Merrick Garland claims discriminatory 'patterns and practices' made George Floyd death 'possible'

The Minneapolis police discriminated against citizens, violated rights, and were responsible for unlawful policing habits that made the death of George Floyd possible, according to Attorney General Merrick Garland, as reported by ABC News.

The report from the Department of Justice said the police department discriminated against black and native Americans and used unnecessary and excessive force. The two-year investigation also determined that the department violated the freedom of speech rights of protesters, as well.

"The patterns and practices we observed made what happened to George Floyd possible," Garland said. "As one city leader told us, 'These systemic issues didn't just occur on May 25, 2020. There were instances like that that were being reported by the community long before that.'"

"We also found that MPD officers routinely disregard the safety of people in their custody. Our review found numerous incidents in which MPD officers responded to a person saying that they could not breathe with a version of, 'You can breathe, you're talking right now,'" Garland continued.

"As I told George Floyd's family this morning, his death has had an irrevocable impact on the Minneapolis community, and our country and on the world. His loss is still felt deeply by those who loved and knew him and by many who did not. George Floyd should be alive today," the attorney general continued.

An example given by the law enforcement official involved a 2017 case in which a Minneapolis police officer "shot and killed an unarmed woman who he said had 'spooked him' when she approached his squad car."

"The woman had called 911 to report a possible sexual assault in a nearby alley," he added.

That appears to be in reference to a case in which the accused officer was a Somali immigrant, Mohamed Noor, who had been employed for just two years. The victim was Justine Ruszczyk Damond, an Australian-American.

The report claimed that stops, searches, and force were used disproportionately against black and native Americans, Garland said. "The data showed, for example, that MPD stopped black and Native American people nearly six times more often than white people in situations that did not result in arrest or citation."

In another example from 2015, it was cited that a four Somali-American teens were asked by a white officer if they remember "what happened in 'Black Hawk Down' when we killed a bunch of your folk?"

"I'm proud of that. We didn't finish the job over there. If we had, you guys wouldn't be over here," the officer reprtedly said on video.

The report also included alleged racist remarks, as well as discriminatory remarks police made to arrestees.

WATCH: Biden tells one 'freaking weird' story about the time he left a dead dog on a woman’s doorstep

While reminiscing about the good old days serving on the New Castle County Council, President Joe Biden shared a strange tale about the time he put a dead dog on the doorstep of a female constituent who was "not of the same persuasion as I was politically."

Speaking at the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference on Tuesday, Biden told his audience “I know from personal experience how hard the job you have is,” before launching into an amusing little anecdote about the time a mean, rich lady (who was surely one of those awful Republicans) called the council to insist a dead dog be removed from her yard.

"I represented a middle to working class district. There was one very wealthy neighborhood. And I got a call one night, a woman said to me – obviously not of the same persuasion as I was politically – called me and said, 'there’s a dead dog on my lawn,'" Biden said.

“And I said, ‘yes ma’am, did you call the county?’ And she said, ‘Yes, they’re not here.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’ll get 'em in the morning,’” he continued.

“She said, ‘I want it removed now, I pay your salary.' So I went over. I picked it up. She said, 'I want it out of my front yard.' I put it on her doorstep,” he added, grinning at his own cleverness.

A video clip of Biden's unusual speech made the rounds on social media with mixed reviews.

RNC research pointed out that Biden had told this story before but, interestingly, it had a different ending at the time.

In December 2020, Biden told the same group this story but said he “arrived in a pickup truck and **removed** the animal himself that night.”https://www.naco.org/articles/biden-harris-roots-lie-county-government …

Some people actually liked Biden's story, or at least they didn't completely hate it.

I must say I found his story humorous and this was probably one of the most coherent speeches I've seen him make in a while.

Am I missing something??

Then there were those who just couldn't bring themselves to appreciate Biden's comedic genius:

Support erupts for Kyle Rittenhouse to sue media, Democrats for defamation after acquittal: 'Starting with Joe Biden'

Should Kyle Rittenhouse file defamation lawsuits against the media corporations and politicians who have allegedly defamed him by calling him a white supremacist and repeated outright lies about his case?

Support for Rittenhouse to do just that erupted Friday after he was found not guilty on all five criminal charges against him.

What is the background?

In the wake of the verdict, prominent politicians continue to call Rittenhouse a white supremacist.

Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.), for example, not only called Rittenhouse a white supremacist, but alleged the entire trial was "white supremacy in action."

"The judge. The jury. The defendant. It's white supremacy in action. This system isn't built to hold white supremacists accountable," Bush reacted to the verdict. "It's why Black and brown folks are brutalized and put in cages while white supremacist murderers walk free. I'm hurt. I'm angry. I'm heartbroken.'

Countless examples exist of prominent Democrats, media members, and other figureheads with platforms making similar comments. President Joe Biden, when he was a candidate, also lumped Rittenhouse into white supremacy without evidence to support such a claim.

What was the reaction?

Blaze Media's Glenn Beck said he wants to donate money to Rittenhouse's legal fund, so that he can "sue the CRAP out of corporate media."

"I'd give money...for his offense, to now go on the offense and sue the crap out of corporate media for what they've done. They lied about him the whole time. They've destroyed his life," Beck said. "It is time to say, 'enough is enough' with the corporate media."

"President Biden should be issuing an apology today. He has smeared him," Beck added. "Everybody has smeared this guy. Where are the apologies?"

