Dawkins can't believe his atheist ally has become a Christian. Ayaan Hirsi Ali explains the error of his doubt.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali was once a central figure among the so-called "New Atheists." She revealed in a Nov. 11, 2023, op-ed that she had converted to Christianity, both for the meaning it provides as well as for its unifying doctrine, which she wrote can "fortify us against our menacing foes."

Militant atheist Richard Dawkins, her longtime friend and "mentor," penned an open letter to Ali three days later, suggesting the Dutch-American human rights activist, mother, and staunch critic of Islam was insincere about her newfound faith.

"You are no more a Christian than I am," wrote Dawkins. "No, Ayaan, you are not a Christian, you are just a decent human being who mistakenly thinks you need a religion in order to remain so."

It appears Ali's sincerity is just one more thing Dawkins has managed to get wrong.

Ali appeared on stage Saturday with Dawkins for the inaugural Dissident Dialogues conference in New York City, where she identified a number of her past intellectual missteps — apparent missteps Dawkins is alternatively committed to keep making — and made abundantly clear both to the audience and Dawkins that she does, in fact, believe in God, pray, and follow Christ.

The former atheist's profession of faith and admission of past errors electrified the audience, which appeared altogether keen to celebrate both Dawkins' loss of a fellow traveler and Christians' gain of a sister.

Background

Blaze News previously reported that Ali, who lives under a fatwa, was raised Muslim in Somalia. Under what she came to regard as a "nihilistic cult of death," Ali suffered genital mutilation, was denied her artistic loves, and was married off to a distant cousin.

While already chased down the road to apostasy by brutal oppression, the Sept. 11, 2001, Islamic terrorist attacks on the U.S. helped accelerate Ali's rejection of Islam. Ali's antipathy toward Islam apparently prompted her not only to reject the Muslim faith but "to adopt an attitude of scepticism towards religious doctrine, discard my faith in God and declare that no such entity existed."

Decades later, she recognized that atheism is a "weak and divisive doctrine."

Ali explained last year in an article for UnHerd that she became a Christian in part because the faith equips believers to internally and externally fight the evils of the day — battles atheism is at best useless in but more often than not on the wrong side of.

Quoting the Catholic apologist G.K. Chesterton, Ali stressed that "when men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything."

"We can't withstand China, Russia and Iran if we can't explain to our populations why it matters that we do. We can't fight woke ideology if we can't defend the civilisation that it is determined to destroy. And we can't counter Islamism with purely secular tools," wrote Ali. "Unless we offer something as meaningful, I fear the erosion of our civilisation will continue. And fortunately, there is no need to look for some new-age concoction of medication and mindfulness. Christianity has it all."

Ali indicated, however, that Christianity was not simply a sword and a shield for the wars of the age but also a source of ultimate meaning.

"I have also turned to Christianity because I ultimately found life without any spiritual solace unendurable — indeed very nearly self-destructive," wrote Ali. "Atheism failed to answer a simple question: what is the meaning and purpose of life?"

Dawkins loses an ally

Dawkins, now a self-described "Cultural Christian," responded to Ali's profession of faith on Substack with his characteristic disbelief, writing, "Christianity makes factual claims, truth claims that Christians believe, truth claims that define them as Christian. Christians are theists. They believe in a divine father figure who designed the universe, listens to our prayers, is privy to our every thought. You surely don't believe that."

"Do you believe Jesus rose from the grave three days after being placed there? Of course you don’t. Do you believe Jesus was born to a virgin? Certainly not," wrote Dawkins. "Someone of your intelligence does not believe you have an immortal soul, which will survive the decay of your brain. Christians believe in a frightful place called Hell, where the souls of the wicked go after they are dead. Do you believe that? Hell no!"

In his response, the atheist conceded Ali's points that Christianity might have "been the inspiration for some of the greatest art, architecture and music the world has ever known," "is morally superior to Islam," and might be "a powerful weapon" against "Putinism, Islamism, and postmodernish wokery pokery" but suggested that such an understanding does not make one a Christian.

Dawkins further suggested that by embracing Christianity, she had succumbed to "weakness."

In March, Dawkins doubled-down, accusing Ali of being a "Political Christian" and noting, "Let's not agree to differ. Let's agree that we don't really differ."

Soulful showdown

Ali addressed Dawkins' doubts about her faith Saturday, indicated she is far more than just a "Political Christian," and expressed regret for having previously aided militant atheists in their attack on religion, reported UnHerd.

With regards to the sincerity of her belief, Ali made clear that while she regards Christianity as critically important from a secular and political viewpoint, she has connected with the faith on a spiritual level and believes in its supernatural propositions.

