Former Idaho state representative sentenced to a minimum of 8 years in prison for the rape of a 19-year-old intern

Former Idaho state Rep. Aaron von Ehlinger (R) was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison with an eight-year minimum on Monday. Von Ehlinger was convicted of raping a 19-year-old intern, reported KTVB.

The victim – only referred to as Jane Doe to protect her identity – accused von Ehlinger of raping her in his apartment after the two had gone out to dinner. She reported the attack to a statehouse supervisor, and an investigation was launched in March 2021.

Following Doe's allegations, several additional female coworkers accused the former state representative of pursuing them.

Von Ehlinger, 40, resigned from his position in April 2021 after the ethics community voted that he had "engaged in conduct unbecoming," according to Speaker of the House Scott Bedke.

The Idaho representative denied all wrongdoing and insisted the sexual contact was consensual.

In April 2022, a jury of 12 found von Ehlinger guilty of raping the 19-year-old legislative intern. He underwent a psycho-sexual evaluation, which found that he was a moderate risk. However, the examiners accused von Ehlinger of attempting to deceive them during the evaluation to have a more favorable outcome.

Alexandra Duggan, an investigative reporter for KTVB, was in the courtroom on Monday posting live updates on Twitter. She posted that Jon Cox, von Ehlinger's lawyer, argued that Doe had agreed to go on a date with the former representative and had accepted an invitation to go to his apartment afterward.

"She agreed to go back to his apartment," Cox reported. "She agreed to go upstairs."

Von Ehlinger's attorney claimed that the prosecution painted a false picture that his client was "a monster."

Cox said, "This is not a picture of a monster. This is a military man who provided service to our country." He insisted that Doe and his client were in a consensual relationship.

In von Ehlinger's statement, he claimed that his previous military experience was being used against him in the case. The former state representative said, "My military training and service was used against me in trial. As American soldiers we are trained to do the right thing."

The defense submitted 26 letters of character reference in support of von Ehlinger.

Jane Doe's recorded victim impact statement said she would not be intimidated by von Ehlinger or "let another rapist slip through the cracks."

"I have never felt more ashamed, belittled, powerless and dehumanized," Doe said. "I will never forget the strength and force of his grip."

Ada County Prosecutor Katelyn Farley requested that von Ehlinger be sentenced to a total of 40 years in jail with 15 fixed.

Von Ehlinger's attorney asked that he be sentenced to three years in a rehabilitation center instead of facing prison time.

District Judge Michael Reardon stated, "I have to come to the conclusion that your denial demonstrated lack of empathy... I wrote down two words. Victim and hero. You see yourself as a victim and you see yourself as a hero. I don't see you as either one of those things."

"There were vast differences in age, size, power, between the victim. I am persuaded you manipulated those things to your advantage," Judge Reardon said.

The judge told von Ehlinger that after careful consideration of past allegations and the character witness letters, he concluded the former state representative had "a pattern of explaining, excusing, deflecting, blaming others for situations you find yourself in."

Reardon stated that von Ehlinger's request for rehabilitation was denied because he seemed unwilling to admit any wrongdoing.

In addition to a 20-year sentence, eight years fixed, Reardon ordered von Ehlinger to pay $2,015 in restitution.

Sam Harris says there was 'absolutely' a 'Left-wing conspiracy' against Trump 2020 — but here's why it was 'warranted'

Sam Harris, a neuroscientist, philosopher, New York Times bestselling author, and host of the reputedly non-partisan and intellectually honest "Making Sense" podcast, just destroyed his own credibility, if not his entire career, in less than two minutes by finally admitting what he really thinks about free speech and censorship.

On the YouTube show and podcast "TRIGGERnometry," with hosts Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster, Harris addressed censorship of the New York Post's now-infamous Hunter Biden laptop story ahead of the November 2020 election.

“Hunter Biden literally could have had the corpses of children in his basement, I would not have cared,” Harris stated. "Whatever the scope of Joe Biden's corruption is ... — getting kickbacks from Hunter Biden's deals in Ukraine ... or China — it is infinitesimal compared to the corruption we know Donald Trump is involved in."

Harris goes on to admit that suppressing the information found on Hunter Biden's laptop until after the was "absolutely" a "Left-wing conspiracy to deny the presidency to Donald Trump," but argued that "it was warranted."

"I'm sorry ... but you've just said something I really struggle with there," Kisin interjected. "You're saying you are content with a Left-wing conspiracy to prevent somebody being democratically reelected as president?"

"It was a conspiracy out in the open, but it doesn't matter what part's conspiracy, what part's out in the open," Harris responded. He went on to justify the election-influencing "Left-wing conspiracy" by suggesting that President Donald Trump was the equivalent of "an asteroid hurtling toward Earth."

Keith Olbermann says Tucker Carlson, Tulsi Gabbard are 'Russian assets,' suggests 'detaining them militarily' — and gets lambasted for it

"The View" co-hosts on Monday said Fox News' Tucker Carlson and former U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) should be investigated by the Justice Department and even be criminally detained for alleged pro-Russian views.

A few hours later, far-left noisemaker Keith Olbermann piggybacked on those assertions and called Carlson and Gabbard "Russian assets."

What are the details?

On "The View" episode, co-host Ana Navarro said, "I think DOJ, in the same way that it is setting up a task force to investigate [Russian] oligarchs, should look into people who are Russian propagandists and shilling for Putin. If you are a foreign asset to a dictator, it should be investigated."

