patriots to rise and when ppl start reacting these pansies will cry and ask why is this happening boo hoo. Punk ass bitch cowards," another user noted.
  • "They are going to f*** with the wrong person one day...." another user wrote.

And one Twitter user referred to an iconic moment in history to make his point:

Anything else?

There was violence and unrest in D.C. as well Monday night:

The action in the nation's capital appears to be in response to the police-involved shooting of a black man, Jacob Blake, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday, which resulted in rioting and attacks upon law enforcement.