"On the personal level, yes, I choose to believe in God. And I think that there, we might say, let's agree to disagree," she said. "I think it's something subjective, and it's a choice and there are things that you see and perceive that a different person cannot perceive."

"I'd say you're coming at this from a place of 'there is nothing,' and what has happened to me is that, I think, I have accepted that there is something," said Ali. "When you accept that there is something, there is a powerful entity, for me, the God that turned me around, I think what the vicar is saying no longer sounds nonsensical."

"It makes a great deal of sense, and not only does it make a great deal of sense, it's also layered with the wisdom of millennia," said the former atheist. "And so, like you, I did mock faith in general, Christianity in particular, but I don't do that anymore, and again, I think that's where humility comes into it."

The former atheist's journey to Christ appears to have not only required great humility but some helpful advice.

"I've come down to my knees to say perhaps those people who have always had faith have something that we who lost faith don't have, and people who have faith also, like the woman who told me, 'You ... fight everything and you've lost hope, you've lost faith. Try it. Pray.' I think just in that one word there is so much wisdom," added Ali.

When Ayaan Hirsi Ali wrote that she had become Christian, it sounded political.

But last night she revealed what happened: a spiritual awakening after suicidal depression. Dawkins probed, highlighting “nonsense the vicar says” and Christianity being “obsessed with sin.” Then:
— (@)

Dawkins recycled one of his go-to smears, suggesting Christianity is obsessed with sin. Ali didn't buy the atheist's premise.

"I find that Christianity is actually obsessed with love," Ali said, eliciting applause from the audience. "The teaching of Christ as I see it — and again, I'm a brand new Christian — but what I'm finding out, which is the opposite of growing up as a Muslim and the message of Islam, but the message of Christianity of love. It's a message of redemption."

"It's a story of renewal and birth," continued Ali. "And so, Jesus dying and rising again for me symbolizes that story, and in a small way, I felt I had died and was reborn. And that story of redemption and birth, I think makes Christianity actually a very, very powerful story for the human condition, of human existence."

Horowitz: The Texas Rangers have come full-circle in defense of state and national sovereignty

Our nation did not have a Border Patrol until 1924. There obviously was no mass migration in the 1800s, but who secured our border against hostile forces or dangerous infiltrations? The Texas Rangers.

A report from the Texas adjutant general to then-Texas Governor John Ireland in September 1884 illuminates the dangers of Mexican raids into Texas and the extensive nature of Texas’ “lone star” approach to dealing with it. The adjutant general paints a picture very similar to the one today, in which the state felt abandoned by the federal government. “For some reason Texas, like many other border States and Territories, was left by the general government without adequate protection against these constantly recurring invasions and raids, and, as a matter of absolute and overpowering necessity, the State had to make some regular and systematic provision for affording protection and giving security, if possible, to her people.”

The document shows the tension between the Texas delegation and federal officials in their quest spanning decades to try to secure adequate reimbursement from the federal government for doing what should have been a federal job. Indeed, as late as 1911, Texas Senator Charles Culberson was demanding reimbursement for Texas Ranger border operations 60 years before!

History doesn’t only repeat itself; it rhymes. But back then our government was still growing in its job. Today, it has regressed to the point of breaking its social compact with the states.

As illegal aliens gathered at our border en masse, daily infiltrations were reaching an unfathomable 12,000 a day. Yet with Texas Rangers, specialized Texas DPS units, and Texas National Guardsmen plugging the gaps in Brownsville, and Gov. Greg Abbott finally agreeing to allow them to return the infiltrators to the other side of the river, the numbers actually shrank.

“I am being told that because of these Texas soldiers at all the previously chaotic Matamoros crossings, immigrants are moving to Piedras Negras to cross at Eagle Pass as an alternative. Worth watching that as, for the first time since I’ve been in town, the river here is placid.”
— Todd Bensman (@Todd Bensman) 1683917902
“All quiet on the Matamoros front from the Texas vantage point of this new state tactic that shut down a mass migration onslaught through this sector - using brawn at to enforce a Thou Shalt Not Pass edict from ⁦@GregAbbott_TX⁩
how it went down: https://t.co/VOAnqvl3ZZ”
— Todd Bensman (@Todd Bensman) 1684011825
“Sources tell me there were only about 6,000 apprehensions within CBP at the southwest border yesterday— 4,300+ by Border Patrol and roughly 1,700 by Office of Field Operations (OFO).