— Glenn Beck (@Glenn Beck) 1637347083

Fox News host Sean Hannity agreed.

"Kyle Rittenhouse should sue them all, all of them," Hannity said on his Friday show. "Starting with Joe Biden."

Conservative commentator Matt Walsh said, "I hope Rittenhouse bankrupts all of you dirtbags in media who smeared him as a white supremacist. I hope he ruins your life. I want you to suffer. It's what you deserve. It's justice."

Ann Coulter said, "Biden has no immunity for calling Rittenhouse a 'white supremacist' when he was a private citizen running for president. Rittenhouse has got to sue Biden."

Meanwhile, Nick Sandmann — who settled lawsuits against the Washington Post and CNN for undisclosed amounts of money — told Fox News on Friday that he would sue the media and others if he were in Rittenhouse's shoes, but said the decision to pursue litigation is ultimately up to Rittenhouse.

What about Biden?

Lawyer Todd McMurtry, who helped Sandmann settle his defamation lawsuits, said that Biden's tweet involving Rittenhouse could potentially be "actionable."

"What you take from that tweet is that Kyle Rittenhouse was using his rifle and engaging in white supremacist misconduct, so it's actionable," McMurtry told Fox News. "Not necessarily going to win, but it's actionable."

While it may be "actionable," other legal experts told the Daily Caller that winning a defamation case would prove difficult for Rittenhouse.

"In defamation cases, different standards apply whether you are considered to be a public figure or a private figure," said Zack Smith, a legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation. "If you're considered to be a public figure, you have to show that the media outlet or the individual making or repeating the factual statement about you did so with actual malice or reckless disregard. That actual malice standard is very difficult to overcome."

Meanwhile, Lincoln Bandlow, a First Amendment lawyer, explained the phrase "white supremacist" is rather ambiguous, making it difficult to prove defamation.

"The argument would be no one even knows what that means anymore because it's so ridiculous, so it wouldn't be an objective provable statement of fact in any way, so it would be a protected opinion," Bandlow said. "Defamation only applies to false factual statements. Someone can't be sued for making, stating an opinion, their opinion about someone."

Anything else?

Fundraising platform GoFundMe announced Friday after the Rittenhouse verdict that it would permit a fundraiser for Rittenhouse because he was acquitted.

GoFundMe's Terms of Service prohibit raising money for the legal defense of an alleged violent crime. In light of the Kyle Rittenhouse trial, we want to clarify when and why we removed certain fundraisers in the past.

Once charges for a violent crime were brought against Kyle Rittenhouse in 2020, GoFundMe removed fundraisers that were started for the defendant's legal defense. We did this as part of our regular monitoring efforts; in addition to those fundraisers, our Trust & Safety team removed hundreds of other fundraisers between August and December 2020 — unrelated to Rittenhouse — that we determined were in violation of this long-standing policy.

If someone is acquitted of those charges, as Rittenhouse was today, a fundraiser started subsequently for their legal defense and other expenses would not violate this policy. A fundraiser to pay lawyers, cover legal expenses or to help with ongoing living expenses for a person acquitted of those charges could remain active as long as we determine it is not in violation of any of our other terms and, for example, the purpose is clearly stated and the correct beneficiary is added to the fundraiser.

Biggest lie of the night? Joe Biden says no one lost their health insurance under Obamacare

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden told a brazen lie about Obamacare Thursday evening during the final presidential debate in Nashville, Tennessee, claiming that no one lost their private health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act.

President Donald Trump attacked Biden's health care plan, accusing the Democratic nominee's plan of being "socialized medicine" that would terminate "180 million" private insurance plans.

In response, Biden said that if the Supreme Court declares Obamacare unconstitutional he will pass new health care legislation "with a public option." He declared his support for private health insurance, arguing that a public option would increase competition by giving private health insurance plans something to compete against.

Then he told a whopper.

"The reason why I had such a fight with 20 candidates for the nomination was I support private insurance," Biden said. "Not one single person with private insurance would lose their insurance under my plan, nor did they under Obamacare. They did not lose their insurance unless they chose they wanted to go to something else."

Biden's claim is demonstrably false. After the Affordable Care Act took effect in 2013, more than 5 million Americans received cancellation letters from their insurance companies, informing them that the health insurance plans they had did not meet the standards of Obamacare.

President Obama's promise that "if you like your health care pan, you can keep your health care plan" was rated as PolitiFact's Lie of the Year in 2013.

"So this fall, as cancellation letters were going out to approximately 4 million Americans, the public realized Obama's breezy assurances were wrong," Politifact wrote.

In fact, NBC News reported in 2013 that the Obama administration knew that millions of Americans would lose their health insurance under Obamacare. While the Affordable Care Act had a provision that allowed for some health insurance polices to be "grandfathered" in, meaning consumers could keep their plans even if they didn't meet the essential benefits mandates required by Obamacare, the provision was written so narrowly that many of the plans didn't qualify.

At the debate, Biden promised that his plan to expand Obamacare with a public option would also reduce insurance premiums. But the Obama administration made similar claims about Obamacare, and the truth was that Obamacare significantly increased health insurance premiums by as much as 24.4% beyond what they would have been if costs rose naturally, according to one study.

Many individuals who remember having their insurance plans cancelled spoke out on social media.
