Ocasio-Cortez demands Biden reverse 'cruel' decision to build border wall: 'A wall does nothing to deter people'

Socialist Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York lambasted President Joe Biden for his "cruel" decision to build a border wall to ease the migrant crisis.

Ocasio-Cortez issued the statement Thursday after the Biden administration announced the reversal on building up a border wall. The order will allow the government to sidestep environmental regulations in order to resume a plan initiated during the Trump administration.

"The Biden administration was not required to expand construction of the border wall - and they certainly were not required to waive several environmental laws to expedite the building," wrote Ocasio-Cortez.

"The President needs to take responsibility for this decision and reverse course," she added.

"A wall does nothing to deter people who are fleeing poverty and violence from coming to the United States." Ocasio-Cortez continued. "You do not risk your life or your childrens' (sic) lives going through the Darién Gap or traversing hundreds of miles of desert if you have any other options. Walls only serve to push migrants into more remote areas, increasing their chances of death. It is a cruel policy."

She went on to accuse the U.S. of destabilizing the situation in South America.

Also on Thursday Biden offered a bizarre excuse for the decision that contradicted what his own Homeland Security secretary said about the subject.

"The border wall — the money was appropriated for the border wall. I tried to get to them to reappropriate it, to redirect that money. They didn't. They wouldn't," Biden said to reporters. "And in the meantime, there's nothing under the law other than they have to use the money for what it was appropriated. I can't stop that."

The Biden administration has been lambasted for an immigration crisis that continues to worsen under its policies. Biden had promised to end the construction on the border wall during his 2020 presidential campaign.

Ocasio-Cortez blames poor polling on a 'collapse' in support from young people and progressives who aren't 'being seen' by the administration

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) blamed low polling numbers for Democrats on a collapse in support from young people and others who helped elect President Joe Biden because they are no longer "being seen" by the administration.

Ocasio-Cortez made the comments in an interview with Errol Louis on Spectrum NY1 that aired on Thursday. Louis asked her if the Biden administration was open to trying new policies since their poll numbers are so low.

"I think the fact that the Biden administration has not been squarely shutting down a lot of these executive orders does convey an openness," she said, referring to executive orders leftover from the previous administration.

"But I do think that time for demonstration is running out, and we do not have much more time to wait because these falling poll numbers, I don't believe in governing by polling. But, if that is a concern, which, you know, to be real, an election, it's a real thing," she explained helpfully.

"We need to acknowledge that this isn’t just about middle of the road, increasingly narrow band of independent voters," Ocasio-Cortez continued. "But, this is really about the collapse of support among young people, among Democratic base, feeling like they worked overtime to get this president elected and they aren’t necessarily being seen."

"Wow," responded Louis.

Ocasio-Cortez also hammered Biden specifically for failing to follow through on his 2020 campaign promise to cancel student debt.

"It is Biden’s power and ability to cancel student debt, and nobody else’s," she said.

Although many progressives undoubtedly concur with Ocasio-Cortez, Fox News anchor Dana Perino noted that the socialist congresswoman failed to recognize a key contradiction in her political analysis.

"She fails to analyze her own position," explained Perino. "Which is that it's actually the far left that has put Biden in a position now, of basically going to lose a lot of seats in the midterms."

Ocasio-Cortez lashes out at Joe Biden for declaring that Israel has a right to protect itself from rocket attacks

President Joe Biden issued a statement declaring that Israel had a right to defend itself from rocket attacks and many on the left immediately recoiled in horror, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

Israel has been bombarded by dozens of rocket missile attacks for several days while violence from supporters of the Palestinian cause has erupted against Jews in several Israeli cities.

On Wednesday, Biden defended Israel after speaking via telephone with the nation's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Israel has the right to defend itself when you have thousands of rockets flying into your territory," Biden said to reporters.

"My hope is that we'll see this coming to a conclusion sooner than later," he added.

That support for Israel was reflected in the White House official readout of the call with Netanyahu which said that Biden reiterated his "unwavering support for Israel's security and for Israel's legitimate right to defend itself and its people, while protecting civilians."

Ocasio-Cortez immediately excoriated Biden for the statement.

"Blanket statements like these w/ little context or acknowledgement of what precipitated this cycle of violence - namely, the expulsions of Palestinians and attacks on Al Aqsa - dehumanize Palestinians & imply the US will look the other way at human rights violations. It's wrong," said Ocasio-Cortez in a tweet.

"By only stepping in to name Hamas' actions - which are condemnable - & refusing to acknowledge the rights of Palestinians, Biden reinforces the false idea that Palestinians instigated this cycle of violence," she added.

"This is not neutral language," she concluded. "It takes a side - the side of occupation."

Others on the left condemned Biden for voicing support for Israel.

"What a shameful, terrible statement," said columnist Wajahat Ali. "Biden could have condemned Hamas, attacks on civilians, and affirmed Israel's right to exist, and also condemned Israel for forced evictions, escalating tensions at Al Aqsa, Gaza strikes, the killing of Palestinian children, and, you know, continuing illegal settlements."

Ocasio-Cortez used similar language to berate New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang into acquiescing to her demands after he issued a tweet of support for Israel.

At last count, at least 65 people in the Gaza Strip had died from the latest conflict, while about 6 had died in Israel, according to Reuters.