About 22,500 migrants were in CBP custody at last check this morning.”
— Ali Bradley (@Ali Bradley) 1684104823

These are still shockingly high numbers, but it shows that in the areas where we actually repatriate the illegal aliens, it makes a huge dent in the invasion. What this demonstrates is that if Texas only had the resources to do this at all of the critical crossings along its 1,200-mile international border, we’d go a long way toward stemming the tide and won’t need to suffer until a possible Republican president takes over in 2025.

In order to fill in the gaps, Gov. Abbott should call upon other Republican governors to send their Guardsmen and other law enforcement assets to help bolster the numbers of Texas law enforcement in repelling the invasion. Gov. Ron DeSantis has already offered such assistance. Idaho has also sent a contingent of state troopers to Texas this week. An effort from at least 20 states would allow us to bypass the feds and to solve a major issue right now without putting all of our hopes into the results of a federal election a long time from now.

State enforcement is the only way to ensure we are blocking the invasion rather than rolling out the red carpet to the cartel boatmen, which is unfortunately what Border Patrol has done. So many in Border Patrol are suffering from low morale because they are now forced to operate in a way that undermines their core mission. If Governor Abbott is now serious about making Texas law enforcement the new Border Patrol, he should offer incentives for current Border Patrol agents operating in Texas to switch teams and join the Texas law enforcement at the border.

This idea, of course, will require more authorities and appropriations. With precious few days left in the legislative session, Abbott needs to lean in on Speaker Dade Phelan to pass HB 20. This bill would create a permanent “Border Protection Unit” and also make it a felony for illegal aliens to trespass into Texas. Unfortunately, that bill was killed in committee last week. House leaders instead performed a bait-and-switch and placed the Border Protection Unit into another bill, but then subjected its authority to the approval of county governments. The problem is that most of the border county governments are run by Democrats, and frankly, some have a history of being in with the cartels.

There is a need for Abbott and Lt. Gov Dan Patrick to step up and demand that this session not end before the creation of a border unit with full authority to repel the invasion. They should also incentivize county governments to deploy resources to repel the invasion as well. Current Texas Code allows the sheriff, county judge, or mayor to “call into service the portion of the reserve militia needed for the period required in case of war, insurrection, invasion or prevention of invasion, suppression of riot, tumult, or breach of peace or to aid civil officers to execute law or serve process.” In other words, we need an all-hands-on-deck approach. The legislature will not meet again until 2025.

This will not be the first time Texas leads the way in defense of the border. This past week demonstrates that Texas personnel are highly effective if given enough resources to repel the invasion. It’s time to make the old adage “don’t mess with Texas” meaningful again.

'Defund green energy': NJ residents rally against offshore wind, call for moratorium due to uptick in whale deaths

Hundreds of New Jersey residents gathered on Sunday to rally against offshore wind energy due to a recent uptick in whale deaths in the area, Fox News Digital reported.

Lawmakers, local officials, environmentalists, and residents attended the Sunday rally in Point Pleasant Beach. Attendees called on officials to "defund green energy" and requested a federal moratorium on offshore wind power.

Protesters claimed that the recent deaths of 10 whales discovered in New Jersey and New York might be linked to offshore wind energy construction. Those deaths included a 35-foot humpback whale that washed up on a New Jersey beach last week. Another 25-foot whale was found dead in Rockaway Beach, New York, days later. Since December, additional dead whales have been discovered in Maryland and Virginia.

During the rally, Republican Representative Chris Smith of New Jersey stated, "Today, the whales are sending us a tragic message that demands transparency and accountability — both of which has been sorely missing from Governor Murphy's plan to use New Jersey's coast as the prime location for the offshore wind industry in the U.S."

Smith noted that the whales' unexplained deaths had raised questions and concerns regarding the role the offshore wind construction may have played.

"There is great concern for the potential serious—even catastrophic— damage to marine ecosystems leading to the destruction of the New Jersey's fishing and tourism businesses if hundreds, and even thousands, of wind turbines are installed off the New Jersey coast," Smith added. "Thus far, sound surveys and the underwater noise generated by acoustic vessels have occurred, but next steps include construction, pile driving creating high intensity underwater noise."

Smith called for an independent analysis of the impact of offshore wind construction noises on marine wildlife. He called for the projects to be put on hold in the meantime.

Meanwhile, environmental groups claimed no link between the whales' deaths and offshore wind turbine construction.

"We have always worked alongside the environmental community to protect marine life and follow rigorous standards when developing projects," American Clean Power told Fox News Digital. "The recent whale strandings are tragic, and it's disheartening to see this tragedy being used as an excuse by clean energy detractors trying to stop the growth of a new energy source for Americans."