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg added, "They used to arrest people for doing stuff like this. If they thought you were colluding with a Russian agent or putting out information or taking information and handing it over to Russia, they used to actually investigate stuff like this. And I guess now, you know, there seems to be no bars."

And co-host Joy Behar declared that Carlson and Gabbard were getting "money" for expressing what she saw as their expression of pro-Russian views.

A few hours later a Twitter user posted a video of "The View" co-hosts in action, calling their declarations "deranged" — and Olbermann fired back in agreement with the show.

"They are Russian Assets, and there is a war," Olbermann wrote in reference to Carlson and Gabbard. "There's a case for detaining them militarily. Trials are a sign of good faith and patience on the part of democracy."

They are Russian Assets and there is a war. There's a case for detaining them militarily. Trials are a sign of good faith and patience on the part of democracy.
— Keith Olbermann (@Keith Olbermann) 1647289557

Others on the left have attacked Carlson for opposing U.S. intervention in Ukraine, Mediaite said, adding that he's floated the idea that American citizens have no direct issue with Putin.

Meanwhile U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Sunday accused Gabbard of "treasonous lies," after which Gabbard said Romney should resign if he can't offer evidence to back up his accusations.

Both Carlson and Gabbard have denied being mouthpieces for Putin.

Not that it matters to Alexandra Chalupa — a longtime Democratic operative and daughter of Ukrainian immigrants who investigated former President Donald Trump's alleged ties to Russia prior to the 2016 election and worked with reporters in that vein. And despite it all turning out to be a hoax, Chalupa appears to be singing that same old song — but this time about Carlson:

.@TuckerCarlson needs to be tried at The Hague as a disinformation agent in Putin\u2019s war. Carlson is a war criminal aiding and abetting a hostile enemy of the U.S. while thousands of American veterans are risking their lives helping Ukraine defend the free world from Putin.
— Alexandra Chalupa (@Alexandra Chalupa) 1647315939

But folks appear to be on to Chalupa. "Alexandra, as an attorney, I’m sure you know the importance of providing evidence to back up your claims," one commenter told her. "Would you like to share with the rest of the class, or nah?"

"We're not at war. Why are you issuing psychotic proclamations? Any dissent to the Biden regime qualifies as being a war criminal?" another user told Chalupa. "You ppl have been hyperbolic for years, but this is over the top. Too far. BTW, what was your role in DNC/Ukraine 2016 election meddling?"

How did folks react to Olbermann?

As you might guess, a number of Twitter users weren't down with Olbermann saying Carlson and Gabbard are "Russian assets":

  • "Yes, nothing says 'democracy' like detaining those with opposing political beliefs," one commenter wrote back to Olbermann.
  • "Sounds like your gut instinct is to encourage a mob lynching of anyone who disagrees with your warmongering," another user told Olbermann. "But you're willing to show 'good faith and patience' by putting American dissidents on trial for wrongthink? Do you understand you're revealing the soul of a fascist?"
  • "Good little fascist, aren't you? Or is it communist?" another commenter asked. "I get you totalitarians mixed up some times. We are not at war. I recommend reviewing your tapes [of] the Bush years, and then checking yourself into the prison you so heartily recommend for others."
  • "You are right on par with the ladies on the view, and NO ONE is surprised by that," another user said to Olbermann.

Anything else?

Mediate said Olbermann’s suggestion occurred the same day it was reported that he wanted to sit in for on-hiatus MSNBC host Rachel Maddow — but she vetoed that idea, which the cable network actually had been considering, according to the Daily Beast.

Trump voters accuse Arizona poll workers of giving them a sharpie pen to thwart their vote, and election officials have responded

Supporters of President Donald Trump spread a rumor that their votes were being thwarted in Arizona by poll workers giving them a sharpie brand pen that would cancel their ballot, but election officials refuted the claims.

Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union chairman, was among those spreading the theory on social media Wednesday.

Twitter restricted the visibility of the tweet over the disputed claims.

Schlapp tweeted, "apparently the use of sharpie pens in gop precincts is causing ballots to be invalidated. Could be huge numbers of mostly Trump supporters."

Local officials respond

Local officials in Arizona attempted to debunk the theory.

"The felt-tip pen ballot controversy burning through social media is false. Don't get caught up in it," read a tweet from the Pima County government.

"Arizona ballot tabulating machines can read ballots marked with a felt tip pen. Felt pens are discouraged because the ink can bleed through," they added.

They went on to explain the process of deciphering the ballot and counting it even if the ink bleeds through on the ballot.

"All ballots in which voter intent can be discerned will be counted. That's also in the manual. No ballots will be discarded because of the method used to color in the ovals," they added.

The public information officer for the Arizona Secretary of State said in an email to the Associated Press that people were misunderstanding the cancellation of ballots.

"If a voter's ballot is listed as canceled, it usually means the voter made an additional ballot request if they needed to have their original ballot replaced," said Sophia Solis. "Depending on when they returned their replacement ballot, that ballot is most likely still being processed by the county."

Despite the statement of election officials, some continued to spread the theory on social media.

"This is one example of fraud and maybe that happened in multiple places and states. Especially those Pro-Trump. The center gave the voter a sharpie to mark the options and this type of ink is not readable by the machine to register the votes," read one tweet.

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich sent a letter demanding answers about the controversy from Maricopa County election officials after receiving hundreds of complaints.

On Wednesday, Trump campaign advisor Steve Cortes admitted in a video that Joe Biden was leading Trump in the ballot count in Arizona by 93,000 votes, but noted that the president only needed 58% of 605,000 votes that were still being counted in order to beat Biden.
