College students say American flag symbolizes 'genocide,' 'extremism,' 'injustice,' and 'sins we've committed against others'

Just prior to Flag Day on Monday, Campus Reform reporter Ophelie Jacobson visited the University of Texas at Dallas to chat with students about what they believe the American flag symbolizes.

And not only did they not know much if anything about Flag Day, most of the interviewees didn't have a very high opinion about Old Glory.

What are the details?

When Jacobson asked one student what things come to mind when he sees an American flag, he offered a doozie of a response: "A lot of things come to mind. First of all, war. Second of all ... we've also taken a bit of land from Native Americans, so that's unfortunate, too. And it's just really terrible that we've done all these things, and this flag kind of reminds me of that — of all the sins we've committed against others."

She then asked if he agreed with other students who say the flag symbolizes oppression, racism, and genocide, and he replied, "Yes, wholeheartedly. We've done so much under that banner ... and the whole patriotism thing just sweeps all that narrative of racism, oppression, and the like under the rug."

A female student couldn't have been more simpatico.

"I guess I don't look at [the American flag] positively ... I do look at it negatively," she said, adding that "I don't agree with [what] this country was found upon completely ... a lot of injustice ... a lot of genocide. I see a lot American flags on church grounds, which i find very ... like, not trustworthy 'cuz I don't like the idea of tying in politics with religion, which is what this country does, even still today."

A different male student said that "absolute love of the American flag ... is very obviously correlated to, like, extremism ... nationalism."

Another female student said she's "definitely seen the American flag used as a racist symbol ... you see people show up to, like, [former President Donald] Trump rallies with their flags, waving it, screaming in people's faces. Well, then, yes ... it makes it obvious what it means to them."

Anything else?

Not surprisingly, some students mistook Flag Day (June 14) for Juneteenth (June 19).

In addition, when asked if Flag Day should be celebrated, the first male student had a terse reply: "F*** no."

And the female student who disagreed with American flags on church grounds said that while people should celebrate Flag Day if they choose to, she "personally wouldn't because I don't entirely love this place as much as some people do."

Dave Rubin ROASTS NYT's Mara Gay for saying American flags send ‘disturbing’ message of 'whiteness'

On "The Rubin Report" Tuesday, BlazeTV host Dave Rubin showed a clip from MSNBC's "Morning Joe" in which New York Times editorial board member, Mara Gay, described how disturbed she was when she saw "dozens of American flags" on pickup trucks in Long Island over the weekend.

In a conversation prompted by a Washington Post op-ed titled, "Too many people are still underestimating the Trump threat," Gay told host Mika Brzezinski that "tens of millions of Trump voters" in America "continue to believe that their rights as citizens are under threat by simple virtue of having to share the democracy with others. I think as long as they see Americanness as the same as one with whiteness, this is going to continue. We have to figure out how to get every American a place at the table in this democracy, but how to separate Americanness, America, from whiteness. Until we can confront that and talk about that, this is really going to continue."

She went on to illustrate her point by describing her "disturbing" visit to Long Island over the weekend.

"I saw, you know, dozens and dozens of pickup trucks with explicatives [sic] against Joe Biden on the back of them, Trump flags and in some cases, just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing, because essentially the message was clear: It was 'This is my country. This is not your country. I own this,'" she said.

Dave called the MSNBC segment "a perfect example" of how the corporate media "launders lies."

"The idea that a New York Times journalist goes on MSNBC to comment on a Washington Post story shows you how they launder the lies," Dave pointed out.

"[Gay] gets up there and says she fears the American flag. And don't take my word for it, listen to what she's saying: When she sees the American flag that somehow triggers a thought in her mind about white supremacy ... it's just a bunch of self-serving, myopic drivel. That really is what it is," he continued.

"I don't mean to make this about you, Mara, but the point is you're obsessed with race," Dave said. "Do you think it's possible, could it be possible, that people — and I know this is crazy, I'm going to need a little bit of a leash here, people — do you think it's possible that somewhere in America there are some people who are proud of the American flag? And proud of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and this wonderful country that we've had for 250 years, that has given more freedom to more people than could have ever been imaginable?"

"Do you think there are some people that are worried that we're losing that — not having anything to do with race, but that we're actually trading in equality for equity and erasing our own history and demolishing the things that freed people in the name of your crazed social justice?" Dave asked. "It has nothing to do with them being racist. It has everything to do with them caring about freedom and liberty and that kind of stuff. Do you think that that's possible? The answer, I suspect — and Mara, you're welcome to come on the show to tell me this yourself — but I suspect her answer would be 'no' because they see everything in a racialized world."

NYT editorial board member ‘disturbed’ by ‘dozens of American flags’ over weekend: Country needs to 'separate America from whiteness'

A New York Times editorial board member said that she was "disturbed" upon seeing "dozens of American flags" on Americans' vehicles over the weekend and insisted that the country needs to "separate America from whiteness."

What are the details?

Mara Gay, also an MSNBC analyst, appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Tuesday, where she recalled the concerning moment a summer weekend turned into a horror movie.

"The reality is here that we have a large percentage of the American — I don't know how big it is, but we have tens of millions of Trump voters who continue to believe that their rights as citizens are under threat by simple virtue of having to share the democracy with others," Gay told "Morning Joe" co-host Mika Brzezinski. "I think as long as they see Americanness as the same as one with whiteness, this is going to continue. We have to figure out how to get every American a place at the table in this democracy, but how to separate Americanness, America, from whiteness. Until we can confront that and talk about that, this is really going to continue.

"I was on Long Island this weekend, visiting a really dear friend, and I was really disturbed," Gay continued.

Gay said that she became "disturbed" when she saw vehicles sporting American flags, and vocal support for former President Donald Trump — including outright disdain for President Joe Biden.

"I saw, you know, dozens and dozens of pickup trucks with expletives against Joe Biden on the back of them, Trump flags and in some cases, just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing, because essentially the message was clear: It was 'This is my country. This is not your country. I own this,'" Gay continued.

She added that what's even more concerning, perhaps, is the "large percentage of Americans" who are insistent on pretending that "this isn't the threat that it is."

"[U]ntil we're ready to have that conversation, this is going to continue," she insisted. “What really is concerning to me as well is, it's not just Democrats in Congress. I think there's a large percentage of Americans, even some of my colleagues in journalism, who are invested in some way in pretending that this isn't the threat that it is. That is the real concern. Because, you know, the Trump voters who are not going to get on board with democracy, they're a minority. You can marginalize them, long-term. But if we don't take the threat seriously, then I think we're all in really bad shape."