"It's just a cynical disinformation campaign," Greenpeace oceans director John Hocevar told USA Today.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called the unexplained whale deaths "unusual mortality events."

"[T]here is no evidence to support speculation that noise resulting from wind development-related site characterization surveys could … cause mortality of whales, and no specific links between recent large whale mortalities and currently ongoing surveys," NOAA stated.

Arizona election officials report issues with vote-counting machines at 20% of polling locations in Maricopa County

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors chairman Bill Gates reported on Tuesday morning that approximately 20% of the voting centers in Arizona's largest county are experiencing issues with vote-counting tabulators.

"About 20% of the locations out there where there's an issue with the tabulator where some of the ballots that after people have voted them, they try and run them through the tabulator and they're not going through," Gates stated.

“#BREAKING Chairman @maricopacounty Board of Supervisors @billgatesaz says 20% voting centers are having issues w/tabulators. He says the ballot can still be dropped in the box, it will just get centrally tabulated tonight. He says they’re working to fix the issue. #Election2022”
— Ali Bradley (@Ali Bradley) 1667925045

Gates stated that if the tabulator does not accept a ballot, voters can place their ballots inside a "secure box," and they will be manually counted in the evening at a central counting location. A majority of Arizona counties tabulate ballots this way, Gates added.

"This will function much like early voting functions, in that we would get your ballot back, once we've signature-verified it, we would send it to our central tabulators," Gates said. "Ballots that are [at the central location] will already be signature-verified, so we won't need to confirm identity but we will central-tabulate them."

Voters across the county took to social media to report tabulator malfunctions at multiple Maricopa County locations. Residents captured videos of election workers announcing issues with the vote-counting machines.

"We have two tabulators. One of the tabulators is not working," an election worker at one Maricopa voting center explained to voters waiting in line to cast their ballots. "The other tabulator is taking about 75% successful. So, 25% of them are being misread. And it could be a printer issue, or it could be the tabulator itself. So, when it's misread, you have an option to put it into what's called box three, and it gets read. Whether it goes downtown and gets read manually or whether it gets refed into our tabulator."

Another video shared on social media captured an election worker explaining how ballots placed into box three will be counted.

"Tonight, a Republican and a Democrat will sit and go through all of the misread ballots all over the county and count them," the election worker explained. She added that none of the tabulators at the voting location were working correctly.

"Nothing's working for the last half hour," she noted.

According to the elections department, as of Tuesday, there were 2,463,264 active voters in Maricopa County. As of 11 a.m. ET, roughly 44,000 voters had cast their ballots in person.

Katie Hobbs (D), Arizona's current secretary of state and a gubernatorial candidate, refused calls to recuse herself from overseeing the midterm elections.

The tabulator issues in Maricopa County are expected to delay the announcement of the results in the critical gubernatorial race between Democrat Katie Hobbs and Republican Kari Lake and the Senate race between Democrat Mark Kelly and Republican Blake Masters.

Arizona Sheriff's Association adopts position of no confidence in CBP commissioner

On September 6, the Arizona Sheriff’s Association expressed no confidence in Chris Magnus as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner. The letter addressed to President Joe Biden stated that the commissioner has failed in his duty to secure the southern border and is, therefore, unfit to lead.

Journalist Ali Bradley shared an image of the letter, signed by Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels and Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, on Twitter yesterday.

“JUST IN: Arizona’s Sheriffs issue a vote of no confidence in @CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus saying he’s not fit to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection due to the increase in illegal immigration and illicit drugs coming across the border:”
— Ali Bradley (@Ali Bradley) 1663017905

In a follow-up post, Bradley reported that all 15 Arizona counties were present and unanimously voted "no confidence." The Southwestern Border Sheriff’s Coalition adopted the position as well, Bradley wrote.

The two sheriffs attributed Magnus’s failure to protect the border to his lack of federal experience, which they claimed has “become increasingly apparent.”

The letter stated, “Since Commissioner Magnus was appointed nearly nine months ago, we have continued to see an influx of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs cross our Southern border. What we have not seen is an increased partnership from the federal government including CBP to assist local law enforcement in preventing this activity.”

Efforts made by the CBP and the federal government to prevent drug trafficking and illegal immigration have been “woefully inadequate,” the Arizona Sheriff’s Association wrote.

Before being appointed to CBP commissioner, Magnus was the Tucson police chief. The Senate committee in October 2021 asked Magnus if he would describe the situation at the border as a “crisis.”

Magnus responded, “I agree that the current level of encounters at the southwest border presents significant challenges, particularly combined with an immigration system that most members seem to agree is broken.”

