Twitter finally unlocks New York Post's account after two-week ban over Hunter Biden report

Social media giant Twitter has finally set free the New York Post's account, following weeks of backlash after prohibiting the newspaper from posting on the platform for sharing its own reporting on Hunter Biden.

    What are the details?

Twitter Safety explained in a thread Friday afternoon:

Our policies are living documents. We're willing to update and adjust them when we encounter new scenarios or receive important feedback from the public. One such example is the recent change to our Hacked Materials Policy and its impact on accounts like the New York Post.

In response, we're updating our practice of not retroactively overturning prior enforcement. Decisions made under policies that are subsequently changed & published can now be appealed if the account at issue is a driver of that change. We believe this is fair and appropriate.

The company ended its message by clarifying, "This means that because a specific @nypost enforcement led us to update the Hacked Materials Policy, we will no longer restrict their account under the terms of the previous policy and they can now Tweet again."

Roughly 20 minutes later, the Post sent out a tweet declaring, "We're baaaaaaack!" along with an image of Saturday's cover page showing the Twitter logo bird fleeing a cage. The cover reads, "FREE BIRD! Twitter backs down, finally unlocks Post account after Biden ban."

    What's the background?

Twitter has been under fire from conservatives and other free speech advocates for years — along with Facebook and Google — over allegations of intentionally stifling right-leaning voices.

But Twitter took things to a new level two weeks ago when the outlet locked out the Post, America's oldest newspaper, for publishing documents that came from a laptop owned by Hunter Biden. Messages pulled from the computer led to allegations that Biden's father, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, was aware and even involved with Hunter's foreign business deals, despite the older Biden's repeated denials that he had a knowledge of his son's dealings.

Twitter claimed that the article was in violation of its "Hacked Materials Policy," and shut down the accounts of anyone who shared the Post's article on the platform before reversing its position and restoring every account that had been locked for distributing the material — except the Post.

Protests over Twitter's censorship grew, and company CEO Jack Dorsey was called to testify before Congress earlier this week (along with the heads of Facebook and Google) to answer for the reasoning behind the censorship of legitimate reporting while murderers, anti-Semitic leaders, and dictators were allowed to tweet freely.

Dorsey had argued that the Post could rectify the situation by deleting the tweets of its own reporting that Twitter deemed to be worthy of censorship, but the Post stood its ground and refused to engage in "self censorship" in a decision that appears to have paid off for the outlet.

The Post has seen a massive uptick in Twitter followers since its account was locked. Meanwhile, Business Insider reported that "Twitter's third-quarter earnings sent its stock price as much as 18% lower in early trading on Friday," after the company posted "a major slump in daily active users."

Twitter locks account of White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany after she purportedly shares Hunter Biden story

Twitter locked the account of White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Wednesday, after she cited a New York Post story about Hunter Biden that the platform is working desperately to ban after it was published earlier in the day.

    What are the details?

The New York Post published an exclusive story titled "Smoking-gun email reveals how Hunter Biden introduced Ukrainian business to VP dad," reporting that "Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, to a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm less than a year before the elder Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company."

Within hours, Facebook suppressed the story on its platform, and Twitter completely locked the accounts of users who attempted to share the piece — including the New York Post's primary Twitter account.

The Post reported on all of the censorship following its story, too, including the notification to Ms. McEnany's account, which let her know her that she "violated our rules against distribution of hacked material."

Twitter explained, "We don't permit the use of our services to directly distribute content obtained through hacking that contains private information, may put people in physical harm or danger, or contains trade secrets."

The tweet for which McEnany was purportedly locked out read, "**NEW** Email from Ukrainian executive to Hunter Biden asks Hunter to 'use his influence' on behalf of the firm paying him $50k/mo in email with subject 'urgent issue' obtained by @nypost Father @JoeBiden was in charge of Ukraine relations at time!!"

She allegedly included a link to The Post's story.

    Politico reported:

The Post story included a screenshot of what the paper said was a 2015 email from Burisma adviser Vadym Pozharskyi to Hunter Biden, thanking him for "the opportunity to meet your father." But the email doesn't indicate whether Pozharskyi was describing a meeting that had already occurred or one intended to occur in the future. Nevertheless, the Post reported that the existence of such a meeting undercut Biden's long-held assertions that he had no involvement with his son's business dealings.

Biden's campaign said in a statement, "We have reviewed Joe Biden's official schedules from the time and no meeting, as alleged by the New York Post, ever took place."

However, Politico added that "Biden's campaign would not rule out the possibility that the former VP had some kind of informal interaction with Pozharskyi, which wouldn't appear on Biden's official schedule. But they said any encounter would have been cursory. Pozharskyi did not respond to a request for comment."
