Blaze News original: The disturbing trend of females as young as 12 who've been accused of brutal physical attacks

Last month, Blaze News focused on a dozen disturbing instances when students got brutally violent with teachers.

Well, half the physical attacks we highlighted were carried out by females — two of whom were only 15 years old at the time.

"It's so evil; how could you do that to a person? You have a mother and a father; how could you just beat a man until you take off half of his skull?"

One of the trends Blaze News has been noticing over the last several years is the apparent increase in younger and younger kids getting charged with violent crimes — and arguably an even more surprising stat is how many of them are very young females.

We're talking age 14 — and as young as 12.

Readers of Blaze News likely recall the shocking story of a 14-year-old girl who was charged as an adult with third-degree murder in connection with the brutal traffic cone beating of a 73-year-old man on a Philadelphia street well after midnight during the summer of 2022.

Officials said Gamara Mosley was seen hitting the victim twice with the traffic cone on camera and possibly another time off-camera, WTXF-TV reported.

Sources told WCAU-TV that the victim was walking past a basketball court when he asked a group of teens why they were out so late.

"It's so evil; how could you do that to a person?" Elsie Stephens, the victim's older sister asked WCAU before adding, "You have a mother and a father; how could you just beat a man until you take off half of his skull?"

Authorities also charged a 14-year-old male as an adult with murder in connection with the attack, but his charges were dismissed, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported in March. Other kids turned themselves into police but ultimately weren't charged.

The Inquirer had the following to say in regard to Mosley:

In late February, Mosley’s case was decertified and sent to juvenile court, and she was adjudicated delinquent of murder, conspiracy, and possession of an instrument of crime, according to records. Court administrators did not respond to questions about her sentence. Mosley’s lawyer, Susan M. Lin, declined to comment.

The following are more examples of very young female teens and preteens accused of carrying out violent acts:

Girls, 12 and 13, accused of beating disabled man to death — then walking away in a 'celebratory mood'

Three girls — one 12-year-old and two 13-year-olds — were accused of viciously beating a disabled man and leaving him for dead in a Washington, D.C., alley in 2023. The trio allegedly walked away from the "horrific" beatdown in a "celebratory mood." Prosecutors said there is graphic video of the young girls brutally attacking 64-year-old Reggie Brown. An unknown male in his 20s initiated the assault, police said, noting the male reportedly grabbed Brown by the collar and threw him against a brick wall. According to the New York Post, the girls were walking by at the time and one of them asked the male, "Can I fight him?” The male replied, "Yes." The girls allegedly chased Brown down an alley and threw him to the ground, after which they repeatedly kicked and stomped Brown in the head on the concrete, reportedly pulled down Brown's pants, took off his belt, and then beat him with his own belt.

8 teen girls charged with beating, stabbing to death 59-year-old man in Toronto — 3 suspects are 13 years old

In addition to the three 13-year-olds, police said three 14-year-old girls and two 16-year-old suspects were arrested in the December 2022 "swarming" attack. The victim was found on a street suffering from multiple stab wounds and later was pronounced dead at a hospital, ABC News said. Police said a number of weapons were recovered from the suspects, but the names of the suspects — all of whom were charged with murder — were not released due to their ages.

Two 12-year-old females charged with aggravated assault in a violent attack that left 55-year-old woman unconscious and in critical condition

Police said the victim was "assaulted to the point of unconsciousness" on a train platform in Edmonton, Alberta, and was hospitalized with significant head and facial injuries, CBC News said. The two females approached the victim who was sitting on a bench at night waiting for a train in November 2023, police said, adding that officers caught the females nearby after they fled the scene.

Gang of thugs beat 33-year-old woman unconscious on Philly street; at least 3 female suspects are 12, 13, and 14 years old

Blaze News noted in March 2023 that six suspects between the ages of 11 and 14 were in custody in connection with a brutal beating of a woman on a Philadelphia street that left her unconscious, police told WPVI-TV. One 14-year-old female was arrested at her home while investigators told the station there was a warrant for another 14-year-old female. According to WTXF-TV, at least three females — ages 12, 13, and 14 — are charged with aggravated assault, robbery, and reckless endangerment. Males were involved, too, and there were eight suspects total.