The Arizona Sheriff’s Association expressed a high priority on securing the southern border. “Unfortunately, the current administration and Commissioner Magnus do not appear to share this priority and the effects are being felt in Arizona and across the country,” the letter read.

The association specifically pointed to the increase in illegal drugs, overdoses, and violent crime across the country due to an inadequately protected border.

“As a result, the Arizona Sheriffs Association has formally adopted a position of No Confidence that Commissioner Magnus is fit to continue to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection,” the sheriffs noted.

The CBP did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Texas National Guard identifies soldier who went missing while trying to save drowning migrants who were reportedly smuggling drugs

The Texas National Guardsman who went missing while attempting to save two drowning migrants at the southern border has been identified. The search for the missing Texas National Guardsman continues.

The soldier who went missing in Maverick County has been identified as 22-year-old Bishop E. Evans from Arlington, Texas. The department notified the missing soldier's family on Friday night.

Migrants were trying to cross a river in Eagle Pass on Friday. Two migrants "appeared to be drowning as they illegally crossed the river from Mexico to the United States," officials told Fox News. Bishop – who was assigned to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star border initiative – tried to save the drowning migrants.

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber told the Associated Press that "Evans took off his jacket and left his radio before going into the water around 8:30 a.m. Friday."

“He jumped in the river,” Schmerber added. “They never saw him come out."

A multiple agency search and rescue effort commenced after Evans went missing in the river, including search parties, boats, and helicopters. Dive teams joined the search shortly after, but were forced to suspend operations after the force of river currents strengthened.

The Texas Military Department released an update regarding the search on Sunday: "The search for the missing TMD soldier will continue until we have exhausted all available resources. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family of the soldier."

In a statement to Fox News, the Texas Military Department confirmed that Texas Rangers determined that the two migrants "were involved in illicit transnational narcotics trafficking."

The Texas Military Department said of Bishop:

SPC Evans, 22, a field artilleryman from Arlington, Texas is assigned to A Battery, 4-133 Field Artillery Regiment in New Braunfels Texas, and joined the Texas Army National Guard in May 2019. He returned in the fall of 2020 from mobilization to Operation Spartan Shield in Kuwait. During this mobilization, his dedication, talents, and tactical prowess led his leadership to regularly assign him to operations in Iraq in support of Special Operations Forces for short periods of time, while then rotating back into Kuwait.

Gov. Abbott said: "Texas National Guard Specialist Bishop Evans is a hero who risked his life in service to Texas & America. Law enforcement & rescue teams continue a relentless search for him. Join us in prayer for a successful recovery. Updates will be provided when they become available."

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) tweeted: "SPC. Evans will forever be remembered for the bravery and compassion he showed while saving lives in the Rio Grande. We will make sure this young soldier’s sacrifice will never be forgotten."

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) wrote: "Tragic loss for Texas National Guard and family and friends of Bishop E. Evans. We are all praying for their loss. Our border is out of control and extremely dangerous. We must secure the border immediately."

Ted Cruz refuses reporter's request to put on a mask: 'You're welcome to step away if you like'

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) hit out at a reporter after the journalist requested the senator put on a mask during a Wednesday news conference.

What are the details?

Cruz held a news conference Wednesday with other Republican senators in order to discuss the crisis at the U.S southern border.

In a video of the conference, a reporter can be heard asking, "Would you mind putting a mask on for us?"

Cruz responded, "Yeah, when I'm talking to the TV camera I'm not going to wear a mask, and all of us have been immunized," gesturing to his fellow lawmakers.

The reporter pressed further and insisted that Cruz putting on a mask would "make us feel better."

Cruz, however, fired back, "You're welcome to step away if you like," and added that the "whole point of a vaccine" was so that he no longer had to wear a mask.

It seems fair to point out that White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who does not wear a mask during her White House press briefings, and has defended that move by saying, "If health and medical experts told me I should wear a mask while I was briefing, I would do it. But I am following the guidelines they are giving us, as is the president."

Cruz on Thursday morning shared a clip of his interaction with the reporter and captioned it, "Lefty reporters have lost their minds. #commonsense."

Anything else?

Cruz in October also pushed back on wearing masks during a gaggle outside a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing room.

A CNN reporter at the time asked if Cruz would put on his mask to deliver remarks, to which the Texas lawmaker curtly responded, "No, because I'm going to talk to the TV. Stand six feet apart, which is what the CDC guideline [is]."

Cruz insisted that a mask was unnecessary and said that he was clearly standing six feet from others at the time.