13-year-old female charged in connection with deadly beating of 52-year-old NYC taxi driver

The 13-year-old female suspect faces gang assault and theft of service charges, WABC-TV reported, adding that authorities said she took part in the attack in Queens that killed 52-year-old Kutin Gyimah on Aug. 13, 2022. The suspects were accused of refusing to pay their fare and knocking Gyimah to the ground where he hit his head, the station said, adding that a 15-year-old girl and a pair of 20-year-old males previously were charged in the attack.

4 females — all younger than 15 — accused of violently attacking 20-year-old woman they called a 'white b***h with braids'

Police found the mob of teens in April 2022 kicking and punching the 20-year-old victim while she was on the ground near Boston's Downtown Crossing. The victim suffered a head injury and later told officers she was attacked because of her hair. Mass Live, citing a police report, said the woman told officers a group of girls approached her and demeaned her as a "white bitch with braids." She reportedly told the group she identifies as Hispanic and started to walk away, but one of the teens chased her and pulled her down by her hair. Several others then allegedly joined in on the attack.

Pair of 14-year-old girls accused in beating of 8-year-old boy

Two 14-year-old females and a 15-year-old female were accused in an April 2023 assault against an 8-year-old boy on a sidewalk in Bay City, WNEM-TV reported. The beating was caught on video, and police said the victim suffered minor injuries and didn't need medical attention. At the time of the report, two of the three suspects had been arrested.

13-year-old female arrested, accused of brutally beating girl on school bus in attack that reportedly lasted 15 minutes

After the November 2023 physical attack caught on video, the 13-year-old victim from Acadian Middle School in Lafayette, Louisiana, was hospitalized with head trauma contusions, a broken nose, a busted lip, and an injured arm, KLFY-TV reported. It stemmed from a thrown piece of candy intended for a little boy at a pep rally that ended up hitting another student. The victim reportedly apologized immediately, but apparently that wasn't sufficient. In addition to the female who was arrested and charged with simple assault, police charged a 12-year-old boy with simple assault as well, the station said.

Females, 13 and 14, arrested after girl brutally beaten unconscious in attack at school caught on video

The April 2022 physical attack against the 13-year-old victim took place in the cafeteria of Gulfstream Academy in Hallandale Beach, Florida, WSVN-TV reported, adding that that victim suffered a broken leg and a head injury. Secret Southerland, 14, appeared before a judge on charges of aggravated battery with serious bodily harm, the station said, adding that Southerland was scheduled to spend at least 21 days in jail on her felony charge. The other teen girl was charged with a misdemeanor. The victim has been scared to go back to school, WSVN said.

Pair of 12-year-old females accused of torturing, beating, confining girl at sleepover — even burning her with lighters

Two 12-year-old girls were arrested in connection to an alleged violent assault on another girl in Logansport, Indiana, in late February 2022, WXIN-TV reported. Family members of the victim, a 12-year-old girl, told the station she was invited to what she believed was a sleepover with friends. Renita Contreras, the victim’s aunt, told WXIN her niece instead was "tortured, beaten, confined. Two juvenile females sat on top of her for two hours so she could not breathe, they burned her with cigarette lighters. It goes on and on." The victim also reportedly was cut on her face with a sharp object and had part of her hair shaved, the station said. One of the suspects was charged with the juvenile equivalents of criminal confinement resulting in serious bodily injury, intimidation with a deadly weapon, and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, all felonies, WXIN said.

12-year-old female charged with aggravated battery, kidnapping in attack against 13-year-old girl

Police described a “disturbing” March 2023 assault against a 13-year-old girl at Jack and Jill Park in Albuquerque, the Albuquerque Journal reported. Police said the victim and her friend snuck out of a house to go to a party, after which the pair were separated, and the victim was taken to the park and “severely beaten.” The 12-year-old female suspect and two other teens were charged with aggravated battery and kidnapping, the paper said.

Thug accused of smashing car's rear window with kids in back seat, pointing gun at their mom, head-butting her pleads guilty

The biker accused of stomping and smashing a car's rear window on a Philadelphia street last fall when children, ages 2 and 5, were in the back seat and then pointing a gun at their mother and head-butting her after she confronted him pleaded guilty Wednesday, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office said.

Cody Heron, 27, during a pre-trial status hearing pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of an instrument of crime, officials said, adding that the DA's office announced Heron's conviction Thursday.

What's the background?

Authorities said Heron and fellow bikers and drivers jammed traffic outside City Hall on Oct. 1 during an unauthorized "meet-up."

Nikki Bullock, the mother in question, told WCAU-TV shortly after the ordeal that she was delivering food with her girlfriend and their two children when the assailant hit her car.

"They’re not paying attention to lanes. They’re just doing whatever. So I’m turning in the lane, and he just hits the side of the car," Bullock told WCAU, adding that she argued with the biker afterward.

She noted to the station the biker at that point took things to another level, hopping up on her car's back bumper and stomping on the rear window before jumping high and smashing through the window with both feet.

After Bullock exited the car to confront the biker, the biker pointed a gun at her. Bullock told the station, "It was just, like, it was a little gun, and at that point, my windshield was already broken — so, what was he really going to do to me, for real?"

She continued trying to get in the biker's face, and the biker — who was wearing a helmet — head-butted her and shoved her. The DA's office confirmed that Heron smashed the car's window, head-butted the victim, and brandished a firearm at her.

Bullock still didn't back down, and video shows her shoving the biker back — and he falls sideways along with his two-wheeled ride.

Anything else?

The DA's office said Heron tried to evade authorities by destroying evidence and "even using another person’s online profile to deflect attention from investigators." Heron's sentencing is scheduled for June 5, authorities said.

Here's a report about the incident that aired after Heron's arrest:

Canadian cops charge victim of bat attack with aggravated assault after he allegedly took bat from attacker, hit him with it

Police in a Canadian city have charged the victim of a bat attack with aggravated assault after the victim allegedly took the bat from the attacker and hit him with it several times.

What are the details?

Police in Peterborough — which is in Ontario and just shy of two hours northeast of Toronto — said they were called to a convenience store in the King Street and Bethune Street area around 2:30 a.m. Friday and found that the male clerk was helping a customer when a second male holding a baseball bat entered the store demanding money.

Police said a struggle ensued, and the clerk was struck with the bat before grabbing the bat from the suspect, who fled the store. The clerk followed the suspect out of the store and hit him with the bat several times, police said.

The suspect suffered head injuries and was in a Toronto hospital receiving treatment, police said, adding that emergency medical services treated the 22-year-old clerk at the scene.

Police said they issued an arrest warrant for the 37-year-old male suspect for robbery, assault with a weapon, and possession of weapon.

However, cops also said they arrested the clerk and charged him with aggravated assault and that the clerk was was held in custody and appeared in court Saturday.

Police added that they want to talk to the male customer who was in the store at the time of the incident. Those with information can call Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or go online at www.stopcrimehere.ca.

'This is not about politics ... this is not about race'

It appears members of the public expressed outrage once word got out about police arresting and charging the clerk — so much so that Police Chief Stu Betts issued a rare public statement defending the decision and calling criticism "unfair."

"Yes, this case is unusual, but in a world where security cameras are everywhere, do you really think we would not have seized & reviewed the footage as part of the investigation and prior to laying charges?" Betts asked detractors. "If you follow anything in the media, you will know that I cannot speak to the particulars of this case because it is before the Court, but if you have a desire to know what has led to the charges, follow the case in Court. Allow the facts of the case to guide your commentary and opinion, not your reaction to a headline."

Betts added, "This is not about politics – politics have nothing to do with the facts. This is not about race — as some have suggested. This is not about the perception that criminals go free while victims of crime are penalized — this is about the law. I encourage you to stop and think about things before determining what you think has happened, or that an injustice has taken place, because I’m quite confident that not one person who has made a comment about this case has seen the video or has access to the actual facts."

Anything else?

Daniel Brown — a criminal lawyer and past president of the Ontario Criminal Lawyers Association — said the public may have difficulty understanding the police department's decision and that some might believe the would-be robber "had it coming," CBC News reported.

"The person that went into the store to commit the robbery had premeditated this," Brown told CBC Radio's "Metro Morning," the news network noted.

"The person who was defending themselves — there was no planning, there was no deliberation … so the courts are definitely going to treat this more leniently even if he's found guilty. There are a whole bunch of extenuating circumstances that will come into play," Brown added, according to CBC News.

Brown added that the maximum sentence for aggravated assault is 14 years in prison but that the circumstances in each case do matter when it comes to sentencing, the news network reported.

'Y'all gonna die tonight': Dunkin' workers used guns to threaten customers in drive-thru, police say

Dunkin' Donuts workers in El Paso, Texas, used guns to threaten customers in the store's drive-thru earlier this month, police said.

What are the details?

The city of El Paso said police got a call about a subject with a weapon around 8:30 p.m. Dec 9 at the store located in the 9000 block of Dyer.

When officers arrived, they were told a 41-year-old man had gone through the drive-thru with his girlfriend, police said. While at the drive-thru, the girlfriend tried to order donuts, police said. The girlfriend added to police that the employee was rude, and when she asked to speak to the manager, the employee on the other end of the intercom stated he was the manager and used explicit language.

The woman drove toward the window when one employee walked out of the back of the store, followed by two other employees, police said, adding that all three employees were brandishing handguns.

What's more, police said one of the employees chambered a round in the pistol, pointed the gun at the 41-year-old customer, and verbally threatened him, saying, "Y'all gonna die tonight."

Police said they recovered three guns while arresting the three employees, all of whom were charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and given bonds of $100,000 each. They are:

  • 17-year-old Jesus Dominguez of northeast El Paso
  • 20-year-old Luis Arturo Dominguez of northeast El Paso
  • 19-year-old Elijah Richard Garcia of Chaparral, New Mexico

Police said all three suspects were booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility. It isn't clear which suspect allegedly chambered a round, pointed a gun at the victim, and said, "Y'all gonna die tonight."

Anything else?

A Dunkin' spokesperson emailed the following statement to KFOX-TV:

We are aware of the incident that occurred at our franchised location in El Paso, TX. The franchised team members have been terminated and the franchisee is fully cooperating with police in their investigation. We defer any further comment to the local police department as it's still an active investigation.

Girl, 16, pulls gun on popcorn store owner in theft attempt, cops say. But owner is also armed and shoots girl in leg — then girl gets book thrown at her.

Police said a 16-year-old girl pulled a gun on a popcorn store owner at a Mississippi shopping mall Saturday — but the store owner also had a gun and shot the girl in the leg in what police said was an act of self-defense.

The suspect — Za’Lill D’Chelle Patterson — was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon and got tossed behind bars, WLBT-TV reported. She's also being charged as an adult.

What are the details?

Authorities told the station that Patterson pulled a gun on the store owner at the Northpark Mall in Ridgeland around 5:20 p.m. amid a theft attempt.

But Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers told WLBT the store owner shot first, striking Patterson in the leg, after which, she was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said no one else was injured, the station reported.

What happened next?

Patterson was being held at the Madison County Detention Center, the station said.

WJVT-TV said Patterson — who's from Jackson — is being charged as an adult in the case, and her bond was set at $200,000 Monday in Ridgeland Municipal Court. Patterson also will be required to wear an electric monitor, WJVT reported.

Police said the store owner has been interviewed and has fully cooperated with the investigation, WLBT reported, adding that no charges have been made at this time.

Anything else?

The mall closed after the shooting but was open for business the next day, WLBT reported in a separate story about reaction to the incident.

Cathy Courtney told the station she was inside the mall with her 15-year-old when shots rang out.

“It was several shots, and we all just froze,” Courtney recounted to WLBT. “We were all kind of ducking down, and people started to run. There was an employee hiding in the bathroom. I mean, people were terrified for their life.”

Courtney told the station she got really scared after realizing her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend no longer were with her.

“My daughter said that she took off running. She just started running the opposite way, and her boyfriend followed,” Courtney added to WLBT. “They were able to run to the other side and exit through the mall entrance down at the other end.”

Courtney also told the station she's "just thankful to be here and thankful that my children are alive."
